@LavanderTowne Hi! I have a question. What do you use when drawing? (Digital) :)
Lavendertowne: **talking about picking colors that go well together**
Me, a colorblind artist: hmmm interesting
Maybe you can match with the colours that seem right to you then use em. It would be interesting to see and a really cool art icon thing that tells people that it was you who did it.
@@unimear I totally agree with this person, if you do that I think you're art will look really different and cool
Honestly, I find value to be more important than color anyway. If you can turn your drawing/painting to grayscale, and it still reads and looks right, with lights and darks, then your colors will probably look fine together.
Colors tend to clash when they’re all super saturated and dark. So as long as you vary the saturation and lightness of your colors, you should be able to avoid clashing color palettes.
I hope that helps. 😊
@@TheNitpickChick My dad is colorblind and I just got an idea! I could make lineart and my dad could select colors he think would go well together. Then I color it myself, and we compare the two.
What form are you? Don’t have to answer if you do t wanna

Weird....
I just didn't know much about the transform tool lmao

Ikr? I thought it was one of the most used tools
I abuse the hell out of it during the sketch phase! Traditional art is so frustrating without it T-T
I always assumed it was cheating until I watched Drawfee and they often do it when something isn’t lined up right or the proportions are off.
One time I Accidentally put an Instagram filter over some of my art while trying to post it and immediately realized how much better it looked and I remember thinking “is this even legal?”
Dude do you have any idea how many people use the overlay layer when they don’t have a damn clue how to color? It ain’t cheatin’ it’s just using your resources. As long as you aren’t stealing art, you’re fine. ^^

I never knew that the transform tool was “controversial”? That thing has saved my life several times LOL
I know right? Not even just resizing and rotating, but if I’ve drawn something a little slanted or leaning too far in one direction the distort and skew functions can also come in very hand too
@@SpaceCase1701 ikr I use it so much
That's exactly why it's so controversial. There are a lot of people out there who prefer doing things the hard way. I'm not one of those people. The transform tool is especially useful in animation, when you're making a 3D background movement in a 2D workspace. You just break everything down into simple shapes, transform, and tween. (this really only works in vector mode) _It's such a cheat that it actually feels sinful..._

Unless youre stealing work, you cant really cheat at art.
or tracing lol
edit: I keep getting tagged with comments not understanding what I'm saying. not all, just some. for clarification, yes, tracing art and not posting it or having permission from the artist is ok, yes, tracing from your own work is ok too.
@Zayley Rahm i suppose thats fine, but its when you don't credit that it's "cheating"
@Zayley Rahm Tracing is a great tool for practice. I wouldn’t post any traced art, not without credit at least.
I see the people in these replies can't read. OP literally said "unless you're stealing" and people come with tracing and their reasoning is "stealing" (e.g not crediting). You guys do realize that tracing can be done without stealing or even using someone elses art entirely, right? And don't get me started at how stupid it is to scream "cheating" in art when art literally has no rules. Like, don't steal and don't be disrespectful towards other people. Other than that, every artist can do whatever they want with their art. People claiming that they can't and think they're entitled to boss others around are just really petty.
@HanHanPlayz First of all, I'm sorry if I came off as rude. Secondly, my words weren't aimed directly at you but at the people starting this chain with just throwing something in here to bash it despite the OP already saying to not steal. As I said, my initial comment wasn't aimed at you specifically, even though I don't agree with you on your point. I don't think Cheating in art exists and I think it's petty to enforce the idea of Cheating in art on others. Theft is an entirely different matter but I do believe it's common sense not to steal. Theft is theft and therefore bad. But it's not cheating because art doesn't have rules. I'm honestly just tired of people spreading their venom under good comments. And as I said, that wasn't directed at you^^ So, sorry if it came off as if I was trying to attack you, I wasn't.
Your comment about "some artists judge art by how difficult it was to make" really hit home with me. I've been a purely traditional artist all my life now and there's a lot of things that just take forever to do traditionally, whereas a digital artist would only take minutes. I was always so proud of myself for doing it anyway and doing it the HARD way and I always felt like that was kinda worth more - when really all it meant was that I was making my life harder than it needed to be.
I finally got myself a pentablet this year and while I still struggle with that mindset, there's so many little shortcuts I already use and it feels great that I can now put my energy towards other details of my art. It really was a lifechanger and I've found myself actually drawing and doodling a lot more again because it just seems a lot less punishing than pen and paper where you can't always erase a line anymore.
The color palette trick:
Me, who always struggles with finding the perfect colors: *You just saved my life*
I just wing it or monochrome everything other than skin and eyes. I’ll be using the color palette now..
Man I used to just pick random colors and hope for the best lol

About the “feels like cheating” thing....Why is everyone so adamantly against making their own life easier? Like do you enjoy wasting your own time or...
Edit: Woah okay this kinda blew up. Just to clarify: It's fine if you want to have a steadier hand to make things easier in the long run, but you can practice those skills in your sketchbook. When doing art for school, work, or just doing a more complicated drawing, work smarter, not harder. Kinda like how you might wanna learn mental maths, but use a calculator for more complicated problems.
A good artist would use every tool available to them in order to make their art look the way they want. Too much gatekeeping going on these days...
i think the mindset of it goes something like, "the harder it is, the more rewarding it feels at the end."
From what I've seen this comes from a mindset that the amount of skill that is put into a work is what makes it good.
I fricken love wasting my time are you kidding me
@@daredrogers3884 Art is subjective to the viewer, as well as the artist. If an artist can make something they are satisfied with, that should be the only thing that matters. Personally, I don't care what the medium is if the end result is something beautiful and a piece the artist is proud of.

I LOVE sketching on paper, but I hate coloring it, so I just sketch it (sometimes fine line it), take a pic and airdrop it on my tablet, works great!
You can even sketch over that traditional sketch and move it around, highly recommend this technique!

You know, because she's a queen?
Good job peep.

here- you dropped this 👑
frankly i don’t think any method of speeding up your work is a cheat, they’re just the tools you use
Your color palette tip just changed my life!
Yeaaaaaaaaah we need to stop using this “Using the tools the program comes with BY DEFAULT” is considered cheating. Artists who think that and try to impose their thinking and will on other artists are just sour or have become bitter because they wasted hours and even years to do complex looking pieces when others took the time to learn what the tools do and use them to the full potential and make equally as beautiful pieces that look complex in a fraction of the time.
"ART SHORTCUTS THAT FEELS LIKE CHEATING"
me:wait..theres cheats in arts??
Other than tracing others works when they didn’t allowed you to, and using base without crediting, I guess their isn’t much.

Hello fellow procreate user 👋
QueenØfTrash. Same! Lol
I feel like my art has been better quality since I switched from ibispaint to Procreate
I find it harder to clean up art in ibispaint
@@YouKnowImOnMyPeriodYah Same,
I swapped from ibisPaint to Procreate this year and am SO GLAD I did because I find it so much better, I’m not very good at describing stuff but I just find Procreate a lot easier for me to use, still learning new things everyday!
I wish you the best on you future artistic endeavours!!
meanwhile i'm still trying to get around the fact that people actually name their layers :/
Lmao same I only name folders and that's only if I'm drawing a picture with more than 2 people lol
Usually the only layer I'll name is the lineart layer, and that's only so I don't accidentally colour on it
people who make a million layers & don't name them... why do you hate yourselves so much

Thank you for this. I am slowly working towards that mindset. in my eyes, my life is 'too short' to spend a little tooooooooo long trying to learn something or even if I CAN do it, to do it again manually. I'm not tracing, I'm not stealing someone else's work, this is technological efficiency as we progress as human society, I'm gonna adapt.
please do more illustrations like this where u dedicate a whole video on it. srsly love them so much🥺❤️ keep up the great work!!
I don’t know if I’m going to feel as satisfied if it feels like cheating, but thank you for the new content
chile it’s not rlly cheating but ok
Only _some_ people see it as cheating. You may share your art with others, but at the end of the day you are mainly making it for yourself. By all means, use (or don't use) any tools at your disposal, at your discretion 😁
I'm so glad you have playlists of your videos because it's so relaxing to listen/watch your videos while drawing
I know you won't see this but you actually inspired me to start making a comic. I kept thinking that I won't be able to draw all I want to but you kinda gave me the inspiration to just get it started so I can learn as I go.
A thing that feels like cheating is tracing your own art, wether it’s digital or traditional qwq
It's technically "tracing" when you ink your sketched lines. Don't limit yourself 😁
Yeah I'm terrible at anatomy in digital so I do my sketches traditionally if I plan on digitalizing it
I often have trouble with digital art due to my program being quite limited (I have a very old laptop, I can't run programs such as Krita :(), so I usually sketch traditionally, and ink & colour it digitally.
I've been tracing my own art for years, especially since I use markers and have to put my sketch into lineart on thicker paper/no eraser Mark's.Ive seen traditional artists use light boxes and tracing their sketch so apparently it's super common
Tracing helps you learn. Remember tracing the letters of the alphabet when you were a kid? Yea, same difference. It's only cheating when you take others' artwork and pass it as your own.
Omg! That colour picking tip is so helpful!! I often struggle with picking colours, so I am really glad you shared it!!
Imagine missing a Lavendertowne upload. Couldnt be me. 😌

Same here!
@@scheheherazadem.3802 no need! You can still make amazing masterpieces on paper! :)
There's no such thing as cheating in art. The only thing that matters is the end product. It's absolutely ridiculous to think otherwise.
There is definately cheating in art. You cheat in a test to get the answers quickly without studying, you didn't learn it, you just went the easy route. Same with art, if you do not have the patience or discipline to learn anatomy or practice symmetry. Yeah your digital art looks nice now but if you took all the tools away and tried to draw without undo's and or anything, your content wouldn't look nearly as good, because you never learned how to do it properly
@@cupcakemcsparklebutt9051 Yes, they mostly draw digitally but that doesnt mean they never started on paper. Most digital artist usually go between paper and a tablet (from what ive seen online/in real life) just so they know their skills are wearing down over time. That’s just my take on it though
@@cupcakemcsparklebutt9051 But art is all about your personal expression and what you, the artist, wants to show. In a test it’s completely different, that’s about memory recall and/or interpreting text or data. Digital art is a perfectly valid form of art, so saying ‘if you took all of a digital artist’s tools away and made them draw on paper their art wouldn’t be good!’ is like saying ‘if you took a pencil away from a traditional artist and made them do sculpting their art wouldn’t be good!’ because they’re different forms of art,and no one has to be good at a specific type of art to be classed as a valid artist.
‘Cheating in art’ would be like if you traced someone else’s work and claimed it was yours, not using the tools available to you to make your art the way you want it. It doesn’t matter if someone never learnt anatomy and symmetry, if they like the way their art comes out, or enjoy making it, or put time and effort into it, they are a perfectly valid artist and have not ‘cheated’ just because they didn’t learn the same way others might have done. Even if it means their art isn’t as good as it could be, or wouldn’t be so good in other forms, that’s not relevant. It’s still not ‘cheating’.
Art isn’t something like maths, where you have to learn all the correct formulae and there is just one right answer and only one or two ways of working something out. As long as your art is YOUR art, and you haven’t traced or stolen it, then you have not ‘cheated’. You have used the tools available to you to make the best final piece in a way that you enjoy, and that’s what matters. It doesn’t matter if your art wouldn’t look as good in a different media, because that’s not the way you chose to express yourself. Having a different way of making your art does not equal ‘cheating’.
Omg yes the transform tool!!! It’s literally a lifesaver especially for people like me who cant draw things on big canvases and have to zoom in!!!!! It’s sooooo useful!!!!

Some of these tricks are also doable with traditional too! Just with more effort.
Copy past flip horizontal -tracing paper/transfer paper
Masking layers - masking tape to cover the areas you don't want to cover
*when you get crappy masking tape and it rips the paper*
I'll never use technigal graphic masking tape for art again XD
