  • The question is AM I A SCRATCHER???
In todays video I will be letting you know my current situation and what is to come for me and my business!! 🤘 I hate the word scratcher as it's a derogatory word for a person who doesn't tattoo out of a professional shop. "Scratchers" come in all different forms, from those who see this as a hobby and those who are trying to make this a profession for themselves. We will also be packing up the old shop and moving to our NEW and improved location where I can now start the process of getting my shop licensed!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘 I thank all of you for all your support and kind words. I wish all of you the best on your journey and Keep ROCKING!!!!!
Hope you all enjoyed the video and if you did give it up a thumbs up and consider subscribing!!
I like to remind people that In no way am I a fantastic tattoo artist guys. I just love tattooing but I am still on my journey and want to show you how its done so you can do it and do it better then me!! 🤘
So don't give up if you want it bad enough its yours for the taking!

I'm a new subscriber and a scratcher" from Missouri also. I've been tattooing for 10 years but with a full time constriction 40 hr job. Finaly been making time to do tattoos on people I know also. And past 2 years Finaly got to a point i do one to 4 tattoos a week so I got like 3 years combined. And I can't quit my full time job so unable to do an apprentiship at this time its my goal for 2020. To be legal in what I love to do and have loyal clients who only want my art. So I just stuck in between my job and tattoos on weekends. Or some evenings. And I do want just a little shop to call my own and just continue to do ink with meaning" I'm mobile also and some clients enjoy the privacy of their homes and its nice to socialize with friends and family. Your videos have helped me already and only seem a hand full this week. Every dime I make I invest into my equipment. And got a nice set up all ordered from Amazon. I just want to do what I love and learn more and not get in trouble at same time. Thank you and ill be in touch brother of art👊👍 if like you to look at some of my ink work and be a critic and honest opinion tks again

You are a good man teaching others for free. I’ve been tattooing for the last 8 years but with this economy almost everyone can’t afford a apprenticeship without pay I tried it for 6 weeks and got let go due to my full time job and couldn’t devote full weekends but some day I’ll get to do this full time

Thats coming with time I just started the process and there are a lot of moving parts. I am currently working with the EPA , I have my LLC and Insurance, I have all my basic stuff like CPR, BBP, First Aid. Once the EPA finishes there stuff I can get back to working with the health department to finalize things. SO its a little bit of a process and I will be sharing that as it develops. I will do an update video in a couple weeks as far as the legal goes. Hope this helps for now. And remember each state can be different this is just my state. Thanks for watching🤘🤘

There's been so many times I wanted to quit tattooing. I started out with a homemade machine, guitar string, my power supply was a motor from a train set, and Higgins drawing ink in 1995. I had only one person to learn from, and I had to learn, by mistakes and practice on myself for years. Through the mistakes, all the frustration, time, and effort, quitting wasn't what I was gonna do. Later on bought me some real equipment and practiced, read books, constantly drawing, ect. Here it is 2020, I'm still tattooing, I'm still learning, and I have about 3-4 hundred tattoos under my belt. And thanks to this channel I'm even more hungry to learn more. I took some techniques u have shown and slowed my tattooing down a bit and it makes a world of difference!! Thank You!!

Wow keith so cool to hear you never quit and that you kept up with it!! Thats determination and gritt!!!! And supper cool to hear your still chasing the dream and it sounds like your a short time away from making the dream come true. This is why I wanted to share my story cause I know there are some AMAZING artists out there doing awesome work but just dont really know how to go from there to a licensed shop. So I look forward to getting through the process and sharing that with people like yourself who deserve to be in their own shop. Thank you again Keith for the support and I cant wait for the day you let us know that your shop is opening up!!!! IT WILL HAPPEN brother stay the course and God Bless!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

My husband saw I had a desire and passion for the art of tattooing and pushed me to learn and start my journey. So on my search for videos to help me learn everything from the very basics and then more, I found your channel. In the short amount of time I’ve been watching, I’ve already learned so much! You’re an awesome mentor and great at explaining everything in detail. Thank you so much for all the help so far and I really want to say congratulations! Well I’m glad you found the video I’m glad you didn’t quit. Because scratcher is just a derogatory word for people who can’t tattoo well and those people are often the ones who tattoo out of their homes. But I think times have changed in the way we learn has changed where is nowadays you’re more like an at home tattooer. I am so thrilled that I found this channel. I was wanting to learn to do tattoos and so I bought some basic gear. But then I realized that information is either sparse, costly or confusing as ... So I became overwhelmed and put baby in a corner. I was waking up everyday thinking today is the day. But then I just meh. The other day however I found your channel and Yes! Finally, as one person in your comments put it, "a breath of fresh air"! The information is thorough and concise. Easy to follow and well made. Thank you! I actually started tattooing my fake skin last night and although I am not opening a tattoo shop anytime soon, I do have the drive and confidence to do more. I woke up this morning and I couldn't wait to get baby out the corner. As soon as I get some more black ink. Apparently my bro in law hijacked my ink while it was in the corner. And all I now have is a tiny bottle of yellow. Shame. THANKS AGAIN!

I wonder if tattooing is going to be illegal based on the covid 19 problem, no shop owner is going to allow the government to dictate when he can and can't conduct business while he foots the bill. But I am sure the shop owners haven't been doing a little scratching themselves in the past 5 months

    Congratulation on the new studio!
I would like to say that honestly I thought you were fairly transparent about your experience level as a tattoo artist right from the start.
    --Story time?
Around 3 or 4 years ago I wanted to take my illustration education and apply that in a more tattoo appropriate direction. I grabbed my most current sketchbook and portfolio and decided to visit some of my local establishments to ask questions. I was just looking for more guidance and direction and wanted to know what I should be doing to build an appropriate portfolio. I probably visited about 10 studios that day, and only one of them were nice to me. Nobody looked at my art, not even the nice studio. I was laughed at by a few, and mocked by other. One of them even said I wasn't pretty enough; I still can't figure out why my physical appearance would play a part in my abilities as an artist. Overall it was such a negative experience that I wanted absolutely nothing to do with tattooing or tattoo artists because I thought everyone in the industry was just an egotistical jerk.
I received a machine (just a cheep starter kit from amazon) as a holiday gift about two years ago. I also have a couple of friends who had gotten apprenticeships and so kind of have some idea about what to do just from watching them. I trust my friends, and it helped me be a little less judgmental because I know that my friends are not the same as my first real interaction with the industry. However I still held some animosity towards that and was still afraid of that association so I didn't want to play with my new medium.
Because of the worldwide situation I of course needed to occupy my time, so I bought some practice skins. Unfortunately I still only had a vague idea of what I should be doing. I tried going though some google research, and RUclips videos, and I just found so many of them to be contradictory to one another or they were unclear.
I've said it in a past video but the information you give and the way you present it is so valuable. You do not treat us (your audience) like we're stupid but you do give us very beginner friendly information. You clearly repeat your ideas while giving examples. You talk about exploring techniques trying different things very openly. Maybe it's because you are still growing and so a part of you still remembers what it was like (I don't know, I'm not you, and I can't speak for you), but it helps you be very approachable.
This was a very long winded way of saying thank you! Even if I never move beyond practice skins, or do anything professional with this, you have still helped me grow! So, thank you.

First of I thank you for sharing that with me and with everyone!! 🙏 I understand the mentality you speak of as I have seen a lot of that in this industry and it's pathetic in my honest opinion. And to be honest you are exactly right about the fact that I am relatively new to tattooing and it's for that reason that I started this channel now instead of later becuase I didnt want to forget all the questions I had when I started and I never want to get to the point where I feel like I am some sort of special person cause I can tattoo (cause thats the way it seems most are). I see tattooing as an art form that should be respected and dabbled in carefully. BUt with that said I think anyone who want to take their art skills and put them on skin should have the opportunity to learn how to do that. I wish you the best of luck on your journey and dont stop cause you can make this happen if you want it bad enough. I am sorry to hear about your experience with those shops. I know their are some amazing tattoo artists running shops and treating people the right way, I just look forward to the day when there are more like that. Again thank you for sharing and Keep Rocking!!! 🤘🤘 🤘🤘

Ive been watching your videos for some time. You have really helped and explained many larts of tattooing. I thank you. I had apprenticed at a streetshop who mainly focus on traditional style work. I learned alot and built a solid platform in tattooing. Due to life events i had to leave my apprenticeship after 9 months. I was the hardest decision i had to make. It put me in a mode of deppresion because i felt like i failed on my dream to becoming a tattoo artist. Luckily after some time i snapped out of it and went to search for another apprenticeship. No one wanted an apprentice so i began to do my own thing.at this time is when i found your videos and Johnny Gaults videos and it has help me become better at persuing my dream. From the basics of being super sanitary to the actual art of tattooing. I am now about half a year doing my own thing and i will continue to push to become the best i can be. Thank you for posting these videos. Most people think it is a fun and cool thing to do when it comes to being a "tattoo artist". I am not that at all. I will always educate myself and try and learn and contribute as much as i can. I never wana stop learning. Keep pushing myself. I know i am new and still fresh but i am certain this is my calling. Thanks again for helping me get back on that horse and push to be better. Keep making these videos. U making a difference.

Ignore the ELITE club. We have every resource available with the jnternet these days. Paying your dues can also mean taking time out of your own personal life to tattoo and improve your skills. I came across your channel a few weeks ago and have watched all of them. I recently began changing the medium I do my art on from paper to skin (of course I still use paper as well). I am 44 years old and really don’t know if I can get to the next level of tattooing people outside of my family/friends, but I just really like tattooing be it for money or not. Long story short I have learned so much more from watching your videos and want to thank you for sharing your knowledge to all, especially people like me who doesn’t really care if I get to make money doing this some day or not, I will still tattoo. I can see you are advancing and with that comes less time for educational videos (free for us I might add) but would love to see a section from you on how to draw tattoo style art. I personally like to draw my own flash but seeing as how I lack the skills to do realistic art I would love some input on how to use detailed art but with outline placement to actually be able to pull it off without killing the look of my favorite art. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you again for doing what you do, but most of all thank you for your service and defending my ability to sleep comfortably and safe every night!!

    Bought my kit and extras.
Sat down and trial and errored my self through seting up the machine(coil) and a did a few tinsey tiny tattoos(complete garbage) and one large rose(honestly not that bad im proud of it.) Both of which were With a literal single needle(didnt realize i needed to use 3,5,9RLs which are what I thought were shaders)on practice skin. Sat down watched 25 of the 65 of your tattoo tutorial Playlist.
Today i ordered a bunch more stuff. Now that I learned from YOU what I now know. I'm so much more confident and excited to continue to practice.
You're channel is basically a Tattoo Apprenticeship for the socially akward. (me 100%)

To get licensed in doing what I enjoy and now I feel more secure in going for it.

Don’t care if you’re a scratcher or a pro! Also you’ve been very honest about not being a pro from the beginning. You’ve taught me so much when other pros will not. Reddit won’t even allow anyone to COMMENT their OPINIONS on how a tattoo looks if they’re not a verified professional. I’m not kidding lmao. Anyway you’ve taught me a lot and I’m doing fairly decent on oranges and fake skin. Learned so much about depth and needle types from you too. And when I bring it to my own skin it’ll be super sterile (thanks to your education) and somewhere nobody can see, after tons of practice.... which isn’t available if nobody teaches. Thank you! :)

    • @ArtSomething
      @ArtSomething  4 года назад

Thank you Rose I really do appreciate your support!! Yeah I stay off of reddit and anything that breads negativity. Everything starts in your mind, you have to believe you can in your mind and then just carry out that goal. And you can not let the negativity in. People like to tare down those who are trying to better themselves as they dont want to see anyone doing better then themselves. I believe its for that reason people dont like to share info. And I'm happy to hear the videos are helping you out!! Keep at it dont quit and best of luck to you on your journey!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

I did my first couple of tats 11 years ago when i was 17 with a homemade tattoo gun my uncle made out of a handheld blender, a led pencil, a rubber band, an eraser and a guitar string. I did an eight ball for my uncle and a giant grim reaper on his back with a middle finger sticking up and the other hand had the world burning and i did some letters for my other uncle and i did a big ass coi fish on my right thigh cause i thought i could hide it from my dad but he found out pretty fast lol. I haven’t thought about tattooing since but more recently i bought a tattoo machine and had my girl and her brother and his gf tat another coi fish to hang out with my old one. All the old tats i did wasnt the best of quality but i didnt care i still love it and think its cool that i did it myself. The other day i tatted a hannya mask on my knee and that came out pretty awesome now i just got to work on shading. Listening to your videos really inspired me to keep doing it cause i always been the artist out of my peers ever since kindergarten i just never seen an avenue i can go with it. Thanks bro for bringing out the artistic side of me that was dormant for a long time i hope to be great one day and leave my mark on the world

I remember I use to sweat and shake every time I started a tattoo.. lol.
Best advice I can share,, if you have a bad stincle your gonna have a bad tattoo,,
slow down when you're lining, and stretch that skin , the line work is everything..
Remember to slow your machine speed when doing small details so you will have more control and you don't have blow outs ..
Learn to Line with a 3r and 5r...... you can always make the line bigger but never smaller..
Just my two cents happy holidays 🤗..

Going to start on fake skin again and learn what works for me.

Thats awesome congrats on getting back into tattooing!! But it really sucks to hear about the shop you where at. I used a coil machine for the first couple months but switched early to rotary pens and have honestly been stuck on them since. WIth that said I dont think I am the best person to teach or show the ins and outs of coil machines. I do believe there are some good vids out there that do show this.
