This should go without saying, but any negative comments about the owners of these cars will lead to being banned from the channel. If you owned a car that nice, would you be willing to take it to a drag strip? Let alone rev to 7000? Keep in mind these are not professional drivers, they are simply people having a good time, and we are very fortunate to even get to see these cars.
Thank you! As a guy who has run at the last 20 PSMCDR events, It's hard enough to get guys to bring out cars of this quality and let them go full send down the quarter mile. Then when they do, they don't need a bunch of keyboard jockstraps yammering about how they should do this or that. Enjoy the show, from the first pair of cars going down the track to the last, these are all dedicated auto enthusiasts having fun and putting on one hell of a show.
69 Z28 Camaro with a DZ 302 was rated at 290 horsepower is actually around 400 so what actually was the horsepower for 302 Ford I bet it was more than traded
@@mojo3008 you're here for the same reason? 😂
Both drivers suck almost as much as hyper-sensitive beta male soyboys who love censorship.
@@edlonghorn1507 IIRC the Boss 302 made more peak power and slightly less average power on Westech engine dyno. Both very underrated. There's a video on here of the dyno.
NO VOLUME AT ALL!!! Did you getarrested by the u2be police?!?!
The L82 was a darn, good engine. Nice to see one of those out racing. Beautiful Chevelle, thank you for sharing! And thanks for these great videos and several laugh out loud moments. ~ Chuck
My dad's first Corvette was a '78 Pace Car. I was so in awe the first time I saw the car. Sitting in the passenger seat at 10 years old and looking out over the hood at those huge fenders was something I can only describe as orgasmic!!!!! The car was brand new and the silver leather seats were chrome like. Unfortunately it was just an L48 car. My dad ended up being so disappointed in the performance that it never got driven. In '79 he bought a new 10th Anniversary T/A with the 400/4 speed and it would run circles around the Vette. I was even more in love with it and my dad actually gave it to me for a graduation present in 1986. I traded it in 1987 for a brand new Formula 350 because I thought it was so cool and my girlfriend at the time said I would look really sexy driving it. Wow what a mistake. They both would be gone by 1989. I would love to have that Trans Am back and I would even love to have my dad's old Corvette back. My dad sold it in 1987 with only 4k miles on it.
So did your Dad sell it or did you trade it in?
@@gordocarbo Good question. I'm pretty sure he sold to an individual but he was prone to trading cars off and in 1987 he bought a new GTA and 2 Grand Nationals (one for him and one for my stepmom). If he traded it then it went to the local GM dealer.
That leaf roast was absolutely brilliant.
Didn't know the different ways you could get the Corvette. It ran really well. Was expecting the mustang to pull harder but that was a good race. Always liked the mustangs and javelins of that time. That green Chevelle was sweet. Sounds badass 👍
Always loved these Corvettes. Should have bought one when I was younger. They were underrated from 0 to 60. Quarter mile drag, yeah they were not going to hang with a big boy from the 60s and early seventies.
I remember a 1978 Corvette that raced at Gainesville around 1980. It was a stock L82 except for the exhaust and it ran 14.3s
I'm guessing that L82 was choked. IMO a bit more cam / spring, higher shift point, free flowing exhaust, and 3000 stall and it would break a high 13
I've always thought that 78 two tone scheme without the stickers was so classy yet sporty looking. One of my all time favorite paint schemes on any car. Surprised that 302 didnt pull very hard
Yep, it's WAY down on HP. Time for a super tune!!!
@@ct87gn25exactly!!
@@ct87gn25 Think its got a little too much gear. 302s just didnt make torque
Glad to see I'm not the only one who expected the mustang to win.
I think it could have done better with a different driver.
@@jamesb.armstrong5433 I think the owner/driver didn't want to risk breaking his (likely) prize possession... can't really blame him for that. They're only original once.
@@jamesb.armstrong5433 That part!
Its a bad ass road recer not ment for drag racing ,but this one had some low gears but a 3 inch stroke doesn't make much torque
what did ford have in 1978 then? surely they were merely competing with a different car back in 1970
I think the 70 Boss 302 was one of the best looking cars ever made. I had a friend who owned one with headers, larger air cleaner and a stout geared rear end…he could run high 13s with it, they loved to be wound out to 7,000 rpms.
I heard they came with too small of a carburetor?
@@aphil4581 the carb on the boss 302 was larger than the one on the boss 429
They came with a 780 Holley.
@@aphil4581 The 780 Carb was plenty. Problem was the huge 2.25 inch intake valves on a small 302 motor. That weren't particularly tractable down low, but really came on strong @ higher rpms.
The Boss 351 had essentially the same heads, but they performed much better on the streets with the extra cubic inches
@@aphil4581 That was the Boss 9, the Boss 302 use the Holley 4150 780cfm, the same size a LS6 454 used.
Your Chevelle is beautiful.
Love the green paint.
What does it run in the quarter?
Does your mother approve of your super duper funny videos?
L35 396 with 325hp, 3.31 gears and a shift kit with the turbo 400. Manual shifting at around 6K it was typically a low 14 car. The previous owner put in a way too aggressive cam for a stock 2-bolt main engine and 3.31s.
Still has its original heads and cast iron intake manifold.

very true. Hot rod magazine even took their Boss 302 and threw on a different carburetor, a set of long tube headers, and drag slicks, and it managed 13.9. Not bad by any means, but definitely not as quick as some people would believe.
@@CarsAndZebras ❤️🏁🇺🇸👍
Exactly.....the boss 429, or even a mach 1 with a 428 cj , or the boss 351 would make better drag cars than a boss 302
Yup, same for the first gen Camaros with the DZ302. AMC had the Javelins with what I guess was the 304 engine?? Trans Am series had a 305 Cubic Inch limit.

That green is awesome 👌 and the panel gaps look perfect such a great job on the restoration just stunning 😍 👌 👏
Had a 70 Boss 302 basic rebuild, headers, cam, carb & gears ran 12:20’s all day @ 112 mph
Reaffirms my memories of destroying every 302 boss mustang under the sun with my 70 440 sixpack Challenger.
Boss engine never made much more than the claimed 290 gross hp, so no big deal for someone with 400+hp ;)
@@goldenltd1970 Yes the BOSS Mustang was not a light car like the 68 fast backs so they were a easy kill for any of the BB cars. From red light to red light stock. Even the 383, 340 Mopar's and 302hp and up SB Chevys would roll by them. Great car with a 429 semi hemi though.
Well a 440 Six Pack, let's put it on even playing fields here. A 71 Boss 351 would Wipe the floor with Mopars Almighty 340, don't matter how many Carburetors Dodge put on em, and the 383,s were some of the Biggest Turds for a Big Block back in the day. 302 Cubes Against 440, Do the Math. Should we count multiple Carburetors too. When i was a kid we had a 71 Charger, 383 car, Father Sold Very quickly, Said it was too Slow.
The Boss was by No means a Drag Racer or a Stop Light to Stop Light Racer, was meant to Destroy Z/28,s and AAR Cudas, Challenger T/A,s, on the Road Courses, Which it did.
@@badass6.0powerstroke10 Thats true and I now know the boss 302 engine was the only engine designed specifically for high rpm racing. The extra large ports and big carburetor killed even the midrange on the small 302.
This was a fun vid for me...have a 74 L82 auto 3.55 corvette and a '70 Mach Cleveland with the big port/valve heads like the Boss, 3.89 4spd. The vette is bone stock but well maintained...the Mach is built as Day 2, 408 stroker, steep cam. The clevelend is a brute...a killer...sounds so 'boss' with that Cleveland snarl. But the L82 is surprising super quick and a lot fun...a bit more herspers than the '78. Luv the mustang but truly its a tractor compared to the corvette out on the road.
That Corvette ran what my '77 TA ran (15.10 @ 92) back in the mid 80's when i took it to the track for the 1st time with just the convertor cut off the exhaust.
There are negative issues with the Boss, or perhaps the driver not real committed to running it, my 70 runs 14.30 with the only mod being of Hooker headers .
The ford was really catching up on the first run @ 94mph. I can see where headers would help this car in first gear with more torque for a good launch. Surprised the gears alone didn't make it work.
Both are fine cars in their own way but what a weird match-up.... how about a riding mower vs. a Safeway (race prepped) shopping cart?
I’ve never seen these two cars in the series. Are they fresh builds? I expect once they sort them out and exploit the rules, we’ll see some deep 14 sec runs. Especially with the 1.5 point compression increase and .070 overbore allowed to the motors. The Boss trapped at 94 mph in the first race and 90 mph in the second. He was definitely having some issues. Always liked the L82 Vette motor! That cam had a sweet lil subtle lope.
THink that was the biggest production hyd cam GM ever used. SAme as L46 L79 I believe
I hate to see what my ‘74 Formula would do out there. Just like these, break out the sundial! Thanks for the video! Awesome Chevelle, by the way!
I have an L82 4 speed Pace Car. I have never raced it and think it has good power. People are surprised at how well it goes when it I get on it since it's a 70's car.
I own an 82 corvette but that was pretty sad display by the mustang. I would say it’s crazy gear ratio hurt it’s performance as the engine didn’t have the cam to support those rpm’s
Yep small cam and way too much gear
THey didnt make the underrated 400hp everyone wants to claim for sure! lol
Is the Mustang ok? I would've thought with 4.86 gears it would have done better
Yep. My first car was a 69 Z28 and I had much respect for my buddy with a Boss 302. We had some great country road runs and whoever screwed up the least won. I didn't think the EPA Corvette had a snowball's chance in hell in this race. The Pony should have definitely won the first half of each race.
@@stephenhensley7004 me a 70 1/2 camaro z28
It sounded like it needed more rpm. Limiter must've been set low.
Bet it would have ran better with some 4.30s or 4.56s
I strongly suspect the Mustang driver just didn't want to run all out.
@@maxschut7093 Had too much gear and an engine with no torque
My 1978 "Silver Anniversary Edition" L82 automatic listed at $18,600.00 CAD and the "Pace Car" listed at $25,000.00 CAD. That was huge money in 1978.
The mustang looked like he was taking it easy on his ride don’t blame him but that is the best looking shark I’ve seen in a while they both looked great out there though I do like the boss 302 a lot one of my favorite hot rods

My wore out stock F.I. Fox Mustang with an auto trans ran 14.70 with a 4.10 gear.
Wow, I wasn't expecting that!!! I thought the Boss cars were much bossier and the older c-3 a bit slower, but it certainly wasn't on this day.
Thanks to the owners for sharing these gems with us and taking them out to flog and have fun with!!! And thanks to you sick funny man for the jokes and filming as well!!!
Keep it coming please!!!
Good race. The Corvette got the hole shot each time. I thought the Mustang would have done better. Oh well. Thanks for this post.
I love these races.
Corvette ran hard for it's year. I believe that Boss 302 should've won, though. 4.88 gears are great for stoplight to stoplight hops, but I believe in a quarter mile run they were simply winding the Mustang out far too soon. 3.73 would be a good ratio for it.
Mustang didn’t have a chance!
L82s did run great but somethings wrong with the BOSS or somebody don't know how to drive. 4:86s could be a lil steep for the BOSSES 6250 rev limiter tho too, unhook it the race may have come out different.....Chevelle is awesome, had a small block Nova that color.
What Chevelle?

that Chevelle....why aren't we seeing more of that Chevelle? 🤤
Its in a car sale or in a garage geting cover in dust
Beautiful Chevelle. That Mustang was no boss. Very disappointing for the owner; I would assume. My brother's 1973, 340 Barracuda, ran mid 14's with 3:23 gears. Headers, an aluminum intake, and 600cfm carburetor were the only deviations from stock.
What Chevelle?
Great video's always Thanks for Sharing
My friend in 1978 had the anniversary edition vette and said it was the crappy est vette he ever drove. Those were his own words.
On the other hand myself got a ride in a Boss 302 and it was a beast! He ran 13's at the track with mild tweaks, so something must have been wrong with this Mustang.
Myself owned a stock 70 302 with 2bbl carb that my shop teacher and I set up on the oscilloscope with some tricks he was a pro drag racer.with that said I embarrassed a 69 LT1 vette. He couldn't believe it was a stock 302. Don't get me wrong I love vettes, especially the 69 427 that a known drag racer said it was the scariest car he ever raced.
That corvette is another smog car with good performance ,78-79 w-72 trans am's also had early 70's performance the TA where running mid to high 14's .I did not know you could get the l-82 with a 4 speed in 79 .z-28 had 190 net in 79 same as a standard vette motor .Shocked the corvette did that well seeing it weigh.s what 3800-3900 lbs .The Boss ran 302 2 bbl times was it towing that green chevelle?.
A win without even hitting a 14 oh boy
That’s exactly what I thought the Corvette would run, but I’m shocked that Boss is that slow. I thought it was going to be a spanking. Beautiful Chevelle, ‘69 is my favorite year. Do you have a video of your car somewhere on the channel?
Cars and zebras, you do have a beautiful Chevelle! What front springs do you use for factory ride height? Thanks Bobby...oh keep the videos coming!
I had a 1978 Corvette Silver Anniversary Edition with L82 automatic and oyster interior. It retailed for about $18,000.00 CAN. It was sucked out with a top speed around 125 mph. My friends Lil' Red Express Truck kicked my ass. Very embarrassing!
The 1978 Corvette Pace Car retailed for about $25,000.00 Canadian. Very expensive for its time.
That truck was the quickest thing out most the 70s and 80s
L82 Vette vs boss = First On Race Day!
My dad had the nicest 69 Mach 1 GT had the 351 in it this was back in the day
That had the 290 hp 351W most likely, First year of the Windsor, Very Good Engine, my Dad got 1 in his 67 Fastback, it now has AFR 185,s on it.
That Boss was Petherick!!! I had a 1965 Mustang with a built 289 with a 3 speed manual and 350 traction lock rear and destroyed a vette just like that one!!!!
Very consistent 78 vette 😊 good race 👍🏻
Kinda wish ya had 60ft times, as the mustang had a significantly higher trap on 1st round. Which to me indicates it didn't have a clean run, possibly issues with traction? Fun race still, I love these videos trying to guess who will win based on all the info.
He swung for the fences with that rear ratio.
The Corvette ran what you would expect a 1978 to run but that was terrible running Boss 302. They all came with 4 speeds and he either had no idea how to drive it or something was terrible wrong with it. I had a new 1970 Boss 302 back then and while it wasn’t a rocket it did run 14.20 at 102.00 in the quarter off the showroom with a 3.91 rear gear. Headers and a Ford Muscle Parts LeMans cam and it went 13.50 at 107.00. Changed read gear to a 5.47 and small drag slicks and it ran 12.60 at 109. I was a dumb kid at that time so it wasn’t like I did anything super special just very basic changes. Yes , I drove it on the street and 120 miles round trip to the drag strip with 5.47 gears. Never once was it trailered to the track. Later on I helped a friend build one around 1976 basically the same as mine was but it had been lightened and had suspension work and a roller cam and it ran 11.40 at 123 MPH. He didn’t drive his on the street but it was still pretty basic.
Looks more like 2.86 gears for the mustang.
Not uncommon for competition car scca
I had the 1978 Silver Anniversary Edition with L82 automatic. It was sucked out. My friend's Li'l Red Express truck kicked my ass every time.
Beautiful Chelleve! Last one I saw you had was orange I believe..Do you restore and sell them?

Da Boss got busted. I expected it to win hands down.
In the 80's I street raced against a built Boss with a .600" cam and 5.00 gears. It "sounded" like it revved to 9 grand, but it was no match for my CJ XR7 Cougar with 3.89 gears and a C6. Torque rules. He eventually sold the Boss and built a Cobra Jet-powered Mustang. This was in the SFV just north of Ventura Blvd.
413x398, CANNOT put a .600 camshaft in a stock Boss 302 engine and they will NOT rev to 9000 RPM either. .553 lift is the maximum.
@@sergeantmasson3669 That's what the owner said. And I didn't say it was stock, I said it was built. And they absolutely will rev to 9000 and beyond. Putting parentheses on a word does not make it an iron-clad truth. Stuff some reality in your head, young man.
@@413x398 FALSE. I'm a 50+ years master level factory certified auto/truck tech. Most of those years with Ford. BTW, I bought my all options 1969 Boss 302 Mustang new at TASCA Ford in RI and I still own it. RPM's over 7000, is a waste of time being its peak HP was at 6800.
@@sergeantmasson3669 I was hooked up with Road And Competition Engineering, who used to strip and modify GT350's and Boss 302's on a regular basis for customers running SCCA B and C production. Their engines ran extended between 8000 (289) and 9500 (B302). The engine in the guy's Mustang I mentioned was built by them.
I'm glad to hear you still have your Boss. I still have my GT/CS, which had an 8000-rpm 289 in it back in the day.
Of the 60 cars I have now, seven are factory Cobra Jets, two have CJ transplants, and I have enough major components to build 7 or 8 more CJ engines. Two FE HR's, four MR's, and countless other engines are stacked high here.
My good buddy reads the B302 forum. He describes most of the members there as anal retentive. Sad to see the proof here.
If thats the Boss owned by the 2 brothers that used to show up at Kevins burgers in Chatsworth....I remember it well
They had a couple of them. Grew up in the sfv
Little fidding with the distributor and richening the Q jet and the L82s ran well.

Torque is where its at on the st. Stang probably had a little too much gear. Both cool rides!
Good thing I'm not a degenerative gambler other wise I would have lost my ass on that match up.
I don’t know what happened but the Boss should have won easily. Had to have been because of a bad driver. The 70 Boss 302 actually put out over 360 Hp, most of them tested in the 370 range. I saw too many of them race and there’s no way that weak 350 should have won.
I learned to drive a stick in a 1978 L82 Vette when I was 15. Kinda wish that car was still around

Always cool and fun
In that race there are many cars from diferent states ?

Keep the jokes coming. I enjoy the commentary .
I'm really surprised that a prime year Boss 302 got beaten by a smog motor Vette. I watched my brother driving my '66 Fairlane wagon w/289 beat a mid-70s Vette in a stoplight drag.
was that an eagle that just flew from the bosses arse? lol.
What is the color of your 69 Chevelle. Is it Gold.? Because I think they had a similar color called frost green.
My church, St. Anthony in Anaheim, CA raffled off a Boss 302 back in the day.
Yeah, the guy with the Mustang, needs more track experience. And I'm a Chevrolet guy. My first experience at a track, probably was his,... waiting to see green, no, as soon as you see the 2nd yellow, floor it.! I ran a best of 15.50 the first time I ever ran at a dragstrip with a 69 Chevelle with a stock 350 and a stock 350 turbo trans with a 3.08 open rear axle.
Very nice cars both. Before I turned into a Blue Oval guy, had an opportunity to buy a Boss 302. Why would I want that? Yes, I have made bad decisions.
Need a 351C4V with 10.5 :1 compression in the same car same driver different results my My 72 351-CJ in a Gran Torino stock made 248 with much less compression. That Mustang is valuable if all original match # & documented. Nice to see it.
Hence 71 Boss 351. The Pinnacle of Cleveland Performance from the Factory, been known to Beat Up on Many 383,s and 396,s.
The rear end in the Mustang was definitely meant more for 1/8 mile strip.
Yet even at half track he was down 3 car lengths...
Anybody elese getting no volume? Did the u2be polezi interfere?
That Mustang driver must have the slowest reaction time ever recorded.
Looks like the upgrades didn't go well on the Mustang, I was expecting better performance. Still I'd love to own one of those.
Good race, I think that mustang was at a big disadvantage with those tires.
The Boss 302 was designed for extended high RPM Trans Am racing. The small CID was Trans Am's rule, not Ford's better idea. They weren't all that great on the street, but were terrors in on the track.
Correct ,a road racer
The small block Bosses are fine street engines unlike the Chevy's. Their great heads allow them to use modest cam timing with high lift. Where Chevy had to use a ton of cam timing to make the power. The Chevy solid lifter engine are pretty high strung by production car standards you can hear at idle side by side. Growing up I grew around original examples of the 302's and the Ford was a much better street engine where they were fairly close at the drag strip. No one like us war road racing in the 80's. We had no shortage of big block around me so these guys were all small fish. Rural Virginia and loads of big blocks.
@@Dayandcounting Both were turds on the st .Torque is where its at and neither brand had any lol
Back in the early 80's I spanked an L82 Vette and '76 400 T/A with my little 'ole '79 Mustang Pace car with a factory 2bbl 302 with a single exhaust and a small .456 Comp cam and the original smogger heads. I creamed that Vette with three of my buddies in that car. Wonder how I would have faired against both of these cars?
That must be a bummer for you ford guys !
The Corvette probably produces more power. Considering it’s rated as net horsepower. Add the consistency of the automatic, and this is the result.
A friend recently rebuilt his L82 using a 383 stroker kit in the stock block and had the stock heads redone. A bit more cam and Holley Sniper FI. Motor actually still looks stock on the outside. He also replaced the TH350 with a 700R4 4spd auto with B&M internals. It is one of the fastest '78s around.
And next the Corvette's gonna race a mail truck!
These cars looked way faster than their ETs. I know that era Vette is pretty lacking in the performance department, but damn do they look good.
C & Z's these videos are awesome....it would be awesomer if you put the current value of each car to see which was a better investment
Cars arent investments for the most part. Just money spent on a hobby
I'd rather have the Mustang but both are awesome cars
220 net HP. At the wheels. That means a at least a 300 hp engine What is wrong with that smog choking performance? Corvette does me proud once again!!!!!!
Yessir, Tiny Meat Gang represent
L48 really isnt that bad. My 79 has an l48 tag on the hood, and it is quite speedy.
I have a plate on the inside that tells me the specs of the engine: 195 hp, and 286 ft lbs torque
But i mean it moves super fast, but i dont think all of the engine is original since it has a 4 barrel holley carb and an edelbrock air filter, and who knows what else
I just got the car about a month ago, so im new to these cars and engines.
It may even have an l82 in it, and the previous owner just never took the "l48" tag off the hood. I have no idea.
Is the Boss sick here? I’ve seen much better performances from 302s before I’m wondering if there’s some sort of mechanical issue
No torque. Small cam way too much gear
Of the two cars I would definitely choose the mustang Boss just so I can look at it
The Mustang looks like it had a clutch slippage problem.
Mustang needs taller gears!
I cant believe that mustang owner ruined that car with those gears.
Probably a blast to drive on the street. How did that ruin an entire car? lol
😆😆😆..... " Tony must have been a Corvette owner " 💥💥💥.
The Corvette's horsepower rated at net is probably equivalent or higher than the Mustang's horsepower that's rated under the old gross method. Likewise a stock EFI 5.0 fox Mustang engine with 225 net horsepower would be very comparable powerwise to the Boss 302, but in a lighter chassis.
I grew up in the Foxbody Mustang Era, they were Definitely the Muscle Car of the 80,s especially Mid to Late 80,s when the 85 GT Came out, then in 87, the 225 HP 302 will turn that Mustang into a Very Fun Car, especially T-5 Cars. I've had my 86 Since 1994, Will probably Never Sell it. Chevy guy, I thought the Ford would win love the Boss 302s. I think he wanted to thrash on it a bit it may got closer. I understand the sm difference between nice drag racing and thrashing to get max torque + hp. I still think that Ford got a bit left in the rpm range beautiful Mustang + sweet optioned Vette . 69 + 70 Boss 302 cars are awesome I'm a Chevy guy.
I know that mustang would go door to door with that vette! And of course it would be my choice between these 2
I’ve seen an identical Corvette run a second quicker bone stock except for exhaust.
