I just saw the film about his life, Song Without End. Quite compelling! He had a tumultuous life, as so many great artists do, who are thrown into the limelight. I felt rather badly for the two main women his life, Countess Marie d'Agoult and Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, since the first was rejected by him and the latter was not allowed to have an annulment of her marriage, and she was a pious Catholic this was enough for her to end the long extramarital romantic relationship with Liszt. Then his daughter Cosima married Wagner (his 2nd marriage), effectively ending 1st marriage. Liszt was a virtuoso concert pianist, famed in Europe, and his great technical ability is reflected in his compositions. He was also an avid supporter of fellow composers such as Wager and Berlioz, conducting their works. He was himself religious and joined a monastery and a Catholic religious order at the end of his life.

My father used to blast a wide variety of classical while driving me around when I was very young. It drowned out the world and there was no car, no fear, no road. I don't remember when it happened exactly, but one day, he stopped, and though life is life and full of joy I do, like most, know pain and fear. HitomiAyumu I wouldn't say that he is too simple, you never know what to expect when listening to his melodies. He knows how to capture a feeling and translate it in notes and rhythm. Of course, being a pianist clearly shows you how complicated it is to play Liszt. But does that make any pianist look simpler and thus less good than he is ? I don't believe so. Let's transcend complexity in compositions, let's go beyond structures and technique and just contemplate the beauty that lies in the melody. The ineffable beauty of the captured feeling striving for freedom. I believe that's what music is about, nothing but a disinterested contemplation. Said differently : bliss.
