The best and simplest analogy I ever heard about karma came from S.N. Goenka: 'If you plant a mango tree, you get mangos. Don't plant a bitter neem tree if you want sweet mangos.' So simple, but so true. We are constantly doing things which do not align with the outcomes we desire, and we are so often unaware of it. We need to realise this truth to be free.

For people who haven't reach a certain understanding through practice and not mere reading books, it is difficult for them to change the conditions they were born in and hence being 'trapped in the six realms of consciousness'. This question is quite common among people whose religions are Abrahamic religions. In Buddhisme there is neither predestination nor free will as everything is a continuum of causes n effects.

I'm sure u know at first people just called Hindu "Sanata Dharma" that refers to any belief in some parts of India. Hindu and Buddhism became religions and were labeled by people who did not practice the truth.

Karma in my opinion is not predestined. If it were, then it would fatalistic. Karma is dynamic. Is karma free will? It is not either. Our decisions, actions etc are the results of our upbringing at home, based on culture, traditions, beliefs, customs, the information that we get, education etc. How could it be free will if in Buddhism, everything hinges from the law of cause and effect. So, in short, our actions are not predestined. There is no authority that controls you to do this or that, you have choices. But actions are not free will either as why you do something, or the way you think and behave depends on so many factors; culture, faiths, traditions, the way you were brought up in the family etc

I'm of the mind that rather than there being no seperation between free will or destiny, there infact is no such thing as free will or destiny they're both part of the illusion lol. There is no choice but to be in the frame of the movie in conjunction with all else that is in that frame. The image in the frame changes from frame to frame and the identity "your name here" acts in perfect harmony with the rest of the image in the frame (the frame being your immediate experience). The only thing that you have agency over is WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR ATTENTION within the frame. Karma is the attempt to do something as an individually existing separate self within the frame. The illusion (created by language) is that there is a separately existing "I" that is determining the actions of "your name here." So we are free as to what we pay attention to in each frame of the movie but we cannot change anything about the image appearing in the frame

Their “free actions” and “free responses” lay the foundations for future imprisonment through the establishment of causes and conditions to ripen later in the form of limitations and obstructions. The root cause for the yearning for “free expression” can be found in the non-acceptance of the present moment and the underlying identification with a self. The only escape is through an absolute acceptance of our TRUE NATURE AS INDIVISIBLE WITH THE TRUE NATURE OF ALL PHENOMENA. Our inability to accept that reality will have consequences, such as the endless accumulation of karma. The skilful Path is the way of sowing beneficial seeds of karma that eventually will lead to the realisation of true reality beyond the impact of karma. Karma can never be the “producer” of insight and enlightenment. Only our primordial wisdom, inherent within every living being, can be the direct cause for Buddhahood and enlightenment. Due to emptiness, impermanence and the truth of interdependent origination we will find ways to walk our path towards greater insights and eventual liberation if we learn to be skilful in our understanding towards our present situation and the relative principles of karma. In this way karma can become our best ally in our progress towards liberation.

The way I understand it is that it is both. For example, if I have been greedy all my life, that habitual tendency would strongly affect my next action. It is thus pre-destined as a result of my prior actions. However, this does NOT mean I cannot stop being greedy if I really want to. Looking at it from this angle, it is then free will.

Upon awakening from a dream, the realization dawns that karma holds no true significance; it is merely an illusion. In the world beyond your dreams, there is no longer a concept of karma. With this understanding, you naturally refrain from generating negative karma and instead harbor good intentions for your fellow human beings. While there is no obligation to do good, the absence of negative karma becomes an inherent aspect of your awakened state.
Carma means action.There is no free will just options. The more options one has the more free he feels. That is why when you have money you feel more free because you have plenty of choices. Choices give the illusion of freedom. That is how they enslaved us. It was easy though. People do not like truth and responsibility. The more you do the more Carma you create. So try to do nice things that will justifie your Carma. One has to learn to live peacefully within him self. Time and Space do not exist. They are just qualities of the mind. Think of karma as a train that's headed somewhere fueled by your past actions and you are the passenger. There is no free will when you are the passenger. But you have the opportunity to upgrade yourself to the front operator cabin where you gain clarity in vision and take full control of the train. Clarity and control is free will but true free will's purpose is to bring the train to a complete stop nothing more nothing less.

My personal take on this after what I believe is true is that Karma is at the very beginning caused by free will. A blank slate with no pre-existing “past” karma to affect that present moment. And so that individual is pure and free and chooses some path (karma) to experience. Over time, due to naiveness and ignorance (like an archetypical child), one might make decisions (karma) that might not be so “positive” for example. and so this builds up karmic debts in that individual which would in a way have to be offset based on karmic laws eventually. and so overtime, free will seems to not be there due to past tendencies being built up and causing certain karmic debts that would have to be paid in certain fixed situations in “future” lifetimes. Free will is always there and karmic debts that can’t be avoided are there to allow one to correct one’s “erroneous” action along the way.
Karma is a response to the impulse sent into the vibrational field around us. It gets back to sender multiplied by the similar vibrations sent by others.
Understand this way , you are standing and asked to take one of your feet above the ground ( now you are free can choose whichever feet) once you lifted one of the feet if asked to again lift other feet too … you can’t your free will is gone now as there is already existing cause so karna dictates free will or precisely said destiny Since we can never know the full causal chain of karma we can pretend to use free will to take the best course of action …intended result may or may not bear fruit that’s the best one can do .

So in other words life is a dream and people are asking on the level of dream, not realising that on the level truth, it being a dream means it (just like in a dream) isn’t real, only realised once you wake up (enlightenment). As I write this there are 83 comments and you are the only one who gets it and/or expresses clearly: life is but a dream (suggesting that life is a dream is the fastest way to end any conversation, that's why Dzongsar Khyentse is so careful, I guess). But unlike other dreams the dream goes on after awakening: lucid living. You still experience life as the person you previously exclusively identified with but you now know that you are dreaming and therefore your essential nature is consciousness. As in any dream.
Life is a dream but dream is true. Action has consequences within that dream or next dream. But realised being enlightened ones, will power & mind is so strong that they will be able to cut their all Karma & won't react to predestination happenings in their life, they will be able to choose the right path to select which Karma to do.
To put it simply karma just means your inertia to get caught up with certain people, conditions and situations. Like bees are used to honey , and flies are used to shit.
Every Thing especially any action must be a karma. It has equal but opposite reaction. Karma is in various forms: Your direct conscious karma, your sub/unconscious activities, your parents karma that affects you, your species karma, your evolutionary karma, your molecular karma, your atomic karma, your Planck's karma, and so on. Every cause followed by its respective effects are karma.
That's happened to me before all the time. Like I had a saki decanter and suddenly I come in the dream. And the saki was blue colored and I was trying to understand why it was blue. It wasn't until waking I realized it was absinthe.

Action & consequences both r part of Karma. But in ultimate reality Karma doesn't work. It only effective in Aham Britti Ego Mind. It doesn't effect the True self.

This is the most confused person and answer i saw. Guru is supposed to simplify. He has overly complicated it, and dint answer the Q. Here is my learnings from Hinduism (parent of Buddhism -- buddhi means intelect in Sanskrit) 1) intellect is fluid and two sided knife. U can cut in anyway u want (free will). So, dont depend on it overly (mistake of the above presenter). Its a tool to be used carefully in a limited setup. 2) karma ia basically cause n effect. 3) at macro level, key milestones in ur journey are predestined. Based on your freewill you will reach the milestones in different paths. Your karma dictates the degree of pain/misery/happyness in your path. 3) if u work and build a strong freewill, using karma, you can change the predestined milestones , and make your own path and destination (if u really desire so).
Buddhist can not answer these questions. only Advitha philosophy can answer to any questions. Because Advitha philosophy is based on Upanishads which are ultimate knowledge for absolute truth.

For people who haven't reach a certain understanding through practice and not mere reading books, it is difficult for them to change the conditions they were born in and hence being 'trapped in the six realms of consciousness'. That is, ordering coffee in this example. One will need to 'accumulate' sufficient merits to change or upgrade conditions of their existence, in practice. This question is quite common among people whose religions are Abrahamic religions. In Buddhisme there is neither predestination nor free will as everything is a continuum of causes n effects.

I'm sure u know at first people just called Hindu "Sanata Dharma" that refers to any belief in some parts of India. Karma in my opinion is not predestined. If it were, then it would fatalistic. Karma is dynamic. Is karma free will? It is not either. Our decisions, actions etc are the results of our upbringing at home, based on culture, traditions, beliefs, customs, the information that we get, education etc. How could it be free will if in Buddhism, everything hinges from the law of cause and effect. So, in short, our actions are not predestined. There is no authority that controls you to do this or that, you have choices. But actions are not free will either as why you do something, or the way you think and behave depends on so many factors; culture, faiths, traditions, the way you were brought up in the family etc
As per Shri Ramana Maharshi everything is predetermined based on our past karmas. The only free will we have to react to the situations.

There is no choice but to be in the frame of the movie in conjunction with all else that is in that frame. The image in the frame changes from frame to frame and the identity "your name here" acts in perfect harmony with the rest of the image in the frame (the frame being your immediate experience). The only thing that you have agency over is WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR ATTENTION within the frame.
Karma is the attempt to do something as an individually existing separate self within the frame. The illusion (created by language) is that there is a separately existing "I" that is determining the actions of "your name here."

Exactly! You summed it up very well. In the name of “free will” people build themselves a prison. Their “free actions” and “free responses” lay the foundations for future imprisonment through the establishment of causes and conditions to ripen later in the form of limitations and obstructions. The underlying motivation for their “free expressions” pave the way for future experiences of non-freedom. The root cause for the yearning for “free expression” can be found in the non-acceptance of the present moment and the underlying identification with a self. The only escape is through an absolute acceptance of our TRUE NATURE AS INDIVISIBLE WITH THE TRUE NATURE OF ALL PHENOMENA. Our inability to accept that reality will have consequences, such as the endless accumulation of karma.
The skilful Path is the way of sowing beneficial seeds of karma that eventually will lead to the realisation of true reality beyond the impact of karma. Karma can never be the “producer” of insight and enlightenment. Only our primordial wisdom, inherent within every living being, can be the direct cause for Buddhahood and enlightenment. Nevertheless, beneficial or positive karma is said to be of vital importance to clear the way for our own wisdom to arise. The process of accumulating beneficial karma is sometimes call to accumulate merit within the Buddhist traditions. The only free choice we have is to accept the present moment as it is. That where we must begin! To accept something does not mean to cling or wish for something. It does not mean we want to encourage all those factors that’s holds us back from deeper insights, but it also doesn’t mean we make our ignorance and clinging into an enemy to be fought against either. It just simply means to accept whatever conditions we’re locked up in at the moment, and then work with that in whatever skilful ways we can. Due to emptiness, impermanence and the truth of interdependent origination we will find ways to walk our path towards greater insights and eventual liberation if we learn to be skilful in our understanding towards our present situation and the relative principles of karma. In this way karma can become our best ally in our progress towards liberation.

The way I understand it is that it is both. For example, if I have been greedy all my life, that habitual tendency would strongly affect my next action. It is thus pre-destined as a result of my prior actions. However, this does NOT mean I cannot stop being greedy if I really want to. Looking at it from this angle, it is then free will.

As long as you remain unable to awaken from your dream, karma functions as your reality. In other words, until you attain Arahantship and achieve enlightenment, it is advisable to avoid engaging in negative karma. Focus on cultivating positive actions, as they directly influence the course of your life. This is particularly relevant because you are still bound by the limitations of your dreams. Upon awakening from a dream, the realization dawns that karma holds no true significance; it is merely an illusion. In the world beyond your dreams, there is no longer a concept of karma. With this understanding, you naturally refrain from generating negative karma and instead harbor good intentions for your fellow human beings. While there is no obligation to do good, the absence of negative karma becomes an inherent aspect of your awakened state.

Think of karma as a train that's headed somewhere fueled by your past actions and you are the passenger. There is no free will when you are the passenger. But you have the opportunity to upgrade yourself to the front operator cabin where you gain clarity in vision and take full control of the train. Clarity and control is free will but true free will's purpose is to bring the train to a complete stop nothing more nothing less.

My personal take on this after what I believe is true is that Karma is at the very beginning caused by free will. A blank slate with no pre-existing “past” karma to affect that present moment. And so that individual is pure and free and chooses some path (karma) to experience. Over time, due to naiveness and ignorance (like an archetypical child), one might make decisions (karma) that might not be so “positive” for example. and so this builds up karmic debts in that individual which would in a way have to be offset based on karmic laws eventually. and so overtime, free will seems to not be there due to past tendencies being built up and causing certain karmic debts that would have to be paid in certain fixed situations in “future” lifetimes.
Free will is always there and karmic debts that can’t be avoided are there to allow one to correct one’s “erroneous” action along the way.
Karma is a response to the impulse sent into the vibrational field around us. It gets back to sender multiplied by the similar vibrations sent by others.
Understand this way , you are standing and asked to take one of your feet above the ground ( now you are free can choose whichever feet) once you lifted one of the feet if asked to again lift other feet too … you can’t your free will is gone now as there is already existing cause so karna dictates free will or precisely said destiny
Since we can never know the full causal chain of karma we can pretend to use free will to take the best course of action …intended result may or may not bear fruit that’s the best one can do .

So in other words life is a dream and people are asking on the level of dream, not realising that on the level truth, it being a dream means it (just like in a dream) isn’t real, only realised once you wake up (enlightenment). Hence the answer being, on the level of dream, karma is cause and effect, but on the level of truth, an illusion
As I write this there are 83 comments and you are the only one who gets it and/or expresses clearly: life is but a dream (suggesting that life is a dream is the fastest way to end any conversation, that's why Dzongsar Khyentse is so careful, I guess). But unlike other dreams the dream goes on after awakening: lucid living. You still experience life as the person you previously exclusively identified with but you now know that you are dreaming and therefore your essential nature is consciousness. As in any dream.
Life is a dream but dream is true. Action has consequences within that dream or next dream. But realised being enlightened ones, will power & mind is so strong that they will be able to cut their all Karma & won't react to predestination happenings in their life, they will be able to choose the right path to select which Karma to do.

Every Thing especially any action must be a karma. It has equal but opposite reaction. Karma is in various forms: Your direct conscious karma, your sub/unconscious activities, your parents karma that affects you, your species karma, your evolutionary karma, your molecular karma, your atomic karma, your Planck's karma, and so on. Here is my learnings from Hinduism (parent of Buddhism -- buddhi means intelect in Sanskrit)
1) intellect is fluid and two sided knife. U can cut in anyway u want (free will). So, dont depend on it overly (mistake of the above presenter). Its a tool to be used carefully in a limited setup.
2) karma ia basically cause n effect.
3) at macro level, key milestones in ur journey are predestined.
Based on your freewill you will reach the milestones in different paths. Your karma dictates the degree of pain/misery/happyness in your path.
3) if u work and build a strong freewill, using karma, you can change the predestined milestones , and make your own path and destination (if u really desire so).

Buddhist can not answer these questions. only Advitha philosophy can answer to any questions. Because Advitha philosophy is based on Upanishads which are ultimate knowledge for absolute truth.
