      I have a suggestion: Tone down the self-deprecating jokes. A little deprecation makes the videos self-aware but don't forget you're a great artist! Also, too much of that can distract from the lesson itself, which is why we are here in the first place. A little more confidence would go a long way 😉

      @@smileys462 Thanks for the suggestion!
      I'll try to tone it down a bit, especially for educational videos!

    A tip I learned myself:
    Don’t be afraid to change sketchbooks, even if they’re not completed. If the shape, paper or anything else about it bothers you, go start a new one, you can always come back to it and finish it later. I had a 2 month old artblock because I hated the shape of my sketchbook so much (Also staying inside for too long), I only recently changed it and I feel much better and am drawing much more. It was a gift so I felt pressured to use it, and it held me back.
    If you don’t like it, changed it and you can fix it later. Do whats good for you and your art :)

    I- this is honestly the first time I’ve heard of sketchbooks being taken this seriously. All I’ve done for the past 15 years have just been drawing on any paper I can get my hands on and filing them together when I can. I’ve probably drawn on more lined or scratch paper in my life than an actual clean page, let alone nice art paper, let alone a whole SKETCHBOOK.
    Admittedly, I had some nice notebooks I barely used because the prettiness and blank pages were intimidating. It felt like I had to put my more refined stuff on there when in reality I would end up making my best stuff as I practice to refine my stuff on the lined or scratch paper I usually use. I’m a little more hesitant to show off my art (or consider turning into an income stream) as a consequence of mostly using lined or scratch paper but for the purposes of actually drawing, what I have has brought me far from my early days (although admittedly it would be hard for an adult to not be better than a 5 year old 😅). So I guess what I’m trying to say is: don’t ever tell yourself that you can’t practice art because you can’t afford a nice sketchbook to dedicate to your art. Draw with what you have, maybe make a scrap book out of it, maybe do something else. The important part is the practice and exploration of ideas.

    Lmao, I just decided 5 mins before this notification that I was good at art. I told myself that art is what you make it and it doesn't matter if other people don't like it because it isn't for them. So to anyone else who is going through this:
    If you can make a circle, oval, line or a DOT, you are amazing at art! You put whatever you were feeling onto that paper and drew whatever you were feeling, felt like, or wanted to draw. WHO CARES IF OTHER PEOPLE DONT THINK IT LOOKS GOOD! They are just jealous because you are probably drawing better than they were at that age! If they don't draw, but they have something to say: IGNORE THEM! It may be hard at first, but you just have to understand that they don't know what it's like when you get a sketchbook for the first time, put a pencil on a piece of paper and stare at your thoughts or dreams come to life! They don't understand what that feels like! Only you do! It's a feeling that only YOU can feel and experience. You also have to understand that the same way you feel about art, is the same way they feel about whatever they love, so if anyone is going to question anyone, you should. Ask yourself:
    Why do I love art?
    Why does art make me happy?
    Why do I draw?
    Why is art a part of my life?
    Why do I smile while making art?
    Why do I feel attached to this piece of art?
    Why does art matter to me?

    I'm only a 13 year old 8th grader, but I kind of have this 'dream' of being able to go to an art college/university where I could become a professional and meet other people like me that I can be friends with. I'm trying to learn animation and digital art right now. But, I see a lot of art youtubers say that they regretted going to art school, an that they said that it made them not want to draw anymore.
    Personally, I kind of feel the opposite, since I feel more motivated to do things if I actually have a reason to do it, but still, watching those videos are making me second guess myself. I know I'm still really young, and have a lot of things to look forward to, but I still think about these things and take them seriously since I know that my future depends on it.
    Sorry if this comment was really random. I really love your personality and art style a lot. (also, I love your hair so much). I hope to one day be as good at art and laid back as you are! :D

    • @PricklyAlpaca
      @PricklyAlpaca  4 года назад +17

      If you wanna go to art school, go for it, follow your dreams 💕
      Just remember that you don't have to have an art degree to become a professional artist. You really just have to have a good portfolio and a lot of the learning side of an art school experience can be replicated online. I only really say this because art school is super expensive. The amount of money you make as an animator isn't usually enough to pay off student loans, so make sure you do your research and have a plan! Scholarships are definitely a possibility :3 And before you attend an art school, learn as much as you can on your own and from the internet! You'll need a good portfolio and sketchbook to get in as well.
      A lot of artists I know definitely think their art school experience was worth if for the friends and business contacts they met, so that's definitely a big reason why a lot of people go.

    Tip: if you don't want to draw on the other side of the page, you can just glue in random doodles on scraps of paper(or sticky notes) to fill space

    I'm still e beginner in drawing and stuff so my sketchbook really is not presentable because sometimes I really have a bad day and can't draw anything decent and it is intimidating seeing all the sketchbook tours with gorgeous and finished art. But it's just a great way to keep your art and then see the progress, I can see so much progress even tho I have bad days and that keeps me going.

    In 2016 I made a sketchbook using grid paper. EVERYTHING bleeds through it, the pages aren't aligned, and even pencil ghosts through. It is my favorite sketchbook by far! No matter what I draw, it would never be perfect due to the inherent terribleness of the sketchbook. Which is honestly really freeing????!? I still keep a nice sketchbook, but I use the terrible one more.

    I’m a considerably new artist. I’d say that I don’t have things like anatomy down or expressions etc. I’m always at a loss for drawing what I want to draw and practicing drawing. It sounds counter intuitive, because every drawing I make is some sort of practice, right? But if I’m drawing what I want to draw, it’s usually fanart and then I’m just mimicking someone else’s style. It’s hard to decide where my learning begins and ends and how much time and space should be solely dedicated to studies. I want to improve but the Fangirl in me wants to draw whatever I want. I really just need to figure out my style somehow so I don’t feel like I’m ripping off of another artist. Any advice?

    • @masonkemper1793
      @masonkemper1793 4 года назад +9

      Maybe try using what you like as a way to incorporate studies? I don’t know if that makes sense. Like, take your fanart, but only focus on a specific thing to imitate. So say you wanna draw Naruto fanart. Try to reference the characters’ hands for example. Or if you like a live action show, search stills of the actors from the show and practice drawing them. You can do this with show backgrounds, too. My art teacher used to always say, “Draw what you see.” She encouraged us to always have a little sketch pad and to draw EVERYTHING, even the most mundane little things.
      With that being said, everyone grows in their own time, and I’m sure your art is great! Be sure to take breaks from drawing sometimes so you don’t get burned out, and remember, there’s no right or wrong way to draw.

    • @small_and_dangerous2068
      @small_and_dangerous2068 4 года назад +2

      Mason Patricia thank you for the advice!! I’ll try to do that! :)

    • @PricklyAlpaca
      @PricklyAlpaca  4 года назад +13

      I'd say draw whatever you want! Even if it means fanart! Even if it means drawing in the styles of artists you like.
      That's how style develops. It's a mishmash of the styles we gravitate towards and the genres we like to draw! So if fanart is what motivates you to draw, go for it! You're still practicing anatomy, expressions, composition, ect. When you make fanart :3
      I also really like the advice of beginning a study as a study and then turning it into fanart or original art! That's definitely a good way to stay motivated when focusing on the more technical aspects of drawing!

    I've got 2 really pretty sketchbooks, with a sort of pour paint style cover, yet I still prefer to use my lined subject notebook that was previously for my math notes and currently is slowly falling apart-
    Thank goodness one is 5 dollars and the other was a gift-
    And same with my pencils, I got 2 sets of pencils with the different thickness/types, and I when I draw I use that random pencil I found at the bottom of my backpack.
    The only thing I'm actually using are the alcohol markers I bought 3 days ago-
