Long time, 4th generation, German Shepherd adopted/owner here. 25 years?? 4 different Shepherds, and they all had 1 thing in common. So 3 different vets, 3 different professional suggestions. A lot of research and trial and error, on my own. Here is my experience....I have tried numerous different kibble bagged foods for sensative skin, thinking (incorrectly) the dog(s) were alergic to food, and/or chicken. They were not. Then the cycle begins the following year, begining about mid-March. Yes, its expensive, and yes I am aware of bad experiences others have had with Apoquell. But for us, Apoquel works well. My English Bulldog developed allergies at around 2yrs old. We had to move to raw for a bit because he kept getting yeast infections in his ears. It was recommended to me to “starve the yeast out” we did turkey for 4 months because anything with potatoes or grain can help yeast grow. But a strict diet for a couple months and you would not believe the difference. You can’t do it for too long because there is so much more nutrients they need from bone, organs, and vegetables, but you can slowly introduce those over time. To see what is good and what is not. because he startedb😮 We went with raw for about 4months then slowly started to add in stuff to see if he would react. Grain is also something they can develop an allergy to. Diet is everything with some dogs, it’s crazy the difference in mood, coat, bathroom routine.
Sorry I think I repeat myself, trying to write this up on my little phone screen, but I would recommend looking into food allergies also, not just environmental allergies
TY, you gave us some long term choices. It took years of switching foods for a vet to finally diagnose seasonal allergies. Every Summer and fall is pure hell!
I am using Jax and Daisy Shampoo and conditioner. I bought a gallon of each. It seems to calm my pup down. I also use Quercetin - natural Benadryl and Benadryl for flare ups.
My rescue puppy (18 months old) is constantly chewing her skin, mainly on the back half of the body. She has some new stressors instead of the weekly trucks that go by. My nephew lives here and has episodes of screaming horrible things in a dark room like his room or the bathroom. She's a very fearful white German shepherd who was thrown away in our neighborhood along with her brother when they were 14 weeks old. We spent the first 6 months just being able to pet her without her flinching and the next 6 months being able to have a leash put on and go for a walk. She's on super high-quality food and bathed once a month with medicated shampoo. Going to a vet next week to get an annual check-up.
Well good for you for taking care of such a sweet pup. Patience is key. Use coconut oil or castor oil for the skin. Yes she will lick it but it's super good for her. Try some melatonin for the nephew before going to bed, or banana tea helps sleeping too. We want restful stress free nights. Some white noise to over shadow the trucks may help, like a radio, ocean sounds or TV. Hope this helps . German Shepards are the best, but they can be big babies. ❤❤❤
Bully breed with horrible itching issues...done all that you discussed, but in the end, found a couple of things that work best. I always fed designer, baked foods, but switched to Purina Sensitive skin and stomach, which I swore I would never use and helped a lot. Secondly, bathing three times a week with the shampoos you mentioned, prevents all skin infections now for the last year and a half. Thirdly, the allergy shots I give now helped in a huge way...and lastly, I use Zyrtec...for some reason, it worked better than Apoquel and Apoquel is very expensive. Great video.
TY! On my way to get Zyrtec. I'm fighting seasonal allergies in my Staffordshire Terrier Pitt Mix. I'm to the point of tears. Our vets out till Monday hopefully this will help my baby girl make it through the weekend.
We have a baby Brittany who is 10 weeks old and always scratches, and now has red spots on the back half of her belly. It is turning into scabs. She had been like this for a while, and my husband showed me a few nights ago. What can I use on her that won't hurt her? She is so loving and want her to be happy.
Also, one of my problems is that there is so much information and advice out there that contradicts one another. For instance you say you can wash your dog 3x a week. Most dog advice on that subject says no more often then once a month. This seems to be 3 concensus because it is thought that bathing your dog more often will in fact dry out there skin and cause more problems with itching and such with their skin. Also, I have heard you should give your dog/puppy 1oz of water for pound of weight. Then I hear that over 70% of dogs are dehydrated, which can actually promote our exacerbate skin conditions, so you should encourage your dog/puppy to drink a lot of water, certainly more than the 1oz per pound ratio. My GSD 4mo 24.5lb puppy certainly wants to drink much more than 24.5 ounces of water each day! So, what should I do? I just now noticed a mild rash on her tummy and I am not sure how to deal with it. My funds are limited right now so a vet visit is something I need to avoid at this point. Please help!
I agree 💯, different vets say different things and researching on Google just confuses you more because all you find are contradictions!! DO this, DON'T do this. DO that, DON'T do that!!! Omggg does anybody really know what they're talking about anymore?? So far, the only topical solutions I've found are medicated sprays and shampoos that contain Chlorhexidine and/or Ketoconazole. Dermabliss spray contains both and it's relatively affordable on Amazon, but if you opt for Chlorhexidine spray/shampoo then get the 4% instead of the 2%. I'm still in the process of trying to "cure" my dog's itching completely so I can't say these products will do that, but they seem to be the only things that give her instant relief that lasts a bit longer.

In my opinion yes adding a really good pro and prebiotics would be great for a number of reasons. Could the “leaking gut” be causing the skin issues? That is one thing to look at. I would recommend also treating the skin issues topically while supporting the GI issues. I know how much I drive myself crazy if I’m itching all over.
Do a customer review of owners who have used apoquel. Why would you want to kill your dog slowly. Don't take anyone's word for a treatment until you do research.
Hi Dr. Lindsay! Many thanks for sharing the very useful info with us. One of our dog freeze dried salmon dog treats states its ingredients are salmon and Mixed Tocopherols, may I kindly ask if Mixed Tocopherols cause itchiness and allergy to dogs? And is Mixed Tocopherols safe for dogs? Many many thanks in advance!
They are safe! Tocopherols are any of several closely related compounds, found in wheat germ oil, egg yolk, and leafy vegetables, that collectively constitute vitamin E. They are fat-soluble alcohols with antioxidant properties, important in the stabilization of cell membranes. I hope this helped! Dr.Lindsay Butzer
What about testing in an effort to discover the primary cause (e.g., immunoglobulins; autoimmune disorders; and allergy testing to rule out environmental causes like dust mites, etc., etc.). As opposed to taking medications and frequent bathing for the rest of their lives?

Thanks for this helpful information. My dad is older and on a budget. He loves his Yorky, Sophie, so much. Since my mom passed away his dog, Sophie is his world. He can’t afford to take her to the vet but i recently took her to get that shot and it’s only lasted 4 weeks before taking her for the second time. It’s expensive for me but I know how much she means to him. Is there something more that I can do? That is less expensive? She has gotten the second shot and it seems to not have worked as well as the first. Her skin is very dry. I will start with the baths with head and shoulder shampoo, but would you suggest anything more affordable that will help between the shots?

After washing, we pour down apple cider vinegar + water (50% apple cider vinegar + 50% water) mix on dogs skin. We don't wash away it and dry the dog afterwards. Hey, Pimples on the face could be from too much oil and dirt building up in pores. Naked dog breeds like Chinese crested get this. If your dog has skin scabs and pus on the face could be a bad infection and you need to go to your local vet to have them culture it and start your pet on antibiotics for now to help. Also, gentle baths of the face using a washcloth and head and shoulders shampoo may help in the meantime. I hope this helped!

@@graciezeus5511 I actually thought about Selsun Blue then I saw one even better than that one and those are for itching and flakes from yeast in the hair follicle build up, sounds in relation to me, so......
I have never heard of a veterinary dermatology specialist until now... OMG! My poor dog has had paw licking habits and lately, very itchy skin... Poor girl has been miserable... The baths help, but now I want to see a specialist! We keep thinking she's getting itchy from medication. I've always thought that maybe she is allergic to chicken but no veterinarian has EVER suggested any change in food or anything. So frustrating! Thank you for this video!
To see what is good and what is not.
because he startedb😮
We went with raw for about 4months then slowly started to add in stuff to see if he would react.
Don’t I know but I love my girl ❤.
So basically no need to switch foods if seasonal allergy correct?
Get your nephew on meds.
Do you give your dog cytopoint?
TY! On my way to get Zyrtec. I'm fighting seasonal allergies in my Staffordshire Terrier Pitt Mix. I'm to the point of tears. Our vets out till Monday hopefully this will help my baby girl make it through the weekend.
What dosage to give your dog thanks?
@van3363 my vet recommended Zrytec
@@JamesDavis-me8np what is your dog weight? U can pop into a vet office and just put your dog on the scale real quick
That particular shampoo shown here is strong, I wouldn’t put it on my dog either. I will use natural products as much as possible.

Going with that head n shoulders thanks 🙏
We have a baby Brittany who is 10 weeks old and always scratches, and now has red spots on the back half of her belly. It is turning into scabs. She had been like this for a while, and my husband showed me a few nights ago. What can I use on her that won't hurt her? She is so loving and want her to be happy.
Shea butter, coconut oil, mix well, apply on entire skin twice a day. It does magic.
Vco if no available coconut oil
Thanks for all the insight
No Apoquel for my dogs. EVER.
Why??
Thanks, Dr. Lindsay!
Cytopointe worked awesome for my dog. She only had it 3 times in about 3-4 yrs & has been fine since. She’s 15 now.
Cytppointe where can I buy it?
@@socorroescobar8324 Vet gives as injection. My other dog began itching for the 1st time last month & developed hot spots & was miserable. Vet prescribed Apoquel. After 4 days on it, I was able to stop & not continue 14 days. Then only gave him 1/2 a couple times since. Lots of debate out there on these meds. They say if cancer cells/tumor already developing in body, then Cyto or Apo can speed up the cancer. It’s one of those benefits outweighs the risks.

Reading all your comments makes me feel less alone with this issue. We’ve done Cytopoint a few times but it’s stopped working now. I have the Elizabethan collar back on to save her skin while I try to find an alternative solution.

Ok so hear me out, I have a exotic bully he’s little over a year old, when I got him he had no skin issues ATALL!! over time nearly a month of him living with me (not held in a cage) he started developing a pretty serious skin issue/allergy. It’s hard to explain.
I took him to the vet bc I’ve tired hundreds of different things!!
Changing food.
Medicines.
Bathing more then normal.
Combing him daily (still do this after ab 12h the dry flakey skin returns)
Oils.
I’m very stumped and need some help! Any vets out there I could really use some help please and thanks! I’ll reply back soon thanks for your time!
Did you get any help? I have a bully too and trying to get some help. So far Coconut Oil and omega oil in his food has been helping. Tried these immune chews from amazon and a medicated shampoo and those made him more itchy. We give him Purina kibble, omega oil, Coconut oil and joint supplement..hoping to find something that doesnt cost bare lol
@@DdShevanii Much has been said about Kibble made by any company-- as NOT being a good choice for dog food. Please google something like "Dog Kibble, problems"
What do you think about LEAKY GUT causing skin problems? Wouldn't it be better to add pro and prebiotics?
In my opinion yes adding a really good pro and prebiotics would be great for a number of reasons. Could the “leaking gut” be causing the skin issues? That is one thing to look at. I would recommend also treating the skin issues topically while supporting the GI issues. I know how much I drive myself crazy if I’m itching all over.
Thanks Doctor❤
Thank you Doctor ❤️
@@drlindsaybutzer Many thanks, Dr. Lindsay! 🙏❤️
What about testing in an effort to discover the primary cause (e.g., immunoglobulins; autoimmune disorders; and allergy testing to rule out environmental causes like dust mites, etc., etc.). As opposed to taking medications and frequent bathing for the rest of their lives?
Most scratch because they corn and the red and green dye that is in alot of dogfoods,I was told this by a vet.once I found food with those products My dogs healed up quit scratching and hair grew back.just saying
I’ve spent $10s of thousands of dollars on Apaquil for my boxer years ago. I feel like the vet ripped me off years ago!
Oh dang yes that is expensive i made a video on some other things you can buy over the counter!
I've run into a few RUclips channels in the last 2 weeks saying that Apoquel has caused deaths in dogs and should be avoided.
Cytopoint as well
Thanks for this helpful information.
Get the little Yorkie off all chicken! Even treats with chicken. I only feed Turkey and sweet potato by Nutro. Give half of Zyrtec.
Try to get her off chicken. Get her on the doggie recipe , cooked ground turkey, a lil fish oil, pumpkin and a lil rice. Get on RUclips and for the turkey recipe for dogs with allergies
After washing, we pour down apple cider vinegar + water (50% apple cider vinegar + 50% water) mix on dogs skin. We don't wash away it and dry the dog afterwards. Finally, use coconut oil to give some massage after she dried. So far this made the biggest difference with the smallest budget. I still want to try aloe vera (harvest from plant leave) on her red paws.
Try taking the dog off dry kibble and giving it home prepared food. You can try preparing a mixture of mince meat, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes and brown rice. Sardines are also great for the dog's skin. Some vegetables like carrots are also good.
Good, concise video.
I have a ridgeback and he scratches near his tail and I give him 2.5 tablets of benadryl. I hope this helps. I love your show and you are precious. Keep coming with more helpful hints.

I use to too give Benadryl, vet said give Zyrtec instead, because Benadryl makes them drowsey. Huh...who knew? So, I now give Zyrtec instead.
You had me at more baths and a higher dose of Benadryl.. TY
Does apoquel cause kidney problems used for a long time?
Our experience, Apoquel is horrible. Especially, if your dog has been diagnosed with cancer.
You should be teaching at veterinary school Excellent video!

Dr Bronners Soap. I am currently using the peppermint one on my dog that s itching bad. It also deters fleas and makes her fur soo soft now. Also in between baths can rub coconut oil on dog preferably organic. Helps against skin infections also.

How do I keep my dog from getting pimples on their face. And what should I put on it to heal it and make them go away?
Hey, Pimples on the face could be from too much oil and dirt building up in pores. Naked dog breeds like Chinese crested get this. If your dog has skin scabs and pus on the face could be a bad infection and you need to go to your local vet to have them culture it and start your pet on antibiotics for now to help. Also, gentle baths of the face using a washcloth and head and shoulders shampoo may help in the meantime. I hope this helped!
And can be caused by plastic bowls!
