Hearing problems in children are much more common than you might think. Around 80% of children will experience 'Glue Ear' by the time they start school. For some, this can have lasting effects if it goes untreated. Find out more about Glue Ear and hearing loss using the links below:

Question if the child hears a tv show and react to it but when they call him by his name he doesn’t react.

I would go to the ent I have two kids with hearing issues one with a rare condition that causes excess wax, now my daughter however does not 3 1/2 and is autistic on the spectrum but we found she has had wax build up an it’s impaired her hearing an the doctor finally said it fluctuates sometimes it maybe worse then better an then worse but you won’t know if they don’t tell you it’s hurts, or if they can’t say I can’t hear you or I hear it muffled etc. So I was surprised because she heads the tv seems to hear me walking turns out she couldn’t she heard the vibration an at a certain decibel level, as well as the left ear was completely blocked 10% hearing 😭 the left was 50% so depending on her angle she may hear better on that side etc.. I was absolutely flabbergasted because I was told several times her ears seemed fine, and finally a pediatrician really took time to look an look good, and now she’s talking more it’s amazing, before she couldn’t understand everything, an it probably was going on for over a year to two as ear infections can resolve on their own especially mild.. I was shocked but because of my sons issues with his hearing and needing hearing aids and things I knew something was wrong I just new it wasn’t all autistic symptoms I could tell something was happening, and finally our new pediatrician really looked well an he got us to the ent right away. Not saying this is your issue at all, but I think there is no harm going to the ent and getting glue ear checked she has that an now it’s resolved and will have tubes put in next week.

Thank you for this video it's given me a little relief to try not to worry so much right now. My daughter is 2.5 and has a speech delay and has been in speech therapy for 10 weeks with not a whole lot of progress. She said mama and dada around 6 months and said about 8 words by the time she was 1. She has had 2 ear infections right between 10-16 months but they cleared and her ears haven't had fluid issues afterwards everytime she's been checked. She has been right on target with all other milestones before speech, and does say some words but many of them sounds the same. Like mom, mad, mine she pronounces them all similar. She typically will bring me what she wants and put it in my hand and get my attention other ways than speech. She has been seen by an audiologist twice for base line testing and both times she hasn't responded at all below 45 decibals, she would turn her head to the louder and higher pitches right away. Not sure if she wasn't interested any longer or if she's not hearing she was a bit squirmy on my lap both times while we were in the sound room testing. Audiologist recommended further testing so we're in process of getting referred to a specialist where they will have to sedate her and will be able to determine if she has clear hearing or if there is a hearing loss. The issue that concerns me is it will probably take a few months to get into the initial appointment, then scheduled out from there for the testing. The speech therapist recommended having an autism screening done after the 3rd session because she wasn't really engaging with her, didnt seem to want to make eye contact, tip toeing and dancing/flapping,and gets frustrated when prompting. Now that she's warmed up to her she will sit on her lap on the floor while playing during sessions, makes eye contact with her a lot more and watches her mouth a lot when she's talking. She has been getting really upset when it's time to leave now so I've started bringing snacks to try to help with leaving with a bit more ease 😅 The speech just isn't coming along very well yet. She is very vocal though! She nods yes and no most of the time, hums, babbles new sounds, sometimes tries to imitate the words and will study my mouth when talking and now her mouth in the mirror and make sounds and faces. Just yesterday, she started making fishy lips and can make the "kiss" sound which is new and Sooo cute. She is very affectionate and gives hugs and kisses frequently and is so smart! I'm hoping we can get to the bottom of what the reason is behind her speech delay because ultimately, we just want to give her the right tools to thrive, whatever they may be!
