the key to the Alexa's popularity is their concerted efforts to come as close as possible to the look of 'film'. The look of 'film' remains the go-to standard and the Alexa's color science best mimics that for the film industry.
Because RED cameras are cheaper, even if you have to sell a kidney for the proprietary and much needed accessories. Gene is smart and knows his stuff considering he is all about Arri cine cameras....but he ultimately shoots on a Canon, which obviously disqualifies the aforementioned sentence. Total fail...
This is my first video from you, and I love your attitude about filmmaking. While people will just generally say something smug like, "Why would you use an Arri Alexa for vlogging...?" You actually did it just to have fun. You don't take yourself too seriously. Our industry needs more people like you. Cheers.
Potato Jet during the video..."This is not sponsored at all... I've just been a big fan and super stoked to be working with them.." Potato Jet planning the video... If I say a bunch of good stuff about Arri, maybe they'll let give me a free camera... It's worth a try! "ACTION!"
A few technical corrections: 1 - The "rare earth element" they told you is "secret sauce" - it really isn't. It's a thermoelectric cooler(peltier), the same thing as in a car's mini fridge. Most professional cameras stabilize(note - STABILIZE, not COOL!) their sensor temperature because calibration is only valid for certain temperatures. Passing current through it causes one side to get cold, the other to get hot. The hot side is heatsinked to the giant metal body, or a giant heatsink in Blackmagic's Ursa Mini cameras for example. 2 - The "two processor" thing for 16 bit is a bit of a misdirection. The ALEV III sensor has a dual gain architecture - the sensor itself only has two sets of amplifiers at different gains, and the analog to digital conversion is done on the circuit boards, whereas on more compact integrated cameras, the sensor itself has an ADC and outputs digital data. I haven't torn into an Alexa yet(donations, anyone? :P), but I'm guessing that it just has two separate ADC channels for each gain stage, and then it blends the images coming out in post to get the highest signal to noise ratio. It's the same with Blackmagic cameras, except all that is done on the sensor - you get two digital outputs, high gain and low gain.
Correct on the Peltier, but very few other cameras do this, since it does make the cameras heavier and more expensive. But worth it for the increase in image quality.
19:47 They use a peltier element to control the sensors temperature. It's a huge advantage especially in low-light situations due to the reduced thermal noise. It's a technique also used in sensors for space exploration and other remote sensing applications to get more reliable data.
Baller camera for sure. Would be a dream to get some of those for my studio with models. Right now we be shooting boudoir models and music videos on full frame and these bigger sensors are just a dream
Keep up the good work man. The reason you are great is because you are perfect on camera AND as a working DP you actually know what you are talking about.
As a german I can say the "A" in ARRI is pronounced like a very short "uh", so it's more like "Uh-Ree", not "Air-Ree". Also it's very interesting that USA (Hollywood) is by far THE place where the best cinema movies come from, but they are mostly produced with german equipment from ARRI (cameras, lenses, follow focus & lights), Sachtler (tripods), Zeiss (lenses), Sennheiser (microphones), and so on.

Love this video and the Arri Alexa line of cameras. My wife worked for the stunt coordinator of FordvFerrari and I got to visit while they were shooting the film. I went to visit the camera truck and the guys were super cool and it was like being in a tech candy store! Roger Deakins also shot 1917 with this camera as well.

Anyone else's heart brake when Gene said "this isn't a sponsored video"?

That would be like giving away a house
How much are they selling for and where can I buy one?
@@erskinhansen1715 I think they might be "rental only" right now from Arri. Kinda Like Panavision's whole lineup.
