  • EP.1 of building out the 2022 Ford Maverick XLT Ecoboost FX4 4k into an overland truck camper!
    In this episode we take a look at the stock Pirelli Scorpion ATR tires that come on the FX4 package, and put them through several light offroad tests to get a grasp of their capability off the pavement. We then swap the tires to a new set of Pirelli Scorpion A/T PLUS all terrain tires and run them through the same tests, and the results are NIGHT AND DAY.
    Changing the tires to a more capable option, especially one with some sidewall tread, really opens up the full potential of this little truck and makes a world of difference.
    I really hope you enjoy the video, and if you do let me know in the comments and consider subscribing so you don't miss the rest of this build!

    My experience with all terrain tires has been it’s usually not worth the install unless you daily or weekly trails. You lose out on so much dry asphalt performance: breaking, accelerating, & feel/sound. Not to mention all terrains can be $100-400 more/set. They do look cool though 😎

    • @MrVictoria69
      @MrVictoria69 Год назад +2

      Totally agree with you. 99% of the trucks out there with these huge lug tires will never see anything but pavement. It really looks kinda dumb for sure. But the Scorpion plus looks about a good balance.

    Thanks for the video. FYI the truck you tested is slightly different than the standard AWD. The standard AWD doesn't come with AT tires. Also if you get the 4K tow package like the one in the video it has a different gear ratio from 3.63 to 3.81. i have read that on the xlt if you order p235 AT they put on falcon wildpeaks AT3. Unfortunately i dont know if thats true. I did upgrade my tires on the FX4 which also comes with aluminum wheels p235 but i haven't taken delivery yet, so i will find out soon enough.

    Most of us bought this for the fuel mileage and the more aggressive tread you go will result in up to 4mpg less mileage. i know it happened to me 26 to 22 mpg.

    • @ckwoutdoors
      @ckwoutdoors  Год назад +1

      It's true that more aggressive tread eats away at furl economy. However with the new tires I've only lost about 1 mpg and am still averaging 25 which is mostly city. A few highway drives I've done so far resulted in about 27-28 mpg. I bought the truck for its fuel economy too, but also as an adventure rig so it is really a great combination for me.

    • @Christian-kj4ox
      @Christian-kj4ox Год назад

      It also depends on the tire weight, a lot of true ATs are heavier because they have more threads, and a sturdier build than most non AT tires. You can swap true ATs on the maverick and face barely any MPG loss but if you switch to 50lb KO2s; yea you’ll see a bit mpg hit

And think at3 are more at snowflake tread better patter mantaining the same weight. Slds

  • @mahinganatra978
    @mahinganatra978 Год назад

    How do the two tyres perform on normal good roads. Is there more tyre noise and lesser grip ? Or do you feel just as confident on the more aggressive tyres as well ?

    • @ckwoutdoors
      @ckwoutdoors  Год назад +2

      The stock ATRs perform great on road, even in wet conditions. No issues with them there at all. The new PLUS tires also handle great on the road. They don't have an insane tread like some other options out there so they still drive quite nice on pavement. Definitely some added road noise, but that's unavoidable with any true A/T tire that has some actual tread.

      I have a 2000 and 2019 Tacoma both have AT Scorpion Plus and I really enjoyed them! I drove into a one way trail at night with the slush/hard snow that was probably around 10 inches deep easy and although the truck went slowly. It did managed to go up the questionable slush/hard snow trail 4 miles uphill because there was just no way my truck was going to make it going backwards. I was obviously dumb in my decision but I was also damn happy that I didn't drive through the same scenario with my original stock oem because I would've been in real trouble. For my 2000 Tacoma, I have 285 and on my 2019 I have 265. It was my 2019 I drove into the snow with at midnight...lol. The AT Scorpion Plus does well on highway road and quite predictable...they are basically outperform the stock oem all seasons both on road and easily outperforms the stock oem off road anytime. Very manner road noise which I can really appreciate! From many reviews and usage, many agree that the ATR is pretty garbage and if you look around, you can get a real good deal with them. Walmart for examples has it for about $90 less per tires than what I would've gotten it if I purchased it elsewhere. It really pays to shop around. IMPORTANT NOTE....Make sure your tire pressure is set for what the tire is rated for or else! My tires are rated for 44 psi and I ran it at 32 psi as state for my Tacoma. Well, that didn't turn out well, every puddle on the highway that I ran over cause a slippage/slight lost of control which I was starting to worry. Went to the nearest gas station...pumped up those tires and it was light night and day. The reason I went with the Pirelli over the Falken or BFG is because of 1. Noise 2. Gas mileage 3. 90% of my travel are on highway road and occasional dirt.

    Will the Tremor be a way better off roader?

    • @ckwoutdoors
      @ckwoutdoors  Год назад +1

      The Tremor is definitely a sweet looking truck! It includes a 1 inch lift from factory, as well as the ability to lock it in 4wd which the FX4 doesn't have. Most importnatly though, it has the rear twin clutch locking diff that can push power individually to either wheel as needed which is a big improvement.
      I wouldn't say it'll be a WAY better offroader, since this is still a unibody Maverick, but itll certainly be a bit more capable straight from the factory than the FX4. As far as I know, the tires on the Tremor are the same ones though, so those may need to be swapped to unlock the true performance of the truck

    As mediocre as the tires are, they are a good choice for the FX4 being that most Mavericks will rarely leave the road. They can handle very light off road use and they are quite civil on road.
    They are just ok for sand and snow. They’ll serve the masses who buy Mavericks well. If you need more, buy more tire and/or vehicle to get more.
