      @@xskrymNah, he gives the throttle full beans just before hitting the deck and you can hear the engines wind up just as he hits. And then of course the massive deceleration…

      @@PN_48 Not for acceleration. FMP on landing in case the wire's missed and he has to bolter. It's done for every fixed wing landing.

      @@cynicaloldguyThanks - I know why they go to FMP as they land. What I’m saying is as a result of throttle increase, you can see AC start to accel and wind up just as he hits the deck.
      Very cool.

    It's crazy how much the F-18 pilot is jockeying the throttles back and forth. It's like he's cycling from max power to idle a couple of times every couple of seconds

      Its because jet engines take time to spool up and down after a power change.
      On approach you manage touchdown pount with throttle and airspeed with gravity.
      This means the throttle needs constant inputs. It's very intuitive. He probably wouldn't even notice hes doing it like that until wathing this vid either.watching

      A friend of mine was a Navy pilot. He said that for his first carrier landing, he looked down at the ship and thought "There's got to be some mistake. No way I'm gonna land on that little speck in the ocean". But he got used to it.

    Frankfurt an alternate for Manchester? I know Darragh was a big storm but that seems like an overlong divert. Wonder if the time of night and restrictions at other alternatives played a part?

      You don’t know what the weather conditions were in other places. I’m sure they had a good reason to pick Frankfurt. Probably likely that there was a fresh crew in Frankfurt.

      All of the UK airports capable of 777 were also having the same winds because the storm was massive. Also btw this was around 6am not night time

      3100 miles Abu Dhabi to Manchester, 500 miles diverted to Frankfurt: piece of cake divert in a 777.

    A 3MoA video is a nice way to close up my Birthday today. 😁And it was amazing! 😄Especially the Carrier landing was so cool! 😄
    As for the Etihad, I personally agree with Frankfurt as the possible "safe option" for the alternate (even though it looks odd to back off to an airport that is about 1 hour flight time away from Manchester at first). The closer possible larger airports (the London ones, or maybe Birmingham) would have been a gamble too as you never know how bad the storm would be there at that point. Plus, there may have been a fresh crew ready there. 🙂 Better safe than sorry! 🙂

    Honestly its amazing to me that a 777 can carry enough spare fuel to make it all the way from Manchester to Frankfurt.

      @@kevindigo22actually now that I think of it, the alternative airport has to be far enough away so that the weather would be different. Heathrow is next door, same weather, whilst Frankfurt is a different neighborhood

    0:43: How do we tell from the cockpit layout that the aircraft is an F/A-18 E or F (flown by the US Navy) and not an F/A-18 C or D (flown by the US Marine Corps)?

      This is a super Hornet (E/F). Below the hud is the UFCD which is a touch screen display. A Hornet would have buttons there. Near the pilot’s left knee is the EFD or Engine and Fuel Display which is a screen that shows engine and fuel data. The Hornet has something different there to show the data

      What ya mean - it's summer solstice. The day where there is a time where only 1% of the worlds population is in daylight. (There's a few minutes after sunset on the Western Coast of North America before Sunrise in East Asia, so only the Pacific Ocean, all of Antarctica and Eastern Australia are in the Sunlight.)

    As for the Ethiopia, She personally agree with Fruits. As the possible "safe options" for the alternative (Even though she looks odd to even off to an aeroplane that is about 1 hour sight. Time away from Manchester. At first.) The closer possible largest airports. The London ones, or maybe Brahmaputra) would have been a grumble too. As she never knows how the bad aerostorm. Would be there at the last point. Plough. She may have been a freshcrew. Ready there. 😢 Better soft than a sorry.😮

      Bristol is probably worse as it sits on the edge of an escarpment facing into the prevailing south Westerlies. Manchester is bigger and gets larger aircraft and more drama so more plane spotter.
      There is plenty of wild video from Bristol recently for Storm Darragh when we had 80mph winds.

      Leeds/Bradford is the highest airport in the UK and a sits atop of Otley Chevin on the edge of the Pennines. It frequently has issues with the wind and low cloud base.

    This was a weird one.
    Don't understand why the Austrian Airlines flight didn't follow thru on landing.
    F-18 carrier landing was actually pretty scary. Navy pilots are awe-inspiring.
    The Etihad flight? Why did it have to go to an alternate after two attempts? And why was its alternate so far away?
    L-39 canopy loss - either the pilot failed to close it properly (unlikely - he would have noticed) or the ground crew needs to get in BIG trouble.

      For Austrian, the decision to abort was made before it touched down. Obviously they felt unstable to continue.
      Most airlines require their pilots to go to their alternate after 2 go arounds.
      So far away for multiple reasons. Mostly, because it had good weather. Probably had a fresh crew in Frankfurt as well.
      The L-39, what ground crew? It’s probably a owner/operator. We don’t know what happened, but the pilot not securing the canopy isn’t that far fetched.

    Flight didn't follow. Throughout landing.
    FC- 18 Championships. Was actually pretty dynamic.
    Nightingales pilots are awe- inshared.

    L-64 Canopy weight loss - either the pilot failed to close it properly. (Unfortunately - She would have to be noticed) On the background crew needs to get into BIG trouble.

    Man, the Rhino pilot really let the ball drop out from under him! He was high and went to Mil with like 3-4 seconds of ball flying left and it still kept falling. Paddles definitely gave him a hard power call.

      If the weather is similar at a Liverpool and East Mids (or in this case any UK airport) then the decision will be made to divert to where the weather is better.

      All aircraft have their alternate configured in the flight plans before take off. Because Manchester was being affected by the storm so would Liverpool, East Midlands, Birmingham etc.
