Dr. John McDougall - Health and Healing on a Starch-Based Diet

  • This episode originally aired July 7, 2022. We reshare it today as a tribute to his work and legacy.
    Dr. John McDougall was drawn to medicine because of his own health “fate.” At 18, he suffered a massive stroke and was an anomaly to the doctors in Michigan who wanted to explore “why” and “how” this could happen to someone so young.
    This health scare inspired his own journey to become a doctor, which eventually led McDougall and his wife, Mary, to Hawaii to practice medicine on a sugar plantation in Hawaii and service over 5,000 residents. What he saw there changed the course of his medical practice forever.
    The healthiest people on the island, the first-generation elders who had come from China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, were the healthiest and most vibrant people…still active, with no medications, and still in bodies fit for movement. It was their children and grandchildren, however, those second and third generations, that were struggling.
    Why? They had adopted a western diet of meat, dairy, and processed foods.
    The secret, Dr. McDougall discovered, was STARCH. Those healthy islanders subsisted on a diet comprised mostly of rice, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits and THAT inspired the work he does today through his McDougall programs and education.
    Beyond diet, the McDougalls are also dedicated to informing citizens about the positive effects of dietary therapy on chronic disease and our Planet. Animal agriculture, as we’re learning, is also one of the main culprits contributing to climate change and we discuss all of his “four deadly dietary deceptions” outlined at mcdougallfoundation.org (www.mcdougallfoundation.org/) .
    It’s an inspiring conversation from one of the legends and it was an honor to sit down with Dr. John McDougall.

    Thanks for honoring Dr Mcdougall. I was disappointed that not many were addressing his passing. He helped so many people and deserves the tribute. May he rest in peace and live on in our hearts. He did so much on earth. God must have decided his work here on earth is done and said come on home John. ❤ My condolences to his friends, family and our plant based community, we lost a good one.

    I had no idea Dr McDougall lived in Santa Rosa when the Tubbs fire happened. I also live in Santa Rosa and my family also lost their home in 2017. Today it's close to 100 and will be in the high 90s and low 100s for the next 6 days. I've lived here for 50 years and the temperatures continue to get warmer and warmer every year. This is a very heavy animal agriculture area. It saddens me every day to see that nothing has changed here since the fires. No real education as to how to prevent such catastrophes in the future. The majority of citizens here are pro animal agriculture even after experiencing horrific devastating fires and rising temps. Dr. McDougall said it, it feels hopeless because of human inertia. I'm grateful for the strong willed individuals like Dr. McDougall who never gave up. He was a gift and his legacy will continue on. Thank you Rip for replaying this conversation.🙏

    John had a great and rich life with a great family and friends, even if he as a young adult suffered some injuries. He was able to turn things around and prolonged his life a lot due to healthy foods. It’s not how many years you live, it’s the life quality and health during the years that you get that is the only thing that counts. Here John is a winner. Would you get dental work done by someone with no credentials, no experience and no license in anything related to dentistry? Dr. Bessie Delany age 104, the second African American woman licensed to practice dentistry in New York State would never approve of a starch based diet since she saw first hand for decades what consuming a fad diet would do to wreck your health and teeth.

    Like many, I am filled with sorrow over the premature passing of a giant, perhaps one of the initial 'foragers', to build this _fringe_ community of whole food plant-based folks who have adopted this dietary regimen - our natural human diet based upon our easily recognizable biology. Some know what Dr. John meant when he said: "The fat you eat is the fat you wear". However, of the 10 sayings mentioned here, Rip, that is not fully accurate. There are loads of good fats if eaten moderately such as nuts, seeds, *whole* coconut, and avocado. Blessings for what you, and your family, have done and keep doing.

    • @rabeascholz1390
      @rabeascholz1390 2 дня назад +1

      Dr. McDougall also said that most people can't do moderation, though, and was critical towards eating nuts. I vividly remember him saying there was a reason they came in a hard shell, and that the coconut had the hardest shell of them all.

    • @jageo48
      @jageo48 2 дня назад

      @@rabeascholz1390 True, John said that; however, in the saying, truth is not found. I shouldn't work white oak and lignum vitae as a woodworker, because they're so hard; I should stick to pine and spruce. HUH!? We're also told by others, that squirrels bury their nuts so as to ferment them. Yeah and some turn into trees. Good science is peer-reviewed, not anecdotal and not stated by experts, the lowest on the gold-standard rung. Didn't we all have 'nuff of that during the past 4 years?! No one person however well-intentioned, is the sole repository of truth. To follow anyone as hero, and I am not saying anything negative about John, as I have followed him for 15 years diligently, is to as Sadghuru states, "To concretize something you likely no little 'bout".

    McDougall liked to tell people good news about their bad habits that they didn't have to do too much exercise at all, just eat mostly potatoes, rice and corn, 3 foods that are not mentioned in KJV bible, so McDougall has a higher rank and status than the bible.

      He may have just died from old age in sleep. Some people don’t live as long due to variety of other factors no matter how clean you eat. How much one eats, how one eats(chewing,etc), how fresh the food is, I imagine all factors in the diet aspect

    The 10 "McDougallisms" make for a great fill-in-the-blanks puzzle:
    1. People love to hear good news about their [A] [B].
    2. The [C] you [D] is the [C] you [E].
    3. People think they are [F] when they are on a Western diet, but they are [G] to their [H].
    4 .The joy of living comes from surrounding ourselves with [I] that we [J] and living in a way that [K] our [L].
    5. If you don't take care of your [M], where are you going to [N]?
    6 .[O] is not something that you need to find; it is something that you already have if you just don't [P] it.
    7. The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of [Q], or the slowest form of [R].
    8. It's not the [S] in your [T], but the [T] in your [S] that counts.
    9. If you love [U], don't waste [V], for [V] is what [U] is made of.
    10. [W] the [X], [W] the [X], [W] the [X].

    He was wonderful...but why did he die so young? If we are never to know...his legacy is damaged.

      Why does that affect his legacy. What he did during his life did not change. He had a major stroke at 18 and lived longer then expected

    • @betzib8021
      @betzib8021 День назад

      @@lucythecat529 it affects his legacy because of the many people... who will now and in future... hear about his diet...people who could have been greatly helped by it...but who will now hear.." oh...that's the dude who killed himself early by eating that vegan diet"...and now...because of our not knowing really anything...not having ANY evidence to the contrary...no matter how many conjectures you posit...those people will be lost...his influence will gradually fade...until he becomes..to others...just another obscure diet crackpot. It is the last thing he would have wanted. If one sets himself up to be a leader in health...one has a responsibility to be transparent and state before death that if he or she dies unexpectedly...the effects of the proposed diet should be revealed... if there is evidence that the diet hurt...it should be made known...just as... if there is evidence that it helped...that should be told.. Pritikin autopsy showed clean arteries...he wanted people to know. That left a legacy. McDougall family should do as Pritikin's family did. Find out and let people know. McDougall would have wanted it.
