    Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it. Your description was spot-on, and I'm impressed with how you talked about the gameplay based on just the visuals and description, even referencing other similar games. As for why I released 001 Earth on Steam with minimal progress, my goal was to generate revenue to fund animators, sort of like a Kickstarter approach. Unfortunately, that plan didn't work out, and the stress of tackling a complex animation set me back on updates. Plus, my lack of experience and poor planning added to the struggles.

      I don't mean to be mean but with a full time job, a baby soon on the way or already here, you might want to rethink your game development plans. Work on just one game. Graphics not your thing? That's cool, maybe make more of a text-based game with minimal graphics you can do. There's no way you can work on like four games at the same time and make any real progress on any of them with some level of competency.
      Good luck though!

      I plan to continue with the Early Access ones for now, but hopefully we don't find too many more like this. There's only so many times you can watch the same song and dance, but there is always something funny about discovering how truly broken a game is

  • @everfluctuating
    @everfluctuating 8 месяцев назад +3

    i feel like a game - or rather, interactive game concept - like this shouldnt even be on steam, let alone for a price. early access is for games that are 80-90% done and just needs some finishing touches and bug catching. i wouldnt even call this 10% done; its the bare minimum of a program with no chance of actual development, considering everything going on in the dev's life.

    • @Graeldon
      @Graeldon  8 месяцев назад +1

      I'll happily take a lower done % if there's still something enjoyable/interesting, and it provides an opportunity to give constructive feedback and guide development. It's hard to be constructive here when the most constructive thing to say is: Make more of your game before you sell it.

  • @MizukiNoDoragon
    @MizukiNoDoragon 7 месяцев назад +2

    Early access is abused by so many devs to release unfinished games or avoid criticism with the defense of "it's early access, stop being too harsh, they'll improve it" that being lenient seems unfair to people who actually put in effort.
    There's so many "early access" games that end up abandoned or broken because any criticism is shut down or because people are lenient that it's frustrating. If you put a game on sale for actual money then people should be able to fully criticize the product.
    I understand making a game is difficult and takes time, but games like this that get abandoned with nothing to indicate that set a bad standard.

      I agree: if you think it's worth being sold for money, then it's fair game for criticism.
      Devs sometimes forget that what they make, how they make it, and how they sell it, has an impact on the wider gaming landscape. Sure, it might be small in the case of 001Earth, but when it occurs on a large scale it becomes death by 1000 cuts.
      You just have to look at the reuptation of RPGMaker games to see evidence of this

    As someone who's been working on a romhack for years now and advancing at a snail's pace, half because of real life getting in the way and half because of artist's block, i fully understand what it's like to feel like you're making no progress at all and that you just have to put something out there, as unfinished as it may be, just to feel like you're making any progress whatsoever. Putting out something this incomplete, though, is something you only do out of impatience, when you're tired or your project taking so long, and it gives you a false sense of fulfillment because you didn't actually create anything worth playing yet. I did the same thing for a while, releasing individual levels that almost no one cared to play, and once i did get out a full playable demo after 3-4 years, it felt incredible just because i can genuinely, truly say that i have created something that people have played and enjoyed, even if the full thing were to never get finished

    Long comment here, only because This developer reminds me a lot of me as a child.
    I got out project that's not complete on the store page only because I thought I could get it done and to get fans. I had more ideas than actual ways to impliment them. That works in fields like art, but not games. The dev's idea seems cool, but the developer had no strict timespan to complete one.
    All the warning signs are there from the interview: having multiple games rather than finishing one, being too preoccupied with a job and kids and not managing development time, and unproductive weekly updates (why not settle for monthly or bimonthly? There's hardly anything a solo dev can deliver in that time). I don't know how true the saying "those who can't do teach." But i certainly see this deveper better at teaching code to elementary school students than developing themselves.
    The dev seems nice and is at least honest buyers can get a refund, but I hope this dev will eventually set a regiment and timeline of game development. Some of the ideas they listed seem like silly quick game jam projects, and I hope to see/make one of them someday.

    I've always been mixed up on the idea to review "early acess" games, 'cause, you know... They aren't actually finished.
    That being said ; if the creator considers his game finished enough to be confortable with the idea of charging money for it, I might get confortable with the idea of tearing it apart.
    Anyway, day 34 of waiting for an actually finished game!

The Release Client Phase (basically the final phase to set things up to work as it's delivered by the client) and the concept-phase which is even BEFORE the Pre-Alpha (and is more to showcase the ideas in an interactive or at least visual format).

    To be fair, this doesn't feel like a scam.
    This looks more like someone with a Steam Dev account that just uploaded big ideas before they had anything fully cooked already.

      The Dev is kind of lying, somehow.

    • @Solinaru
      @Solinaru 8 месяцев назад

      @@-Shinoray- The thing is that there are scam games out on Steam, but you can tell something is completely off when you find them. As an example, there's a game called "I'm Looking for 3024 People" which basically unlocks the game when 3024 people pay for the software and complete impossible ARG segments. (impossible due to things like needing 300 people on a discord server entering codes one at a time with a timeout window that's shorter than a Bot API can poll the chat for updates.)
      If this game was on Itch or mobile for the same price, I would see it as someone's first game that is trying to ask for money to help work on it. Steam continues to have the "finished or nearly finished" games presigte that it honestly doesn't deserve anymore. Because of that, it looks like a scam when it's just someone biting off more than they can chew.

    • @TomaszRyszkowski
      @TomaszRyszkowski 8 месяцев назад

      You cannot just list features that actually aren't in the game in the game description, then want actual money for the game. I'm not sure if the dev has ill intentions, but the dev was indeed lying about game's features on the store segment that's entire purpose is to convince customers to buy the game. In that sense imo it is a scam for the buyer. Okay the dev is okay with refunds, but like that doesn't change anything because buyers could have gotten a refund from steam no matter what.

    The current stage of the game is described on its store page as "The current state of the game is still enhancing the world generation and character basic movements". Well, it feels like they should mention what they *don't* have, not what they are currently working on.
    I think there was no ill intent from the developer, though. Life gets in the way, and sometimes it is hard to accept the fact that you won't finish that project. I think, this is what is going on here

    • @Graeldon
      @Graeldon  8 месяцев назад +7

      I agree, I don't think anything was done with malicious or ill intent, it just ended up this way. But the dev should be more honest about the state of the game in the store, not in the game itself. Currently, it feels like a bait-and-switch

      @Graeldon  8 месяцев назад +2

    This really just seems like a case of overambition mixed with some poor business decisions. It's kind of a shame tbh, it's really not a great way to start your game dev stuff. I wish the best for the dev tho.

    I wish they would just remove EA games from Steam, Super Indie carts is a good example, it was released back at the start of EA, and 9 years later is not even half finished. Wasted money on a game that likely will never be done, and my Experience buying multiple EA games is the majority never get fully finshed, they stay in that half state like Indie karts or get rushed at the very end and still end up only partialy finished. Rare expections tho Like 30xx and 20xx which ended with very good Megaman clones, but they are the outliers. EA is supposed to be a functioning beta, eg a 66%+++++ done game but Steam lets them post proof of concept alphas and its not right.

    Very succinct review, I think you summed that one up as best as possible, hopefully the dev takes your advice.
    Something I kind of wanted to ask, you also write steam reviews for each game as well, and they are just as fun to read as well! Although I've noticed, I haven't seen any for .fall or .g. I understand that the steam reviews probably don't get as much traction as the videos, and for good reason, but I'm curious if you want to write any for those games, in case some poor soul stumbles upon those games, and isn't too sure.
    But either way, onto numbers, we are one step closer to 10,000,000! After it is completed though, my thoughts and prayers go out to you, so that you don't utterly lose your mind with the 50 different "1001 jigsaw puzzle" games. I am admittedly looking forward to it though, since a longform video where you cover a bunch of games would be cool!

    maybe they don't have bad intentions, but it is their fault for continuing to have the game up on steam for actual money and essentially scamming people out of their money. when they realized they can't make much current progress on it they should have taken it down or made it free. yes, directly in game it says if u did not expect this level of progress u can refund. but if the buyer doesn't refund bc they have hope in the project and miss the refund window? thats just not fair to them and leaving it up for a cost will allow more ppl to throw their money into the void

  • @GwyndolinOwO

    in game development I'd say something like this falls into prototyping. Prototyping is the stage where you are programming code but you're just figuring out the bare basics of if an idea would work or not, and the fundamentals of what you want to add to later. For example, if you wanted to prototype a racing game, you might make a very simple track and a car that moves. Prototypes don't need to be extremely simple but they usually lack tons of features that would make a game actually playable and fun.
    I feel like whoever made this INTENDED to do more but yeah, it seems like they made a prototype, and jumped ahead and put it on steam, which isn't great. LOTS of games never made it out of prototype or a game can change so much from prototype to even alpha, so publishing it that early is weird to me, you're basically asking people that play your game to be bored or disappointed.

    • @Graeldon
      @Graeldon  8 месяцев назад

      This feels like it's pre-prototype, as I'd expect the prototype to at least have functioning interactions and maybe some basic combat. But it's probably the closest description for whatever this is.
