The true enemies of the mankind here are the gods who orchestrated whole thing from the very beginning: controlled Ardyn (sacrificial lamb) through the Scourge, by the same means kicked the one defying them Astral (Ifrit) from the table, Noctis then became the same 'sacrificial lamb' that was destined to die alongside Ardyn. If only to get the world rid of Scourge, could be done easier and without loss of thousands of lives. But Bahamut himself said that the darkness shall befall upon Eos. In the end, there was no choice for Ardyn. He couldn't even talk it out with the King of Light, because as we've seen here the gods are too powerful and could prevent any try of resistance to their plans. The only thing I can think of to defy the gods would be destroying the Crystal, yet it's unclear if it's possible at all.
Ardyn could atleast try to talk to Regis or Noctis , explain everything to them. He cannot be killed without using the powers of all kings anyway, at the very least,he could sow seeds of rebellion or just throw a wrench in the wheel to the plans of the gods.
The amount of world building this DLC has is incredible. Unfortunally Square decided to rush things and split the game in 37368 parts... XV could easily be one of the best, if not the best Final Fantasy.
