Then because of his inventions/company, he's given carte blanche to view top secret documents from the Air Force and chooses to look at death rates among war countries in WW2. Fascinating stuff that still holds true today. Oh and I should say this: Nathan was possibly the first person to be aware that autoimmune diseases relating to the gut were caused by fiber deficient diets. He said that "the tragedy is that they are prescribed to eat even less fiber" which is exactly right. Today we have more proof than ever that plant-based diets are the best at keeping patients in remission. The best studies we have now prove him right.

Everything Dr. McDougall says is available for free online. You don't have to go to see him personally. Rich people might want to, but I'm not in that group.
I read recently that having been diagnosed with heart disease, Nathan's autopsy showed a pristine heart. So in death did he prove his methods succeeded. Others have taken his work forward but Nathan's breakthrough was a milestone that will never be forgotten.
But his methods couldn't save him from cancer. He died a slow, horrible death from two different types of cancer in his 70s. Even junk food addicts who smoke often live longer than that.
He didn't suffer a slow painful death, he committed suicide. He did suffer from cancer, yes but one that usually isn't lifestyle or diet related and is also pretty common in children, unfortunately. It was just a poor luck of the draw.
Pritikin was among many who HBO comedian, Bill Maher, had lumped together with other health promoters this year in a comedy segment, saying that it doesn’t matter how much kale you eat, or standing desks you get... implying that being healthy won’t save us from a toxic environment - showing obituaries for people who died young like Pritikin. It was disingenuous to lump Pritikin in with the others, because an autopsy on him showed clear arteries, proving that his diet worked. He died from taking his own life. Even though Pritikin was not a medical doctor, he discovered truths that to this day doctors like Dr.McDougall and Dr. Greger mention as one of the pioneers in lifestyle medicine. He deserves a lot of respect.
Yes, it is short sighted. The man was a genius to look at infomation objectively -- everyone today has to be aligned with bias or opinion. There is no one of his calibre alive today in the Nutrition world.
You forgot to mention why he killed himself. It was because of the intense pain he had from two different types of cancer. His ultra low fat wrecked his immune system and allowed the cancers to flourish.
Pritiken's 67 at this interview, & had suffered from lymphoma & its treatment for 24yrs. All this considered, his appearance is a testament to his program.
I was impressed by this interview between Dr McDougall and Nathan Pritikin. Its clear that the message , that heart and most other diseases can be reversed , has been validated by the China Study and by the research studies circulated by such dietary luminaries as Dr Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr Michael Gregor

Now, in 2014, we have over 29,000,000 diabetics in the U. S. He mentioned that there were 11,000,000 at the time of the interview in 1982. Pills are easier than changing our diet. Change is hard, but it's really the only way.
He cured his heart disease and his leukemia was in remission for nearly 3 decades. When the leukemia came back he had chemo which damaged his liver and kidneys. He committed suicide because he had been given months to live and was in a lot of pain. I'd say his diet served him pretty well all things considered.
A powerful message shared by two of the greatest pioneers of lifestyle medicine in this country. Nathan Pritikin was a brilliant man and prolonged his life by looking outside of traditional Western medicine for a solution that he found through perfect observation and problem solving. This is also a testimony to Dr. McDougall's lifelong work in knowing how important it was to film this conversation. Thank you Dr. Mcdougall for all that do.
Pete Johnstone He developed terrible leukemia far before his diet program, and it did return after some 27 years of remission. But, he halted his heart disease with his nutrition program, and having not could have easily compounded his predisposing health problems. It is undeniable that his pioneering work has helped probably millions of people regain their health. He fostered the lifelong work of several doctors today such as Dr. McDougall that stand on his shoulders. He deserves the utmost respect, looking past his personal decisions.
Pete Johnstone Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States, has published a completely vegan, plant-based nutrition guide: mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org/ncal/Images/New%20Plant%20Based%20Booklet%201214_tcm28-781815.pdf
I attended the Pritikin longevity center in Santa Monica in the mid 80s. It was a five week program and my cholesterol went from just over 200 down to 158, the lowest it’s been in my adult life. I was thrilled and impressed. I loved going there and I loved the food. ❤
I remember the 80’s when the Pritikin diet was a craze people were healthier and fitter looking bodies on the beach. Today they have taken a step back in the wrong direction. Young kids with obesity, cancer and heart disease is on the rise. Thanks for sharing let’s hope people wake up.
What this man knew at the time I was 6 year old Southern American girl raised without this info, even with newer information and more studies this is absolutely amazing. Then by the time I am 50 today. I have already had heart disease and pre-diabetes. Nnw over a year with my why in hand, I have lost 70 lbs. and all my lipid panel risk for heart disease have moved from high to optimal and no diabetes due to moving to high fiber, plant foods, low saturated fat, no oil, and increased water for hydration.
My great grandfather died in the late eighties... I think 1987... he was 103... he spent most of his adult life eating similar to a raw vegan... but his normal diet growing up probably wasn’t all that much different... he lived just like pritikin describes... independent and full functioning high quality well into his 90’s... around age 98, he needed assisted living and basically died at 103 old age rather peacefully without suffering.
How did he know all that stuff 35 years ago? Very impressive. By collecting all the latest research we are slowly getting to the info he knew 35 years ago :).
It's even worse today because the a lot of research is funded by industry. In the end, only wholistic concepts matter because people have to stay on the program long term to get the benefits. That is why Nathan Pritikin was a genuis.
Came here after watching Dr. Michael Greger on the Rich Roll podcast - an absolutely exquisite interview and a step forward for whole food plant based diets!
What a remarkable man! I had heard of Nathan Pritikin when I was a young woman, but I never knew much about him. I wish now that I had known about his program years ago.

Incredible human being. Just as incredible is that, despite having all this valuable knowledge, the chronic diseases are more prevalent than ever. Thankfully a relatively few fortunate ones of us have this information and can change our own fates and try to help others.
Thank you Dr. McDougall for finding a studio to memorialize Nathan Pritikin's research. After reading The Starch Solution and The China Project, our family changed our lifestyle. After such amazing results, I am only now beginning to understand it was always about the food.
I think this video deserves perfect english subtitles, not just those automatically generated that have several errors. In this way, people around the world who don't understand English spoken perfectly will have a correct legend to help them. Thanks for sharing this legendary interview.

As I was watching this for the first time I wasn’t sure what he had to say & as he spoke I recognized his descriptions of things and figured out he must of been born in or near 1915 (my Grandparents age). How neat. He is absolutely a genius!! No wonder folks highly recommend “PRITIKIN” to folks… THANK YOU for this priceless treasure you share with peeps…
Thank you for this gem. It's so sad, we've known for so long what's the healthiest way of eating and yet almost no doctor today recommends a plant based diet to prevent disease.

@@RiDankulous His whole plant food diet gave him two types of cancer. The cancers got so bad they he ended up killing himself from the pain. I'd hardly call that a great diet.
It's hard to find someone as matter of fact as Dr. McDougall but listening to this interview for the 2nd time I think I've found someone. In so many of Dr. McDougall's lectures he gets straight to the point. And then expands upon and justifies that. I bet there have been many people attending his lectures that felt like fish out of water just having to sit there and hear it. And that's pretty amazing. Oh, the bad habits we the people carry close to our hearts! I bet there are so many people who would like to ask Dr. McDougall a question but just can't because they can't stand to hear the answer. They're sure as hell not going to go read any of his newsletters.
Dr. McDougall is so calm in this video! I guess the food, medical, and pharmaceutical industries hadn't ruffled his feathers too much yet. Wonderful video!!
It's because he (McDougall) had not been doing his brain damaging diet for very long at that point. Vitamin B12 and zinc deficiency etc. can make one irritable, edgy and confused.
Wolfgang Von Schaffenberg I have quite a bit of knowledge on the subject. Look into it yourself. There are many conditions known to be common with vegans and vegetarians due to nutritional deficiencies. McDougall also was tan and had good color back then. Now, he has kind of a gray skin tone. Does not look healthy.
Nice. I think we can see what your diet is doing to you and your attitude. Keep it up. Your brain will continue to atrophy (along with your attitude) and you'll likely be involved in a freak murder/suicide.
Pritikin was diagnosed as having leukemia in 1958. No doubt his diet helped keep it in remission for 26 years. The leukemia flared up and he was experiencing intense suffering. Consequently he ended his life his way. articles.latimes.com/1985-02-23/news/mn-1021_1_nathan-pritikin .

Your Grandfather was absolutely AMAZING!! I just came across his lectures this week - I wish I had heard and followed since the 80s!! But so GRATEFUL to know now!!! What a MAN!! ❤️❤️
Today I listened to the JAMA-podcast about Mr. Pritikin. They said that we do not need his diet anymore because we have medication, stents and bypass surgery. Yeah right. We all see how well that works.
If you read the biography "Pritikin - The man who healed America's heart", you will find it provides greater depth and perspective into the mind of Nathan Pritikin, how brilliant he was, and how convinced he was that his approach was correct, inspite of the antgonism he received from the medical profession, as well as all of the contributions he made as an engineer.
Wow!! That was fantastic. Years ago, in the mid 90s, I bought my mother one of his books as she was diagnosed with severe cardiovascular disease. She was able to follow the diet for some months and dropped her cholesterol from 300 to 140. But sadly she was unable to stick to the diet as her husband was against it and offered no support. She fell back to a bad diet, had a heart attack a year later, then a year after that had elective bypass surgery and died on the operating table of bleeding complications. So sad. She was only 69 years old. Nathan Pritikin was an absolute brilliant man. Thank you Dr. McDougal for this beautiful interview. ❤

Wow. Do you have the clip or date when he said this? I can't believe bill mahr . Ugh
So true
You forgot to mention why he killed himself. It was because of the intense pain he had from two different types of cancer. His ultra low fat wrecked his immune system and allowed the cancers to flourish.
@@lashedbutnotleashed1984well, no, he'd had the like for three decades
Pritiken's 67 at this interview, & had suffered from lymphoma & its treatment for 24yrs. All this considered, his appearance is a testament to his program.
It's remarkable. He received a cancer diagnosis in 1976. But had cancer since 1958 His diet kept him alive!!
@@TB1M1maybe, but he killed himself.
@robynhope219 yes, because he was suffering horrific side effects from the treatment.
I believe they can be controlled but reversed/cured? Not a chance.
WOW, THANK YOU ❣️THANK YOU SO MUCH ❣️
I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING DR. MCDOUGALL'S DIET AND AM THRILLED WITH ALL THE RESULTS I'M EXPERIENCING ❣️ I THANK YOU FOR EVERY VIDEO YOU'VE MADE, AND FOR YOUR BOOKS, SEVERAL OF WHICH I OWN. GOD BLESS YOU AS YOU ARE SUCH A HEALTH SAVIOR FOR US ALL ❣️ FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, I THANK YOU ❣️ I AM 57 YEARS OLD AND AM MAKING IT MY GOAL TO LIVE AS DR. MCDOUGALL'S DIRECTIONS HAVE TAUGHT US. I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER ❣️ SERIOUSLY, THANK YOU FOREVER ❣️
He also had lymphoma due to his no-fat diet.
@@lashedbutnotleashed1984that sounds like an unwarranted conclusion to me. Can you provide some evidence for your assertion?
@@lashedbutnotleashed1984 where can I get information on this? I would think all the very low fat advocate doctors would know about this.
@@EmpoweringCoach there is no info on that, it’s that person’s misguided opinion, just ask Dr. Greger about a low fat diet!
Exactly. Listen to Dr. McDougall assessment of Steve Job"s pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
Pritikin suffered from depression and committed suicide. He may not have had everything correct regarding diet-wise.
Pete Johnstone Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States, has published a completely vegan, plant-based nutrition guide:

OMG Look how handsome and young Dr McDougall is !💕🥰
I knew him in his 30s.
A classic gem -- grateful that you posted this conversation with a plant-based legend.
God Bless Nathan Pritikin! A real miracle for the world against all odds! So are you Dr McDougall💕
I think it's criminal what the meat & dairy industry has done to the American public!
The more I learn about healthy eating, the more of a genius Pritikin appears to have been.
yep
A health genius that died a horrible death before he could even make it to 80.
@@lashedbutnotleashed1984how, he killed himself!
Truly incredible interview. Can't believe it took me so long to check this one off the list.
Such a trip to see Dr. McDougalll when he was a baby.
That's how I remember him in Hawaii.
yes! He is so young here.
Fairly amazing how much he got right, outside of the system...
This is a gem. I enjoyed it a lot. Dr Pikirin looks so much younger than his age, that's impressive
Nathan was genious ,what a man ,lovely interview ,thanks!!Mcdougall is now best on Earth in nutrition ,he is leading in this field.
Ellen G. White spoke this message about diet 150 years ago ,you can read free her books online .
Nathanael Amare I know what EGW taught on diets as my doctor is an Seventh Day Adventist. he got me off my medications and I am now on a plant based lifestyle
Nathanael Amare can i find that books ?how
Incredible human being.
Nathan has such a kind voice and manner. I bought his book and followed it then. A true hero❤
I think this video deserves perfect english subtitles, not just those automatically generated that have several errors. In this way, people around the world who don't understand English spoken perfectly will have a correct legend to help them. Thanks for sharing this legendary interview.
I learnt about nathan after reading a book by Dr esselstyn and I am really impressed with his knowledge....all I note is that if you look for knowledge and u r ready to learn you will always get what you want!
It's so sad, we've known for so long what's the healthiest way of eating and yet almost no doctor today recommends a plant based diet to prevent disease.
amazing that this is 30 years old and still up to date
Thank you for sharing! I learned so much from this interview.
WOW!! This man was brilliant and it's such a shame that we don't have many more like him around these days...I wish I could afford to visit the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami for a few months, but he is definitely an inspiration!!
I can't believe how young Dr. Mcdougall is.Its like going back into a time machine.
Great interview! This man was ahead of his time.
Thank you for posting this video
29] And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for me
"....to you it shall be for meat"
A visionary interviewed a fellow visionary. Respect.
40 years later nothing has changed. beyond sad. this guy is the GOAT
It astounds and disappoints me that anyone can hear this information and still remain on the SAD.
What a marvelous piece of history you have given us, thank you,
Two heroes of health and compassion.
Dr. McDougall is so calm in this video! I guess the food, medical, and pharmaceutical industries hadn't ruffled his feathers too much yet. Wonderful video!!
It's called respect.
It's because he (McDougall) had not been doing his brain damaging diet for very long at that point. Vitamin B12 and zinc deficiency etc. can make one irritable, edgy and confused.
Pete Johnstone Do you have personal experience with this?
Wolfgang Von Schaffenberg
I have quite a bit of knowledge on the subject.
Simply amazing how a person without a medical background figured this out in those days. Deep respects! Wow!
Pritikin was diagnosed as having leukemia in 1958. No doubt his diet helped keep it in remission for 26 years. The leukemia flared up and he was experiencing intense suffering. Consequently he ended his life his way.

Thank you ,Dr. McDougall, for conducting and posting this interview.
What a beaifull interwiew - It should be shouted from the roofs. I wish I had known that long ago but I am gratefull for thiss sharing. Its so inspiring and so informative - thank you very much
He is over 60 in this interview - he does not look his age. AMAZING
Not everything is diet...good genes!
Two of the most intelligent men in the last 100 years. 💥❤️🙏👍
He had leukemia before he changed his diet. He had it in remission for 20 odd years which is pretty remarkable in itself
He got lymphoma while he was on a strict no-fat diet vegan. The diet wrecked his immune system and he killed himself from the pain of the cancers.
Your Grandfather was absolutely AMAZING!! I just came across his lectures this week - I wish I had heard and followed since the 80s!! But so GRATEFUL to know now!!! What a MAN!! ❤️❤️
I’m so impressed with his knowledge and security in his presentation
Amazing that he figured so much on his own in the fifties! Very illuminating discussion. Thank you so much for posting this video.
Wow! This man was brilliant! What a pioneer. So thankful for his curiosity and tenacity. ❤
At this point (1982) he is 66 years old. Unbelievable. He looks in his 40s!
And yet he would be dead in less than three years.
😢🙏
Such an incredible interview 🤗
Thank you Dr. McDougall, I first heard about Nathan through one of your videos! God Bless!
Thank you posting this video Dr. McDougall for free. I know you could charge for it but thank you for helping all of us Starch based students of yours save money to send our kids to college. We are in your debt . I always tell people to go to your website. Thanks again
This is GOLD!!!!
Thanks for this video Dr. McDougall
Wonderful video which emphasis that we need plant based eating to live healthy long productive lives. Dr MacDougall lead me to this video....I am Multiple Sclerosis survivor who uses diet to live better. However one does make mistakes so it's important to keep your eyes on the price. Health is the new wealth. Medication free 20yrs later. Keep on keeping on 🙏 God made us to be healthy for the years we have, but we have to make the decision to go against popular thought most times.
Wow it's just incredible that back then he knew that much . Amazing interview
Great interview, read his book in 1981.
Amazing! More recognition is due for great work that benefits humanity.
When i started this eating stail my fingers joints and knees pain healed in three days and feel so lighter and in one month i lose five kg wait with no calorie counting thanks to every one
“If I was to disappear from the earth today, the movement would grow... it’s too late to stop it... there’s no question about it...” This brought tears to my eyes. One of the most important interviews in the whole-food plant-based world...
Fascinating. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Such an interesting discussion! I can't believe his age - he looks so young.! Thank you for posting. He was such a pioneer in the health movement!
What a fascinating man. I so appreciate the posting.
Two amazing guys, their legacy will live on.
