Great video as always! Betty White?? 🤔.. Lol!! Hahaha.. Cool to see that match up.. and running low 13's. Love that Impala... Your jokes & humor is running 10.. oh's!!! 🤣🤣🤣
What a well matched race! Your puns were sharp and it was an all around good time. I don't know how it hits everyone else but I always felt Ford took their shot at making a Ford 69 Camaro. The 70 Mustang was them being sneaky, Mustang in front and rear but Camaro from the side. Then 71-73 came and it was full on Camaro time.... Wild. Am I wrong to feel like the Ford big blocks didn't seem to find the full potential of their displacements? When the stick shift was revealed on that Impala, DANG!
Well Wild Bill my 1971 mustang Mach 1 429 SCJ, ram air, 4-spd top loader, 4.11 Detroit Locker found it's full potential when we set the NHRA D/SA Stock Eliminator National Record at 10.86 @ 121.82 mph. The record was held by a Big Block Chevy Camaro @ 10.98 @ 129.34 mph. We could have moved the record even lower (car ran a 10.74 at the same dragstrip a week before the Division 2 Points race ) but then NHRA would have added more HP to the engine making the car heavier, so we short shifted and moved the record 12 hundredths . Just Sayin!!!
Impala was a beast but I think it took some damage looking at the smoke. Mustang ran good but seems like it should be a little faster with that combo. But it may be truly stock and not race prepped like most cars on here. Anyone know anything about it?
I have seen some of these guys really pushing the limits of factory appearing, hiding serious aftermarket internals, and all kinds of speedy tricks to make them fast. Seen a 69 corvette with over 600 wheel hp, and looked bone stock. Or a 700hp hemi road runner that launches on 4 inch wide redlines. I dont care if they keep it stock, or just make it look stock, anybody trying to run on those tiny little bias ply tires has my respect.
That Chevy is sick. Not sure if it's a PCV problem or valve guides. I suppose it could be rings, but I doubt it. I am going with a crankcase ventilation probem. Wonder if they allow vac-u-pan?
I wish my grandfather would have bought a ss 67 impala but the one he got with the 327 open the quadra jet and it will almost pull the front end up at 55mph and it's completely stock except for the exhaust and rims
That Impala is really sexy for a big car. My parents had a 1973 Impala they bought new. Crazy how fast they turned fugly. I would sink down in the back seat in embarrassment when they would drop me off at school.
Mine did too, pale yellow color. Waxed that thing every single week. Wouldnt sell it to me when I got my permit instead gave it to his gardeners who destroyed it in 6 mos looked like it went through armagedon.
@@1dollarten My mistake. Brain fart moment, I guess. Some early SBC heads had o-ring valve seals and non-replaceable valve guides. This BBC Impala either has bad valve seals or worn valve guides, IMHO.
4:56 gears are such a joke on those tires. My stock 1979 f150 with 460, and 2:75 gears, ran 12.98 at 111 mile per hour. I ran 1st and second on the c6 tranny... people were asking me how I got a 2 speed power glide behind that 460. They called me a liar when I said 2:75 gears and a c-6. They actually jacked my truck up and rotated the tires and counted the driveshaft revolutions.. next time out I really blew their minds. I burned forward an extra 100 foot and then did a burnout in reverse. She ran 73 in low, 122 in second and warp 7 in high.. everyone said hi could trim a 1/2 second off with 3:75 gears. I borrowed a 375 chunk from a buddy and she ran a 13.98 every pass. Put the 2.73 back in it and she ran 12.98. I had racing buddies who were baffled. I only ran the truck that night cause my 69 super cobra jet torino blew a ujoint. It started a huge turning point on low gears and big blocks.
4.56 gears is NOT "excessive" for a car weighing approximately 4,200 lbs. That gearing is for getting that tank moving off the line. The quicker your 60' launch is, the quicker your ET is, in the 1/4 mile.
I'm actually kind of curious about something. If anyone cares to inform/enlighten me that'd be great, which one of these cars as far as blindspots go were more tedious to drive? Early 2nd gen Camaro's or the 71'-73' Mustangs?
The impala ss had 456 rear gears with a 4speed virus mustang with 411 rear gears and an automatic transmission, believe it or not that a bigg difference so not evenly matched as you would think.
Not really. I've had 2.73, 3.55, 3.90, 4.10, 4.30, and 4.56,s all in the same car, same Rear, same Tire Size, Going from 4.56 to 4.11 really ain't that big of a difference, especially with each car having different Transmission types. Favoring the 4.56,s with the 4 speed, and the 4.11,s for the C-6, (Automatic).
Actually the mustang shit the bed with a red light. Impala knew it and backpedaled to avoid the smoke show from the valve cover leak. Ask me how I know! LOL
Mustang I'd say...via the ol horse power/weight ratio..had better ets...Would rather have the Impala! Very respectable in stock trim..not sure that 427 liked those 4.56s in high gear....
The mustang has went 12.50 in past but had a issue with the converter so owner was forced to use a less desirable back up converter that slowed the car down. Impala has ran a best of 13.11 in the spring. The air and temp at the track was less than perfect so most or the cars were off there usual times by a few tenths.
I have a grande with 4 bolt main Cleveland with a piston/cam swap Running 2bbl heads and stock manifold (Both ported like crazy) with a 500cfm holley with huge jets. It went from 185hp to 340hp and around 400fpt. 3.25 gears and a fmx with shift kit. Everytime I run someone they are shocked how it can go, but more shocked when I reveal its just a 2bbl with 2bbl heads....lmao
Back in 1983, I had a 1968 Olds Cutlass Supreme with a 350-4bbl with 75K miles on it, powerglide, and a 2.78 rear end, and it ran the 1/4 in a 16.5 @ 85 mph (I was 18 when I ran it)... I would think an Impala with a 427 and a 3.08 should have done better than 15.75 @ 86.5... just sayin'
If you noticed the small single snorkel air cleaner.......that's where the performance went. I doubt the car magazine raised or flipped over the top. My '66 Biscayne wagon (4650lbs with driver and fuel fuel) runs 14.20-14.30's with a 355 gear. Same engine (390HP in '66).
In those days 2 identical cars often ran wildly different times, as if the tune was way off on 1 of them. I watched a matching pair of stock 66 Novas run each other & it wasn't close.
Clearly if they were both factory stock the Mustang would have won easily every time. Meaningful drag race comparisons of original muscle cars today is almost impossible because none of them outside of museums are not modified to some degree. You put a few $K into modifying any middle of the road muscle car from the sixties with blueprinting, a cam and headers and it's going to beat the fastest factory original cars.
Seems like the impala was hurt looking at the smoke and the trap speed falling. Beautiful car either way. Love the drivetrain setup on the mustang but damn if that coupe body style isn't the ugliest aside from the mustang 2.

The dealer didn't care that the Vette was a bit of a dog . So whoever bought the Corvette ended up with a 427 not so fast car.
R.I.P. Frank
A win is a win 67 was a great year for chevy🇺🇲
Wow, a Mustang. They are as rare at the Factory Stock Drags as Cars and Zebra's mom in church🤣🤣🤣
Woops the class was D/S not D/S Automatic, fat fingured the key board.
Chirp .. hahaha great race good vid kid!
Valve cover Gasket first pass all fixed now
That Mustang sure can pull at the top end 🤔!!
does anyone know anything or have information of a 1972 chevrolet bel air two door coupe SS 454 ???
Not to shabby for old cars
That Impala is a ridge running 🌽 lick-her hauling machine with that big trunk.
@gordocarbo That's sad. My parents was also the pale yellow. LOL
Just imagine if the Mustang wasn't driving down the track with his foot on the brake the whole time....
The way the Impala was smoking at the top end, the motor was racing hurt.
I am a Chevy guy but big fat respect to the mustang! And the mustang reaction the 2nd round was not as good
Does anyone compete with a Chevy Biscayne with the drag pack option? 425hp 396 and 4 speed in '65.
I mean.. we could race a linebacker vs a wide receiver.... But that would be... Just as silly.
The Impala was putting out some smoke on that last run! Hope he didn’t break something!
Typical Chevy. Horrible valve seals and valve guides are not replaceable.
@@sergeantmasson3669 umbrella type valve seals and valve guides that can be pressed out and pressed back in
@@1dollarten My mistake. Brain fart moment, I guess. Some early SBC heads had o-ring valve seals and non-replaceable valve guides. This BBC Impala either has bad valve seals or worn valve guides, IMHO.
Most Stangs that run well have 428CJ and Boss 429s in them the rest usually fade in the big end.
1.89 60ft at 4500 lbs is wicked
@@Crashbboxx67 thats right, get the 330 down and it will change your whole run. Cant run a fast pass with a 2.2 60
Chocolate, Robbie, Miller. With that out of the way, this Mustang fanboy will take that 427 Impala every day of the week.
I'm actually kind of curious about something. If anyone cares to inform/enlighten me that'd be great, which one of these cars as far as blindspots go were more tedious to drive? Early 2nd gen Camaro's or the 71'-73' Mustangs?
Is that grey/blue smoke coming out the Chevy? Uh oh....
The weight difference alone, made up for the Gearing difference, and then some.
The 427 Impala shit the bed on the last pass. The 429 lives to fight another day!! Who is the real winner?
Just a blown out rocker cover gasket. Replace the gasket, clean the mess and rock on!
@@wagonmaster1974 that's possible but I don't know
Actually the mustang shit the bed with a red light. Impala knew it and backpedaled to avoid the smoke show from the valve cover leak. Ask me how I know! LOL
The weight difference played a big factor here, that 427 in a Camaro or Nova would have walked away from the stang
Who did you think was going to win this one?
Mustang I'd say...via the ol horse power/weight ratio..had better ets...Would rather have the Impala! Very respectable in stock trim..not sure that 427 liked those 4.56s in high gear....
@@buff6637 it loves those gears😁, been running I'm for last 7 years.
The mustang has went 12.50 in past but had a issue with the converter so owner was forced to use a less desirable back up converter that slowed the car down. Impala has ran a best of 13.11 in the spring. The air and temp at the track was less than perfect so most or the cars were off there usual times by a few tenths.
@@Crashbboxx67 That's a Beautiful Car! 😍 I love the old full size 4 speed Chevys and Pontiacs💜🙏☮
@@Crashbboxx67 I seen a 67 2dr Biscayne 427/4spd on Mecum today...very nice
Mustang WAS ALLOVER THAT CHEVY! AND LOTS OF SMOKE FROM THE G M TANK!
The Impala might be hurtin with the smoke on the top end ...
and now the 67 impala with an L88 427 4 speed manual with bucketseats and magnum 500 wheels please !!!
1 tenth slower and heavy as a full sized truck Id say that was impressive
Low 13s are still pretty respectable on the st.
The smoke out of the Impala was getting worse with each run. Looks like some rings or valve guide seals are due for replacement.
its a GRANDE EDITION! even more rare!
I have a grande with 4 bolt main Cleveland with a piston/cam swap
Running 2bbl heads and stock manifold
(Both ported like crazy) with a 500cfm holley with huge jets. It went from 185hp
to 340hp and around 400fpt. 3.25 gears and a fmx with shift kit. Everytime I run someone they are shocked how it can go, but more shocked when I reveal its just a 2bbl with 2bbl heads....lmao
It sounds like your the commentator on the microphone at the strip! Anybody else notice!?
You might be on to something . . .
@@bman99ss if you watch other pure stock drags its definitely him!!!!
I’m noticing the right lane might be faster. Just saying.
I’ll take the Chevy every day, it’s got a big back seat for after racing 😎
All supernatural theres go baby
Looks like the motor got hurt in the heavy Chevy. Perfect excuse to add more stroke to the cheaty stroker.
Thought for sure the mustang would take the impala, no problem.
It was nice to see a chevy sedan beat a really fast Ford sports car.
I'd still rather have a Impala or a Chevelle.
The left lane won every race.
I watched a matching pair of stock 66 Novas run each other & it wasn't close.
power to weight ratio got impala! 700 LB more weight and extra 10HP is not gonna keep you ahead at end!
What if they both had mods, Mustink boyeee? GTFOH….
Chevy rules baby 👍😎
FYI, According to a generally accepted ET calculator the Chevy would run mid 12s if it weighed 700 pounds less like the Mustang.
Time for a diet I guess lol..
Seems like the impala was hurt looking at the smoke and the trap speed falling. Beautiful car either way. Love the drivetrain setup on the mustang but damn if that coupe body style isn't the ugliest aside from the mustang 2.
Had that Impala lost that extra 800 pounds, it would have cooked that stang.
