  • It was the year 1561. The Portuguese Viceroy of Goa Constantino De Braganca handed over the tooth of Buddha to the Archbishop of Goa. The King of Pegu, now called Myanmar, had offered him 50,000 pounds sterling as a ransom to save the tooth from destruction. But the Archbishop of Goa placed the tooth in a mortar and crushed it to powder. The powder of the relic tooth was then burnt in charcoal and after that, the burnt powder along with the charcoal used in burning it was thrown into the river Gomti. This was the account given by Portuguese historian Diogo de Couto.
The story of the tooth relic starts around 2500 years ago when the body of Buddha was getting cremated after his Parinirvana in Kushinagar in the Gangetic plains of India. Khema, a Bhikkhuni and one of the two Prime female disciples of Buddha grabbed the left upper canine tooth from the ashes.
Dathavamsa or “Chronicles of Tooth” written in 310 AD in Sri Lanka gives a detailed account of the long journey of the tooth after the cremation of Buddha.

Instead of Gauthama Buddha, he can also be reverentially addressed as Bodhisattva ( one who had attained perfect knowledge) always smiling like a lotus (it is known as padma pani in sanskrit if I am right. If you visit the Ajantha caves you can see the beautiful ancient painting of Bodhisattva located in Western India

As sinhalese we protected the holy tooth contineously..yes in the portugese period they wanted to destroy it..because not only of the religion but also the politics.Because sinhala people believe in anyone who has the holy tooth as their king. After portugese concured kotte sinhala kingdom, holy tooth transfered to delgamu temple. And we made a replica from an elephant tusk. And that replica was given to widiya bandara. He was a great warrior who fought against portugese. Even he believed he has the original relic. He went Jaffna to join tamils and to attack portugese. His army was consisting 30000 sinhalese. But by a conspiracy vidiya bandara was killed in Jaffna.. Jaffna king took all vidiya bandaras things.Relic was also there. After portugese concured Jaffna they took that relic. And that is the relic they destroyed in Goa. Original relic was in Delgamu wihara untill Kandy sinhala kingdom begins. After establishing kandyan sinhalese kingdom king Wimala dharma suriya brought the holy tooth to Kandy. And untill today the holy tooth of Buddha remains in our Kandy. I my self dedicate my life to protect my Buddhas relic. Namo Buddhaya.

Sinhalese and Buddhism are inextricably linked. The Sinhalese believe that only if Buddhism is protected, the Sinhalese and Sri Lanka will be protected. Therefore, any sacrifice is made to protect Buddhism. Because of this, Buddhist monks are highly respected in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan tradition for thousands of years is that the kingship of the country belongs only to the person who owns and protects the tooth of the Buddha. Even today, Sri Lankans appoint only a Buddhist who can protect the Buddhist religion as the President of the country. When Sri Lanka was a colony, the British government negotiated with the Buddhist monks and promised an agreement to protect the Lord Buddha's tooth.

I can see Pali writing in Khmer/Cambodian letters at 1.06. They are indeed Buddhist mantra. It is sad to know that the Buddha's tooth has been stolen and destroyed by the Portuguese Archbishop of Goa. Even the tooth is destroy yet the Buddha's teaching will remain for thousands of year. As we have witnessed in the present time, Buddhism and the word of freedom have been spread around the world. Remember that love will make us grow even stronger when hatred will make them low! The Buddha said that those who try to throw sands into opposite direction of the wind, the sands will be thrown back to those people! Likewise Buddhism will never be destroyed by haters. Peace to everyone!

Similarly in 1794, Jagat Sena the general of Kashi Naresh ( Hindu King of Kashi) destroyed the Dharmarajika stupa in Sarnath and threw the casket of Buddha relics in Holy Ganga river. Later the casket was recovered from the the banks of the river in Bengal.
Jagat Sen used to believe that Buddhists are Ved-nindak ( people who rejected Vedas), hence they are demonic cult. He was also infuriated by the Buddhist rejection of caste hierarchy ( that some castes are pure & higher by birth because they have done good karma in pastlife) and untouchability ( that contact of certain castes leads to impurity). That's why he proudly destroyed the stupa.

Whoever you are you don't know history. The Buddha was long forgotten in India. It was the British who discovered that the religion of Buddhism flourishing across South East Asia was devoted to the same deity who was born in India. And this happened in the 1870s and 1880s. The Kashi Naresh would have no idea what the stupa even was because Indians had long forgotten him. Even in Bodh Gaya the temple and it's deity were forgotten after 14th century. I suggest you read John Keay India Rediscoverd to learn how ancient Indian history reemerged in the 19th century

Just as a knife has the capability to kill, it has its usefulness. The relic is an object of veneration that inspires faith but some people view it as an object of object of pride. That's why it's important to see things with wisdom. Wisdom turns wrong use into good use.

All 4 molar teeth of the Gothama Buddha is still preserved in Sri Lanka. The temple of the tooth holds one. The tooth taken on processions and on display is only a replica. The one destroyed by the Portugese was a replica held by the last king of Jaffna. The entire skelletal remains of the Buddha including his robe, the bowl he used to eat is still preserved in Sri Lanka where he lived all his life.

Thank you for this wonderful details presented on the Tooth Relic. There is a little mistake in the narration, that I would like to rectify regarding the story of the tooth relic as described in Dhathu Vamsa. Arahat Khema was male Arahath who was a disciple of Great Sariputta Maha Rahathan Vahanse (who was the chief male Bikku disciple - agra shravaka - of the Buddha himself). Khema Arahath Bikkuni who was the chief female disciple of the Buddha (Agra shravika), is a different individual altogether. However their names sound exactly the same and thus has lead to this confusion in the narration. As far as I am aware, all agra shravakas and agra shravikas of the Buddha, are destined to finish their lives before the Buddha. Thus Arahath Khema who was the Agra shravika of the Buddha, would have died before and would not have been present at the Buddha's parinirvana (cremation ceremony).
Just to clear the record once again so that everyone can benefit with the correct facts:
Dathu Vamsa states that during Buddha's parinirvana (cremation ceremony) Arahath Khema who was a male disciple of Sariputta Maha Rahathan Vahanse used his psychic powers and went into the fire and retrieved the lower left canine tooth during the cremation ceremony. This is the Buddha's tooth relic that you can find today in Kandy.
It would never have been given to the Portuguese after the Sri Lankans vigorously protected this for over 1200 years by then and there was protocols and safeguards in place by the time Portuguese came to be a threat. My ancestors and the Sinhalese people, carefully followed the tooth relic from Kotte to Kandy during this time (in the 1560) as there was another local threat to the tooth relic coming from Sethawaka Kingdom a few years later. This was one of the lowest points of Sri Lankan history to be frank.

Though Gauthama Buddha was born in India, the spread of Buddhism as a major religion happened outside India. Still Hinduism treats his as a great prophet with as much reverence and treats him as an avatar. But being an ancient religion with strong roots, it had absorbed most of Buddha's teaching into itself in the 7th century Hindu renaissance period. Therefore Srilanka which had preserved this relic has the dharmic right as Custodian to Holy teeth. If the LTTE had attempted to destroy it, they can only be labeled as the most anti Hindu. Any of the sites prophet of Buddhism are as holy to Hindus and only forms of worship may vary.

I am not sure if that is true. I read that some Hindu kings destroyed Buddhist temples and built Hindu temples on those grounds.

    • @karpasurya
      @karpasurya 2 года назад +1

@@Dan-xx5jq In no way it can be true. The reason is a Hindu temple construction has such a detailed procedure that it can never be built on any pre existing or existing structure. You need to understand lot more about Hindu temple construction than what what British historians have written with their half-baked or a still better term hardly-baked knowledge. They also did it for political reasons to divide and rule the vast Indian territory since they had very limited British fighting force. It might also have been written by religious fanatics in the garb historians.
However philosophies of both religions have lots of differences and that is the reason why it is not popular in India, since most of the Indian Kings had accepted Hinduism as a preferred state religion following their rituals and customs. Few kings patronized Jainism as the contribution of Jains to Indian written literature is enormous. Again it is not acknowledged, by the post independence historians as it could be a bitter truth as well.

A team of Archaeologists under the supervision of eminent Pakistani Archaeologist Dr Ihsan Ali found a casket during an excavation at Shalkandi stupa in 2003. The casket is stored at the Chakdara museum and is more than 2000 years old. It is assumed that it may be the casket in which the relic tooth was stored. There is a very high probability; as assumed by the archaeologists, but nothing is conclusive yet. The search and research are still on.

And the word Naga reffers to snakes. So here Naga world reffers to place where large Nagas(snakes) resides. People believed these type of large snakes were living under the ocean and near water bodies+they had their own worlds as well. So here it reffers to a different world.
