These also apply to kindergarten (USA age 5) also.

My 4 year old starts reception this September and I have to say that we are both very anxious about it. I'm not new to it, my other child is now in high school, but the issue lies with his ability levels and fear of him not getting the support he is likely to still need come September. Charlie is developmentally delayed (not by too much, he is catching up slowly but it's definitely noticeable when you seem him around other children his age) and there are some things you mentioned that he still has difficulty with.
Tip 1. Toileting. Charlie started his potty training journey when he turned 3 and finally voided in the potty a full year later. Yep, it took him a full 12 months, a ton of accidents, intense anxiety (on his part) and a whole heap of baby steps along the way. He can now void in the toilet independently, flush it (providing the mechanism isn't too stiff or difficult) and wash his hands. However we are still working on wiping. He is struggling so much with this and despite his best efforts he can't clean himself properly. I hope that by September he will have finally figured this out, but if he hasn't then he is going to need support. I think there is an issue with parents not bothering with toilet training their children properly these days, but I assure you that some of us really do try and have worked damn hard at it but some kids just need more support than others. I am so anxious about him being left to sit in dirty underwear because of a lack of support with something he hasn't fully mastered yet.
Tip 2. Feeding. We have other issues at play here for us, in that Charlie struggles with his hands or clothes being dirty or his clothes feeling wet. He can self feed with a spoon or a fork, but the minute he spills any on himself he will put down his cutlery, push his plate away and refuse to eat until his clothing is changed and his hands are cleaned. I have no clue why it bothers him so much, maybe it's a sensory thing, but it has definitely placed a hurdle in the way of teaching him to feed himself. Since a lack of lunch staff is clearly likely to be an issue with aiding him at lunchtime I think we will have to forego school dinners in favour of a packed lunch with finger foods and carry on working on this one at home.
    6. Read his own name. We have worked on this for the last two years and are genuinely getting nowhere. He knows how to say his name and will respond to someone saying his name, but when it comes to recognising it in a written format...well it's just not sinking in. The only letter he recognises is C but I know for a fact that in his reception class there are several other children whose names begin with C so we still have work to do. Any suggestions on how to teach him this would be greatly appreciated.
Tip 7. Numbers. We are working on this one too, but it's really slow going. We have number puzzles and books and do a bit of number work every day but he still gets confused as to what order numbers go in (he tends to say 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 11) but if you prompt him at 4 he can then continue correctly up to 10. It's rather odd. He recognises some of the numbers by sight but not others (he correctly recognises 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8).
Tip 8. Sharing. Charlie still has work to do with this but essentially it boils down to the decided 'value' of the object in question. He is obsessed with vehicles and takes a lot of persuading to share these, but other toys he is more than happy to share. We work on taking turns by playing matching pairs, picture bingo and snap but it's definitely a work in progress kinda thing.
Apologies for the essay. I was judged online this morning regarding Charlie not being fully 'school ready' and it really got to me because we are genuinely trying but I just don't think it will all fall into place for him in time.

Mama Kat....Read your comment and I can completely relate to it as my son took long for toilet training, eating by himself and expressing his needs...as a parent I tried my best to make him make independent but it was too difficult. If he was unable to do something in first go, he would get irritated and wouldn’t try again. He is six now and still needs some help with daily chores, which actually affects his self-confidence. Hope your child has progressed well. Good Luck

I completely understand you.. my son has just turned 5 this aug but we still couldn’t get him to year one due to his speech delay. Since he is the only child and because of the unfortunate Covid situation and lack of social interaction he doesn’t have any friends but us . So we have to start him from Reception instead of year 1 as many schools feel that he isn’t ready for year 1 as yet😒

Though I agree you should develop these skills, some children have just turnrt 4 where these are not skills they are developmentally prepared for or expected to be at.

I found this really helpful. My little angel will begin school by September. I already did good potty training but I now know I should let her feed herself and train her to identify her name. Thank you.

So if a 4 year old needs the toilet, do they go alone? Like walk themselves to the toilet? I didn’t go to school in the uk. I did in Portugal and we had helpers not teaching assistants, staff whose job was to assist the kids in all areas - toilets, breaks, lunch time, queuing up for home time, emotional support, first aid. That makes sense to me. Very anxious about the expectations for small kids to be so independent here in the uk. We also start primary school at age 6 in Portugal not 4 so that’s even scarier 😢

I have a question. According to a colleague of mine, it is the TA's job to help the children go to the toilet, and from where I work they ask parents to bring spare clothes that the children can use. Is it necessary that at the start of the school year, the parents get to be informed that it is their responsibility to toilet train the children?

My son started yesterday for kindergarten and the teacher has already lightly complained to me about my sons behavior. She said "he is extremely smart and extremely full of it!" He has high energy compared to the rest of the classroom. He does know how to do these things. Do you have any other videos on how to teach calming and adjustment for the classroom?

“If parents run too much interference in problem solving for their children while the children sit back and do nothing, the parents will get stronger, but the children get weaker and fall over when they try to run on their own.”

I found the video quite useful, but #10 was completely unnecessary. I understand the need for self-promotion, but perhaps "like and subscribe" could've been said after a legitimate #10 was implemented. I wrote most of these down as preparation for my kindergarten class to be aware of, but they surely don't need to know "watch my videos," haha. I mean this as constructively as possible, of course. Great tips, thanks for the help!
