AlphaDeltaXray They’ve recreated it in various tv shows and movies but only in scenes and episodes. There really is no way to recreate it without it just being the same movie.
Knock on wood! I hope they never do. This is the one movie no one should EVER mess with. I don't mind parody's or different versions of it in shows, cartoons, anime, ect. but yeah I hope Hollywood NEVER touches this movie.
Kekistani nationalist I think their struggles are relative to their past experiences. Each of them grew up in different home lives. Like how everyone's worst experience of their lives vary, but they couldn't imagine anything worse. I think that's what Bender is realising in this scene.
My assessment on these teens are -Brian and Andrew’s parents are both overachievers. It seems that they’re both achieving what they did not have through their children (especially in Andrew’s case) -Claire’s parents appear to be loving, but they buy her love and have conflicting parenting styles (if mom says no, her father says yes). It seems that her parents compete for her love as well -Allison’s ignore her (while they don’t say why, but my guess is they’re either workaholics, narcissistic, mentally ill, or substance abusers) -Bender’s parents are physically and emotionally abusive, from a low income background or substance abusers. His father seems to have misogynistic views as he beats his wife for so much as agreeing with him and orders her around.
Kacey McKenzie The people you judge for being different actually have a lot more to them and may be more alike to you than you think. At least that's the moral I got from it
Apparently John Hughes has licensed for this film to never be remade and I’m very thankful. No remake would capture the same spirit, energy and vibe that Hughes had done for this film. One of the greatest movies of all time.
To be honest it kinda is but it is a bit sad that her parents didn’t question whether she ACTUALLY had to be there or not 😅 I used to think having parents that were dismissive of your existence was fine until this movie 😅🥲
It’s wild when I realize I used to do that back in the 11th grade before I saw this movie. I’d go to detention after school when I didn’t even have it just because I was bored and wanted to be around people.
This movie depicts teenagers so well. They don't run to help people ing different social groups. They don't instantly click and become friends. They make jokes, they lie, they share interests, they feel so many raw emotions at random times and it all feels natural
We had real friends in Highschool in the 80's. We never faked liking someone. We always had each others back and always stood up for each other in times of trouble. If one of us were going to go down, we would all go down. We stood up in defense and got each other out of it! That doesn't happen now. I'm sorry for fake people that think we're stupid. God Bless the 50 plus. We had our shit goin' on. Real friendship doesn't exist anymore.
I think we all do. Over the years, I've always imagined different scenarios, and read fanfictions of it. Some times I imagine they still talk to each other like a simple hey in the halls or little silent greets like a nod. Other times I see Clare only talking to Andy while Brian is friends with Allison, Bender and Andrew (secretly). Clare being secret lovers with Bender. Bender openly talking to Clare and Andy just to see what happens. There have even been times when I imagine everything went back to normal as if nothing happened (even if I refuse to believe that and think they should be friends). The one couple I've always held out hope for was Andy and Allison. I always believed somehow, some way, they'd stay together, whether it be in secret or not.
My head canon says John's a bot of an outcast but friends. He dates Claire. Andy dates Allison. Brian is friends with all. I see Brian & Andy being the closest.
I felt so bad for him cuz he reminded me of a friend I had in high school who would literally cry and freak out if he got an F on anything, or even a freakin B. His mom was a total hard ass. Even the teachers didn’t like her cuz she would give them hell too. Poor guy.
My heart dropped to my feet when Allison said "I don't have any friends." I wanna walk through the screen and hug her. Especially on the part where they all arrive for detention and when she gets out of the car she stands there for a bit, as well as the driver/car, but when she goes to say goodbye the driver takes off.
I love how Claire tells Andrew that he would make fun of Brian behind his back with his friends on Monday-Brian looks like he’s about to cry (which probably implies that he’s teased and bullied a lot). But when Andrew says ‘no way’, Brian relaxes and looks surprised by this answer.
It seemed to me that the way Andrew said 'No Way'' while he looked away seemed to indicate a lie to me. It was a submissive response both in tone and body language. Andrew wants to be defiant to his friends but I think he realises that he will cave into peer pressure like Claire will unfortunately. Even though she is called a b***h, Claire is at least upfront with her stance.
The number one lesson I learned from this scene and from this movie? Be yourself and don't concern yourself with what other people think. You will live a much happier and pleasing life, I guarantee it.
I am myself and don't concern myself with what other people think.....I am a loner and have been given so much abuse for my freethinking, hasn't been too pleasing or happy, still don't regret it though cause I cant stand people only thing worse that being alone is being with humans.
aran125 It’s almost impossible high school to do that and remain sane. You don’t have your own life in school. You’re pressured by EVERYONE and you’re stuck in groups, you can’t just go all day and do your own thing. Everyone excuses the negative stuff as just being young. I’m so glad I graduated, I finally got to be myself without pressure.
I felt like Andy was the anchor of this entire sequence, his speech was the BEST moment of the entire film, but just the way he encouraged Brian to let out why he had the gun in his locker and stood up for Claire against Bender. The way he and Allison connected with each other. I know everyone loves Bender, but Andy was low-key the heart of this film for me.
drlee2 I lovedddddd anddddddy he’s so precious. Him and Brian are my favorites, but Brian’s just my favorite cause I’m a bitch for Anthony Michael y’all oup
"I don't think the kind of friends I'd have would mind." I think that is the best line of this whole exchange. When a person issues a response like that without a second thought, it is a glimpse into their true character. As the saying goes, you are a reflection of the company you keep.
Bender lost it when Allison was insulted. Bender treats Allison like a little sister, probably since they have a similar home situation, and this has been displayed throughout the whole movie.
Both he and Allison are both outcasts that nobody notices at school, Brian (while still an outcast) is still noticed but only bullied as a "nerd" whereas Bender and Allison could go all day without anyone speaking to them.
"You don't KNOW any of my friends, you don't LOOK at any of my friends, and you'd never condescend to SPEAK to any of my friends!" Most powerful lines in the film. You can feel that anger that's been bottled up towards Claire and other people like her, and how cutting it is when it finally comes out. Sad to say but I was most like Bender in HS (up until about the middle of junior year) and I can totally relate to that. Powerful stuff. Amazing movie.
I always heard that line as a "Dafuq you say about my friends?! Don't you dare talk to them!" Seeing it written down, its finally clicked. Its not a command regarding his friends, its an accusation that Claire thinks of his friends as dirt and shits on them to remain "popular" in the eyes of her friends.
Except Bender is every bit as tribal as Claire, he just doesn't want to admit it. Claire was spot on when she said he'd cut her up to his friends. He doesn't know anyone in Claire's circle and doesn't care to, yet he still wants to feel superior to her.
it's like he thinks he has a bad life, but never thought of going as far to kill himself and someone as smart as brian was willing to end of life was probably a big shock
3:51 John realizes that his assumption about Brian's home life was completely wrong. 4:49 John also realizes that while he may live in an abusive household, not even he considered putting a bullet in his head. IMO Brian's backstory is the most tragic of the group.
I think more than the others, Bender and Claire learned to stop making assumptions towards people, and it happened right at the moment Brian admits his suicidal ideations, both John and Claire assumed Brian had no real pressures or problems in life and had a perfect home with parents who adore him, not realizing he’s like Andy x11, that kind of pressure from family can make you feel like you HAVE to live up to their expectations, otherwise they will no longer love or need you so there’s only one way out if one mistake is made…
@@paulmacartney8266thats very insensitive You do NOT know what goes on behind closed doors or whats racing through someones head NEVER assume its a purely selfish act
@@ohwell94 No. I'm afraid it is selfish. No matter how hard it difficult Ur problems r, suicide is never the answer. It still is selfish, to leave it own family & friends heartbroken 💔 after taking Ur own life. IIt only makes things worse. I told my father this. Not that a strong man like *him* would ever dream of committing suicide. No, suicide is a selfish act. It doesn't matter how hard ur problems may be, that's no excuse to kill Urself & hurt the people that love u. This is only a film with a character who does have problems but refrains from killing himself which is the best decision a person can make.
I love how Bender defends his friends and for some reason I fell like they would be the nicest, most genuine, and trustworthy people and I have no idea why
This whole scene plus the rest of their stories was improvised aka they all made it up because the directors didn't make a believable script they believed the audience wouldn't find it interesting so they made the actors just make everything up and go with each others stories, When she said she has nothing better to do she couldn't actually think of something but it still made a great part that made the actors And possibly viewers laugh. Honestly it is an amazing scene put together with such POWERFUL words!
I don't see how he could've pulled the trunk so the light would go on. Maybe the reason for the F was that is wasn't an easy course as he thought it would be and the shop teacher didn't like projects that didn't work.
I was 14 when this came out. I was choked up when brian was telling his story, then I laughed with tears when he said it was a flare gun. I just watched it again, same emotions. God bless you John Hughes, you made my teen years in the 80's so relate-able, I share your movies with my kids even today
The exchange of "I hate you!" "Yeah? Good!" between Bender and Claire is maybe one of the most intense moments in the movie because that single 5 word exchange says so much for both characters. Claire, afraid that everything he said is true, afraid that she's just as vapid and uncaring as the rest of the cliche rich kids when she wishes and wants to be more than that, better than that. And Bender who's response of "Good" continues to show how he covers up his emotions. With two words he essentially is saying 'You hate me? What do I care, everybody else does, why not you?' when in reality, it effects him more than he'll ever say.
@@bicyclist2 Mm, I don't know if fully agree with that. He's certainly jealous of her home life, as it's not an abusive one (not physically at least) but you can tell the few things he has he at least cherishes. His furious defense of his friends to Claire in this scene, and the obvious offense he takes when Brian dismisses shop class as an, anyone can do it kind of thing, prove that.
Bender's friends accept him, Claire is very selective of who she accepts let alone interacts with, she's "high status" in her mind, Bender is good with that and so he says what he says because it validates his opinion of her while her opinion of him and his friends might be wrong. IMO Edit: typos
Flare gun, by law, a flare gun isn't put under standard firearm laws but you're right to be shocked as in today's gay ass world, you'd have SWAT up your ass if this happened.
Yeah, sadly some parts of this movie do show it's age (the Sushi joke, I m betting teens watching for the first time today don't get why they would react like that) but it is still a great movie.
I think the Sushi Joke still can roll around, I know people who won't eat it because it's raw. I am just glad the suppose remake got shot down. Though I wouldn't be surprised.
She got called a bitch cause she said a bitchy thing. Sure she was honest but she also admitted she’d ignore and forget the people she’s grown close to in this movie. Honest, but a bitchy thing to do.
"Why don't you take Allison to one of your heavy metal vomit parties!" I love how Allison giggles in shyness when she says that. She's fucking adorable in this.
There was a hint of sadness in that giggle and smile, like she’s trying to hide the pain of being invisible, but she can’t. She conveyed such a beautiful set of emotions in the span of just a few frames, she is a brilliant actress
one of the greatest scenes in film history reasons why: 1. it reveals the internal hardships of kids and how it effects their being 2. it sheds light on the social constructs of high school and the pressure each kid experiences bc of this 3. it doesn’t cloud over any taboo subjects 4. u get to see every kids perspective which helps u understand each character better and why they act the way they do which can help u have insight into your own life and the people in it. 5. it highlights that no matter how popular or unpopular u are u can still share similar issues with other people
Andrew: "I taped Larry Lester's buns together" Brian: "That was you??" I always thought that part was brilliant. Brian, the obvious dork. Then Andrew mentions some random dork that he bullied and Brian ends up knowing him. Just seems very realistic.
tonifashola.x Larry wasn’t a jock. He was a weak kid who Andy picked on to be cool in front of his jock friends. That’s the point of his story. He only did it to appease his shitty father who pushes him “to win.” When he saw the physical and emotional damage he had caused the kid, it wrecked him.
The way Brian reacts when he learns what Andrew did seems to imply that Brian and Larry were friends, as he reacts with an undertone of significant disapproval having just learned who it was that hurt his compatriot before learning why.
The pressures of being young is hard...and adults love to push many teenagers feelings aside and don't acknowledge it cause they think "oh they don't know any better"... there's so much put on our shoulders especially in highschool and honestly we are all looking for people to just listen and just walk in someone else's shoes for once.
M Ciddy you don’t understand what it’s like to be a teenager unless you are a teenager. It’s an awful experience that’s memory fades as you get older. Adults often forget how awful being a teenager is. Once those overwhelming emotions and imbalanced hormones of experiencing things for the first time, once all those things are gone, they’re gone for good. Unless your an adult affected by depression you’re never gonna understand how awful it is. And I think we can all agree being a teen today is way more difficult than it was in the 80s-90s. Teens today have to deal with social media.
i'm sorry, i cried too, dealing with parents that think so high of you and when i got to a point where i couldn't do basic things that i considered stupid people, could do. that just makes me as stupid as them in their world. you feel trapped to a certain life that you are bound to perceive. Failing classes junior year due to abuse from my brother. it wrecked me, my parents threatened to kick me out for my slipping grades,........ i attempted suicide in the hospital one night when i was threatened with a knife by my brother after he fought me,.......... realizing the life i was concentrated on just left me to zone out out of the world, i thought everybody and everything was just a piece of shit.................... well i hated the constant influences by others, i just thought fuck it im a do what I want to do, im not gonna live up to others satisfaction because simply i don't need to, never settle for a perfect life because it can be easily manipulated and destroyed, leaving you to think everything is done and you have to start over, not necessarily. i laughed at myself just like Brian did........ everybody has problems you just gotta be mature about it and think what exactly is your best option
The sad thing is that Allison thinks they are laughing at her and she is still so happy because of it. It was some time since I've seen the movie but to me it shows just how alone she was. She didn't even have people pay enough attention to her to actually laugh at her like that.
4:39 The look on Bender's face as Brian speaks. It's one of so many beautiful moments in this classic film. It's the look of a young man thinking "Hey, maybe we're not so different after all." This movie will never get old, even though I have.
jennifer k. I agree when I was in high school I almost did the same exact thing but I got help Brian needed help because his parents were putting too much on his shoulders and the way they look at him with pity
Sound Logic idk man, the mind is a powerful thing. You can give starving kids food and nurture them back to health, but the mind is always there. As much help as you get it'll still be rotten.
Sound Logic . Lol that's what I would think too. But I was also like Brain a bit. Of course u don't think your in a worst situation. But the academic pressure gets to you and the idea that your not meeting up to a certain expectation makes you feel your failing as a person. Not only that but how it'll look to colleges, $ u can get for academic achievements + other factors. It starts to become a psychological problem when parents emphasize you're not good enough if you don't achieve their standards. And you blame it on yourself. Hence why brain toke a gun. It's similar to Bender actually, just opposite.
the look on Bender's face at 4:52...that's not just a look of pity or sympathy. that's the look of understanding and realization. From someone who's tried before. and it breaks my heart a million times over just to think about Bender coming to the realization that the darkness he thought was exclusively his is something even the sweet, naive, nerdy kid is victim to. this is the moment when i start crying and don't stop
Bender takes pity on Brian. No one cares if he does well at school at all. Brian has pressure on him at home in a much different way it crushes him that he treated him so badly.
....it was a flare gun. He intended to use it on himself because of his grade being compromised. It's funny because his stupidity in choice of death just makes the bad grade make sense, therefore the bad grade kept him around ultimately.
I'm Asian and I felt the pain Brain had. My parents and many of my relatives impose this pressure on us, children and when I was shamed for not graduating with honors, I wanted to die and also when I kept failing, I also wanted to die and give up because I felt like going nowhere. Kudos to his acting. Thank you for shedding so much light to this as early as 1985
I just noticed something. The whole clip, each shot is a close up of either the person speaking, or another's reaction. Makes them feel isolated from the group. And at the end, once they've learn a lot more about each other and had their therapy, its a shot of them all together, like they are a group of friends.
Claire is absolutely right though... there's probably no way they remained friends. I had a very similar experience like this with a group of kids back in high school and once the event was over, two of them kind of remained friends (but they already were kind of friends) and the rest of us just parted ways. Once school started again I tried to reach out a couple times (like a small "hey" in the hallway or class) but was just treated as a stranger and ignored - I didn't really push it any further. I mean the weekend was a pretty big experience for me (growth wise - I had like no friends) but the hurt afterwards was awful, I almost wish I had never even been part of the project. Though, in the end, high school doesn't matter, you kind of forget about everything once its over and you get to restart.
BucketDwarf Certain things you always remember. It’s like a sport, and your classmates are your teammates. When you’re on a sports team, you never remember the games you won and lost, the times you achieved, or whatever, it’s the bus rides to games where everyone’s laughing, and the bonding events and the fun wines during practices that you remember. It’s the same with school. You don’t remember the grades you got and classes to passed or failed. You remember the times you walked down the hallways and someone made everyone laugh, and the times someone steals a teacher’s clock (actually happened) or the funny slurs on the announcements. That’s what you remember about school and sports
Yup thats why i never cared about what happened at high school of the people there. None of that sh*t matters now. Not a single thing. So to the jocks and pretty popular people and what not. They get out of high school and realize guess what NO ONE CARES.they arent mr or miss special anymore.
I think Claire is the only one that would go back to ignoring them. She's one of the popular kids and wouldn't want to jeopardize that. She'll regret it later though when she finally realizes that the popular kids aren't really her friends. It's just a clique.
No I think they were friends, because Claire seemed like she wanted to break free from being one of the "popular" kids. And the bond they developed is different then just some random kids that had detention together. They grew a brotherhood together.
Andy’s laughing is what made the scene. Brian picked a flare gun of all weapons. The most ridiculous weapon of choice, in addition to having a fake ID just to vote.
Emilio absolutely killed it in his monologue. Such a raw scene and so rare to see a “bully” character reflecting on their actions and being truly ashamed. Acknowledging the torment he inflicted on a kid for absolutely no reason and coming to terms with why he’s the way he is on the spot. You can see pure catharsis as he lays it all out
As much as I'm curious to know what actually did happen Monday, a part of me doesn't want to know, reasons being. One, we don't have to worry about a sequel that would most likely become a right fuck up like most franchises that get milked dry of ideas, and two, being such a good movie it gives us that unanswered ending approach where us as the viewers, can use our imagination or assumptions to what did happen, depending on the quality of the ending, it's sometimes a preference.
The ending song always makes me cry because it feels like it’s the perspective of one of the kids and they seem genuinely sad that the have been “forgotten” you know what I mean?
In a weird way Claire was absolutely right when she says on Monday none of them would be friends... they may acknowledge each other in passing but that's about it...even tho 2 of the couples hooked up at the end... but in honesty Claire would dump Bender by Monday 😀
Stalia4ever Shamelesslyafangirl Agreed, they seemed to have the most healthy relationship. I can see Andy and Brian possibly talking, but I don't think it could grow into a friendship
Y’know, after Andrew’s confession about Larry and how much he regrets it, I believe him when he disagrees with Claire’s assumption that he would cut Brian up towards his friends. At the height of his dad’s influence on him, you can tell that he is just begging to break into his own person, and Claire at this point, doesn’t believe that’s possible because of her own clique and experience. It’s a really subtle way of separating two similar types of people and I love it so much. Such a brilliant scene
It's actually surprising that these characters have talents which fall beyond the purview of their stereotypes. Andrew is incredibly perceptive when it comes to emotion, Claire is surprisingly rational and objective, and Bender can be astonishingly articulate for someone who doesn't do well at school. I'm not sure what Brian and Allison's "hidden talents" are, but if someone has an idea please tell me in a reply.
You don't have to be good at school to be astonishingly articulate. Bender could have dyslexia. As a result he can't read well so he gets poor grades. This his crappy home life leads him to repress his emotions and to lash out at authority figures, like teachers. School is more about regimentation and following the rules and way less about true intellectual exploration. I did very well in high school so I know--if you follow the rules to a T, regurgitate info well and be pleasant to teachers, you get high grades.
Allison is truely happy within herself. And will befriend anyone who will be kind to her. If it's honest. She's not stupid. Brian just wants some to love him with the honest love he has for others. He can't bear to hurt others the way he's been hurt.
I think for allison it would be that she’s surprisingly optimistic despite her being the recluse. She has no friends bur still tells brian she would stay friends with him and is open to trying on a whole new look with claire who had a complete different style. With brian its got to be his acceptance for others and how full of love he is. Not only is he the one character that they all get along with (even bender he just hides it) but he also shows his emotions in the crying scene. All he wants is for the rest if them to accept him they way he would accept them in front of his peers. This movie really showed how complex each characters backstory was i just wish they focussed more on brians home life. They only really showed what bender thought brians home life was like.
Yeah, the thing is that just because you are a punk like Bender, it doesn't mean you can't have some street smarts. Bender chooses not to care about school, but I'm sure he could if he wanted to.
I love bender in this whole scene like Judd Nelson did a great job of making him more than a criminal. He constantly watching everyone else and analyzing them as Bender
Jenna Ramos Thats what Sagittarians do. He was honestly the rebel in the group astrologically. The Princess Aquarius, The Goth Aquarius, The Techie Leo, The Athlete Taurus. Those are all fixed signs but The Rebel is a Sagittarian thats Mutable.
Could see if Bender's friends started picking on Brian, Bender would have spoken up and said to "knock it off" doubt he would have done much more for him. Bender would not have been the same level of snob as Clair no, but he has friends to keep too and in some ways his would be more important because they are his escape from his shitty life. I figure Andrew and Allison never lasted long. She is not going to get a daily makeover and eventually would revert to her old ways and Andrew would cave to pressure. No way that jock's friend would not have told him to ditch her fast. Truth is I could see Andrew and Clair as friends and Brian and Allison and friends possibly (although even that is unlikely) but I think most of them never gave more than a casual nod in the hall after leaving that detention. Claire had it right, the truth was the others didn't want to admit it. Even Brian would have likely had his friend make fun of Andrew if they tried to make a go. Yeah he wouldn't have had as much to lose or as likely to lose him, but sure "what's with being friends with the meathead who bulled us?" would come up.
I think the most poignant part of this entire scene is that Claire is absolutely correct in the fact that Bender would be just as embarrassed to be associated with Claire as she was with him, this wasn’t just a story about the popular kids, this is genuine high school life.
I think it’s society period. High school is a microcosm of adult life, and these teen movies never give high schoolers enough credit! Because I think these things are even truer for adults. I know far too many very grown people that care far too much what others think & would say about their lives. In school everyone was still trying to figure things out, I hung out with people I’d be hard pressed to be around as an adult and it wasn’t uncommon to see various social groups explore a bit.
I think it points to a similarity between the characters. Bender and Claire are both very much self-aware. One being at the bottom of the hierarchy, and the other being at the top of it. It's only here that Claire can be honest and show how much she doesn't like it, and that she is aware of what is happening, that as much as it makes you hate her - it makes you realize that she is in her own hell. In the end, Bender rubs off on everyone - in a sort of - just say fuck it - kind of way. When you see Claire and Bender both acknowledge the irony of their potential relationship - even in the end - you get a feeling that she is going to be a better person because of him confronting her. When she gives him the diamond, it's a bit of the princess giving the pauper a token of her love. It may not be real, but it was in that moment. That being said. I always feel like when Bender walks across the football field, fist in air - it's the audience getting a chance to see that Bender knew he was the winner the entire time.
I saw it myself. I wasn’t a crowd guy, but hung with the stoners and one day a girl came and joked with one of the ‘heads. They have him shit. Forget he was talking to a beautiful girl but she wasn’t part of their mold. High school is fucked. 😞
I always saw a certain darkness in this scene, especially Claire’s part in the beginning. What she says is absolutely true, and even though they all go through this intense bonding session it will never be strong enough to break social and peer pressures. The sadness is in knowing that they could be friends, but won’t be
I think that was only brought up to confront that notion and the suggestion is that it’s ultimately *their* choice. Andrew is especially firm in his stance especially after the guilt he feels for what he did to Larry. Why would he repeat anything similar with Brian? Bender likely doesn’t have many friends or very many good ones given his defensive response when asked about them. He likely doesn’t want to admit this, although he does stand up for Brian and berate Claire for her selfishness. Everyone else in the circle seems to want to maintain friendship except for Claire initially, but… I’d like to think that Claire giving Bender her earring and thusly, Bender accepting Claire’s earring and wearing it signifies that the entire group chose to change and become friends.
I actually agree with Bender here. As a loner through school, I feel the same way. The rich kids are always the jerks. If I was to show up to one of their parties, they would laugh their asses off until I left, because I wasnt one of them. Us loners know how crappy it is to do to someone, which is why we choose our friends very carefully. Our friends are just like us: loners. That way we can trust each other, but recoginze there is a barrier. We dont like to go outside of our groups because that risks exposure to pain. He also right in saying that the rich kids condecend to speak to us. They always talk to us like they know better, but they are no different. They have just as many problems and issues to deal with, the difference they use their money to mask it. It doesnt fool anyone.
Im considered a rich kid, and I’m also the loner I don’t like going to parties I try to avoid people and one of the reasons why is because whenever someone/anyone needs something I give it to them without hesitation because I know that if I were in their shoes I would like for someone to help me but at the end of the day everyone (they aren’t wealthy they are just average btw) stabbed me in the back and made fun of me, I was never gonna fit into their social group, I always used to envy them they never really accepted me so I just dealt with it and became an outsider but just because those certain people did that to me I’m not going to assume that everyone from their background is like that. And like u said we have problems too , people expect too much just because ur from a certain group. I’ve been poor when my parents abandoned me when I was 5 in a different country, I’ve been the princess when I was 11, I’ve been the criminal when I was 14, I’ve been the brain and the outsider, sometimes I’m the athlete I think that at certain times you should be one of them so u can open yourself to new perspectives and understand the world more.
Hypocrisy is hypocrisy, no matter the source. Don't prejudge people. It's rude and cruel and unfair. You don't know their story or their background. That's the whole point of this movie. Everyone has struggles, and given the right circumstances, we can learn to understand one another and respect each other.
Stelena Klauroline Bellarke i come from a poor background and i also gave my all emotionally and financially and at the end got betrayed left and right. so i feel u its not bout the money its bout character.
the fact that even bender went quiet when brian mentioned having some sort of gun in his locker speaks volumes. he realized that other people that aren’t like him can go through shit that’s just as bad.
"You just stick to what you know... shopping, nail polish, your father's BMW, and your poor, rich, drunk mother in the Caribbean." This is one of my favorite scenes from the film.
He is the one who sort of knocks over the walls and gets them to talk in the first place. And I did feel for him even though he was the kind of punk I stayed clear of in hs.
It’s almost surreal how close to a real emotionally charged conversation this actually is. They’re not just acting here, but they’re really feeling something. The tears coming from the actors are clearly real. No eye drops going on in the make-up department.
4:26 for some reason I get chills when Brian sits up with his head down. The entire time he is viewed as this nerdy PERFECT child... until others begin to realize he has some dark secrets and depression. He was on the verge of becoming either suicidal, or a school shooter. This bond and friendship he shares with The Breakfast Club is saving him.
I saw this for the first time on DVD and the disc skipped over Brian's gun story. I just shrugged and played the next scene thinking it probably wasn't anything hugely important. Oh my how wrong I was.
These kids were better actors than most grown ups these days, I freaking love this movie, they really have the ability to make you laugh and cry, what a roller coaster of emotions...
ALLISON IS SOOO BLOODY ADORABLE!! 😍😍 “You want to know what I did to get in here? Nothing. I didn’t have anything better to do.” 😂 And the way Andy smiles at her... 😍😍😍
@@sha11235 that’s something that always puzzled me…if Vernon didn’t know who she was based on his itinerary for the session…why didn’t he kick her out or call her parents to confirm her punishment? I guess it’s to highlight how much he hates kids despite his job? 😅
My favorite part of this scene is how you see Bender REALLY begins to understand Brian and you can see the understanding in his face when Brian's telling his story.
I agree, to me it would’ve made more sense. There wasn’t any visible connection between Andrew and Allison at the beginning, I don’t get how they should have ended up together, he didn’t really notice her until she had that damn makeover, if anything Clair and Andrew together made more sense. And Bender, I mean he’s my favorite character but he’s too much of a bad boy and he really kind of treated Claire like shit so I don’t get why she liked him.
You know what? I think Andy seems to show an interest in Claire right at the beginning, by sitting near her, protecting her against Bender's shit, and when he is ordered to get the Cokes, he points to Claire, hoping Vernon will pick her so he can spend some private time getting to know her.
Wonderful how teens from so different backgrounds can eventually come together and change and then unite !!! I wonder on the first day of school after detention whether they are still friends - I hope they did
Each character brings something to this movie, but Ally Sheedy doesn't get enough recognition for the raw emotion she portrayed throughout. At 1:27 and 5:50, her anguish about her place in the world is so real. She doesn't want to put on a "face" to impress anyone and just wants to be accepted for who she is. You can feel how real she is when she says, "When you grow up, your heart dies". When Bender retorted, "Who cares?", the look in her eyes is so genuine when she say. "I care." Really fabulous acting!
As a 16 year old I can relate with Claire because when I was a freshman we did this thing called freshman retreat and were put into groups for 2 days, all of us from different groups and we got along very well and the end I felt very close to these people but when it was over on Saturday and went back to school on Monday none of us acknowledged each other cause all of were from groups that never got along and to this day we never talk to each other all because of the stupid fucking cliques in school.
Clair had it right, some people are shocked but either things have changed a lot these days or they are kidding themselves. When I was in high school one year I was a councilors aid, which had a lot of down time and it was me and 3 other kids (well 4 but one much like Ally Sheedy never talked, no lie) and we spent a lot of time chatting, joking and having a good time. Watch from that you would think we were the best of friends. But we as the cliché goes "came from different worlds" and we never talked to each other outside those doors, other than nods in the hall I don't think any of us ever even exchanged a hello. We just absorbed back into our own social circle. High School was like that.
"Don't you ever talk about my friends! You don't know any my friends, you don't look at any of my friends, and you certainly wouldn't condescend to speak with any of my friends!" I always wondered if any of Bender's friends were in similar situations to him at home, and that was why he defended them so passionately. Obviously he could just be a good friend and maybe I'm reading too much into it but it's what I always felt from this scene
Honestly, it’s true about them not remaining friends. I was a loser at my school. I also happen to go to the same church as a few of the popular kids. We went on a trip as a youth group. Had a great time. I got to know them. They got to know me. We opened up and it felt real. I got back to school, and nothing changed. Their friends still picked on me. They did nothing. This scene is great, because it is real, but it’s really heartbreaking that the only kid that might get treated okay after the film is over is the one who changed to fit in.
I think ot would depend on the people. Claire's type would never friends with you and would talk about you. . Alison type would be your friend. Bender and Andy wouldn't be friendly but wouldn't ignore you or treat you bad. When this movie came out, I liked Allison the most. All these years later still do.
I love how the characters throughout the movie are so inconsistent like how teenagers are, they like each other and then they don’t, they like themselves and then they don’t. And then this conversation starts with each of them being in denial about the horrible aspects of their character, and finally after someone from another group points it out to them, they open up. Like a “this needed to happen so you can grow” kinda conversation. It perfectly represents the benefits of unity regardless of each others’ differences and honesty towards both yourself and other people.
I'm so thankful that they never attempted to remake this. I guess even Hollywood knows their boundaries.
AlphaDeltaXray it could work really well within the hands of the right director.
AlphaDeltaXray They’ve recreated it in various tv shows and movies but only in scenes and episodes. There really is no way to recreate it without it just being the same movie.
No they touched the timeless masterpiece Heathers
Knock on wood! I hope they never do. This is the one movie no one should EVER mess with. I don't mind parody's or different versions of it in shows, cartoons, anime, ect. but yeah I hope Hollywood NEVER touches this movie.
AlphaDeltaXray From my understanding, John Hughes didn't want anyone remaking it in any way.
I love how Brian's confession even seemed to hit Bender.
FantasticMrBox I think with that scene he realized that everyone's parents are cruel in their own way.
Kekistani nationalist I think their struggles are relative to their past experiences. Each of them grew up in different home lives. Like how everyone's worst experience of their lives vary, but they couldn't imagine anything worse. I think that's what Bender is realising in this scene.
GhostPants yeah and actually it hit all of us I’m sometimes in those types of situations (but not as far as bringing a gun to school)
Brian: I'm an idiot because I can't make a lamp?
John: No. You're a genius because you can't make a lamp...
My assessment on these teens are
-Brian and Andrew’s parents are both overachievers. It seems that they’re both achieving what they did not have through their children (especially in Andrew’s case)
-Claire’s parents appear to be loving, but they buy her love and have conflicting parenting styles (if mom says no, her father says yes). It seems that her parents compete for her love as well
-Allison’s ignore her (while they don’t say why, but my guess is they’re either workaholics, narcissistic, mentally ill, or substance abusers)
-Bender’s parents are physically and emotionally abusive, from a low income background or substance abusers. His father seems to have misogynistic views as he beats his wife for so much as agreeing with him and orders her around.
one thing I love about the breakfast club is how it turns into a deep emotional film with a great moral
Yeah I was just thinking that.
Right it’s amazing how John Hughes can make a simple plot idea into something meaningful.
What's the moral tbh...???
When I was younger I wish I had convos like this with friends about God and our dreams
One of the greatest movies of all time.

the fact that allison was there bc she was bored and not bc she had done anything is actually pretty cool
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boredom
To be honest it kinda is but it is a bit sad that her parents didn’t question whether she ACTUALLY had to be there or not 😅 I used to think having parents that were dismissive of your existence was fine until this movie 😅🥲
It’s wild when I realize I used to do that back in the 11th grade before I saw this movie. I’d go to detention after school when I didn’t even have it just because I was bored and wanted to be around people.
She's so cute here ☺️
It’s not cool so much as it is a desperate attempt to get away from home life
This movie depicts teenagers so well.

I have the feeling that even if they did go their separate ways, they never looked at a person the same way again.
sha11235 exactly it was an awakening...they wouldn't be friends but they would never quite look at those peer groups in the same way
I think we all do.
"i can't have an F" THAT BROKE MY HEART I LOVE BRIAN
I felt so bad for him cuz he reminded me of a friend I had in high school who would literally cry and freak out if he got an F on anything, or even a freakin B. His mom was a total hard ass. Even the teachers didn’t like her cuz she would give them hell too. Poor guy.

My heart dropped to my feet when Allison said "I don't have any friends." I wanna walk through the screen and hug her. Especially on the part where they all arrive for detention and when she gets out of the car she stands there for a bit, as well as the driver/car, but when she goes to say goodbye the driver takes off.
Same.

Andrews reaction gives hope to someone who needs it.
Bender didn't think much of it. He thinks that Claire is being a bitch lol 😆
Brian is obviously bullied
Look at the way bender treats him lol
The number one lesson I learned from this scene and from this movie? Be yourself and don't concern yourself with what other people think. You will live a much happier and pleasing life, I guarantee it.
Morpheus little easier said than done in high school.
yup. Everyone has to live their own life. Focusing on others only distracts you from being the best you that you can be.
I am myself and don't concern myself with what other people think.....I am a loner and have been given so much abuse for my freethinking, hasn't been too pleasing or happy, still don't regret it though cause I cant stand people only thing worse that being alone is being with humans.

It’s almost impossible high school to do that and remain sane.
You don’t have your own life in school.
You’re pressured by EVERYONE and you’re stuck in groups, you can’t just go all day and do your own thing. Everyone excuses the negative stuff as just being young.
I’m so glad I graduated, I finally got to be myself without pressure.
I remember how sad I was when Allison said she didn't have any friends. :(
It's just sad. Everyone should have a friend. Well, at least she formed somewhat a friendship with them.
I could totally relate to her unfortunately.
I barely have any friends either but same
:) Ok!
Lily Zerep- She was smart not to have friends especially high school which is nothing but a popularity contest.
I felt like Andy was the anchor of this entire sequence, his speech was the BEST moment of the entire film, but just the way he encouraged Brian to let out why he had the gun in his locker and stood up for Claire against Bender. The way he and Allison connected with each other. I know everyone loves Bender, but Andy was low-key the heart of this film for me.
drlee2 Andy is great

drlee2 I lovedddddd anddddddy he’s so precious. Him and Brian are my favorites, but Brian’s just my favorite cause I’m a bitch for Anthony Michael y’all oup
Emilio estevez was the unofficial leader of the 80s brat pack!
"I don't think the kind of friends I'd have would mind."
I think that is the best line of this whole exchange.
John and Allison were the best characters in the movie
When I first saw this movie I was very surprised that they didn't get together at the end of the movie.
One of the smallest yet best moments in the movie is when Bender tosses Allison the Coke at lunch.

Don't you dare talk to them!"
Seeing it written down, its finally clicked. Its not a command regarding his friends, its an accusation that Claire thinks of his friends as dirt and shits on them to remain "popular" in the eyes of her friends.
K-Blue how were you like him
Except Bender is every bit as tribal as Claire, he just doesn't want to admit it.

Such a POWERFUL scene on the dynamics of peer pressure. My goodness!
Brian getting an F for a non working ceramic elephant lamp was a bit harsh, I always thought he should at least got a C
I don't see how he could've pulled the trunk so the light would go on. Maybe the reason for the F was that is wasn't an easy course as he thought it would be and the shop teacher didn't like projects that didn't work.
There were no participation trophies back in those days.
I got an A for a project that didn’t work so I really think that he should have gotten at least a C

My exact experience ❤
He wants her social status. She has nothing to gain, except that most women are attracted to dangerous and/or confident men.
IMO

4. u get to see every kids perspective which helps u understand each character better and why they act the way they do which can help u have insight into your own life and the people in it.
5. it highlights that no matter how popular or unpopular u are u can still share similar issues with other people

Well didn’t happen in the locker room.So Larry is probs a jock too, just not as strong as the others.
tonifashola.x Larry wasn’t a jock. He was a weak kid who Andy picked on to be cool in front of his jock friends. That’s the point of his story. He only did it to appease his shitty father who pushes him “to win.” When he saw the physical and emotional damage he had caused the kid, it wrecked him.

It starts to become a psychological problem when parents emphasize you're not good enough if you don't achieve their standards. And you blame it on yourself. Hence why brain toke a gun. It's similar to Bender actually, just opposite.
jennifer k. There is life beyond grades and school. Stay strong 💕
the look on Bender's face at 4:52...that's not just a look of pity or sympathy. that's the look of understanding and realization. From someone who's tried before.
and it breaks my heart a million times over just to think about Bender coming to the realization that the darkness he thought was exclusively his is something even the sweet, naive, nerdy kid is victim to. this is the moment when i start crying and don't stop
It's incredible acting. No dialogue from him, just a look----and looking away----and that says it all.
Judd Nelson OWNED in this role
Damn..
Bender takes pity on Brian. No one cares if he does well at school at all. Brian has pressure on him at home in a much different way it crushes him that he treated him so badly.
"Nah it was a flare gun"😂
80s gun in locker = detention. 2018 gun in locker = 24/7 CNN coverage of the lockdown.
Rufus Slothkowski Columbine changed that dynamic.
....it was a flare gun. He intended to use it on himself because of his grade being compromised. It's funny because his stupidity in choice of death just makes the bad grade make sense, therefore the bad grade kept him around ultimately.
Rufus Slothkowski Because after Columbine, school shootings began to get noticed more.
It was a flare gun....
Rufus Slothkowski exactly

Certain things you always remember.

"YOU ARE A BITCH" i love him lmao. this movie should be shown in every high school. one of my fav movies ever.
one day if i have a kids and when they're old enough, i'll show this movie to them

Its amazing
"it was a flare gun" that was one of the funniest lines in the movie
Andy’s laughing is what made the scene. Brian picked a flare gun of all weapons. The most ridiculous weapon of choice, in addition to having a fake ID just to vote.
Emilio absolutely killed it in his monologue. Such a raw scene and so rare to see a “bully” character reflecting on their actions and being truly ashamed. Acknowledging the torment he inflicted on a kid for absolutely no reason and coming to terms with why he’s the way he is on the spot. You can see pure catharsis as he lays it all out
I wonder what did happen on Monday
The movie ended after 92 minutes!
I3INARY_ Yeah
The ending song always makes me cry because it feels like it’s the perspective of one of the kids and they seem genuinely sad that the have been “forgotten” you know what I mean?
Well, at least the couples must been together for some days.
No one can ever replicate this scene. This scene is pretty much timeless.
Amen!
In a weird way Claire was absolutely right when she says on Monday none of them would be friends... they may acknowledge each other in passing but that's about it...even tho 2 of the couples hooked up at the end... but in honesty Claire would dump Bender by Monday 😀
I think Allison and Brian might be friends after, but that's probably it
Monyo ....trouble who me never lol... #teamBrian 👍... he's a badass for having that flair gun in his locker 😋
Monyo ... I was being ironic SILLY... 😎
Nah I think they would've stayed together
Stalia4ever Shamelesslyafangirl Agreed, they seemed to have the most healthy relationship. I can see Andy and Brian possibly talking, but I don't think it could grow into a friendship
how the hell did this movie not get an oscar nomination for original screenplay??? Such good writing.
Probably money and not talent is what the Academy desires most...
It also shoulda gotten nominated for best director & best supporting actress (Ally Sheedy)
That's what I was thinking. It could have gotten a nom for best supporting actor (Paul Gleason).
This whole scene wasn't in the screenplay. believe it or not this was improvised. But yeah the writing outside of this scene is amazing.
Brian was actually the most one in distress and was going to end his life. In a way his story was the most tragic.
How would a capricorn be in that group?
D Logic The real question is: How can you apply astrology to characteristics?

@@nocks617 THANK YOU
I like to think that Andrew and Allison did remain some sort of...lovers in the hiding, I don't know. And Bender protects Brian. Idk.
I agree. I always had hope about those two compared to the others.
I think everything went how Claire said it did
sofigarz I hope it wouldn’t be in hiding..... Allison seems like a sensitive person. She doesn’t deserve to be someone’s down low lay
like gives him a heads up when he finds out when the jocks are going to beat up to one of his friends up?
It shouldn’t have to be this way tho… it screws a lot of people up after high school and they end up stuck in that mentality
I think that’s why Bender reacted so strongly and verbally attacked her. He knew she was right.
Everyone else in the circle seems to want to maintain friendship except for Claire initially, but…
I’d like to think that Claire giving Bender her earring and thusly, Bender accepting Claire’s earring and wearing it signifies that the entire group chose to change and become friends.
Claire is being honest. Society would never allow it anyway
:)
Sad truth
We are society
Lol keep with that victim attitude
@Gizza G no one is forced into anything, we all make choices and if you like someone and want to be their friend it's up to you to make that happen
"you're so conceited Claire" that made me laugh and say aww
I thought he said conceded, both words kinda fit.
Zach Johnson-Same 😭. I’m a loner...wanna be friends?
I think alison was more of a loner then bender
I love Allisons response here. "I dont think the friends I had would mind". I relate to that and feel it deep.
Agree.
the fact that even bender went quiet when brian mentioned having some sort of gun in his locker speaks volumes. he realized that other people that aren’t like him can go through shit that’s just as bad.
especially when he was explaining why, saying "i cant have an f, i cant and my parents cant". bender did the "holy shit" look.
"You just stick to what you know... shopping, nail polish, your father's BMW, and your poor, rich, drunk mother in the Caribbean." This is one of my favorite scenes from the film.

1:22 holy shit I never noticed Brian shedding a tear there
A lot of tears were shed during this whole scene. And it made them all feel better.
It’s almost surreal how close to a real emotionally charged conversation this actually is. They’re not just acting here, but they’re really feeling something. The tears coming from the actors are clearly real. No eye drops going on in the make-up department.
I don't remember either...but powerful movie
The resounding dread and guilt you can see on everyone's faces when Brian said he had a gun in his locker was IMPECCABLE.

"Have you seen some of the dopes who take shop?"
I love the look on Claire's face when he says that. She _knew_ Bender was going to react to that.

One of the most hard-hitting and realistically acted scenes I've ever seen.
My favorite part of this scene is how you see Bender REALLY begins to understand Brian and you can see the understanding in his face when Brian's telling his story.
The Best Movie scene Out of the Entire Movie.
Some films are so good the first time, they don't need a sequel. Breakfast Club is TIMELESS.
I would've really like it if Brian and Allison had ended up together at the end of the film.
Captain Midnight and get rid of that makeover
I agree, to me it would’ve made more sense. There wasn’t any visible connection between Andrew and Allison at the beginning, I don’t get how they should have ended up together, he didn’t really notice her until she had that damn makeover, if anything Clair and Andrew together made more sense. And Bender, I mean he’s my favorite character but he’s too much of a bad boy and he really kind of treated Claire like shit so I don’t get why she liked him.
@Red Moon 96
Girls low-key like that
You know what? I think Andy seems to show an interest in Claire right at the beginning, by sitting near her, protecting her against Bender's shit, and when he is ordered to get the Cokes, he points to Claire, hoping Vernon will pick her so he can spend some private time getting to know her.

Isaac White Would you ever try talking with them again?
Joe Whitehead, sometimes to some of them and to others never after it
Clair had it right, some people are shocked but either things have changed a lot these days or they are kidding themselves.
Wat type school u go 2

"Don't you ever talk about my friends! You don't know any my friends, you don't look at any of my friends, and you certainly wouldn't condescend to speak with any of my friends!"
I always wondered if any of Bender's friends were in similar situations to him at home, and that was why he defended them so passionately. Obviously he could just be a good friend and maybe I'm reading too much into it but it's what I always felt from this scene

@Finn The Goldfish Fuck off.
Its bound to ruin everything.
