    Chopin, a great fan of Liszt, wrote his famous Etudes and when finished showed the notes to the master.
    Chopin later said " He took my notes on first sight and played them better than I will ever be able to play them "

    "In 1844, the 33-year-old pianist was on one of his exhausting, triumphal European tours...One of the stops on this tour was Montpellier, where a local music-lover reproached him for playing Bach’s A minor Prelude and Fugue in a flashy and vulgar way.Liszt patiently showed him his three ways of playing Bach’s piece.
    The first way was simple and unfussy, “as the author must have understood it”, as Liszt explained. Then he played it again, “with a slightly more picturesque movement and a more modern style”. Then, as he lit a cigar, Liszt said: “Now here is the way I would play it for the public - to astonish, as a charlatan.” And he then played the piece, so the cowed and overwhelmed Frenchman tells us, with all kinds of virtuoso feats that were “prodigious, incredible, fabulous” - while still managing to smoke his cigar." - From The Telegraph. What a savage

    I just saw the film about his life, Song Without End. Quite compelling! He had a tumultuous life, as so many great artists do, who are thrown into the limelight. I felt rather badly for the two main women his life, Countess Marie d'Agoult and Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, since the first was rejected by him and the latter was not allowed to have an annulment of her marriage, and she was a pious Catholic this was enough for her to end the long extramarital romantic relationship with Liszt. Then his daughter Cosima married Wagner (his 2nd marriage), effectively ending 1st marriage. Liszt was a virtuoso concert pianist, famed in Europe, and his great technical ability is reflected in his compositions. He was also an avid supporter of fellow composers such as Wager and Berlioz, conducting their works. He was himself religious and joined a monastery and a Catholic religious order at the end of his life.

    My father used to blast a wide variety of classical while driving me around when I was very young. It drowned out the world and there was no car, no fear, no road. I don't remember when it happened exactly, but one day, he stopped, and though life is life and full of joy I do, like most, know pain and fear. Raw nerves, tired and fleeting, awaken in me more poignantly than they did then, if they did at all. Although the fear still comes from time to time, never is it more silent than when I drown myself in loud, well-timed classical. I must have back then however now, now I smile and never take it for granted.

    "One of the most forward-looking musicians of the Romantic era, the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt excelled in various musical pursuits. As a composer he developed new compositional techniques; as a pianist he formed a new style of pianism; as a conductor he tirelessly promoted the music of his contemporaries; as a teacher he influenced most of the leading pianists of the next generation; and as a Christian Liszt fought a lifelong battle to balance his worldly ambitions and spiritual aspirations."

      @houdanaitelbarj8068 9 лет назад +5

      HitomiAyumu I wouldn't say that he is too simple, you never know what to expect when listening to his melodies. He knows how to capture a feeling and translate it in notes and rhythm.
      Of course, being a pianist clearly shows you how complicated it is to play Liszt. But does that make any pianist look simpler and thus less good than he is ? I don't believe so. Let's transcend complexity in compositions, let's go beyond structures and technique and just contemplate the beauty that lies in the melody. The ineffable beauty of the captured feeling striving for freedom. I believe that's what music is about, nothing but a disinterested contemplation. Said differently : bliss.
      That's why Liszt, Chopin and Rachmaninoff are so often listed among people's favorite pianist ( or shall I say among people who have some knowledge of music, are in a way aesthete so as to appreciate it ).

    حلم حب، فرانز ليزت. أروع ما اسمعت في موسيقى البيانو، طوال حياتي الستة و الستين. تمنيت لو أهديته نصف عمري، لكان قد أتاح للعالم معزوفات موسيقية لم يشهد للتاريخ لها مثيل

    Liszt was one of the rock stars of his time. He would challenge anyone to come up on stage and compete with him on the piano - the challengers would leave in tears. Franz was the best; he wrote the transcendental etudes because no one else composed music that he found challenging.

    Tema que meu sacerdote tocava pra mim. Liberstraum. Nosso tema de amor! Vc dizia: Tu és meu sonho de amor realizado! Imortal! E eu eternamente direi: És meu único! Nada e nem ninguém poderá mudar esse fato! Mesmo nosotros fisicamente distantes, vc em outro corpo, eu tb não mais perto de ti, devido a uma fatalidade que nos separaram, e que te fez não acreditar em mim, mas ainda somos e seremos um só, e a verdade um dia virá por terra. E um dia Villar vc vai enxergar que eu sempre fui sua. Talvez não nos vejamos mais, mas nosso amor é eterno! Um dia vc vai enxergar por si mesmo! Aonde eu estiver eu te levo comigo e aonde vc estiver vc me leva contigo. Tudo está escrito! Ninguem mudará! Linda seleção! Amo Lizst! Seja feliz meu amor! Lembre de mim com carinho! Só isso te peço! Gratidão a quem postou essa seleção!

    Not only through his unparalleled and totally new for the time, technical brilliance, and becoming the biggest musical personality of the period, through touring concerts that drove people to hysteria, but most importantly his “music of the future”, where he invented the symphonic poem and use of thematic metamorphosis, where the themes in the works would undergo many transformations in sound and emotional variance, that which Wagner actually used in his leitmotif themes all throughout his huge musical dramas, and the new and unheard of forward looking harmonic sonorities that would sound as though they could be from the 20th century, that can be heard in his late piano works; Liszt was and forever be a huge power in the development of western music- much more than a mere virtuoso that wrote difficult piano music.
