The image from a RED is insanely flexible, and I love their decisions regarding ISO-invariance, but they are a huge PAIN IN THE ASS on set. Buggy (a decade later), unergonomic, and endlessly fiddly. I'm glad I had an amazing AC last time I used one, because they can really slow you down. I can see why Alexas are so popular, because they seem built from the ground up to make your life easier. Easy to use, reliable, and excellent colour science.
I shoot roughly half Alexa and half Red. I do prefer the Alexa image and would choose any variant over a RED, but for me Red has always been very stable and easy to kit out and use. It's just different, which is bad on either camera if you haven't prepped for that particular piece of equipment.
@@mason7031 No, the Red has better dynamic range - according to the companies themselves and independent tests. The Arri has pixels that are like twice the size though so it captures way more light, which is why it's far better in low light. I'm assuming that's because the human eye is most sensitive to green light so they capture extra of it - it can then be colour corrected out in post to produce a superior image than a camera without the extra green.

@@SHDEdits alexa doesn't have HDR features like red. only their alexa mini and new camera has 4k sensor red helliums now 8k and has more dynamic range. Red raw compression is amazing.
@@dankazama09 Yeah but the issue with Red for a lot of large DP's is it's highlights and color, They just don't roll off the same as an Alexa, which is why older DP's are more attracted to it, it resembles a more filmic texture. You certainly can bring extra dynamic range out of the Red with it's raw, however that's only when using raw, I've seen comparisons between the Red Hellium and Alexa XT on a base log exposure, and alexa handles color much better then Red at different stops. Alexa seems to keep very consistent color information, which for large budget features obligated to maintain a certain tone, it makes sense why it'd be the more desirable camera brand. Of course this all depends on what you're shooting too. If you're shooting an Apple Commercial or a high budget CGI feature, then Red is the way to go for it's flexibility in resolution and raw. However for something with a little more edge, that doesn't look as perfect and more stylistically different, Alexa is a great choice for it's imperfections. There certainly is such a reason to avoid something too sharp and too perfect when picking a camera for a film. I'd say alexa is great for dramatic narratives, science fiction features and anything that requires a bit more edge.
@@SHDEdits you have a point. i thought i was replying with stewart gilligan griffin. btw RED has an announcement with NVIDIA they're going to have a software update which boost RED RAW even more. monstro is the beast. 2 for day (creamier skin and hijghlights, better tonality and transition between light and dark, warmer tone as well). 1 for nights (more dramatic and contrast) 2 handles skin better
From the point of view of a consumer -- I'm a musician, not a videographer -- the ARRI looks better. The ARRI seems to produce footage that's more creamy and smooth.
Just had my first shoot as a 2nd AC with an Arri and the menus were so insanely easy to navigate! -- The quality in video was absolutely nuts. -- I definitely prefer the Arri far more than the Red in terms of quality and in terms of how it treats lighting.
Right now, there is no other digital camera that gets the colors as right and true as the arri alexa. The reason why Hollywood shoots with it most of the time.
Coming back to this video after I’ve spent more time working on videos, the thing I notice right away is the dynamic range of the ARRI. It’s definitely no contest after becoming more aware of the different aspects of video quality.

Camera 2 has better dynamic range in my opinion, which I think is the Arri Alexa. I'm on the pause time btw. Now let's have a look! Update: Yuss! I got it.
Alexa is much easier to work with in post - it’s consistent no mater what you do to the footage while Red footage takes a lot of finangling once you get into heavy grades.

@@tastydoritos9915 Fair enough. Despite the fact that the poll shows that the majority beg to differ with that conclusion, I guess even one person feeling that the red is better at low light proves that it comes down to preference, my bad.
I watched up to 2:00 and gotta say, whatever camera is #2 is the camera I would go for. Comes out on top for me in every single shot because it captures different levels of shadow very wel (Think thats the dynamic range but not sure) I feel like camera #2 gives me more options in post, whereas Camera#1 has a more "ready to use shot" straight out of the camera
Just like the build, the RED has that grittier feel. Makes it perfect for series' like Stranger things that have that dark theme. But I still prefer the ARRI
love your videos! In my opinion i like the Arri much more, just the skintones, dynamic range and Lowlight.. so basically everything looked a bit nicer for me and my pair of eyes. But I´m just a starter in this industry, working in germany for a small filmstudio where we are shooting imagefilms with a sony fs7. I mean the fs7 in combination with a shogun and ProResRaw is just fine but this Alexa Mini looks so good, its like another world of cinematography. But like everybody says, its not the equipment, it is your skill level and your style that makes you good. Never wrote such a long comment :D
The dynamic range is actually better in terms of stops in the Red. I prefer the contrast rendering of the Arri and that could qualify as a "better" dynamic range, but yeah, the Red is technically better.
Everything about the ARRI is just so.. palatable. The nature of the noise, the firmly present but not harsh high frequency details, smooth mid band, consistent colour balance under many lighting conditions, exceptional highlight rendering. Even when you zoom in, there's not obviously more detail with the 8K sensor.
2, hands down. It is Arri. Class on its own. Amazing dynamic range, great colors in many lighting conditions, awesome skin tones. Red has quite a bit to improve in sensor tech. Arri has some stuff to improve in terms of resolution , codecs and ergonomy, but really in pro settings, not of this matters.
@@harrbailphotography5257 The arri looks shit at low light in my opinion. 13:26 the RED is waaaay nicer when it comes to low light. But the arri looks so nice at daylight.

It would have been nice to compare the features of each camera like the WiFi phone apps that run them, focus peaking, highlight and lowlight clipping tools, as well as HDRx with the ability to shoot two simultaneous streams at two different exposures etc. You left out a lot. Also would have been cool to see ultra flat files pulled into premiere and FCP-X and how they perform and grade w/ regards to dynamic range and playback.
Awesome, if you ever want to compare to the Flex 4K with any of those let me know and we can align something. yeah RED has too many options sometimes and if you don't know it very well and you choose the wrong one, someone is in trouble. you should watch my vid where I compare the C200 vs RED Mostro VV vs Flex 4K. PJ tell me what you think.
We use the RED Helium at my school and we’ve been taught to avoid using the button to shut down and just press the battery life on the screen and shut down from there, quick lil short cut that helps. It’s like a computer so once you shut down you have to give it a bit until the fans stop running if you wanna turn it back on. Although with the RED, we’ve had it crash before due to improper shut down via holding the power button for too long on a few shoots when other people have used it.
For me, I instantly guessed which was the Arri because of one vital detail: the bokeh was not perfectly circular. It is organic and imperfect. The red footage always looked more geometric, so I deduced that the Arri footage was the Arri because it looked more imperfect, thus much more likely to be desired by cinema. To clarify, I am not saying the image is worse--I am saying that the lense artifacts are less geometric and more organic. Instead of bokeh being perfect circles, they are almost egg shaped.
I was sure camera 2 was arri but at times I couldn't tell while at others it was obvious. This changes everything... I still prefer the Arri look though. Thanks for the informative video Mr. Potato... Jet
I've worked with both, Red has a real problem in low light as it's dynamic range is so big that ISO 1000 is your max. Sometimes the Sony A7 pisses on it! :o) Arri + Cooke S4 lenses is >L-U-S-H
Alexas have "THE BIGGEST" dynamic range and "THE VERY BEST" colour science of any cameras out there literally "THE VERY BEST" on this Earth. RED, Blackmagic, Canon & Sony combined also won't be able to compete with Alexa.
at 26:57 pretty sure Camera A = red (more yellows, and it feels like the blacks are clipping) Camera B = I think lexa cuz the shadows have more range and the magenta colour paletter
Man, you are awesome! To be honest, can't understand why your channel is not that successful as a Peter McKinnon Maybe because of the name, Potato Jet )) I believe in this channel!! Great job
RED basically uses DRM to lock down their accessory compability. Thats how they get away with selling e.g. their minimags for a huge profit margin. I used both brands and I found the RED annoying to use, also darker scenes sometimes looked like they were shot on a phone (bit of exaggeration). What annoyed me the most were their forums, the CEO and COO of Red are basically two assholes that think a little too much of their products.
i was wondering: is focus peaking a thing for professional focus pullers? to me it seems quite usefull but i‘ve seen focus pullers who refered to monitors who didn‘t use it

I've used red gamma 4 and it's pretty bad at retaining highlights and shadows, however shot in log with red's rec709 luts they're alot LOT closer
Red almost seems like a camera that can get a similar look to Alexa but needs much more configuring. Alexa is just on point out of the box
OLPF LL and HL helps alot with color have you tried it? i use promist filter if i want to soften my image a bit
Nothing beats the look of the Alexa, feels like I have watched every single comparison video on youtube by now lol.
The make or break for a camera is what can be done with the footage in post. If you’re just gonna pair them together with basic color correction, then you’re only touching the surface for what a camera can do better/differently than another
The Arri just decimates. Every time. So much separation, so much clarity, so much emotion.
Nice potato jet! Live your stuff man. Hope I can be as energetic and film like you some day!
2 for day (creamier skin and hijghlights, better tonality and transition between light and dark, warmer tone as well).
1 for nights (more dramatic and contrast)
2 handles skin better
From the point of view of a consumer -- I'm a musician, not a videographer -- the ARRI looks better. The ARRI seems to produce footage that's more creamy and smooth.
Just had my first shoot as a 2nd AC with an Arri and the menus were so insanely easy to navigate! -- The quality in video was absolutely nuts. -- I definitely prefer the Arri far more than the Red in terms of quality and in terms of how it treats lighting.
Awesome Comparison
I love these more “advanced “ videos . Haha keep it up sir!
I love the color from the arri alexa
Right now, there is no other digital camera that gets the colors as right and true as the arri alexa. The reason why Hollywood shoots with it most of the time.
It resembles film the most but colourgraded red does look really similar
Coming back to this video after I’ve spent more time working on videos, the thing I notice right away is the dynamic range of the ARRI. It’s definitely no contest after becoming more aware of the different aspects of video quality.
The dynamic range is insane and once you see it you can't unsee it!
Arris newest camera has even better dynamic range. 2,5 stops more, kinda insane
Is it me or is this just not the most "AWESOMEST" comparison video !!! I just left the dark ages and discovered my path to the light ! Awesome content !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Camera 2 has better dynamic range in my opinion, which I think is the Arri Alexa. I'm on the pause time btw. Now let's have a look!
Update: Yuss! I got it.
Alexa is much easier to work with in post - it’s consistent no mater what you do to the footage while Red footage takes a lot of finangling once you get into heavy grades.
this the one of the best video for me today.. the background music, the footage, the efforts that you made, the editing... everything is so soothing to eyes man.. really love it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
hopefully my wife's boyfriend gets me a red 8k camera
@How Not To and you are a very gullible little bastard
pixel quality > pixel quantity.
red 8k seems like a marketing stunt.
LOL
@@Ginkoman2 same with Arri they say them same shit over and over, i never like look at it as he best camera like that
13:37, the image on the right is far far better, it can't come down to preference. Colors, grain, shadows, name it, Alexa's killing the red
It can, the RED camera is just superior in low light recordings.
Just look at 1:31
@@tastydoritos9915 I think you got it mixed up. At 1:31, red is 1.
@@Chivoyage i know that's why i think it looks WAY nicer lol
@@tastydoritos9915 Fair enough. Despite the fact that the poll shows that the majority beg to differ with that conclusion, I guess even one person feeling that the red is better at low light proves that it comes down to preference, my bad.
dude wtf? at the 4:27 mark that's my city Riga, just around the corner were i live :) what were you doing in Latvia?
Vjaxa I was there for 2 weeks filming. Haha. Should’ve hit u up for a beer.
Potato Jet damn that would have been so nice, me as a amature video maker I would have had a lot of questions 😂👍 next time bro
16:29 That is a torx tool. You can find in it any hardware store.
I’m tired if things being named Alexa...
Alexa, how do I change my name.
They had the name long before Amazon did it.
Alexa bedroom fan on!
Alexa, whats your base iso?
petra ensi oh god, I’d absolutely love just talking to my camera😍
Arri is do much better - dynamic range and slowmotion
The dynamic range is actually better in terms of stops in the Red. I prefer the contrast rendering of the Arri and that could qualify as a "better" dynamic range, but yeah, the Red is technically better.
not really... only the colors look more natural on the arri, the dr is better on a red
I’ve come for an entry level camera. It appears I’ve entered the wrong store.
At the end, I've decided to stick with on my a6000 with Sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn lens :D :D
YES! I was waiting for an Alexa vs Red video. Great videos by the way man! I love your style and enthusiastic approach, keep up the great work!
Also he's saying the red is meant to look dark in night but really it just doesn't have the low light capability that arri has
@@harrbailphotography5257 The arri looks shit at low light in my opinion. 13:26 the RED is waaaay nicer when it comes to low light. But the arri looks so nice at daylight.
@@tastydoritos9915 In that low light shot the Arri has better dynamic range and less noise while the RED's default profile is massively crushing the blacks to the point that there's no detail left. Not clue how you came to the conclusion that the RED looks better.
Indeed, a very good video. I learned a lot about RED and ARRIS Alexa cameras. I used to go for BTS photo and video shoots for music video and commercial advertisements shoots. I have seen ARRIS camera being operated by DoP.
Now I came to know about connectors and all accessories a lot ....that is awesome content...you put together in one video. Thanks dude 🤝👌
Mate! Thank you for creating content like this.
It’s great to see other people that work in the industry and share the knowledge.
4:46 That’s actually the price of a C200, lmao!
10:40 I really hope thats not peck of sand on the sensor, That would be devastating for me if I saw speck of dust or sand in my arri sensor.
Man, watching pretty much only tech RUclipsrs I would have thought RED was the only high end camera to buy lol. Nice to see theres competition, wonder why all the techies only use RED.
Because RED is more flexible for editors.
Because RED is cheaper. As simple as that.
Immediately noticed the nice highlight roll off in the Arri clip. Feels very cinematic out of the box.
The highlight roll-off of Arri is too iconic.
Torx is way better then hex!
Instead of bokeh being perfect circles, they are almost egg shaped.
i don't know jack squat about cinematography, but i like to watch these kinds of videos
Arri + Cooke S4 lenses is >L-U-S-H
you are one of the worlds best tech RUclipsrs EVER love ya work
Alexas have "THE BIGGEST" dynamic range and "THE VERY BEST" colour science of any cameras out there literally "THE VERY BEST" on this Earth. RED, Blackmagic, Canon & Sony combined also won't be able to compete with Alexa.
Not even close in terms of dynamic range and colors. I guess that's why one is used by Hollywood cinematographers and the other by RUclipsrs.
they're not even testing the new sensor of red. Red hellium or monstro
Like 0 youtubers use cinema cameras except for ones that review them shits lmao
its the red dragon sensor and that too in a scarlet body...
@@RubLox_Live wrong :) quite a few RUclipsrs are recording with reds
RubLox Jon Olsson bought a RED to handheld vlog with.
I wonder what the standard rental rates are for each camera.
5:26 that made me spit out my food 😂😂😂
at 26:57
pretty sure Camera A = red (more yellows, and it feels like the blacks are clipping)
Camera B = I think lexa cuz the shadows have more range and the magenta colour paletter
Man, you are awesome! To be honest, can't understand why your channel is not that successful as a Peter McKinnon
Maybe because of the name, Potato Jet )) I believe in this channel!! Great job
Test the arri alexa vs the lg v40
Holyshit. It's like when Superman Fights The Hulk.
The whole ordeal with RED involving DRM and the min-mags is why my film production ended up going with Arri instead.
What gave it away was the greenish tint and also the better dynamic range for the Alexa.
i was wondering: is focus peaking a thing for professional focus pullers? to me it seems quite usefull but i‘ve seen focus pullers who refered to monitors who didn‘t use it
RUclips recommended this, Mmm maybe it's interesting.
"Give me the goddamn ball"
*subscribed.
ARRIis known for it's color science! and RED is known for it's "Monstro"-sized sensor...
Its. It's means it is ;-).
but Arri has the Alexa 65 so.......... OOF
Actually arii has bigger sensor than red
Got to work with the Alexa 65 on Aqauman last year we also had 3 RED monstros to shoot some of the VFX plate shots. Would love to work with an Alexa IMAX some day
@@TimsWildlife It's is used as both a shortening of "It is" and property of the pronoun "It"
E.g. That coral is nice, it's as green as grass.
That coral is nice, it's color is green.
HI POTETO JET
wow i have like no creativity
yea man gotta work on that
For me as a person never had big contact with film making its crazy that both cameras look sooo different. I always thought the netflix series just were graded very different now i know its because they mostly use the red camera with this special color theme. Crazy that they have this characteristic and not just try to be as nartural as possible.
Ok whatever the guys at Arri are doing is definitely making a crystal clear difference...
Even Basic footage shot with Arri looks like a frickin movie.
I have never seen a such huge difference in a camera comparison. ARRI is crazy good.
Arri has no competition literally no competition. They're the very best in the business.
12:31 I tried playing back the footage on a 3D tv.... it worked....
I did the same thing but in vr haha
13:47 Red looks a lot more movie like
NicoloM more like a cheap dslr. Now shadow details
Nope, just tons of loss in shadow details which would be harder to recover from in post.
let me save everyone some time
arri= beautiful picture ( film industry work horse)
red=amazing tech specs ( visual FX guys love it)
I spotted the arri immediately! So beautiful!
its crazy. i didnt knew arri before this video and now everytime a see a movie or msic video which looks especially nice its always shot on a alexa.
@@Ginkoman2 ikr! It's just sooo beautiful!!! 😭
