- The Sony RX1 & RX1R delivered some of the best images we'd ever seen when they launched, but they suffered from painfully slow autofocus. Now, Sony has launched the follow up, with a number of major improvements. How does this new camera fare when put up against the outstanding Leica Q? We went to the Glenbow Museum to find out!

A quick note for using the Turbo Ace Jockey:
We were unaware at the time, but the jockey is designed to be removed from the waist support while filming. Doing this will reduce vertical movement dramatically. If left in the holster, the jockey works great as a support, but will not get you the benefits of the fourth axis stabilization.

As always a great review. You are the kings of camera reviews on youtube. Looking forward to see more of it.
*goes to study for midterm exam, sees a new tcstv video

+pat dinco same here :D
This is my favorite camera ever. I can't wait for the mark 3.
Imagine: 5-axis IBIS, eye AF, improved screen/EVF, tethered shooting, better battery, increased buffer.
Honestly the size is perfect, but if they had to increase physical size to add features, that's fine. The Leica Q's handling is fine. Sony should make a Leica Q-styled body with those features I mentioned.

Hey, TCS folks! I love your channel and get so much out of it. I work in a camera shop in Maine, USA and often don't get to see the newest goodies quickly so your reviews & previews keep me up to date. Thanks so much & keep up the great work! Someday I want to tour your shop & visit Calgary! Cheers!
Welcome back guys. Nice to see you on RUclips again :)
+Chris Winter We posted an episode last week!
Jordan @ TCSTV
+TheCameraStoreTV Like he said welcome back!!! :OOOO
comparing image vs the a7r2 was an awesome idea.
jesus you are like the most well-spoken person i've ever heard
Was curious about this camera - really appreciate your quality reviews! When it comes time to buy, it'll be from you guys! The gallery shots reminded me of a time when I was filming in the Agnes Art Gallery at Queen's University... unbeknownst to me, I was filming just a few feet away from a Rembrandt! :)
Very good review!
Nice review. I think the Leica Q has something special about the files from it I can't quite put my finger on but the Sony cameras are certainly technically impressive.
The in-shop video sequence comparing the Sony RX1 to the Leica Q had quite a sickly green tinge to it that wasn't very pleasant to watch. Apart from that another great review. The museum in the opening sequence was very nice. I find museums very tranquil places to hang out in...which I suppose is the intention!
Best camera review team!
FYI: my RX1R is still one of my fave cameras to bring along.... with Focus Magnification I love shooting with it in MF mode... image quality is spectacular.
Good review, y'all... I think I'll just hang on to my RX1R for now.
Every time the intro song starts I shout "Welcome back TCS viewers, Its Chris Nichols here..." and my girlfriend has no idea what I am on about because I have my headphones in.... Every time!

This about the 4 Axis Jockey Stabilizer at the end of the review. When it is locked into the cup, it acts much like a Steadicam and would require a heel-toe walk. Set the locking cone all the way up so you can easily pull it in n out of the cup to walk around and it should work wonder. If you wish to have the 4 Axis stabilization and still be mobile without worrying about your steps then I would recommend adding the Ready Rig on top of it.
What an excellent and beautifully shot video. Great job!
Thank you for the review. I am soon to be one of those people torn between "one or the other" as I am going through a purist phase photography and, given limited time due to work and other commitments, I am finding it a real drag carrying around heavy DSLR gear that actually puts my off from, as opposed to encouraging me, to go and shoot. I love prime lenses, and have always used them on DSLRs in favour of zooms (weight, more inconspicuous, sharper, less distortion, faster and better coma control all being major considerations).
So the RX1R MkII and the Leica Q - tough, tough choice isn't it? In many ways a shame there aren't any third or fourth options out there to smooth the way forward a little, but, these two it is. On the one hand I like the sheer value for money of the Sony and the incredible matched sensor / lens combo. It has that pop up viewfinder, which put me off the Sony RX1 models. It has excellent dynamic range and low light performance. I don't personally care about this 4K waffle right now: until TV can transmit seamless 4K high resolution broadcasts (and that takes a lot of bandwidth to do so), I am still not going to care until then... 4K is, for me, a gimick at the moment and only really useful if you use a 4K display permanently at home, or love sitting in watching home videos all day at 4K, or, are a dedicated pro (and then you are not going to buy one of these for that purpose anyway). 1080p is more than adequate. On the negative side, I wish Sony had given the camera a 1/8000 sec shutter speed instead of 1/4000 - the idea of having to fiddle with ND filters is a bit annoying, and the Leica shines there with its superior lens speed and fastest shutter speed. The viewfinders: Sony more than adequate, the Leica exceptional, of course. The intuitive feel, handling, menus and lack of buttons is an appeal on the Leica, and the all important very subjective "Leica look" to images in the colour, contrast and life Leica images seem to all have.
The thing that is tearing at me most is the lens: 28mm on the Leica, 35mm on the Sony. If the Leica had been fitted with a 35mm lens with the 24 megapixel sensor, I would have immediately have been sold, no questions asked. The trouble is, less bokeh on a 28mm than a 35mm at close quarters, and the further away your subject gets, the less bokeh very quickly. 28mm is far less useful as a portrait focal length too. Also, cropability: you will need to crop more severely at your 24 megapixel image to extract close details you may notice in shot, whereas the Sony with its 42.4 megapixels, cropability is immensely powerful an option. But on the flipside you might sometimes miss that extra 7mm of width! I dunno, the decision is so tough and a big choice it is given the prices of these two. I think I am going to have to have a major play with them first and go through the grinder! The Leica is going to be a massive temptation, I know it will be - I have used an M before. But I know I am going to have to apply more than heart to this purchase, and add my head in there too. If there is any further advice from anyone who has been through this painstaking decision, I would really like to hear your experience and your reasons for making the choice you did.
For the record, I love doing street/ urban, family/ friends, general photography, portrait, occasional landscape (I know I can stitch Sony images if the width proves a problem, but out of camera would be easier in the Leica), some close up, etc. Many thanks again.
I use my camera for my vlogs, and some photos. I currently have a canon SX160is. I'm super outdoorsy and I travel a bunch. Any recommendations? I tried the a Sony HX50V and I feel like the frame rate.. at least that's what I think it was, didn't suit me. I walked my the camera and did a hop to side to side and it couldn't keep up with my motion. The stabilization wasn't very good either. I also feel like Sony has it's own filter of sorts because everytime I see footage shot on Sony it seems to have the same colorcast. I guess I'm looking for something idiot proof and adventure friendly.
And another Sony camera has been released yet again, what a surprise.
sorry that Canon sucks
They release more cameras than lenses lol
great scene where you directed Jordan!
sony is the meaning of the photography, end of story this is the best 35mm camera ever
Jordan, it might be time to give glidecam another try. The Devin Graham Signature Series glidecam is amazingly good in many of the ways that the prior HD versions were not quite great... AND! You can flip it over and have it balanced for low shots in a couple of seconds! I love it (obviously). Lol
Great review guys! On a technical side, if you wear headphones you can hear an electronics sound during the whole video, like radio interference.
A good way to check for Moiré is by taking a photo of printed magazines from the 70's or 80's
Ronin movements were great! Keep up the great work.
Awesome video guys, thank you. I am currently trying to decide between the Leica Q and the RX1R II, so I am very grateful for the little comparison in the middle of the video. One question I have is, do either of them have any weatherproofiness? Either documented or experiential?
I read the Leica Q is NOT weather proof.
Thank you for this video, what is the technical or application purpose of this camera?
Thank you for the video! And congratulations on your newborn!! :)
as usual, nice review. not a video guy, so not worried about those cons, but every so often i look for another pocketable camera where image quality/low ISO performance shines. this might do the trick for my first sony try.
Awesome Review guys. Will love to see you guys do a Review on the new D500 and D5 soon =)
Nice choice of location. Hope to see more picks like that in 2016.
@Jordan - Could you get away with shooting the episodes using a smaller 3-axis gimbal, such as the Pilotfly H1+ or similar products?
+Rob “Lunatique” Chang Sure, but the lighter gimbals will tend to suffer from worse vertical movement. The weight of the larger gimbals actually helps stabilize the 4th axis.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Jordan, which wireless setup were you using for this video? I noticed a bit of high-frequency noise only when Chris was speaking in the museum -- it doesn't sound like ambient noise but rather something being generated by the wireless system or mic preamp.
+This Does Not Compute We went back to our old Sony UWP-130s for this episode, since I had loaned out our D11s. We did get a bit of interference, not surprising since there's so much security at the museum.
Jordan @ TCSTV
You're a man of perfection.
Leica forever! Nice location.
Did you really do a resolution test shooting through window glass???
Jordan. Thanks for your reply it helps. Tony
wow, high ISO without noise?
Would have bought one if it had full frame 4K a flippy screen you can see from the front. The images are beautiful though and the advantages of a big sensor with a fixed lens can't be overstated.
Love to see a comparison of Leica Q and RX1r ii
Love your pocket-sized weight bag at 4:07! Is it made out of osmium?
I would have liked to see a test for street photography. it is known that MK 1 was not really good for this type of shooting and would like to see MK 2 in action. other than that great video as always .. keep them coming and thanks.
I have the sony rx1r and was very happy with it for 3 years. This was the only camera I had. I was frustrated with the AF , so I decided to buy a new camera. I pre-ordered the Leica Q, because of the 28 mm . I do a lot of street photography and always did want to use a 28 mm lens. Now I am a little bit concerned after reading steve huffs sony rx1rii reviews and your video. Is the image quality from the sony rx1rii so much better then the leica Q? I did test the leica Q and I was overwhelmed how the camera did feel in the hand. My budget is around 4000 dollar. Witch one would you choose? Jan
+Jan Aldelhof Hallo ?! Can someone help me who has experience with both camera's.... Thanks Jan
+Jan Aldelhof The image quality is better Jan but keep in mind there are SOOO many more important things in a camera then image quality. If the Leica Q felt good to you and its in your budget go for it. It takes gorgeous pictures, handles well, and I like the 28mm lens better for composing. The Sony will out shine it in studio tests and tripod work and is a fantastic street camera too but if the Q speaks to you, its the best choice for you. Frankly on paper every other camera is better than Leicas for quality vs price, but its the design, feel, and enjoyment shooting them that make them worth while.
Chris @ TCSTV
Thank you for your comment! It am going to buy the Q. Thanks for your video , they are awesome!
Hi, loved your little section on the flash capabilities, not seen this mention anywhere else. Thank you. I have to say I didn't really understand it, where can I get more information on this? Also I wonder if you canuse it with off camera flash? Thanks again. Tony.
+Tony Greenfield The example photo was shot with an off-camera strobe. Due to the nature of a leaf shutter, you can achieve very fast sync speed with any strobe. A more common focal-plane shutter will only sync between 1/160-250th sec, unless high speed sync is used, which greatly reduces flash output. Maybe we'll talk about it in an upcoming educational episode.
Jordan @ TCSTV
+TheCameraStoreTV which cameras have a leaf shutter? How can one tell? Is it mentioned in the specs and is it common? Thanks and thanks for the 2 big laughs at the end of the episode!😀
love your reviews they are awesome
love your reviews they are awesome ik
The bad, your stuck with that fixel focal lengths lens.
The good, what a damn nice Zeiss it is
Was looking forward to this review since you guys attended the Sony event in NYC. Not disappointed :)
Another great video. Thank you!
Enjoyable review.Do you still get an aps-c option,i like the idea of a 52mm fov as well.
+Zawnguy No crop option in-camera. Struck me a bit odd.
Jordan @ TCSTV
I actually regret a bit that i didnt buy this or leica q the last year. Now its too late, X1D is coming... But my ideal dream camera would be a fixed zeiss makro planar RX645 under 700 grams with the full frame medium format 100 mp sensor.
If Sony improves battery life like the Q (400 shots) and adds a touchscreen I will buy one. I'm just afraid if I bought a RX1R2 right now an updated version would come out a few months down the road & the price would go down $500-$700. I'm gonna be honest Chris I thought the Sony from looking @ the two would have a better grip.
ps: Does anyone know how many Sony has sold since its release of the RX1R2 vs the Leica Q?
You guys are awesome.
Jordan, what you shooting the videos with? Sony? and are you trying to shoot continuous autofocus with native lenses? I've been too with mixed results. I'd love to see a video on this, and a comparison of the continuous autofocus across the Sony range and in different light conditions maybe. I use the 28mm f2 by the way. sometimes 16mm pancake switching into super 35 mode.
+PIGMINTFILM This was shot on an A7S II on a Ronin/Jockey rig. I never use autofocus, this was all manually focused. During the take, I just try to maintain a consistent distance from Chris.
Jordan @ TCSTV
+TheCameraStoreTV Based on principal Jordan? Have you given it a go? It's actually very good most of the time. I find low light makes it struggle. Face detection can help too if theres not a background crowd of faces of course. I think though that the A7rii actually handles the continuous autofocus better than the a7sii. More focus points I think?
I know Dave Dugdale is happy enough to use it (when it works) on gimbals, as are some others. Give it a try!
+PIGMINTFILM The speed of the focus moving has an emotional impact (fast pulls are exciting and intense, slow pulls are more natural) and I don't want the camera making that decision for me. If I needed Chris to move a large distance in the frame, I may consider using AF, but I haven't needed that shot yet.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Jordan what series of Gitzo was that you used in the video?
Using the word "bargain" for either of these cameras? TD
is this a good camera for someone new in photography?
So you like the Leica Q IQ & look overall better than the Sony RX1R2 even though the Sony has 42mp & better micro contrast?
The big question is... will Sony support the RX1R II by way of firmware updates to tweak this body or simply keep releasing more bodies thus bypassing the value of such an imaging tool. I, as an RX1 (mki) owner am very happy with my camera but if we could have only a few percent more focusing speed (and EYE AF) it would mean a lot. These tools are not cheap. PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS SONY!
I don't think Eye AF and faster focusing are merely firmware upgrades George: they require sensors built onto the imaging sensor, faster IPU and upgraded motors. The RX1 has just the contrast detect AF, the RX1R ii has 399 phase detect points, and that is a physical, not software, difference between the two cameras. Phase detect is faster than contrast detect, hence why the new one has hybrid AF (phase detect for speed, contrast detect for pinpointing)
Great review
great video !
Great video. Was the video shot hand held? :)
+Jordy Kroon 16:36.
I don't know, this camera seems so boring. Wasn't it rumored to have a curved sensor? Guess it was too expensive for Sony to produce?
Looking forward to your Fuji X70 review.
Perfect camera! :)
Thanks for the detailed review. Q wins
The battery that this camera uses IS a plus if you also have an RX100 camera as it uses the same battery. Get over it. The batteries are small and light weight. Buy a couple more and carry them with you. The small battery keeps the size and weight down on BOTH of these cameras. I have yet to use more than 2 batteries on either camera on any walkabout. BFD.
I personally think that if have 2 reviews that are not realted to each other you should split them up into 2 serperate videos.
+TheCoon I used the Jockey to shoot this review, so the entire episode is really a Jockey test as well. Hence the inclusion.
Jordan @ TCSTV
+TheCameraStoreTV Hey Jordan! Hope this isn't too naive a question but how did you handle focus with that rig?
+TheCameraStoreTV Ok thx didn't realize that :)
+James R I used wide lens (Batis 25mm F2) and just kept Chris in my hyper focal distance. The great thing about the A7S II is I can boost the ISO and stop down. For close focus, my fabulous assistant Kaitlyn adjusted focus for me before rolling.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Hi, near the 12 mins mark, the scene outside the store. that's with GH4? and what lens was mounted on it? Thanks.
+D. Lo That was also shot with the A7S II with a Loxia 35mm.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Hello bro just want to ask a favor from you if it is ok i just want to know the settings on your rx100 iv can you share it with me please...thank you and more power
I am in the market for neither camera but for me the color and brightness of the Leica Q did seem quite a bit in front of the Sony. Good be just the samples chosen but there's always the question of is it worth the extra grand or more for the Leica, and that is a choice to make for those in the market for it. Great video guys as usual
ONCE you leave this cameras 35mm mode you lose the reason to buy this camera.......Use the zoom ( clear view/digital zoom) and lose the cameras attraction.....just buy a quality 35mm lens for your Dslr, much cheaper....You nailed this camera pretty much, great job.....
Sony has to change their less than optimal battery strategy - way too small batteries they are using. An A7Rii with a 28F2 is so much better of a solution than this camera - even and A7Rii with a metabones IV T with a 40mmF2.8 Canon Pancake (I use both of these setups). Another great review. I was thinking about this camera because of the Leaf Shutter but to many other downsides (no IBIS, battery, handling).
Why didn't Canon announce anything at CES?
+crxracer805 Hopefully preparing all the good stuff to wow us at NAB and Photokina.
Jordan @ TCSTV
How would the Sony RX1R II compare to the Fujifilm X100T? Which would you guys prefer?
+Jorgenfelt The RX1R II is a better camera in every way except for JPEGs and the hybrid viewfinder (if you like it). However, it's a hell of a lot more expensive, so make sure you really want the best tiny full frame camera with a 35mm lens on the market.
Jordan @ TCSTV
What happened to that Sony FS5 review?
+Derek Wong We've pushed it back until we have the upcoming 1.2 firmware. No point in releasing a video that will suddenly be obsolete.
Jordan @ TCSTV
For the money asked the lens seems relatively poor. Is it able to resolve enough for the 42m pixel sensor ? Picture wise the rx1r and this one seems almost identical.
did rx1rii got built in nd filter?
cool review but is Kaitlin single
+Igano Kabamaru Sell yourself Igano!
+TheCameraStoreTV combining my income & Bill gates together we make roughly 11 billion a year
Finally!!!
I liked the museum setting. Elegant video and nice review.
Why are you talking about Lica? Nobody cares about Lica.
excellent, Chris! that battery is so pathetic though. honestly I have great success shooting my eos m cameras. smaller and superb glass. canon 22mm. doesn't get enough credit. tons of videos on my channel of it. but for low light I treasure my powerful 6D!
lol
+DigitalPatriot, well as long as you shot 24 at 1080p or 60 at 720p in 2016 you're all set! Congrats!
+DigitalPatriot The M is really good with strobes too. The thing is, if sony made the M, they would have gone nowhere and the Cannonites would have something to really make fun of. I read too much canonrumors but man, you guys are full of it sometimes. Imagine fuji, sony or the m43 makers pushing mirrorless with the same capabilities as any of the M's and they would be out of business.
+DigitalPatriot I know the EOS M gets a lot of crap, and for me it comes down to the AF being slow, and the cost being high. The new M3 improved things quite a bit but its still too much for what you get. I will say though that the 22mm is a sweet lens and Canon always have a great look to their photos. I think what upsets me most is just Canons unwillingness to really enter the interchangeable lens mirrorless market and kick some ass but at least the new G cameras are rocking it pretty well.
Chris @ TCS TV
Did you guys use a stabilizer for A7S ii?
Quite often. You can see one in our RX1R II review. The stabilizer helps a huge amount with static and panning shots, but when moving with the camera, I like to use a Beholder DS1 stabilizer.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Okay I didn't watch this video entirely. Thank you for telling me :)
and i still saving for the A7...Mk I...2nd
Like for the Maori dude at 1:52 :)
I see the tag on the tripod. Do you borrow stuff from the store? Lol
+Rediscover Film All the time! Its free and if we break it which you've seen us do many times on this channel we can pass the blame. The joys of shooting with absolutely no production budget.
Chris @ TCSTV
+chris haha, awesome!
I feel nervous for Jordan ;)
+Pollux Chung Someone should.
Jordan @ TCSTV
All that 28mm FOV talk...you need to review the Fuji X70. 😉
+Rediscover Film Looking into it!

HAHAHA... omg that comment on instagram.. Win!
I usually de-saturate the magenta but keep and someitmes accentuate the cyan aberration which i really enjoy
Thought the museum was a bad call for the review. But still interesting nonetheless
+Greg P It was a warm location Greg. Very warm...
Chris @TCSTV
pointless review for pros. perfect for consumer. on field review like the one from the Q will be definitely most appreciated. digital zoom function, auto focus test, auto focus point selection, iso performance at night with bad or mixt lighting and so on.
Can the lenses be replaced? Why not go for the Sony a7R II?
As for the Leica Q, its price needs to come down by about $3500
The RX1R II, needs to have around $2500 taken off of its price.
You're asking for the RX1R II to be $800? Lol, maybe in 5 years.
other than being slightly smaller than the A7r ll, I don't see any advantage to the rx1rll, but I see many advantages to getting the A7r ll over the rx1rll, or am I missing something, personally I won't by any Sony camera until they put a touch screen on them, and hopefully fully articulating
+photographerjonathan Listen guys, you need to realize the 35mm F2.0 lens on the RX1 is probably a $1,000 for the lens alone and its perfectly matched to the RX1. If you are strictly looking for a 35mm option in an extremely compact form then the A7r ll is still going to be more expensive, larger and not as good in IQ. The A7r ll is $3200 for the body and another $800 for a F2.8 lens. Doesn't mean the RX1 is a better option but they do have differences.
That is missing the point, Jonathan. An RX1R ii is an A7Rii in a small form factor and with a PREMIUM quality (not a crappy one) 35mm lens engineered to match the sensor to the focal plane, and that means no compromises on IQ. I ditched my DSLR gear to get this as I grew sick of carrying around kilos of gear and put me off shooting. Now, with this, all I want to do is shoot... And as I love the 35mm aspect ration, it was perfect for me. For all my "zoomy stuff" I use a Nikon 1 V3 which - again - small form factor, but caters just fine for the zoom needs I have
OMG about time sony
we are waiting for test review Nikon d500 guys
+jambo kalo As soon as they get us a production unit, we're on it. I've shot with a pre-production unit, and have started forming opinions...
Jordan @ TCSTV
Who has Best Bokeh-Q or RX1R2?
+Cody Robinson I actually found the RX1R2 to have fairly poor out of focus rendition. Weird shaped bokeh and of course the CA we pointed out were disappointing but otherwise the image quality is excellent. The Leica Q wins.
Chris @ TCSTV
leica Q has among the best bokeh of any lens, period
Nice One
Haha, thats what you call a lot of CA? Damn, my standards are low :(. Great review though. Thanx
I like your reviews, humor ect. Thanks! :-) I would like to see you upscale your HD footage to 4K for RUclips, since choosing 4K viewing, even on 1080p or 1440p looks better. Another Canadian RUclipsr, Linus Sebastian, has a video about it here. ruclips.net/video/3NFmpJNvd4k/видео.html . You probably know a lot more about this but there might be somerhing there.
+Gert Sterner If a camera can shoot 4K video, we upload the episode in 4K. Stay tuned for our FS5, C300 II, Nikon D500 and Nikon D5 reviews, which will all be 4K.
Jordan @ TCSTV
