Michael Barbados ..not for the next 100 years..it's the best contemporary and progresive English rock band. The best voice, just like a charubine Jon Anderson, of course, says it all. That music of YES, it's what YES has offered to the future generations,.and it'll last as beautiful as humanity and future generations exist.
Some memorable performances of AYAI that I've seen include: (1) 9/25/72 Hartford, CttE Tour (never heard it before, not even the album); (2) 12/14/74 Philadelphia, Relayer Tour-1st US leg (Close-r than front row); (3) 7/25/75 Jersey City, Relayer Tour- 2nd US leg (2 huge video screens projecting blue sky & puffy white clouds during AYAI....and yes, the 'shrooms were fabulous!); (4) many powerful In-The-Round versions, late 1970s, with Steve's soaring steel guitar and Chris' deep bass pedals); (5) 12/3/87 Hartford, "The BIG Tour" (never felt Chis' pedals more intensely in the chest cavity. Roof shaking. I pumped my fist in the air...).
It is good to see the comments here, I had always wondered if I alone had these feelings of emotion that struck my very core. It is as if the resonate natural vibrations moved and harmonized with the frequency of my soul. This will be our classical music of our children and grandchildren to come. It seems some years ago we have moved out of the prog rock movement and it is with sadness to recall this fact. These songs will be played at my funeral for sure.
I saw Yes for the 4th Time in my life this last March 2011 in Houston ... The first time was after the Yes Songs Album was released so I got to hear songs from the Yes Album , Fragile and Close to the Edge .... the second time I saw them was right after the realease of Tales from Topographic Oceans (1972 - 1974 Denver) I did not hear them again, the third time until (1982) Chicago. These extremely talented musicians always amaze me when they can reproduce live exactly what is produced in studio
my favorite live version of "And You And I" is the Songs from Tsongas concert. The variations of this wonderful song they played that night, in my opinion, is slightly better than this version. Oooh what an ASMR trigger for me to listen to these amazing prog songs! This band will stand the test of time surely! Love and blessings to all!
have been a Yes fan since i first heard them in the mid 70's ... and And you and i is my favorite ... each of the many times i saw them in concert is my favorite!!! although, Tales is such an awesome piece of music ....
I agree with the person who posted this - While _ALL_ live versions of 'And You And I' are truly a rewarding listening experience, this live version from "Keys To Ascesion" (with minor overdubs) is my absolute favorite rendition of this Yes Classic. Especially at the end of the song: Listen to Jon's final words "valleys of endless seas" and the combination of Rick's synths, that ending takes you to a place only YES music can. Wonderful Stuff.
Just beautiful....Studio versions and live versions bring each one a different beauty and spirit. I still prefer the studio version because it brings lots of layers of subtle details....a guitar fill here, a third keyboard fill there, etc. However, live versions brings all the power and energy an inspired soul can deliver. No need to make a choice between them...
Keys to Ascension was an awesome recording. It is one to keep! Much better than the early recordings of yessongs and yesshows. I wish Jon was with the band right now. They've been around our area a few times, but I refuse to go if Jon isn't lead vocalist. Where are the days of ABWH. Throw in Squire and you'd have an amazing group again!!!!
this is brilliant, am a long time fan and this is a song that stands out above everything. what other group could offer anything live like this - they show they're experts
you are so right. this IS the best live version i've ever heard. and i've been seeing them live since 72'. just the best in concert. after the dead of course
I saw these geat guys at "The BACKYARD" in Austin Texas I was on front row stage right,I was 10 feet from Rick Wakeman and even had a short conversation with him during the show! What a night ! They did the Entire "oceans" album and Steve did a 25 minute solo.Rick was wearing a Long rattlesnake coat down to his silver Nike shoes...Best concert I ever saw I watch the stars by this stuff now...Later!
I saw Jon Anderson do his one man show at the Green Valley Ranch in Las Vegas on Friday night (Feb 24, 2010...do yourself a favor and see this show if it comes to a town near you. The singular greatest voice in rock history. Theirs is the soundtrack of a lifetime.
I don't have a favorite live performance of this song, but it was fun to be there in SLO when this one was recorded. The energy around the 3-day event was beyond any other YES experience I'd ever known, and perhaps will ever see again.
the voice.......... jon anderson ,chris squire is also a classically trained voice beautiful! The Yes Album came out when my 15 year old girlfriend had our first son, "Yours is no disgrace " gave hope in an interesting time for a weighed down surfer. Now 40 years later I've heard my sons band play a riff in their music which sounds very familiar ...... to that song,
We were there,at the Freemont, an old style art deco type theater.I saw them in '74 on the "Tale From Topographic Oceans" tour...but they outdid themselves on this show. Jon lives around here now, and they had all of their old equipment (no cheating here). Every moment was MAGICAL! Best show EVER! Cried at the beauty.
I thought I had heard all the live versions of this song. Thanks for posting this. It is possibly the best live version I've heard. Steve on the steel guitar is what has always made this song so hauntingly beautiful. Gawd they were great and so underappreciated.
Is that this one: THIS VERSION is the Best Live or otherwise, lend your ear to what IS the VERY HEAVENLY BEST & LIVE VERSION of this Song and ALL the others too here: ruclips.net/video/k6Sp3U5mIUc/видео.html
There are so many versions I love. The first tour I saw was the most magical. My favorite music/band all time. I even found myself in tears as Phoenix as AWAKEN was performed in 2012 at a casino with current vocalist. Not the best YES for me yet I was most surprised...it was so much more than the Canadian vocalist from the previous tour where DRAMA music was featured. To me the real YES is whatever version moves me through life as I mix eras and musicians....so many really.
I saw them when they did their masterwork tour in 2000. That was one Mark 1 Mod 0 mindblowingly wonderous concert. They dug stuff out that they hadn't played in 25 years (two songs off the Tales of a Topographic Ocean album for starters). I could have stopped going to concerts then as it was the most wonderous thing I'd ever seen first hand. I've been to many concerts since (Rosfest 2009 came close (Officer! These 5 Swedish kids traipsed in here and stole the show!), but not quite).
You'd be cheating yourself if you didn't hear this version of it, THIS VERSION is the Best Live or otherwise, lend your ear to what IS the VERY HEAVENLY BEST & LIVE VERSION of this Song and ALL the others too here: ruclips.net/video/k6Sp3U5mIUc/видео.html
Rick Wakeman was a master at playing the Mellotron. The tapes under each key only last about 8 seconds when depressed. To get the lush & musical violin and choral sounds that he obtained required a tremendous amount a skill. Check out the TFTO tracks "Ritual" & "Revealing Science of God" for further Wakeman Mellotron mastery. Robert Fripp is extremely talented with the Mellotron as well. The Mellotron was very difficult to play effectively with it's inherent limitations. Kudos to them.
Bruford departed before they toured this song and the album it came from. By default Alan White has come to own all of Close To The Edge and it is his work for the ensuing 45 years that helped cement the recording’s justified reputation. Besides, he was a God live on these works. Period. Alan truly owned Close To The Edge, kit and caboodle.
Much as I once loved Yes in the late 1970's (and even bought a copy of FISH OUT OF WATER to add to my collection) there has been this undertone of things, following the release of DRAMA, that Yes has been kept alive to keep Squire in the style to which he's become accustomed to. The injection of his harmonica into this classic is his jab at us, that "this my gig. If you don't like it, go home" ...which is what many of us have done. You should have seen the packed house for Jon's solo show....
So to settle the argument, the best version of this song is the one we’re listening to now. Whether this one, or the studio, or the Yessongs, or ABWH. I have personally seen them lay entire arenas low with And You And I, versions which are none of the above. I was at MSG in 2004 when the audience, who had largely talked through most of the show to that point, gave them a standing ovation after Apocalypse and wouldn’t let them finish the sweet, little beautiful coda to the song. For a few moments, they ran around the stage like young men, again. Little boys. It was very, very emotional. And THAT still wasn’t the best version I’ve seen them do. Needless to say, it was one of their signature live pieces. For good reason. Just another reason Yes were on another plane, another level entirely when they got it going. When dialed in and on their game I never saw anything like live Yes. Seen quite a lot of acts, different genres. I feel at least a little qualified to make a statement like this. It must be remembered their studio work was considerably complex. As a young person my early listens found me thinking to myself, “These guys can’t do this stuff live.” Then Yessongs came out… …imagine my surprise when it appeared not only could they, but they could be better live. My adult life has been characterized by confirming this. Yes were, astoundingly, as good as all those studio albums were, ARE, really a live band. Astonishing, isn’t it.
i completely agree with that! i like steves tone in the 70's. that was the first version i heard too! i coped an old VHS onto dvd but i cant believe they haven't commercially rerelieased that film on dvd! its really good!
From my favorite yes album, though my favorite pick from that album was of course 'close to the edge', which will always be perhaps their best piece they've ever done...in my opinion. I call it their psychotic work of genius.
@FHD59 Yes fostered my musical consciousness at the age of 13, when I first heard Tormato. I then worked my way back through the catalogue, album by album, compared to Yes, other music seems not quite there. Where it comes from? The weirdest theories seem to be right in this case.
My best loved version of this song is the one from the Yessongs. I like the grand powerful opening of the full band instead of the quiet guitar opening and also the parts with the acoustic guitar here are played with electric guitar on Yessongs which gives it more of healthy aggression and make it even bigger and grander. But it´s just my personal taste. Anyway all versions are amazing. Maybe I like the yessongs version just because that was the first version I have ever heard.
YESSONGS VERSION... although it be an absolutely SHOCKING recording... Will ALWAYS ALAWAYS BE their very very best recording of this utter masterpiece.
@@craigmadz I totally agree and being able to watch them on the video is absolutely awesome it has to be the best version ever they were all young in their Prime and the sound was amazing it was awesome how that that film even came about. Steve Howe had a friend who was doing videos and that is how that show ended up being taped at the Rainbow Theater in London we were all so lucky that was recorded
It IS and I Agree with You, No other Tops that one , it IS the VERY HEAVENLY BEST & LIVE VERSION of this Song and ALL the others on that Amazing Live album, here: ruclips.net/video/k6Sp3U5mIUc/видео.html
@@jeffbogue3718 It say's it was Live at the Maple Leif Gardens in Ontario, Canada in 1972 but I Always believed it had been recorded at Madison Square Garden in N.Y.C. This is the one I'm talking about: ruclips.net/video/k6Sp3U5mIUc/видео.html
YEAH 'YES' WAS VERY GOOD FEEL GOOD -TAKE A TRIP -TRAVEL MUSIC-kinda like where pat methaney can take you (so to speak)def catering to a mature audience of sorts and musicians alike-my first YES album yes Tales..and people told me if you can get into Tales you can get into anything yes has done (lol)..i still have Alan Whites drum sticks from the Detroit 2 in a row concerts/Cobo Hall '76 -seeing that Crab on stage actually scared me at first- they opened w/Siberian-WHAT A GREAT AZZ CONCERT
Yes is the greatest band ever, but the Yessongs version is significantly better - much more intensity and excitement. Probably due to them being younger and more vibrant back then. Just a rabid Yes fan opinion.
Yessongs is the greatest live recording in history. In many cases they surpass the studio pieces, which is totally mind blowing when you think of the complexity and grandeur of YES.
Being able to watch them play close to the edge on the yessongs album in their Prime is truly amazing . Close to the edge was a brilliant album I wish Siberian khatru was on the live video
ABWH : An evening of yes music plus was also a very good recording/concert!
Excellent version!! I do like it better than the ABWH performance. Number one, no Chris on vocals or bass on the ABWH. Not having Chris on vocals is just about as bad as not having Jon on vocals. Just doesn't sound the same. And Davidson is rough to listen to. Number 2, did Bruford have to play them awful electronic drums. They sound bad. What were they thinking.
Oh Wait a minute here, Anyone who thinks THIS VERSION is the Best Live or otherwise, lend your ear to what IS the VERY HEAVENLY BEST & LIVE VERSION of this Song and ALL the others too here: ruclips.net/video/k6Sp3U5mIUc/видео.html
I've seen Jon Anderson open a show singing nou Somme do solidly to say it was spell binding was something else and the show at kings dock Liverpool best concert I've ever been to Jon Anderson is tops just like Mr squire and rest may yes live on
@TacomaPaul They didn't do this in 1976. They opened with a small part of The Apocalypse From And you And I. You must mean 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977 or 1979. The lights were on hanging spines In The Round 1978 and 1979, but no And You and I in 1978. but the clouds going by might be 1977. The vertebrae tour is 1974 and 1975.
I would have to say the Union tour 1991 version of this from the shoreline amphitheatre California was the best ever the 8 of them just put so much effort into that version that night this is good but just dont have the 8 of them sound to it
Want immortality? Just be better than 99.9% of the people who play your instrument (in Jon's case, his angelic voice) and get in a band with people of the same caliber. Then create and record the best music of the century you're in, that's all. There's hardly any 'luck' in the equation, at least back in those days. There's a *LOT* of hard work involved, though.😊 Yes will go down as one of the best bands ever.
@studentjohn36 Ha Ha! I even have "Olias of Sunhillow" by Jon and "Beginnings" by Steve, as well as a multitude of Ricks work. Check out Jon's vocals on King Crimson's "Circus" album...phenomenal!
@skinboneybud Its true. KTA is overdubbed to correct and strengthen what was a --not all that great recording of the band getting to know each other again. I was there.
Nothing will EVER beat Yessongsversion of this AMAZING peie of art. If only, if ONLY they had decent recording equipment in those days- If ONLY!! But, Steve's playing is superior in Yessongs Im afraid.
@skinboneybud I saw them at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C. on April 4 and I was impressed how Benoit sounded just like Jon Anderson...they didn't play And You And I, but did a great Close To The Edge.
so glad a. friend of mine back in mid seventies had me listen to his collection. On vinyl ! Then they came to Philly in '79 in the round, my first concert and I was blown away. I've seen many different groups live including the Who. Entwhistle and Squire are my top two I've ever seen. Anyone thinking AWBH's version of this song is better than one WITH Chris Squire is in my opinion not possible. Chris IS Yes. His melodic background vocals and musicianship are what pull it all together, in my opinion. I've only seen ABWH on video and one thing I noticed is they don't even show the bass player in their video of this song. I don't mean to take anything away from AWBH as they were excellent in their own right.
as a young guy growing up in 73. this song carried me, and kept me, afloat throughout the toughest of times....
Yes...impeccable, untouchable, the greatest music ever recorded by virtuosos never to be duplicated. YES will be played for the next 100 years.
You’re wrong. Yes will be played for hundreds of years. It will be seen in the way we admire classical music.
Hari
Exactly, it is the next face of classical music. The old died with the avantgarde music.
It will be played for thousands of years until the world ends
Michael Barbados ..not for the next 100 years..it's the best contemporary and progresive English rock band. The best voice, just like a charubine Jon Anderson, of course, says it all. I agree.

I saw them in Melbourne in 2003 - when Steve did the slide in And You And I, I thought it was the best music I had ever heard :)
Always loved this song ! Awesome, either Live or Studio !
It's all outstanding, I just find that the studio version doesn't have the emotion in the vocals that the live versions do

This was in my truck for a year....love these CD's! The studio tracks are solid as well! Last really good YES CD,in my opinion.
Oh My oh my..they are right!--THIS IS THE BEST!! VERSION!!!
No way!!!!!!!!! Not even close. This version is weak! The versions from 1973, 1974, 1977, 1979 make this sound like garbage.
Estoy atado sentimentalmente a todas las versiones de esta magnífica canción !!!!

PERFECT MUSIC MADE BY GODS
one of my 5 greatest bands ever and ones the beatles tough criteria!
Totally agree, the highest emotional
The drumming is my favorite part. It slaps and rocks madly.

This is the one I'm talking about: ruclips.net/video/k6Sp3U5mIUc/видео.html
this is a good version!
Esa cancion tiene 40 años me acompaño estudiando en la universidad,yo he envejecido, pero and you and i no
YEAH 'YES' WAS VERY GOOD FEEL GOOD -TAKE A TRIP -TRAVEL MUSIC-kinda like where pat methaney can take you (so to speak)def catering to a mature audience of sorts and musicians alike-my first YES album yes Tales..and people told me if you can get into Tales you can get into anything yes has done (lol)..i still have Alan Whites drum sticks from the Detroit 2 in a row concerts/Cobo Hall '76 -seeing that Crab on stage actually scared me at first- they opened w/Siberian-WHAT A GREAT AZZ CONCERT
completely agree with the description
Yes is the greatest band ever, but the Yessongs version is significantly better - much more intensity and excitement. Probably due to them being younger and more vibrant back then. Just a rabid Yes fan opinion.
Yessongs is the greatest live recording in history. In many cases they surpass the studio pieces, which is totally mind blowing when you think of the complexity and grandeur of YES.
Yessongs version My Fav 2!!!
Being able to watch them play close to the edge on the yessongs album in their Prime is truly amazing . Close to the edge was a brilliant album I wish Siberian khatru was on the live video
ABWH : An evening of yes music plus was also a very good recording/concert!
i don't know if i would call this the best live version ever
when aliens visit thousands of years from now, the only thing we need in our collective time capsule is the music of yes...
Excellent version... I agree...
This is a very good version! Thanks for the post!
Yes the version from Yessongs is awesome, Steve uses the double-necked SG on that one and the electric 12 string is so crisp
Grande performance Musica di altri mondi ,grande Steve howe, ion Anderson,Rik hakeman ,Cris Squire,Alan White
I saw this show twice and IMHO this was the best performance YES has ever done. 2nd best for me was ABWH, another incredible show.
This show in 1996 is not even within 1,000,000,000,000 light years of their best show.
beautiful!
Wow! Ommmmmmm......
This is very good
Excellent version!!
ABWH is better
No harmonica either :(
Oh Wait a minute here, Anyone who thinks THIS VERSION is the Best Live or otherwise, lend your ear to what IS the VERY HEAVENLY BEST & LIVE VERSION of this Song and ALL the others too here: ruclips.net/video/k6Sp3U5mIUc/видео.html
THE REAL YES
Those happy 5 guys gave us licence to explore.
this is a good version! excellentebravo, musicolongalosto!
I've seen Jon Anderson open a show singing nou Somme do solidly to say it was spell binding was something else and the show at kings dock Liverpool best concert I've ever been to Jon Anderson is tops just like Mr squire and rest may yes live on
Nous somme du soleil. At least TRY to get it right
this song takes us back to what music was like before our generation made it all about sex and drugs... i hate what we've done to it.
Get to see this in 7 days live. ARW.
a ardent Yes fan, this a good track
I wish wakeman started the solo in that first part in the higher octave. Geoff downes does that and I love it
@TacomaPaul
They didn't do this in 1976. They opened with a small part of The Apocalypse From And you And I. You must mean 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977 or 1979. The lights were on hanging spines In The Round 1978 and 1979, but no And You and I in 1978. but the clouds going by might be 1977. The vertebrae tour is 1974 and 1975.
great
R.I.P. Chris
Po prostu zaje**ste!
Thats is amazing! Beutiful!
I would have to say the Union tour 1991 version of this from the shoreline amphitheatre California was the best ever the 8 of them just put so much effort into that version that night this is good but just dont have the 8 of them sound to it
Well whatever, I just like to enjoy all of Yes`music (:
EXACTLY! 123! Others should stop picking which is the best & enjoy EVERY version... Can any be categorized as "not as good"??
La mia band preferita del progressive rock
Want immortality? Just be better than 99.9% of the people who play your instrument (in Jon's case, his angelic voice) and get in a band with people of the same caliber. Then create and record the best music of the century you're in, that's all. There's hardly any 'luck' in the equation, at least back in those days. There's a *LOT* of hard work involved, though.😊 Yes will go down as one of the best bands ever.
And the rubric is right on, Sage.
@studentjohn36
Ha Ha! I even have "Olias of Sunhillow" by Jon and "Beginnings" by Steve, as well as a multitude of Ricks work. Check out Jon's vocals on King Crimson's "Circus" album...phenomenal!
Tight.
@skinboneybud
Its true.
Totally agree...yessongs was better on so many levels they were absolutely cooking live at that time...even though there was no brufford... :)
I 100% agree with you. The Yessongs renditions of Perpetual Change and Yours is No Disgrace are perhaps the best versions of any song ever!
@skinboneybud
I saw them at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C. on April 4 and I was impressed how Benoit sounded just like Jon Anderson...they didn't play And You And I, but did a great Close To The Edge.
Check out the "Chicago of Heaven" bootleg version. The sound quality is not the best, but it's by far my favorite performance of this number.
No Way.... ABWH Live is the best! Hands Down!
I think people want to stick up for Chris but I don't think there's any comparison- ABWH that's now on RUclips is way better.
Agreed!!
so glad a. friend of mine back in mid seventies had me listen to his
collection. On vinyl ! Then they came to Philly in '79 in the round,
my first concert and I was blown away.
I've seen many different groups live including the Who. Entwhistle
and Squire are my top two I've ever seen.
Anyone thinking AWBH's version of this song is better than one WITH Chris Squire is in my opinion
not possible.
No way! On ABWH you can hardly hear the pedal steel. 1973, 1974, 1977 and 1979 are the best versions. no contest!
