  • "Good tattoos ain't cheap, cheap tattoos ain't good." I've heard this A LOT throughout my years of collecting tattoos. Now as a tattoo artist, I say it all the time to people that try to low ball me.
"Well I got a buddy who can do it for cheaper." Well then go to him and I'm sure he'll give you the Hepatitis for free. The sad truth is that Scratchers do exist and they genuinely think they are doing nothing wrong.
In this video we talk about what scratchers are why they aren't good for the industry or for your health. Let me know in the comments if you have a Scratcher Tattoo!

I did tattoos more similar to scratcher tattoos as a teenager when stupider(single use tattoo needle and real tattoo ink so not as bad as some using needles and pen ink at home but definitly not clean sterile conditions on my bed and using a pencil and tape to hold the needle, no gloves, no barriers, nothing. But them holding up and me doing good solid lines and enjoying the process made me get even more interested in doing it properly and now i have a real machine and cartridges and just do it on fake akin for now and i do olan on doing a few on myself once i find somewhere to apprentice. I want my first professional tattoos on skin to stay with me forever.

Okay so I feel like I'm opening myself up to be trolled/flamed but I really want to hear some opinions. My main job is as a surgical technologist, we are the sterility warriors of the operating room. We have gone through extensive training on sterility, microbiology, pathophysiology and, of course, as you mentioned, blood-borne pathogens. We know how to establish and maintain a sterile field as well as sharps safety and disposal. We also receive education on wound care and healing. Now, that being said, I tattoo myself, no one else but have zero formal training on it. I've watched RUclips videos on beginner tattooing and have a thorough understanding of needle depth and where the ink is going. Would you consider me a scratcher or something else?

Do tattoo artists hate scratchers because of the reasons you mention or is it because they cut into professional artists profits?

Just came from another video on this subject. I appreciate how open minded you come across, I guess ill stop embracing the term scratcher, and from now on consider myself self-taught without a license. Ive taken a phlebotomy course in the past and know about BBP and PPE, and try to follow the same sort of practices that i would be following if i were drawing blood, but my technique could use some help. I have taken all art electives in high school and college, and retained some knowledge on elements and principles of art but do you have any recommendations for resources on learning on your own? Im not too keen on jumping into color, i feel starting out focusing on black and grey american traditional would be best suited for my direction.
Oh and as for your question in the video, i only tattoo on myself, my left leg is full of mostly stick and pokes but i recently bought a machine and am filling in the gaps. Mostly linework, because im inept at shading but im starting to practice shading on smaller pieces, so far its so-so. Im glad i started tattooing after i gained some knowledge on art in school though, thats for sure.

Depends on alot of things that i will not get into wether at a shop or at house check portfolio and equipment period and it depends on what inks you order some inks ive seen on amazon around 50 to 70 dollars has natural ingrediants in it lol

The majority of professional tattoo artists do NOT buy their supplies from Amazon. It’s not regulated.

Trust me bro,I know really good artists that are not scratchers cause they don’t have a shop and such. That’s just BS nowadays. Tattooing tutorials are all over the internet to help make a self taught a great artist and some of the top artists now are self taught artists. Not everyone is a messy artist working from home. It’s all about sanitary equipment, area, and quality art work. I think location should be an understanding between client and artist as long as there’s cleanliness and consent forms signed. You’re right there is a difference between self taught and scratchers. I can also say that some so called licensed professionals suck as artists to be labeling someone who is unlicensed!😂
