Teaching Vocabulary to Young Learners Through Brain-Based Teaching Strategies by Setenay Çelik

  • Having started with the point that children learn easily and forget quickly, I have been working a lot on how to teach vocabulary to young learners by improving their memory skills. If it comes to memory, it is well worth searching about the brain. Throughout my search, I have found out that as long as the teachers meet the needs of the young brains, it is easier for the learners to remember new vocabulary items. In this presentation I’m planning to share my findings and ten practical brain- based activities that I use in my classes and find really effective.
Setenay is from Turkey and she has been teaching English for 8 years including 4 years of teaching when she was a university student. She holds a Masters Degree in English Language Teaching from Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey. Her particular areas of interest are teaching English to young learners and creating new, useful classroom materials and activities.

thanks for all of your comments ☺👍 yes, I'm a non native English speaker just like all the other non-natives who comprise more than half of the world population. I try hard to teach English to the students who may work with any people from different countries in the future. I guess understanding and being understood will have more importance than the American, English or Canadian pronunciation, then.
I am planing to make new educational videos ☺

Hi. i graduated a few months ago with Bachelor of Education in teaching english as second language. with that degree, i am supposed to be teaching teenagers but, where i'm working right now, i have to teach young learners as well. kids as young as 3 years old. so your video helps a lot. i'm also a non-native speaker and i understand what you feel. regarding the comments about non-native just play games in class, ignore that person. i find it very useful to use games to help students master the use of the language. kudos from malaysia!

Well actually this is a kind of teaching methodology that has been widely applied in memory training courses. But this is the first time I have seen it used in vocabulary teaching combined with flash cards. Very inspiring for all teachers!

Just to let you know, I am still learning English, all my life I was avoiding to learn it because the boring teachers I had. I started to learn English thanked to my Spanish and Polish teachers. They were fantastic like you and made me wish to learn English. I need the language to communicate with others. I will never speak like a native and I don’t mind!! Keep it up!!! Congratulations on your presentation!!! I teach Russian and Spanish, but I can transfer your approach to my lessons. Just to let you know, I am still learning English: all my life I have avoided learning it because the teachers I had were boring.*(1)* Thanks to my Spanish and Polish teachers, I started to learn English. They were fantastic like you and made me want to learn English. I need the language to communicate with others. I'll never speak like a native and I don’t mind that!! Keep it up!!! Good teachers empower other teachers!! *(1) Present Perfect as this is an action in the past, namely "avoided learning" with an implication for the present; that you had boring teachers in the past did not inspire you to learn English and therefore need to use your time now to learn English.* Well, I hope that you're using English daily and that you are quite comfortable with the language!

This is sweet. But as a former esl teacher, I do feel stupid half of the time because I know I didn’t learn thru being silly. I learned thru digging deep in my curiosity of stuff. I was so into space as a kid, then I was into music and celebrities as a teenager, and now I’m into sci fi as an adult. I learn thru these things because resources in my language were minimal. So I read English book and watched documentaries.
Now I am a teacher at a Montessori school and I teach extra class to one kid...the class is to help her improve her English but learning the language technically isn’t our focus. I teach her about snakes and tornadoes bc those are what interests her now. We expand her vocabulary by learning parts of the snake, species of snakes, how tornadoes form, etc. She’s loving it and it’s so easy for me to prepare our daily lessons because I am guiding a child thru her curiosity. We cook on the side too! We also play outside, and we talk about our daily life.

Great presentation! I have learned a lot of things that I am going to apply in my classroom. I want to tell people who gave you bad reviews, that you're brave and more intelligent than people who speak only one language and it's impossible for them to learn another language. If some of them are teachers and they don't respect diversity, they are losers and they will never be successful in any career. Racism, unfairness, and inequality still exist because of these people.

Honestly I didn't like the dance you did at the beginning but the idea that you are trying to do is just great. Actually the most important thing that you emphasize is the action during the class and I pay attention to do in my classes as well, Bec only grammer teaching is terribly boring. So I engage my students only when I make them play games. and it is very affective way for learning. Thanks the video!

So sad... I was taught to teach like you, but in Costa Rica, if we teach for the Public Ministry of Education we are almost "executed" by the very lazy students we frequently have in specific types of High Schools.
Right now I am dealing with big problems just because students elder than 18 y.o. do as negative things as writing down letters asking for me to be fired just because I ask them to respect me, respect their classmates, and stop disturbing the class. They say I make them feel "humiliated and attacked"
I know the problem is them, and not me. The problem for now is that in a few days I will have to prove that they are lying.
These situations are the ones, nobody told us when we studied for many years to even get a higher degree than just the Bachelor...
    Does it happen to others?!
    :(

The problem is with new generation. As the time is passing the students are getting worst not in terms of learning only but in showing respect too.

This is why I'm horrified by the idea of being a teacher my mother's dream was for me to become a teacher like her. But me being a student and analyzing the students I used to go to school with I knew very well that it's a big no no and I'm glad I didn't follow her lead. I hope everything will go well with you and you will prove your innocence good luck with the hardest work in the world respect 🙌🏻💗

I very bad experience. Why don't you come to Ethiopia ? In Ethiopia, students in particular, and the people in general are very respectful.

Thank you very much for your video. That's exactly how I remember pictures. I put them in to some kind of story. It works every time. The same goes for knowing how to get from place to place.
