As a bassist, what everyone calls slap bass is actually slap & pop. You slap with your thumb then pop another higher string with your finger as you come back up, that's what's you're hearing, the pop sound. Watching Misa switch between pic, slap, and finger style is something that is truly unique about her, not very many bassists at all can do that as seamlessly as she does and because she has to hold the pick while slapping she actually uses different fingers than a normal technique. I've played bass for over 20 years and when I saw Misa I quietly thought about putting my bass in the back of a deep closet. Instead I bought a drum set and said "these women inspire me to play and actually now learn a new instrument!"

The thing is, there are 3 guitar parts in this song, lead 1, lead 2, and rhythm. The high, soaring part that you said was Miku was actually Kanami on a backing track. You can still hear Miku's low crunch during it, as well as MISA's bassline. Kanami does that sometimes when she writes the songs, and usually she's able to play the two lead parts live because there isn't a lot of crossover...this is the song with the most crossover.

I've heard this multiple times from first time reactors to Band-Maid, especially when it's "Onset".
"Onset" is an epiphany. One of those moments when you realize you're witnessing something far beyond your expectations. I had watched a few Band-Maid videos prior to "Onset" and enjoyed them, but "Onset" stretched "The Gap" farther than I expected. It's an instrumental as memorable as any from RUSH, It's what convinced me that Band-Maid should be ranked among the greats, should eventually be Hall of Fame inductees. I did not think they could surpass "Onset" until I heard "From Now On" and now I know that this band does not have limits.

Princess Nittpicc, I love your and Ryan's insight into Band-Maid music. I'm NOT a musician. The only way I could make money in music is if the band paid me money to keep my hands off their equipment. If I tried to sing, I would get a rap handle "Tone Def". This band is SO much fun to see and listen to. In this song, Kanami seems to be shredding the entire time except for Misa's, Akane's and Miku's solos. Ryan Mear is right, Kanami's compositional style is so genius. I call her the "Wonderful Little Genius". I love it when macho guys (including old geezers like me) listen to Band-Maid's for the first time. When the four individual members (especially MISA) do their solos, their jaws drop. That happens so many times when I look at first time reactions to the band on RUclips. Band-Maid concerts will become a bucket list item and then, a must-see-again thing to do. I've seen them twice and plan to see more of their concerts like so many of their fans.

Excellent analysis of Onset NittPicc. Band Maid began releasing instrumentals very early on, in fact since they began writing their own music. In 2017, the b-side of the YOLO single already came with an instrumental YOLO. In all their live performances they usually incorporate one or two instrumentals, I understand that to protect Saiki's wonderful voice. BTW: Do you marvel at syncopated and extravagant rhythms? What Misa is doing in that section is Slapping (Slap hitting the string with the boney part of your thumb usually close to where the neck starts, so it bounces on the fretboard giving a more percusive sound) and Popping would be doing the same in the opposite direction, plucking one of the higher strings with one of your other fingers away, so it bounces and hits back givin again that percusive quality to the note. So its Slap and pop, more commonly refered to Slap or slapping alltogether. During her solo u can see the transition between her using her pick, and then holding it between her palm and finger when she goes into the Slap part.
Some popular bands that use a lot of slap would be Red hot chili peppers or Rage agaisnt the machine for example. But i would recommend listening to Marcus miller, Larry Graham or Victor Wooten, among others, masters of this technique.

There are two more instrumentals from Band Maid, "Without Holding Back" and "Don't Be Long" the first is relatively easy to find, the second is a little harder to find. I'm almost sure at some point our favorite Maids will write more instrumentals in the future. Please take very good care of yourself and have an amazing week.

This is the first Band Maid song I ever heard. It was a reaction by Tank The Tech and he just went bonkers over Onset and had tears in his eyes. Subsequently, I've listened to it mover 100 times with headphones, ear buds and my jacked up sound bar to really get the feel of the composition, which by the way is just gorgeous. I have always been a big fan of instrumentals because when I started following rock in the late 1950's every rock band started their shows with an instrumental and sometimes when restarting a set. I was a huge fan of Don Wilson and The Ventures, who basically created instrumental bands around 1959-1960 or so. Walk, Don't Run is as fresh today as it was back then. Other great groups were The Rip Chords, The Surfaris, The Tornados and from England, The Shadows. A fun fact is that The Ventures were huge in Japan when they first went over in 1961 and there are still Ventures Tribute bands in Japan today. In the three times I've seen Band Maid, they have done both Onset and from Now On, and seeing them play them live is just so satisfying. The solos are awesome and watching Kanami play that classic Southern rock riff in her solo, I could picture her up on stage with Gary Rossington and Lynyrd Skynyrd. And I'm glad you brought up Miku's great contributions because for someone who had never played guitar before she has become extremely competent. And what else can you say about Akane...........she is just otherworldly with her perfect fills and just great drum work. I play percussion, but more in the Latin mambo style with the Timbales and Congas as opposed to a full kit. I just couldn't deal with it.
As respects Misa and her bass, if you want to see more of that style, check out Juna Serita, a legendary Japanese jazz bassist, her slap, pop and strumming are flawless. She was part of Tokyo Groove Jyoshi for a long time and to get a good idea check out TGJ covering "Funk #1" and Tower of Power's classic "What Is Hip". You won't regret it. She also has quite a few practice sessions on her channel which are very informative.
If you are interested in the early days of female rock groups you should check out Fanny, which is the first female rock band I can remember when they hit the scene in 1970. They really are the progenitors for the modern female rock band. There is a channel dedicated to them at Fanny-Rock and Roll Survivors on YT. I think that they are just up your alley. The channel just put up a three-song set from Don Kirshner's Rock show from 1974 and they are just fire.

You mentioned looking at your hands and I thought of something on social media a few years ago ... the band has "band camp" before going on tour; they get together for intense rehearsals. During one of the "blow off steam" moments they tried to play "Screaming" while blindfolded. The original youtube videos have been taken private but there's a reaction video from Old Mr. B (watch?v=XvU8u10BmPw). He doesn't talk over it. It's hardrock, prog-rock, whatever you want to call it, but it's absolutely rock. Of course, we can't forget Saiki's incomparable voice and her vocal harmonies with Miku but the instrumentals are necessary to show their skill level. Hi NittPicc, I am a bassist, but studied mostly the double bass viol classically. (I have not played music professionally in decades.) The electric bass guitar is not my fuerte, but I did have a few chances to learn about it while studying Jazz in high school, before our school's electric bass was sadly stolen. The bass sound you asked about is, indeed, the string vibrating against the fingerboard. The technique is to pluck or slap the string perpendicular or at a sharp angle to the fingerboard, instead of across it so that it will make contact with the finger board in the manner consistent with the sound you want to produce. The electric bass' pickups can be sensitive to this sound, at least with the settings I used in my limited experience, producing a jolt when accidentally done. The geometry of the electric bass' fingerboard is flat compared to the extreme asymmetrical arc of the double bass viol, owing to the bowing technique accommodated to hit one or two strings at a time instead of all four. So when picking up the electric bass with no instruction, my fingers were instinctively plucking tangential to the arc I was accustomed to having instead of the flat plane, producing that undesired distortion until I retrained my fingers to produce or not produce the desired effect. Ha!

They actually do change time signatures to 5/4 for like 4 bars. But transition is a bit camouflaged due to the syncopation. What is also cool about this song is the structure. It still has a conventional song structure with intro/verse/pre-chorus/chorus/solo/etc. The only difference is that Kanami carries the melody vs Saiki. It just isn't apparent the first time you hear it.

Yeah, I came down here to say the same thing. I had for a long time assumed that that secondary melody was played by Miku, and was mightily impressed by her progress from carrying a prop to actually playing the guitar at all. I started having doubts when I noticed that she had an entirely different tone when playing her solo, and then someone with better ears (or better *trained* ears) than mine pointed out that it was most likely a backing track, played by Kanami.

Such a good track. Love your analysis!
I too am a massive fan of complex rhythmic stuff and weird time signatures, but it's notable that for all their wild technical proficiency and prog sensibilities, BAND-MAID almost never deviate away from 4/4 (the brief 5/4 parts of this song being a rare exception). There's tons of unbelievable syncopation and intricacy throughout their work, but they stick with the four count, for reasons of immediacy. And it's really effective. But I'd love to hear them throw in some really wild math-rock elements and polyrhythms.

Ok so 2 fun facts : the groovy part where you liked the rhythm guitar, kanami is using a delay pedal, so we're hearing 3 times the notes she's playing, but in a disjointed way, which gives it that cool effect. You can tell the difference immediately in the studio version, where there is no delay, and it sounds rather empty. And the part where you said Miku was adding a melody on top of Kanami's tapping, is actually a backing track! If you look at Miku's hand, she's just holding down a power chord, the sound would've felt a bit empty otherwise, and also i've never seen Miku do octaves, that's always Kanami's thing. Also, if you like this kind of instrumental, there's actually an instrumental by Dream Theater that's strangely resemblant to Onset! Particularly the main riff, it's pretty close to this one. Of course the rest of the song is turned up to 11, because Dream Theater, but i'd suggest giving it a listen, it's called "Stream of Consciousness" as i know the other maidiacs are already giving many BAND-MAID suggestions.
