As a longtime Buddhist I can say without prejudice that Hinduism predated Buddhism. The Buddha himself was from a Hindu family. He didn't "invent" Meditation. He may have developed his own additional techniques but meditation was already in Hinduism long before him. So Buddhism was more of an "offshoot" if we're to correctly categorize it. Just as Protestantism is an offshoot of Catholicism.
If you take Hinduism and "simplify" it -- take away deity propitiation and just focus on meditation -- what you end up with is Buddhism. So there's Buddhism "in" Hinduism. Therefore Buddhism didn't decay in India. All Hindus practice Buddhism within Hinduism.

@hellboundtruck123 "Hindus" don't use that term. They are practitioners of Sanatana Dharma, which can be interpreted as "eternal order." It's not a single religion, but rather a set of spiritual paths. Some paths are dualistic and devotional while others are nondualistic and more philosophical.

I am a Buddhist scholar from South East Asia. I have studied Hindu philosophies as well. Like revered Rinpoche said, "Hindu-ism", "Buddh-ism" are just invented and imposed names by Westerners. First and foremost to understand why Buddhism never took great hold in India we must acknowledge the fact that in India Baudha-Dharma is just another branch of philosophy in "Hindu" thought (Darshana).
There are many darshanas in India that pre-date Buddhism. For example - Samkhya, Yoga, Jaina etc each with its own enlightened sage just like Buddha. Even today, there are spiritual men in India who are followed literally by millions and they have their own philosophies and they may go on to become as impactful as Buddha in a thousand years making themselves very distinct from what we call "mainstream Hinduism" now. So when you have like a dozen competing darshanas that can give you salvation, for Indians to take up Buddha-dharma en-masse made no sense. They could merrily be Krishna and Vishnu followers (Vaishnavas), Shiva followes (Sahivaites), Shakti followers, Advaita followers etc each with its own guru like Buddha, and texts, philosophies in abundance.
Also, like revered Rinpoche said, Islamic invasions played a huge part in uprooting whatever Buddhism existed in India too. While the Hindu dharmic traditions through existing social structures were able to organize and resist the imposition of Islam and fight against the destructions, unfortunately the Buddists, Jains, and some other Indian dharmic religions could not stand up to the onslaught.

It's not that Buddhism disappeared, it is simply assimilated in Hinduism. Hinduism doesn't have some fixed principles. It is dynamic and always keep changing with time. India has a tradition of following Enlightened people or Gurus or yogis. When Buddha was born, people were captivated by his teachings, so they spread quickly. In a way Indians were following Buddhist teachings at that time, but that doesn't necessarily means that they were thinking of Buddhism as an exclusive religion.
Their children would not exclusively follow these teachings but would also learns new teachings from wandering Gurus or Yogis or Naths etc. Even after Buddha dies, new Gurus came and spread their teachings. We had many famous gurus like Adi Shankaracharya or Nagarjuna. Their disciples would wander around India and spread their teachings. It was a tradition for Indian kings to invite such Gurus or Yogis, listen to their debates and following the practices of Gurus who won the debates. There are widely available records of such debates happening in courts of Indian kingdoms. Even today we have some gurus like Sadhguru etc whom people follow.
So in a way Hinduism is dynamic and always changing. Buddhism was just a phase which was popular at that time. People haven't forgotten those teachings. Those are assimilated in Hinduism, while people still kept seeking new ways to approach God and Spirituality.
I mean Hinduism have Vedic Philosoply, Buddhism, Vedanta, Puranic, Shavism, Vaishanvism, Stories of gods spread by devoted poets like Tulsidas spreading Ramayana or spread of Bhagvad Gita, teachings of Krishna. In each era, we had Gurus which gave their teachings about how to approach God and Spirituality and they kept assimilating in Hinduism.
Although, I would like to say that current so-called Gurus can't really be compared to old Gurus. Old gurus used to abstain from material attachment, living in hut, wearing minimal clothes, eating minimal food. They also used to meditate in secluded forests or mountains. And in such a way, they used to found new teachings. Nowadays Gurus just package old teachings in a complicated way and present it as their teachings. They enjoy all things that can be bought from money and are increasingly more political. So in a way, I think this new age of Social media is really bad for traditional ways of Hinduism. Rather than following Gurus, now it is better to read the already compiled teaching in Hinduism. In a way, we should close the lore of Hinduism and should not allow any further addition.

There were various schools of philosophy at the time, and there are differences in what Hinduism and Buddhism see as the nature of reality. But regardless of which ism we follow, both these eastern philosophical approaches are similar in a lot of ways and ultimately address the cessation of suffering or nirvana. Actually, I don't know if he is aware of or not, but it happened in around late 8th century. So In India we used to practice a system of Shastratha (More like a debate on interpretation of the teachings). Buddhism was on peak after Maurya and Ashoka empire, coz no Hindu priest or guru was able to defeat Bhuddist monks in Shastrath. The rules of these debates were that if you loose in the debate you whole heartedly follow the philosophy of the winner and make him your guru. That's how Buddhism rose in India and everywhere else. Its similar to how in Japan Dojo masters system used to be. If other Dojo defeat the master of another Dojo they used to go under the umbrella of the winning master. This was similar just instead of fight here it was a debate of their philosophies and teachings. So Buddhist defeated many Hindu monks for centuries and became the most practised belief in South Asia. Until, Adi Shankaracharya was born in 788. He obtained Hindu knowledge at a very young age and became a Vedic scholar and his interpretation gave birth to the new form (Interpretation/Darshan) of Vedic philosophies its called Adwait Vedanta. No Buddhist monks were able to defeat him in Shastratha and when defeated they became his disciples. He travelled throughout the region what is now called India and Pakistan and defated all the monks which led to decline of Buddhism in India & Pakistan.

Core reason is struggle between Hindus and Buddhist. Buddhism having being pan India religion posses enormous power politically which anyone would want to have it. Hindu Brahmin managed to convince kings likes Pushyamitra Sungha who would then go on massacre Buddhist scholars. At the same time Hindu Brahmins would twisted the Buddhist content with mixture of God, wars , violence and other mysticism, which is done mostly by twisting Buddhist Jatak katha and Jains similar folkare. In fact Ramayan is actually Buddhist jatak story earliest version of it predates to 1st century whereas Hindu ramayan written by valmiki can only be traced after 7th century. Destruction of Buddhist universities was another major blow to it's decline. Hindu Brahmins then occupy all the Buddhist Temples so much so Even the sanctuary sanctum of Buddhism the Bod gaya, Mahabodhi temple is controlled by Hindus Brahmins To this date. Hindu Brahmin would then go on to convert Hindu festival like Bijay Dashami, Dipawali, Chaat Puja into Hindu festival with special attribution to their fictional God. Hindus scripture are filled with verse like "All athiest and Buddha followers should be punished like a Theif". In short reason Buddhism decayed in India is simply part of survival of fittest which was slow and systematic process done by Hindus. But truth will prevail. Buddhism is once again being revived in India, with all historical events and heritages associated with it.

This can be clearly seen today in the case of Vajrayana "Buddhism" where very obviously the vast majority of its practices and teachings have nothing to do with the historical Buddha, but rather have come from so many other Indian spiritual beliefs and traditions that got woven into and incorporated into "Buddhism" over the centuries

Historically speaking, because people just slowly rejected it due its impractical nature, stress on monastic lifestyle and also their collaboration with foreign invaders due to politics. The Kushan empire that came right before the golden age Guptas were Buddhists from Bactria. Also the Hun invasions and the Buddhist reaction to it had a huge impact on the common man.But because both were dharmic religions, there was limited bloodshed between the two,if at all and both the kushans and Gupta respected the others religion during their rule.It continued to thrive in centers of learning like Nalanda and was generally respected and accepted as a nastika philosophy.Buddhism was not destroyed by Hinduism, contrary to what western universities today teach to create a separation between the two.Later Islamic invasions did the rest.

The fact that Buddha went and taught the masses proves he believed in social responsibility. Buddhism declined in the Indian Subcontinent because of Muslim Arab and Turkic invasions. Buddhism flourished in the North-Western and Eastern Indian Subcontinent. The North-Western part was swamped by invading Muslims who imposed Islam in the entire region that today forms Afghanistan, parts of the Balochistan region and the Khyber belt of Pakistan. In the Eastern part, the world-renowned centre of learning- the Nalanda University was burned down by the Muslim Turkic invaders and that just destroyed Buddhism in that area. So, even though Buddhism had been waxing and waning in the Indian Subcontinent even prior to these invasions by Muslims, the Muslim invasion gave it an irrecoverable blow.

He hasn't answered the question though.
1.The indic religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, are at its core principally the same. I would go to the extent of calling each sect(s) of the other; 'philosophy' is probably a better word than sect / religion in this case though. One can argue which one is which but the concept of Aum (Om) is at their core.
    2. Royal patronage - depending on which school of philosophy a certain empire belonged to - that sect received royal patronage. From BC through the first millennium AD, these religions saw crests and troughs in their following based on royal patronage they received.
    3. Most importantly - Adi Sankaracharya from modern day Kerala and his philosophy of Advaita ( non duality) ; that everything that exists is 'one' with the universe (Aum), and there is no separate God but oneself, helped re-establish Hinduism. Note that most of North India was Buddhis or Jains at this time, and converted to this advaitic Hinduism circa 8-9 century AD.
    4. Bhakti movement: later Bhakti movement established the concept of personal gods and almost annihilated other sects. This movement preached a personal connection with the 'supreme'. Basically saying it doesn't matter what and whom you worship - it's your personal belief system that matters as long as it is within certain ethical / moral boundaries. This struck a chord with the masses.
The argument presented in this video that several gods in Hinduism and Karma in Buddhism was a factor in Buddhism not being present in numbers it should otherwise have in India is an extremely lazy one. Several buddhistic sects are polytheistic with several million gods, and more importantly, Hinduism has the concept of Karma as it's core philosophy. Essentially, Buddhism and Hinduism are not very different. The people at that time didn't see anything unique or different that Buddhism could offer. From atheism, monotheism, henotheism to polytheism Hinduism covered a large 'real estate' of belief systems and considered Buddhism to be an extension (sub set) of Hinduism. So, while one can argue that Buddhism doesn't have followers in India; it can also be counter argued that all hindus are also buddhistic, and therefore 80% of India's population.

Let me answer this question and also correct some loose talk by the Rinpoche,
      1. In India "Hinduism" is defined as every practice that is NOT Abrahamic i.e. islamic, christian or Parsi. In short, Buddhism, Jainism , Hinduism, Sikhi etc. ALL come under "Hinduism".
      2. Hinduism does not have a Million "gods", that is a Abrahamic mistranslation and misunderstanding of Hindu scripture and practices.
      3. Gaya is one of the most important pilgrimage towns in India which is why Buddha himself went to Gaya. It was not "discovered" by the british, it was always known as Mahabodhi. British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham did dig up the Ashokan age temple with the seat after reading about it in Buddhist literature and knowing its location.
      4. Current day muslims in the Indian subcontinent are the original Buddhists who were forcibly converted to Islam. Since they did not have any social construct of Jaati (caste) to prevent their conversion, they were the first victims. Hindu philosophy was always to FIGHT for dharma (karma) and not avoid confrontation like Buddhists.
      5. In short Buddhism = Hinduism. Buddhism is just another panth (school) of Hinduism. Hinduism as very many schools.
      6. Most Hindus know this, its only Buddhists who want to see themselves as "separate" to establish some sense of Superiority who deny this and has internalized this denial. As the Rinpoche said, the older buddhis monks already know this to be true since they don't care much for political correctness.

In India, Buddhism survived due to Royal Patronage, once the Islamic era began, there was no such patronage. Jainism was supported by Merchants, Brahminic ritual trade helped Hinduism survive... Buddhism was the intellectual thought process, considered to be extravagant... and Buddhism really survived a lot of hostility. From China to Japan, they were in direct conflict with Taoism and Shinto.

@sunlovinsnowflake depends, a very highly placed source in the Tibetan system, who was a bonfide monk with a spiritual master told me he was guided by the deity Tara. And that Tara was not an abstraction. Even in Hinduism this tantra, vedanta, yoga, mimamsa, karmic mimasa, Sankhya etc are like different schools of thought, just like Buddhism... it is all part of the same setup or all are distinct in by themselves.... I find this classification of eastern schools to be highly misguided and erroneous... a vedanta follower will easily live with Buddhism but might not find tantra suitable. A Tibetan Buddhist might find tantra to be acceptable but might not find mimamsa acceptable... so classification, kn my view, is an Abrahamic construct that illsuits the east.

    • @adityaghildiyal6630
      @adityaghildiyal6630 11 месяцев назад +3

@@sunlovinsnowflakeinterestingly, in Hindu Tantra the same happens. Techniques, chants and tantra are not simply to "worship and praises" the deity, but to manifest the aspects of deity within ourselves. To build a closer connection with the deity. The ultimate goal is to become a walking, breathing, living manifestation of the deity, i.e. the practitioner merges with the deity. Very very similiar to achieving bodhisattva and becoming the Buddha.

I am a proud Sanatani "Hindu" and I love buddhas teachings because the ethics, morals, values are same but intellectual philosophies about the source of reality and consciousness are same yet different flavours/prespectives. these are all good and richness of Asian civilizations or Sanatana dharma. true enlightened beings unite people instead of dividing people by creating new religions. the less divisions the less friction and more peace and unity. why should be divide just because of intellectual wrestlings? we should only be divided on philosophical intelletual level but on rest levels there must be harmony. We love Dalai lama, other lamas and buddhas, when time will come and we get opportunity then we won't hesitate to even sacrifice our life for our dear Buddhists as a Kshtriya warrior varna myself.

perhaps another reason may be that buddha as such did not say much that was not already known, examined and kept aside... when buddha came on the scene, bharat was in a severe decline spiritually and there was a vacuum. plus buddha was a prince preaching down to the masses and not debating with scholars and it caught on fast.
but soon, buddhism needed to talk to scholars from other streams and soon enough interpretations of what buddha said needed to be made. but to be fair to buddhism, it was ready to do so, and thus came into being the various paths like sautrantika, vaibhashika, vijnanavada, sunyavada, and a collation of many or all of the above then some into tibetan buddhism.
buddhism failed in india when it could not win the debates with non dualists.
buddhists were holding their own or trying well with the dualists like nyaya vaiseshika, dualists vedantins, yoga, jains etc. most of them had their own dualistic interpretation of the upanishads. but the non dualistic vedanta in its pure form was revived by Adi Sankara and then buddhism simply crumbled in the debates with the the non dualist vedantis.
the path of buddhism that is nearest to non dual vedanta might be tibetan buddhism, which incorporated many thoughts of buddhism like theravada, vijnanvada, shoonyavada etc... it comes close, but it still hesitates to take the crucial last step becuase then ti will stop being buddhism and become non dual adviata vedanta.
this could be the major reason for decline of buddhism in india.
i object to the usage of the word decay. it is not a decay, it is a decline.
advaita vedantists dont disrespect or reject buddhism.. they use the thoughts of the schools like vijnanavada , shoonyavada etc as stepping stones to the final destination which is non dual advaita...

Interesting take on how the diversity of deities is too appealing for Sanatanis to consider switching to more austere Buddhism. Also interesting comment about the contemporary mindfulness stuff as being "shallow Buddhism."
For me the greater appeal of Advaita Vedanta is the recognition that only purusha (spirit) is real. That makes more sense to me than the Buddhist anatta teachings. However, I have heard that the Buddhist "not-self" concept has arisen through misinterpretation of the original texts, and that Buddha actually didn't teach that idea.

To be honest, most of India sees the Buddha-the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishu-as a god unto himself, and we enjoy applying his teachings to our daily lives. When I first asked my grandmother what Buddhism was, she told me that it was a sister religion to Hinduism. Although the names are different, the core principles are the same-love, respect, and the belief that everyone can learn from everyone.

Sanatana Dharma = Hinduism + Buddhism + Jainism + Sikhism
I don't understand why the WEST or the people living OUTSIDE India, Nepal, Bhutan, Srilanka & other Asian countries present it like a different religion.
I don't understand why the WEST see it as different religion.
Our core values were always same or you could say, you can easily see similarities between all the above mentioned religions.
You can see culture similarities, language similarities, mantra and shloka similarities, and the region where everything is originated is also same. I mean you can see it is somehow related to each other.
You can easily find similarities in all the holy books of these above mentioned religions. The common thing found in all these holy books is to promote peace, protect the weak, help everyone, respect your teachers and elders respect the nature, animals and humanity.
Sanatana Dharma is not a religion. It's a way of living life. Different texts give different lists of the duties, but in general sanatana dharma consists of virtues such as honesty, refraining from injuring living beings, purity, goodwill, mercy, patience, forbearance, self-restraint, generosity, and asceticism.
There are many ways to get moksha, mukti, samsara ( liberation from the cycle of Death and Rebirth ).
Just like "Siddhartha or Gautam Buddha also known as Shakyamuni" followed one of many methods of Sanatana Dharma to get out from the cycle of Reincarnation. People those who followed him were called boddhis. When their strength or number of followers practicing the same method increased.
The West started calling them Buddhism.
Same thing happened with the other religion as well.
People living In this region that we call south asia, worship all the gods and goddesses found in Sanatana Dharma. But we do also have a family god / godess or guardian that we worship on special occasions. ( Kul Dev / Kul Devi / Isht Dev / Ishta Devata)
Let's make a Hypothetical situation with an example what Western Countries did:
My family god is shiva and my friends family god is Vishnu and someone else family god might be durga maa.
We live in a community where my whole community is of 100 people who worship shiva.
After 500 years the community population increased to 100k ( 1 lacs ) so will people start calling us Shivaism, Vishnuism and Durgaism?
We are always and will be forever be called the people who follow "Sanatana Dharma".
No matter what you call yourself today, the roots will always tell you what fruit you will bear.
    That's it.
    Jai shree Ram
    Jai shree krishna
    Jai shree Buddha
    Jai shree Adinath
    Jai shree Mahavira
    Jai shree Waheguru
We are following the principle that were taught to us. We are following our Dharma. Not the today's meaning of Dharma (religion) but spiritual dharma ( Kartavya - duties, commitment, role, responsibility, obligations).
And yeah! Not only we worship gods, we also worship humans (parents, teachers & elders) animals, trees, mountains, rivers, sun, moon, planets, stars and Universe.
After all, sound of the Universe is Om, Aum, 🕉️.
    Scientifically proven.
Sanatana Dharma is not a religion. I'm saying this because a religion is always with a founder concept (a human figure). Sanatana Dharma does not have a founder. Nobody knows when and who started it. Only thing we know it is the oldest. We follow the teachings that was provided to us in Bhagwat Geeta, Ramayan, Mahabharat and the 4 Vedas and Upnishad.
You will find people practice multiple concepts in Sanatana Dharma.
    In Sanatana Dharma :-
    - people those who believe in multiple gods.
    - people those who believe in single god.
    - people those who believe there is no god.
    - people those who believe god is male.
    - people those who believe god is female.
    - people those who believe god is both half male and half female.
    - people those who believe in no god but understands the Universe follows the concept of karma and dharma. Everything is depended on the actions you took in your past life, that will affect your present and decide your future life.
    - people those who believe in no god but there is a supreme being that is guiding & protecting everything.
In the End, We All are the followers of Sanatana Dharma.

      Let me clear your confusion.
Sanatan dharma is only Hinduism .
The word Sanatan refers - A religion which has no founder or important person.
All religions have founders or main person ex:- buddha in Buddhism, mahavir in Jainism, guru nanak in sikhism ,mohammad in islam ,jesus in Christianity..
But Hinduism has no any founder not even main person .it is updated time to time specially by rishis( real bramhins) ,Avtars of god ,saints etc.
Hinduism is a dharma which consists of almost all types of phylosophies including science, mathematics, spirituality, astrology etc.etc.
Problem is that people doesn't like Hindu word and almost all buddhist are hindu haters .. that's why instead of using hindu we use Santan dharma .and tells them u r also part of our Santan dharma.. indirectly we say Hindu hi tumhare bapp hai😂

The actual reason for this is the way the Vedas was interpreted by Buddha. Until 1000 years ago, Jainism and Buddhism was popular amongst kings and masses, cause the vedic rituals of animal sacrifice and sacrifice during prayer and yagna was seen as cruel and barbaric and people were moving away from Sanatana Dharma in the hope for find a non violent equivalent of the path. However, this is where Adi Shankara came in to the scene, and with his Bakthi movement, reinterpreted the vedic rituals to be much more representative than actual, aka, use of kumkum in place of blood etc. and help spread work of advaitham, aka thou art God, God is within. With this there was a literal revival of Hinduism amongst kings and general population, which led a reconversion of population back to practicing Sanatana Dharma from Jainism and Buddhism.

As a Jain, let me answer this question in simpler way.
As we all know "Sanatan Sanskriti" (the main mother of indic religions) has 2 paths 1st Shraman Sanskriti (Jainism & Bhudhism) & 2nd Vedic Sanskriti (Hinduism)
Now there was a time when Shraman Sanskriti (Jainism & Bhudhism) was prominent in Indian subcontinent, but then came Aadi Shankaracharya ji (a Vedic Sanskriti guru) who by all means did everything to spread the 2nd Stream of sanatan (Vedic Sanskriti aka Hindusim), due to which Jainism & Bhudhism started decreasing in the subconscious.
I hope it answers your questions.
