The parents are trying to look out for their daughter to protect her inheritance, just in case she ever finds herself in a divorce situation. If she invests it in an IRA, where she can show that money was never intermingled in marital assets, then it is legally protected. If she is having any marital problems at all then she should listen to her parents. Also, if she were to die before her husband she can legally will that to her children which also protects their inheritance, if he were to ever remarry.
Top up that TFSA before putting money into an RRSP if it’s tax free money coming to you. You don’t need to offset the tax on this because the inheritance is tax free. But Kate’s plan sounds awesome. I get where her parents are coming from but Kate’s plan is better.
I don’t get why so many adults seems so caught up in what parents or smother adults are telling them to do . Who cares . Your an adult - go be an adult . I’ve heard a lot of 30 plus year olds are having their housing and cars subsidized by parents but maybe these are those kind of people .
Hi, I'm 102 years old. I just got some money and my parents from beyond the grave are telling me what to do with it. What do you think I should do, Dave?
Parents need to stay out of their child’s marriage, it’s Biblical, for a man to leave his mother and father and cling to his wife & vise Versa. “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 NIV
Rachel and Dave are great together because she being his daughter, she can get away with a different level of banter that you just don't get with the other co-hosts lol.
She got pretty worried when she stepped over Dave’s words. She is worried about what dad thinks, just like most daughters would, lol. Cute none the less.
Btw, “honoring” your parents is VERY different from “obeying” your parents. ADULT children DO NOT owe obedience to their parents. Period. But suggestions are welcome, sometimes. 😉
👍 Precisely. This is consistent with an understanding I have formulated. Honoring them doesn't mean condoning their bad (if any) behavior either. I think God knew the Israelites were behaving badly while Moses was on the mountain - He still included honoring parents in the Ten Commandments. Later, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees (Matthew 15) for disregarding that very important Commandment. Rachel is demonstrating a very good example of this; both on how she handled Dave's disagreement, and in the advice she is passing on to the caller when explaining how to approach her parents.
“You live under my roof, you live under my rules” is null and void when you become an adult, move out, and become financially independent from them. My parents were angry that I decided to pay off my student loans and not go into more debt buying a house I didn’t want or need when I became a doctor. I just said “my money, my rules”, and did what I wanted to anyway. Dave is 100% right.
That's exactly how my parents are. Ever since i've moved out, they've wanted me to buy a newer car and I just won't do it. I love them from a distance, but I'm not gonna heed their advice to finance a depreciating asset.

Wow, go Rachel! I’ve noticed over the years that Dave kind of dominates the conversations and options (a trait I can personally relate to and totally understand) and cohosts usually acquiesce, but you stood your ground with him and insisted your point be considered on its merits. Well done!
My mother told me that, if someone gave me money (expecially a rich relative, and there were some of those), say THANK YOU. If the person then tells you what to do with it, just give it back.
Honestly how much she says to her parents depends on how healthy her parents are. Healthy parents, you can tell them why you're doing what you're doing. Unhealthy parents, smile and keep your mouth shut and do what you want.
Exactly. Honestly from the call it sounded like she was the one who asked her parents for advice. It didn’t sound like they overstepped at all - so she can just make her decision and explain it to them and everyone will be okay.
Some parents are very controlling people. After age 18 , these parents cannot ground their children or take away their phone or car keys, so they use money. I was surprised no one suggested a split. Why did the decision have to be just one way or the other? She could have taken 20% and dropped it in retirement and put the rest where she wanted. In this case appeasing the parents a little is still a sound financial decision.
This would be like if your adult child was overweight and they told you they were going to start going to the gym everyday to run on a treadmill, And instead of congratulating them for being smart and wise about physical activity, you criticize them for not using the elliptical lol.
This was exactly his my Dad was. Great analogy. And say this dynamic just made me stop sharing any plans or well…anything with him. Parents don’t do this to your kids 😀
Question - the caller mentioned the parents wanting her to do some home repairs. If the home needs work (new roof, new furnace, new A/C, etc), do those cash with this money. Whatever is left, put towards the mortgage.
I work in an oil and gas adjacent industry and I'm excited for when I finally buy my first EV. It's too early for me in my opinion because I live in a cold climate so I bought a used next to new gas vehicle but I don't doubt my next vehicle will be an EV.
Their interaction is hilarious! She didn’t offer an explanation because Dave didn’t offer his advice expecting it to be followed. The callers parents don’t have that healthy boundary.
Love this, I may or may not have been yelling preach multiple time when this was going on lol!! God bless Dave, Rachel, and the lady and her parents!!!
I wonder if there is some cultural difference stuff going on here. As a Canadian I totally understand what the caller is saying. She said that her parents aren't berating her, it wasn't going to ruin thanksgiving dinner, and her parents are nice wonderful people, just she's just worried that they might be a little disappointed if she didn't follow their advice. If my Dad told me that he thought I should do something specific with my money, I would carefully consider his advice, then I would go ahead and do whatever I wanted, and it wouldn't cause any issues between us.
Rachel isnt dumb for buying an electric car. She's dumb for buying a Tesla, a poorly-made, overpriced electric car. She bought name brand. But hey, some people like their name brands, it's how Apple still exists.
This is a perfect example of Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus argument. The women wants to be all nice and polite when breaking the news to the parents because she is worried and concerned about their feelings, while the man just wants to be direct and tell it like it is and state if you don't like it, so what! I learned a few years ago a very important and power lesson that overtime we are all going to do things that other people, throughout our lives, aren't going to like, understand, or agree with and I say that's their problem, not mine. If they don't like what I do or how I go about doing it, then tell them there's the door and don't let it hit you on your way out! Simple but to the point because I don't care about their whiny hurt feelings! I'll do what I want and how I want it within my adult life and if you don't like it, goodbye!
You'd think that most parents would simply be thrilled that she's not blowing it all on new cars and fancy vacations.
Haha the problem is some parents aren't most parents. Maybe they're better, but you get different problems 😅

This is why i refuse to accept monetary gifts from anyone
Good news is either her or her parents are both looking at something reasonable.
I was surprised no one suggested a split. Why did the decision have to be just one way or the other? She could have taken 20% and dropped it in retirement and put the rest where she wanted. In this case appeasing the parents a little is still a sound financial decision.
Did Dave Buy Rachel a gas electric generator on a trailer to tow behind the Tesla? 😁
To honor your parents is not doing everything they tell you to do.
This would be like if your adult child was overweight and they told you they were going to start going to the gym everyday to run on a treadmill,
And instead of congratulating them for being smart and wise about physical activity, you criticize them for not using the elliptical lol.

This episode was hilarious 😂
This was hilarious. And, I love that Rachael got a Tesla!!! I want one too….someday.
I think this lady wants to be independent. The parents are afraid of that. ???
Their interaction is hilarious! She didn’t offer an explanation because Dave didn’t offer his advice expecting it to be followed. The callers parents don’t have that healthy boundary.
These two are hilariously adorable together
Boy I keep saying it: Rachel for the win.... AGAIN!
Dave got upset she cut him off and he brought out the Tesla.
Tell your parents ok and do what you want!
I have to go with Dave on this, why are the parents so involved in this. At thirty with her own family she needs to firm up the boundaries.
I have a bid f250 diesel truck and a harley... but a tesla model S can drive itself and can outrun a Lamborghini so I side with Rachel lol
Rachel and Dave make a great combo! Such a cute dynamic between them
Agreed! She's not afraid to give a different approach/opinion!!
I like Rachael's way of appoarching. I love how Dave brought up the tesla. 😂😂
Love this, I may or may not have been yelling preach multiple time when this was going on lol!! God bless Dave, Rachel, and the lady and her parents!!!
ONLY CARS THAT BURN OIL ARE GUUD!!!!!!! FREEDOM!!!!!! OIL IS MANLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good grief Dave…
that dog in the background..
YES !!! Someone else thought the same thing.
The helicoptering of parents has been truly detrimental. Adults are still seeking Mommys approval at 45.
How many people can't stand when Dave arrogant Ramsey uses the F-word's cousin in his daily conversation w/people...I'll hang up and listen 🎤....Next✓
