Several months back, I refinished the lower half of a two piece unit. I'm FINALLY getting around to working on the upper half, which I'm turning into a free standing unit. I went for a not-so-typical finish, and added new legs, and although I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the legs with the finish on the rest of the piece, the more I look at it, the more I like it. What do YOU guys think? Paint the legs? Leave them as is?

SIDE NOTE- as mentioned in the video, I'm not loving the natural legs with this piece. But to be perfectly honest, I think what bothers me the most is the plastic wicker part. It was great on the lower part of this two piece unit because the whole thing was painted black and it just blended in. But here, it's a different colour and it just stands out too much. I feel like if that didn't exist, the stained elm, backboard and natural legs would all work. But that wicker part is like the straw that broke the camel's back. lol
My staging rug also isn't doing me any favours with this reveal, because it's very similar in texture and tone to the fake wicker. haha.
Sigh. Can't win 'em all. lol
Even though this isn't one of my favourites, I still wanted to share this because sometimes, this is how projects go. Things that seem like good ideas at the time don't always end up that way, and that's ok. They can either be modified or fixed, but there is almost always someone who loves it just the way it is and would want to purchase it.
Food for thought, and I encourage your opinions on what I've said here!
looks good to me, also what is the name of the song you play after you are done with a piece. I love the music
All my music I use comes from Epidemic Sound and/or Premium Beats. I do believe the reveal song was from the latter, though I don't know the name of it anymore! I've been using it and one other one for reveals since I started my channel :-)
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I love that song when you reveal the furniture. It is what makes your pieces pop. It wouldn't be the same without the one you usually use. I heard another one, one time, and I'm like, nooooo! lol
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery thank you
You are being to hard on yourself. You have great ideas and this piece turned out beautifully!
That was a great transformation. I would darken the legs even if you just make them the same color as the lighter tones in the cabinet base.
You never cease to amaze me! Not only have you taken one piece and turned it into two, you have vision for bringing new life to everything you refinish. A true artistic touch with infinite talent👏
Thank you, Angie and Nacho!!
How you manage to mix 3 different stains with 3 different ingredients without dripping a single drop on that counter is beyond me. Gorgeous work and friendly narration.
Lots and lots and lots of practise! 😊 Thank you so much for watching!
I actually like the light color legs. I think it brings that vintage feel to the piece. Amazing transformation great job as always.
I don’t know what I am surprised at this point, but literally every single one of your projects is just flat out amazing. Your ideas and creativity and quality of work are just incredible!
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate the positive words. Thank you so much for watching!
Nice job and I like the Eckhart Tolle book at the end.
Thank you :-)
Definitely not one of my favourites (elm aside… because I love that part) but someone will love it, haha. I think if the plastic parts weren’t there, it would flow better for me. :-)
I didn’t mind the legs but trust your eye for design Angie…you’ve got a gift! Loved the transformation and the vid ❤
Thanks love!
Lovely piece. The wood grain is like a work of art. I really love the green textured backing inside too.
Gorgeous! Does have a "cozy and warm" feel. I like the legs as they are
I think all the different colors and perceived textures is amazing... Just as she is.
I love when Nacho makes an appearance ❤🐈
I love what you did! The inside is a great surprise. Love the stain you chose. Keep it up.
Your product manager is adorable! My jewelry business (PhoenixFire Designs) has an Official Shop Assistant named Ginger (aka The FLÖÖF) who "helps" with all my product photography. She's a fluffy, orange cat and very dedicated to her work. 😄
Elm is a beautiful wood. It's a shame we lost most of our trees in the 1970's to Dutch Elm disease. Great finish.
Angie, this piece is gorgeous. It’s totally different grain is killer. I think you have a win and I didn’t think I’d like the legs either but after you showed the whole thing I think it really is gorgeous.
Thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad you like how it turned out! 😊
Looks great. Personally, I would stain the legs but the natural look is all right as well.
Yeah, I’m tempted even to try painting them. I’m just not feeling the natural wood there.
Stunning! I love the brightness of the legs against the somber tones and incredible pattern of the elm. You are a master of your craft 🤍🤍
Love the grain - your stain was spot on! I’ve been sick with bronchitis for two weeks and this video was more helpful than my medications at making me feel better - thank you.
I hope you're feeling better soon!
Nacho is gorgeous as are your other fur babies. I appreciate the quality of your workmanship.
I appreciate you kind comment. 😊 Thanks for watching!
We had a wood and laminate end table with that plastic faux wicker when I was a kid. I did not realize how absolutely weird that is until now.
I didn’t think I’d like the light legs, but they add to the softness and playfulness of the piece. Really pretty!
Thank you so much! 😊
Stunning Piece! I really love this. The addition of the blue on the backerboard really softens the overall piece. As for the legs. I love dramatic contrast and they do flow with the lightness of that blue. ♥
Thank you very much!
Your sweet orange kitty is so adorable. And I was laughing at all the censored bits when you dropped the back 😂 I think it turned out beautifully. Not every piece can be your favorite and there is nothing wrong with that. You still restored it very well 😊
Nacho is adorably busy! 😺 Thank you so much for watching!
All of your elm pieces are gorgeous, this one included! I think Elm is one of my favorite woods. I don’t know that I would dare give my opinion on the legs as you are an inspiration. I have learned so much from your videos and have probably watched them all more than once…
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave feedback on the piece. I really appreciate it!
I love the wood grain on this piece, but I would either stain or paint the legs. Love it.
Every time halfway through your videos I wonder what you could be thinking. Then the final reveal always blows me away.
You are so talented.
Thank you very much!
I also like the light legs. This is beautiful done!! As if anything you did would I be any less stellar !
For the legs, I think if they were a little darker they would match better with the rest of the piece, but they still look good. The wood grain on the top and sides gives a very trippy feel and the wallpaper backing was a great idea. The piece gives vintage vibes and I love it!! Side note: NACHO HAS GOTTEN SO BIG!!!!!
He's HUGE! He's only about 8 months old! He's gonna be a BIG cat. lol
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery seeing him REALLY makes me miss having a juice cat in my life. We have dogs cause the hubby's allergic to cats but I've known and loved a few orange tabbies in my life (housemate and friend's cats) and have always considered them the best of kitties.
At first I thought to keep it light, but after seeing the stain color, I really like it.
I think it looks great as it is. The light legs blend with the lighter grain of the timber. Love the blue paper background, very retro 👍
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Love it! I got a real vintage vibe from it. So much to take in, the pronounced wood grain, the textured backing, the faux wicker on the sides and the angled legs. It all worked for me and a special shout out to the little dinosaur.
Thank you very much for watching! 🙂
I absolutely love the wall paper on the back! And that wood grain is amazing! Beautiful transformation, as usual 👏
I love it! The paper backing inside really goes well w/the stain. I am now appreciating elm grain. Wild cuz of oak I get it. 🤪 I think I'd paint the legs. Beautiful Angie.
Husband watched it with me. He's impressed with the legs you made.
Turned out beautiful, love the top a lot, great color selection
Thanks so much 😊 I'm so glad you liked it!
Wow. That wood grain! It literally makes the piece, especially with how you brought it out with the black stain. Beautiful.
Thank you so much! 🙂
Paint or stain the legs and repaint the wicker a light color but no stain over it. Made the wicker look dirty with the stain. Your artistry is just amazing. You are my favorite furniture refinisher on RUclips. Thank you for taking the time to refinish beautiful pieces and save them. Also thank you for loving all the furry babies. Bunnies and Kitties 😻 🐇
Thank you so much for watching and for the suggestions! I'm so glad you enjoy my content! 😺🐰
Love the finished results. It may be fun to have the legs match the cane panels. ♥️💁🏻♀️
Question about adding legs: What determines if you need to add a fifth center leg? I’ve seen some really big pieces with four legs then smaller pieces with 5. Is it purely esthetic? Thanks.
It usually has to do with the span of the piece and the weight. Especially with the long mid century pieces, they tend to develop a sag in the middle over time and could really benefit from a fifth leg. Thanks so much for watching!
I SO love the grain -- glad you picked a stain that really shows it off!!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad you like it! 😊
Legs stained. The wood grain is so pretty. Love that piece!
Thank you so much for watching and for the suggestions! 😊
I’m often a fan of painted furniture but this wood grain is so beautiful omgggg. I wish you had done something to the legs to really tie everything together but as always you did a fantastic job overall
Next time! Thanks so much for watching!
I think it's a VAST improvement over how it started. I think I would have done the legs in Up in Smoke to create a more cohesive look. I really like the wallpaper backing, and am tempted to suggest painting the legs a turquoise to complement that.
Oooh that's a fun suggestion! :-)
I agree! I think it would really bring the whole piece together.
Ooo, yes I think turquoise may have been fun
Maybe even tint the plastic mesh with a turquoise glaze to get happy with the backing paper and jazzy turq legs. It could happen!
The contrasts work really well together. I'm especially digging the backsplash, that works really well!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like it! 😊
I love that you chose to use natural legs! Beautiful! Amazing black stain! 2 Thumbs up!
Thank you so much!
16:37 The woodgrain is absolutely amazing. The product you chose certainly brought out the brought out the best of the piece. I dont mind the natural legs at all. You would never know it was “just” a hutch you elevated it to a standalone piece. Awesome outcome as usual.
Yeah, it's kind of funny- I keep going back and forth about the legs. Sometimes I look at it and love it, and sometimes I think they totally clash, haha. I'll probably leave them for now but may change them up when I go to sell the piece.. not sure yet! I might even keep it for the office.
I would paint the legs, but it’s a wonderful piece in any case 😃 awesome job!
The grain is wonderful! You were right in the stain choice. What a great save!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you like the piece! 😊
Another vote for black or at least dark legs. You do such lovely work.
I like this piece but I think I would prefer the legs to be darker, to relate back to the elm and it's darker grain. Well done. Thanks
That's a really cute piece of furniture, and I love the way you lightened it up. The wallpaper looks fantastic! I'm not crazy about the plastic wicker. It looks much better than it did, I just wonder what real fabric would look like in those panels. And I agree that the legs might look better dark. But just as it is, I would be proud to have it featured in my home.
Brilliant transformation ❤
Wow! That turned out beautiful!!❤️😍🐇
Yeah, I love the piece except the legs clash for me. I love the idea of turquoise kegs! But smoke or black would be grand too. I think the light color is too “bright” against the ash grain.
I love what you did with this and the fabric was an excellent choice! I would have been tempted to pull off the plastic panels and replace them with the fabric, actually. And I'll vote to stain the legs, too.
That stain sure did make the grain stand out. Nice!
I've binged your whole channel and I want more!!!
I love Nacho's business card! This piece has turned out pretty awesome as all you other pieces!
Thank you so much!
That wood grain is amazing! I think you made a great color choice with the stain. Knowing that things can look a bit different in the video than what you’re seeing, I’m personally not crazy about the leg color. Could you lighten/whitewash them (take some of the yellow tone out) to blend with the plastic portion of the piece?
Thank you so much for watching and the suggestions! 😊
I definitely like the lighter color legs!!! It adds to character and gives it a unique feel. I feel if they were darker or matched the wood stain it wouldn’t pop or make a sexy statement like it does now. The carpet does blend too much with the piece lol. All your work is beautiful 😻
Thank you so much for watching and I'm glad you like it! 🙂
This piece looks great!
Nacho has gotten so big and I just noticed it look like he's polydactyl 🥰
Yep! On all four paws! But I love the mitts in the front soooo much
I love that wallpaper! Do you know the brand name for it? I'd def darken the legs, either full on black or to match the wood stain. For me, too dissonant when light. As always, beautiful, Angie.
The name of the wallpaper along with links for purchase are in the description for the video. Just click on the Show More... and a full list of products and items used during the video will pop up for you. Thanks so much for watching!
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I missed it the first time, but see it now, thanks!
Omg! The wallpaper in the back is brilliant! I love how it softened everything. It turned out great!
Thank you so much 🤗
Oh elm, you have my heart! The staining process is always the scariest for me. After all the sanding to get to raw, it makes me nervous to commit to a stain. I love Nachos new business card - very professional!
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
OMG Angie!!! I’m so glad you said before I did!! Meaning what really bothers me is the “wicker” then the legs 2nd. Thought I wasn’t going to Like the darker stain but I Love it!!! How much it brings out the pattern is Soooo Mesmerizing!!! Love the back paper too-a soft Turquoise/ Sky Blue cloth pattern!!! Loving Nacho!! He’s getting so big!! ❤️🎄💫😊
He's growing like crazy isn't he? He's going to be a big boy! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave the feedback. I really appreciate it! 😊
The elm grain is GORGEOUS with the black stain! I suggest giving the legs the same treatment as the plastic "fabric," ie, paint them and- wipe them with the black stain. As always, I enjoyed the Nacho cameo.
Thank you so much!
I like the legs natural. It is lovely and unique and the legs add to that uniqueness. Well done!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you like the piece. 😊
All together the wallpaper color, darker stain and lighter legs just work. The wicker has a beautiful look too. When the reveal first popped up, the wicker had this 1950s design with the high and low lights, almost like it was painted to have that exact design...not like it was already there and just painted...like you actually painted the lines of it yourself. I would go with it, it is living its best life!
Thank you so much for watching and for the feedback! 😊
I was having a tough morning, so I turned to TFG for solace, and my goodness, how right I was! My heart lifted, as you took off the thick old finish to reveal that wonderful Elmish grain beneath! I loved the final effect of the black stain, too! Thankyou, once again, "Professor Angie"; long may you reign!
Awe, thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad you like it! 😊
That is one awesome piece of art and the wallpaper was the perfect backdrop
Love the grain on that wood! The plastic "fabric" panels came out fantastic and the contrast to legs looks good also. But,. I think hairpin legs wood look phenomenal with this style cabinet! Again, another beautiful transformation.....SIDENOTE: I am not as crazy with the wallpaper backing...it may be the pattern or the color or both, but I think I would have preferred wood grain, or painted same color as side fabric panels.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching!
I like the light legs. Your instincts are 99% right. The wallpaper is very retro.
Awe, I really appreciate the support! Thanks so much for watching!
This turned out so beautifully! I think going darker and painting the legs black would really suit the piece.
I'm really loving what you decided to do with this hutch top. The color you made the wood sections, look almost like driftwood. Also with the pop of color on the back, it really ties all of the light and darker tones together beautifully. Fantabulous job, as always and a bonus, two pieces out of one😅😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
It looks really good Angie! Reminds me of a piece we had in my house as a child. Good memories!
Thank you so much!
Thanks to you, elm is my new favorite! Such a beautiful wood! Nacho is getting so big. My fur baby is a ginger tabby too, and quite a big guy.
Isn't he growing? Thanks so much for watching! 😺
I love all the projects you do! I love your new art work making your own dyes from natural elements from your yard. What about working to get reds and greens. Can’t wait
Thank you so much for watching!
Nacho has really grown! He has a beautiful swirl to his coat! Oh, the furniture was nice, too...
Yeah, but he steals the show entirely. haha he's one handsome little man. Well.. not little. He's going to be HUGE. He's only 8 months old!
I didn't think I was going to like this piece at all, but it's so cute, and unique natural legs and all. They give it a fresh look, and go well with the wicker inserts. Elm stained like this is now my favorite wood. I've never seen it like this before. Do more of it, please. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Bright red legs would have rocked this piece. Looks fantastic as it is also. Great stain color.
Oh that would be interesting wouldn't it? Thank you so much for watching and for the feedback! 🙂
This turned out great! Thanks for the leg advice to avoid tipping over! Nacho's business card is a hoot! 😁 You could use upholstery fabric and a very thin layer of batting and balsa wood to cover the plastic wicker if you wanted to.
Great tip! Thank you so much for watching! Nacho is very proud of his busines card, he's constantly flashing it to show off! 😺
Sooooo cool!! You always do such a beautiful job, and I think this piece looks amazing. I also got a kick out of Nacho's business card -- very clever!! 👍🤣😻
I love the wallpaper idea. Mr. Nacho is adorable. 😊
Thank you very much!
❤ Very unique! I really like the softness the backing, legs, & wicker gave it. Nice work!
Many thanks!
The grain is so beautiful the legs and painted part don't matter.
I love the candid cussing moment cause I do that all the time when I work on pieces and the soothing videos started to make me feel like I was a lil crazy 😂
😆😆Never fear, lots of cussing occurs here on occasion!
I really like each of the elements--the stained wood, the wallpaper, the legs, but not sure of the composition together. Was holding my breath for those glass doors through the whole process! Whew! I love how bold and confident you are in your work. I'm learning a lot and love following along.
Thanks so much for watching!
I love that wood grain,it's so beautiful.
Thanks for watching!
I do like the contrast between the legs.& the entire piece.
Love the wallpaper on the back - adds a real warmth to the whole piece! Another great transformation - well done!!
Thank you so much for watching!
I love pretty much all the things you do, but honestly I love this piece best of all. It definitely has that warm, soft feeling you were going for. I think the natural legs are great and I really like the painted wicker. I didn't think I would when I saw the piece at the start but the way you softened it with the dark stain on the white worked so beautifully. Also, the fabric on the backboard is the perfect addition.
Wow, thank you!
Nacho looks so much like my no-longer-here cat Levi. I get a little verklempt when I see him. From what I see, their personalities are similar. Always investigating or having to be where I am.
Wood, paint and glass - that’s about as mid-century as it gets! It looks better now than it ever did then.👍🏻
Thank you so much for watching!
I adore Nacho's business cards. I'd hire him.
😺 He's very thorough! Thanks for watching!
Oh my GOD, Angie! ❤🤩 This is cozy AF! I love the light colored legs, and with the blue paper on the back, this is giving me like cozy mid century Aspen ski lodge vibes. Love it!
Thank you so much!! 😊
Very, very nice, Angie! Watching you has made elm my favorite wood. I am amazed at how you are able to see past what a piece is and see what it could be. You are definitely my favorite furniture refinisher and I look forward every week to your new videos. Blessings and continued success to you and those you love in 2023!
Thank you so much for watching! Happy New Year to you and yours as well and all the best for the new year. I'm so glad you're enjoying my content! 😊
Your vision always surprises me in the best ways.
It surprises me too, but NOT always in a good way, haha.
This woodgrain is just soooo satisfying!
Isn't it?? Thank you so much for watching! 😊
First of all: your reveals are the best that I've ever seen! I love the build-up and flowing shots.
I like the plastic color and the legs. Here's why - the leg color allows the piece to "float", almost as if the piece is heavy (with the back panel textured look, the 'dated' plastic pieces that you were going for, and prominent elm grain) but the legs are "light" in weight; almost like the ropes hanging from a hot air balloon. The plastic pieces are slightly "aged" with the black stain that was rubbed away; it looks very authentic and NOT cheap and plasticy (new word? 🤣)
There's my .02 cents. I love it!
Wow! Thank you so much for the enthusiastic kind words! I'm so glad you love the piece. Thanks for watching! 😊
Absolutely stunning!! You did it again! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you! 😃
You made the choices that revealed that beautifully wild and crazy wood grain. This piece takes me back to a mid-century bar made from blonde oak that my uncle made for our home and it had those sliding glass doors. I noticed that the "wallpaper" you added to the back at a certain angle matches the edges of the glass - you know that coke bottle green, which I love btw. The legs in a lighter shade adds a pop and keeps this piece from becoming boring.
Most artists are perfectionists and are the severest critics of their own art. Let us know when this item sells!
I am on the constant watch for a new video from you and enjoy your videos on many levels!
Thank you!
Love Nachos business card! He’s too cute!
Isn't he? (And he knows it 😺). Thanks so much for watching!
