What happened to the Bowl of Buddha - From Kesariya Stupa to Kandahar and Taliban

  • Before his parinibbana Buddha gave his alms bowl to the Licchavis of Vaishali. Lichhavis built a large stupa to mark this event. The stupa was lost for centuries and was finally excavated in 1998 by the Archaeological Survey of India. But what happened to his Alms bowl? Did it really fall into the hands of the Taliban of Afghanistan? And what happened when Taliban found the Budda’s Bowl while they were destroying all the Buddhist artifacts displayed at the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul?
In Vaishali Buddha announced his approaching Parinibbana and he started his final journey along with his disciples. In deep sorrow, the Lichhavis of Vaishali kept following him towards Kushinagar and they were not willing to return. Finally to persuade them to return Buddha created an illusion of a river which finally compelled them to return. He gave them his alms bowl as a memorial and asked them to return to their respective homes.
Later the Licchavis built a mud stupa in memory of that event. This mud stupa was enlarged by King Ashoka during the third century BC. The Stupa is now known as Kesariya Stupa and is the highest stupa in the world.

O what a beautiful story of Buddha and his bowl. He was a prince but he gave humanity not a throne but a begger's bowl which appeared more valuable to him, there is no body in this world who could have done such a great sacrifice and feat. What a difference between Alexander the great and Buddha! If we all followed Buddha the world would have been a different place!

@@PuneethBHYou misunderstood me, I honour Buddha above any body else because of his ability to come down and take the garb of the mendicant. The moment you become possessive of your religion and turns into a fanatic you ceased to be a Buddhist. Buddha professed no religion, nor he claimed to be a prophet he just shared his experience after being enlightened. He stick to no dogma.

Sir, thank you so much for collecting highly important part of Buddha's history including Buddha's begging Bowal gifted to Vaisali Kingdom by the Buddha while departing towards Kushinagar. Yes, I had already visited Kesaria Stuppa and Vasaili Ashoka Pillar site during the end of 2019 and it was a Great satisfactory and unforgetable memory for me. It was very sad for us to observed that such an importat Buddhist Site was left in very poor condition and a bunch of Coolies were digging at the basement of the Kesaria Broken Stuppa at that time. I did't notice any Officer/Supervisory on the Site. We sat their for an hour for three times of circumbulance of the Stuppa and then read Buddhist Prayers thereafter we had started onward journey. Though Buddhism was not an outsider other religion who entered India with Military might and forcefully imposed their religions on Indians all most Nationeide. Though Buddhism was next to Hinduism and invented by the son of the soil and practiced by large number of people from lowest level people from Safaiwala to the most reknowned Samrat Ashoka whose name and fame is known to Worldwide. However, it is a matter of very sad and shameful that such a narow mindedness and strong partiality the above cited very important history site had left in the mecry of A.S.I. department.

It is mentioned in many Sri Lankan sources that the alms bowl of Buddha was in Sri Lanka. And in ancient times Sri Lankan kings have considered Buddhas alms bowl and buddhas tooth relic as the signs of the crown and even an indonesian king called Dharmaraja Chandrabhanu has invaded Sri Lanka on intention of taking these two relics but the problem is tooth relic remains in Sri Lanka upto this date but not the alms bowl. Can you explain what happened to alms bowl of Buddha that was in Sri lanka?

Not really. In the last few years, there has been increased efforts by the central and state governments to restore and promote Buddhist sites. The construction of the Kushinagara International Airport to bring in International Buddhist pilgrims to the sacred Buddhist sites. Previous Congress govt did nothing to promote any Dharmic structures. Thousands of temples and viharas lie in ruin whereas majority of funds of have just gone to Delhi's monuments of Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Humayuns Tomb.

Thank you for the video. But there is one thing that should be corrected (with no disrespect). The highest stupa is Jethawanaramaya in Sri Lanka. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetavanaramaya#:~:text=At%20122%20metres%20(400%20ft,of%20the%20Mahaviharaya%20of%20Anuradhapura.
