My dog used to suffer severe itchiness for years. I tried everything. My last resource was paying for costly injections. They did work but only for a few weeks. I have been using on my dog the dandruff shampoo & conditioner Head and Shoulders. It has a medication called Pyrithione zinc that helps to treat seborreic dermatitis. It is working very well on my dog. I haven't been giving her the injections for over a year. Make sure you do not put the shampoo in your dog's face. The shampoo irritates the eyes. It takes several baths (in my case like 2 or 3) to see some results. I wanted to share this information because I know how frustrating these skin problems can be, and we know that our little ones are miserables with the itchiness.
@@robinholbrook8296 Don't believe everything in Google. Didn't you read what I said about not putting the shampoo in your dog's face. Even better: don't put it in the dog's head. My dog gets itchy in her paws, tail and belly. I only apply it in these areas.
Thanks so much I have a Gerberian shepsky and we didn't know why he was scratching so much to the point where hair was coming off under his arms thanks for this advice.
thank you for the info, I just adopted a wonderful 4 year old, she is a boxer/pit mix breed, what a wonderful dog she is. so well behaved and trained (I have no idea why someone dropped her off in a parking lot, no one knows if she ran away, the pound did advertise for her owners. (it was our lucky day) I do worry she is getting a little arthritis already so weight control essential a little over weight was 61 pounds when I got her now 75, so I need to cut back her food intake and add more exercise. We are facing food allergies, which has caused a ear infection, sores on her tummy, itchy skin, overly licking her paws and diarrhea. Our vet put her on antibiotic, change of food to lamb and rice or fish and rice, plus I got the talk about weight control. We have only had her 2 months, she came from the pound, which they feed them what ever they have on hand. (thank goodness she was only their a month before we adopted her) she is allergic to foods high in protein (beef and chicken we have to stay clear of). so we have had to go to lamb and rice food, she refuses to eat it dry, so I put 1/4 can (that is how they got them to eat in the pound, mixing canned food with their dry) of lamb and rice canned food, and probiotic sub. I am cutting her canned food back, I want to get where I am just using a tablespoon so I can mix in her probiotic powered. I am working with diet and exercise and allergy issues, I will give your treats a try, everything in the store are full of proteins and chemicals. thank you again for your time and knowledge.
My experience so far. Mines a 7 year old bitch, part Husky and German Shepard. Got advice from this video and others. So bought some dog shampoo from my local pharmacy, gave her two of the best washes of her life, brushed the bejaysus out of her, force fed her omega 3 with eggs and tinned fish, she loves both, I've vacuumed all carpets like they were housing the devil. She is about 80% better than 3 weeks ago. So thank u to all that advised me. I have one extra thing to add when she scratches l stop her and brush her in that particular part of her body so it's my gentler plastic hairbrush scratching her and not her ferocious teeth or claws.
Also something that was causing my dogs itching was he had a chicken allergy so I switched him to beef or lamb. I didn’t know this but most dogs are allergic to chicken.
It's great you got to the bottom of your dog's problem. Only 10% of allergic dogs have a true food allergy and actually beef is the most common cause, being responsible for 34% of these. Chicken is number 3 at 15%
Yes, flax seeds, chia seeds makes my cuticles cracked! No seeds, no nuts for me. My cat, I mixed acv and water scrubbed all over her body every other day.
Thank you so much for this video. I have recently changed to a lamb-based food with no chicken as a kibble and a beef-based food with no chicken as wet canned food. I've seen immediate improvement. I only recently learned that dogs can be allergic to chicken. After checking labels I see that many many dog foods contain chicken.

I cant understand or explain it but simply putting a water mister.humidifier next to his bed and he scratches much much less it is not 100% but just amazingly less itching for some reason I kept thinking it was fleas or mites but I cant find any and our other dog doesnt scratch or chew...still I do frontline regularly. I kinda think it is anxiety more than anything and for some reason the water vapor works I dont know why ....try it at least! I heard it from others and so I tried it and it works for us!
Do you have suggestions for systemic fungal bacterial? My 11 yr old had heart worm treatments as a puppy. His immune system has suffered all these years. He was also exposed to lyme and Ehrlicia in 2012. Hes showing antibodies but they are low. He began having seizures, severe crippling joint pain, he had yeast in his ears now went deaf over night and lost 50% of his vision, vomiting after the vet forced him to have a rabies shot 5 months ago. I've been trying to detox him. How can I reverse that shot? He was acting like a puppy until they gave hin that. He couldn't walk the first two days after they gave it to him.
Hi Dr Alex, I have a 6 month old Blue Nose Pitt Bull. Hes showing signs of allergies with small balding spots. I use Stella and Chewys mixed with Freshpet brand Homestyle Creations. He also gets eggs, fish, vegetables, or meat every day with the kibble. I started giving him Benadryl. But prefer natural home remedies. Of these remedies you mentioned. Which would you recommend? Thank you for the info.
All of them! The more steps taken then better the chance of successful control. Your dog is pretty young to be certain allergies are the cause so I'd also want to be sure of the diagnosis. The Dog Allergy Summit breaks all this down and so much more
@nickeeg97 I'm fairly certain they meant "spray on diluted Apple Cider Vinegar" bc I've seen it recommended before. But you'll want to do a test area to be sure they don't have an adverse reaction. Coconut oil is considered antibacterial & antifungal (from research I've seen), so rubbing it into the skin is supposed to help with various issues. Freezing is supposed to kill mites. They can be allergic to the same things as us... they can even be allergic TO us. (Although I've never heard about eating mites as an issue before.)

I went to a trip my neighbor took care of my shi-tzu. After that she started to itch alot her hair falls because of her itching so much and her skin is pink. The neighbor don't have any dogs so I dont know what happened, how she got that rash. PLEASE HELP!!😭😭
Could be diet. I know a lot of people switched over from kibble to BARF diet and they say it helps stop the itching. Maybe allergic to the ingredients in kibble
Same here. My Vet gave my dog a shot, and sent us home with eye drops, a salve & some pills for the itching. $147.00!!!! Nothing worked!! He never mentioned or asked what I feed her! Grrrrr!!!! She's still itching!
Not really I'm afraid. I think the big thing is to be patient with a dog that you are rehoming, and try and make things as low stress as possible by having safe spaces to retreat to that are quiet and out of the way, consider using pheromones, and not forcing any situations that trigger and signs of stress
@@OurPetsHealth In my area, they consider it normal to give dogs away when circumstances change (be it money, time or boredom, amongst others). I gave two dogs away to two people and asked them not to give them away and they did so, after 6 months. Apparently, they just gave them without too much screening. I'm concerned as to whether these new owners will follow suit. From what I have heard, dogs become very attached to owners and was wondering if constantly changing owners could elicit some form of severe mental disorder in them. I have been looking for studies but I have only found anecdotes illustrating erratic behaviour in dogs having had multiple owners.

Of course, there’s research showing how dogs react to these drugs. Here’s how its done. The pharmaceutical company does a very quiet study and notes when problems occur. For example: Liver problems pop up 12 weeks into the trial Tumors start to form 16 weeks into the trial They carefully record these findings in the study notes. Once they’ve gathered all of the data, they prepare their formal public study. Often they end the public study review before the problems show up. So if the problems appeared at 12 weeks … they publish a 10-week study! Apoquel research is no different.
