Episode 2: The Stock FX4 Tires Must Go!

  • Ford pairs the Maverick FX4 package with Pirelli Scorpion ATR tires, which honestly aren't really the kind of rubber you want for any real adventures off the pavement. In this episode, Christian talks about the decision to make the switch from the stock 225/65/R17s to a set of 245/65/R17 Cooper Discoverer ATs. From an improved look to better ground clearance and dramatically improved off-road performance, there are a lot of reasons to consider getting rid of the stock tires and beefing up the shoes on your Maverick!

      It's honestly hard to believe those Pirellis are Ford's choice for the FX4 package. As I said in the video, they are probably a fine tire for driving on pavement, but there's nothing there to provide any kind of performance off road, and lots of owners say they are terrible in the snow too. I'm hoping I can sell the set I took off on FB Marketplace for $400.

      @@themaverickhntr For the hybrid I want to keep the tires as close to the stock weight as possible as not to kill my mpg and performance. I will be going with Firestone Destination A/T2. That's a great tire! I think any solid AT tire would work fine. I have an old, 2006 Escalade with AWD that I've been using as my hunting vehicle for the past several years. It does really well off road and I've just been running some Ironman ATs on that. The biggest thing is the tread pattern and compound. Granted, I like a good deal so couldn't pass up the Coopers I found, but if money were no object I might go with some Falken Wildpeaks or Maxxis. Still, I'm not sure that paying double for a tire really gets you double performance. I've had some really good luck with cheap, Goodyear all-season tires from Walmart on my family sedans.

    Ford has been using the Pirrelli Scorpions on the FX4 packages for quite some time. My 2014 F150 FX4 had them, and I know for sure they continue to do so. The coopers are a great choice

  • @scottg.5449

    I bought the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus (not the ATRs) for the F150 I bought this spring. The tread pattern on those is a lot more aggressive than the ATRs-I’m a little surprised they call those AT tires. I’m happy with them so far but I’ve only had them 2-3 months.
    I’m looking forward to your videos. I went with a F150 because I have 3 little kids to haul but would love to have a truck that gets the mpgs that the Maverick gets.

    I'm not a big fan of the ATR's on my FX4... On a rainy road trip to FL from NC the hydroplaning was getting out of hand. The truck would almost change lanes and that was after I slowed down quite a bit from normal speeds. I'm prolly not going to go to a true off road tire but will prolly go to Michelin Cross Climate 2. I replaced a set of Pirelli on our Sorento with the Cross climates and it solved the noise and wet traction issues I had on the Kia. Watched a bunch of tire reviews on the Tubes and the Cross Climate 2 wins most of the time

      There are a bunch of good videos out on the Tremor. It's a nice truck! Biggest thing that holds the Maverick back are approach and departure angles. Tremor improves that a bunch in the front (approach) but still ain't a monster truck by any stretch. However, the Maverick's AWD system is very good, and the dual clutch and electronic locker on the Tremor are great additions. The Tremor will take you lots of cool places, but just won't be able to handle crazy terrain due to the overall geometry of the vehicle and all the plastic on the rocker panels and bumpers. For the price, however, I don't think you can beat it!

    Do the new tires stick out any wider passed the fender wells/walls? Or are they pretty flush?

    • @themaverickhntr
      @themaverickhntr  Год назад

      Stock tires are 8.9 inches wide. The new tires are 9.6 inches wide. So, the tires likely stick out half that distance wider on each side, or .35-inch on the inside and .35-inch on the outside. It's a fairly small difference, but I also installed RokBlokz mud flaps that also provide protection outside the wheel well. So, they stop any any debris that would otherwise be thrown up by the tires onto the side of the truck.

    • @themaverickhntr
      @themaverickhntr  Год назад +3

      The gap? Not sure what you are asking, but I assume you want to know about clearance in the wheel well. There is plenty of room; no rubbing issues. As for the snow, I can't comment on that yet, because there is no snow on the ground and it's actually like mid-50s right now in Pennsylvania. I am not going to complain! I plan to do a follow-up video on tire performance soon. If we get a big snowstorm, I'll go out and drive around in it and post something.

    Yes, the speedo is off for speed, but more importantly having the speedo off affects the transmission and the shift points. Which long-term, can reduce the lifespan of the transmission. Still, totally like the look with the new tires. Merci

    • @themaverickhntr
      @themaverickhntr  Год назад +1

      I would like to think the transmission is basing shift point off RPMs and torque and not the number on the digital display. I'm not expert on computer programming transmissions, but I certainly am not going to lose any sleep over this. I've also tested the speedo with the new tires using my GPS and it's never off by more than 1 mph, MAYBE 2 TOPS. Again, does not seem significant to me.

    I put the same tire setup on mine back in Nov 21. Same tires, paid $107 each from Walmart. Slightly noisy but handle great in all weather. You need to do a 1.5 or 2 inch front level kit from Rangerlifts to get that front end up. Made so much difference in handling and looks. The rake of the stock truck sucks. My White XL truck was totaled out in Oct 22 by a drunk driver running from police. New White fx4 on order. I want the paint and frame protected before I start taking this thing in the snow, salt, sand, mud, etc.

    An FX4 sticker and some tires do not make that a “truck” I do like it…. For people who need to run to Home Depot. An “off road” package on this thing is just warranty repairs waiting to happen. It’s a front wheel drive car based vehicle.AWD is for snow,,,,till you burn out the viscous coupling anyway

    • @themaverickhntr

      There are plenty of videos out there proving the AWD on the truck is pretty capable. Clearance is the main thing that will limit the truck but with a 2-inch lift it'll do 90 percent of what I need. And I'm willing to sacrifice the remaining 10 percent for the size, fuel economy and overall value the Maverick offers.

No of course not. The speed rating means that your tire will be able to maintain 118 mph for at least and hour! Who and where could you possibly do this? It is just a rating that is required by the Feds I guess. So that nobody mounts these on a Bugatti that could do it on the Autobahn!

      Wow, I'd like to congratulate you on being the very first person to levy the highly original "not a real truck" criticism. I hope you'll stick around and follow future videos as I begin doing "truck stuff" with my fun little non-truck.

      Karen wants to speak to the manager because it doesnt have a body on frame lol and has a unibody design. Must be a woke Chevy fan jealous they Chevy doesnt have a smaller TRUCK. Or maybe just too poor to afford one? thats probably what it is because otherwise they wouldnt have to hate on it.
