    I’d seriously add a good skier’s backpack. Made to endure much more than what typical riding offers, are light and fit snug and secure, have plenty of space and utility pockets, and don’t worry about the fancy “motorcycle backpack” branding +the price that typically follows. Been extreme skiing with my Dakine backpack for +4 years and used it as daily motorcycle backpack for almost 3 years, and not even a single stitching has come undone. Seriously best quality for your money, if all you need is a reliable backpack that can hold bladder/computer, lots of gear, and will last you a decade.

    • @nigelsenchez
      @nigelsenchez 6 лет назад +5

      I put my Dakine though years of hell. Many hard crashes, lots of abuse. It's been drenched in water. Frozen in ice. And fried in the sun. Once a year I give it a wash and a new blader. At this rate It might even last me a decade.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 6 лет назад +2

      hello jaja Dakine are just bulletproof. I'd trust that backpack with my life.

    • @BenHawkinsvids
      @BenHawkinsvids 2 года назад +1

      Was just about to comment that a ski bag is the way to go. I've had my Dakine Heli Pro20 for probably 8 or so years and it just keeps going. It's made to be snug when you're going fast, hold a hydration pack, and hold up under extreme stress, which is really everything you need out of a motorcycle backpack. I'll admit it might not hold up under a high speed motercycle crash but I've fallen off bikes with it at 30mph and skis at 60 and it is still holding strong. I get more comments on that than my bike just because a lot of other riders around me never realized that ski gear and motercycle gear sometimes have a nice overlap.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 2 года назад

      @@BenHawkinsvids Yup! And same goes for spine protection as well if your jacket doesn't offer a decent one built in. Also anything considered inner layer for colder climates are perfect for motorcycling as well. Long socks, sweat draining and breathable inner layers, thin silk gloves that can easily fit under your riding gloves, and so on.
      And yea Dakine bags are just built different. Shredded mine on rocks, ice, high speed crashes, but it never rips.

    Ever since I got a top case for my bike I find myself using it instead of a backpack most of the time.
    Givi certainly isn't as cheap as some of these backpacks, but they are waterproof and to some extent crash proof. No sweaty back. No weight to carry on my back. No limiting my movement.
    And the whole OneLock system is super convenient. It's literally less effort to clip the case to the carrier on the bike than it is to put on a backpack.

    That's the old version of the Kriega messenger bag. The updated version has a blacked out logo, extra storage compartments, and a standard zipper instead of the roll top. I think it's better in every way. It's not "waterproof", but the waterproof flap should keep your contents dry in most conditions.

    Had it maybe 5years so far, and has a slight wear mark from a slid along the ground.
    Keep water in the camelback all the time never had to wash it out, always fill it up and take all the air out then fold.

    I'm definitely a fan of the 35 to 55 liter roll top waterproof backpack that I can use off the bike, that I carry strapped to the luggage rack as a tail bag, with a pair of 20 liter roll top bags that I can use as panniers, then strap to the backpack to carry.
    For commuting where I need collapsible storage and don't need to hike, a waterproof roll top duffle bag is more convenient to load and unload. It'd also be good for motocamping next to the bike.

    I've been using the "sling" version of that kriega messenger bag for almost 3 years in daily basis. It met my expectations for looking more like a common bag that most flashy motorcycle backpacks. So I use it in commute for work and even when not riding.
    Besides being smaller than this larger "urban" version is enough to fit a 13' laptop and a rain suit. It only as one external pocket but enough for wallet, keys, etc.
    I also have the additional US-5 drypack, but... never used it as makes the set too thick. Also never used the strap. The rubberized material is enough to keep the bag in place when using leather jackets. For textile it slides a bit on high speeds at a sportbike position.
    The only thing I never liked is that side pocket zipper sometimes jams against the inner fabric. Happed so many times that under heavy rain e starting to loose impermeability for this section.

    I've found that some bicycling backpacks work great on a motorcycle... I have the Osprey Radial 34. 34 liters of storage, *tons* of pockets, built in waterproof cover (you might want to secure it a little more for motorcycle speeds, and in light rain it isn't necessary anyway), and a wire frame that serves as a pack kickstand, distributes weight, and keeps an air pocket between the pack and you... The only thing on your back is the mesh spread between the frame, so there's nice airflow.
    It wouldn't hold up spectacularly in a crash I'm sure, but when I'm commuting if I crash the contents of my backpack are the least of my worries.

The best thing is to have a concealed rain cover, waist and chest strap and be able to compress everything with straps. (PS: the only feature I'd want in the hiker backpack is the shoulder strap with bucke cause with armoured jacket is kind of difficult to wear in/out backpacks)

    I have the Dakar hydration pack (bought it after watching this video a few months ago) and it is great. You don't feel it on your back, keeps you hydrated without having to stop every hours or so etc.., but.... yep.... damn it is small. Especially small if the hydration bladder is full.

    The note you made about the kriega branding, It blows my mind I have never heard any reviewers mention this type of thing before. Branding placement on accessories is huge and often times I'll skip purchasing something because their branding is whack or they will use like a random color (hi-vis yellow*rolls eyes*)for the font where it doesn't belong. If Kriega had just made that font gloss black, it would still pop out from the back and at the same time be more sleek.

    Have you looked at the Givi Easy Range Backpack. After about 10 different backpack tries, this is the BEST for commuting to work or a nice day ride. Helmet holder and rain cover work flawlessly. (sub $100 is a plus)

    Great video as usual! I have the Kriega R30 and love it. No problems after a year so far. Also, funny hearing a young guy say"Deer" for expensive.

    Just a warning about the Kriega Urban, the ring pull's cord is prone to breaking under daily use. Mine broke after just 11 months of being used 5 days a week.

    $170 for a glorified tac vest... I'll just go to the Army Navy depot & get the same basic thing for $20

      If you find a tac vest for $20 let me know, because the CAF ones are worth about $350.

      The Noble and Mighty Beaver I got a Condor vest from my local Army surplus store for $20. You dont have to spend hundreds of dollors for Cyre when a cheap ass Condor or Ncstar will work.

      pyruleanfire demon - I don't have to buy any because the government supplies mine for free to me. I don't know how helpful a tac vest would be though for dirt or adventure riding. Mine has 4 mag pouches which aren't much good for anything except carrying mags, and the utility pouches aren't particularly aerodynamic. Beyond that a good tac vest is generally fairly heavy as they are designed to be loaded up with 25kg of kit. Ammunition and incendiary devices are heavy.
      All that being said, I agree 100% that motorcycle specific branding drives the price up unnecessarily without providing any extra value. I have a very good, incredibly sturdy, well fitted military day pack with a hydration bladder I bought on sale at CANEX 3 years ago for $50 which is both functional, comfortable and has shown no sign of wear despite being abused.

    If you haven't already, I really recommend looking into backcountry skiing backpacks. I daily my Deuter Freerider 26 (a pack I've used and abused for the past 5 years hiking, climbing, going to school/work, dirtbiking, and yes of course, backcountry skiing) and I have no complaints! Skiing packs generally carry their weight very close to the user, often use high-denier nylon (usually highly water-resistant, sometimes waterproof), have oversized zipper tabs for gloved access (and heavy zippers to match), feature many mounting options on their exteriors and dedicated interior hydration pockets/routing holes, and pretty much always have a separate compartments for tools, general goods, and smaller items respectively.

      Agree backcountry ski and snowboarding backpacks are tough. Used one for hard enduro racing, lots hard trail riding, and big mountain snowboarding. Rain, dust or ice. +40 to -30 Celsius. After many years, still use it to this day.

    What's wrong with using Milsurp webbing? It keeps everything around your body, you can buy more pockets, you can fit loads of stuff in them anyway, you can attach a camelbak to it, most of the pockets are waterproof, you have a decent range of arm movement, it will fit over any jacket, it won't fall apart, and people notice you. It's the ultimate way to carry stuff on a bike. Also it's about £20 cheaper than any of the backpacks mentioned on this list.

    The trapezoid shape is for water. If it was a rectangle and somehow water or moisture got in then your laptop would sit in the water. The trapezoid shape keeps the laptop from falling into that problem.
