No one could play guitar like Jerry Garcia...completely singular in every note, and it’s one of my favorite sounds in the world. Electric..acoustic...matters not.
I remember the 85 version of this one at Chula Vista literally brought tears to my eyes (Jerry sang all lyrics instead of trading with Bob for those electric versions to the best of my recollection) I was a taper and the sound from that show in particular was just stunning. This is one of my favorite Dylan tunes but in the hands of the GD folks it is on an entirely other plain of transcendence.
More proof that Phil was an absolutely genius composer. Even stripped down like this without keyboards and drums, he is nothing but unique in his approach. RIP legend
This is a proof that these guys are musicians in the top of the line. They could take on anything from real rock to folk songs and balads and they do it with pure PERFECTION. Man i love them so much, they are the best!
i was working 2nd shift in a factory, when a storm blew out the power. sent home to find my order of backstage pass and one from the vault arrived!!! smoked up some weed and spent the rest of the night GETTING ON THE BUS !!!!!! and this is where it got me????? hahahah LOVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD !!!!!
Never took and drugs but a longong standing Dead Head. I never seen this before and it will certainly be on my regular playlist DIOLCH 🏴 thanks are there More from the session
Originally in color, this was video taped for the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary at Madison Square Garden in October of 1992. Plans were for at least Jerry to perform live, but he collapsed August and an entire fall tour was canceled, so they taped this one song. Apparently the "powers that be" (GD Management) felt that Jerry didn't look to good in color...
Know matter how bad ur day is or life. The grateful dead makes it all better, tears of joy goosebumps all over ur body and soul. For a brief moment in this fucked world everything's okay. May this music touch billions more for generations . Dead never die!!!!!
I'll never ever ever ever forget where I was when I first heard/saw this. It was in 93' when Backstage Pass came out and it was in my bedroom. Smoked a bowl of some kind bud and zoned the fuck out.
I doubt any three people have logged more hours playing together than these guys. Moments like this show their professionalism, musicianship, skill, and heart/soul all in one. Anyone who trash talks these guys just doesn’t respect music.
Wow!!! All I can say is WOW!!! Where have I been?? How have I missed this?? This is an instant classic, in my humble opinion!! Jerry is absolutely at the top of his game. I have goosebumps...
The freaking genius of Dylan lyrics enchanted the fellas. Only thang close is hunter lyrics. I've heard Phil sing this like 2 years ago.. honestly I think my favorite live version was Stu Allen I'm DH since 77, as much as I miss those that are gone, I appreciate those still with us. Dead and Co last year at Red Rock. Of course this year last shows in SF. But more than the shows that even DSO lay down, with guests like Bobby, Peter it doesn't matter. It's my tribe, there isn't anything like our DH community on this planet. I'm only DH since 77, and yes I'm a Cornell/Ithica WTF kinda guy for my 2nd GD show. Not sure where I was heading with that lol, so now I'm 67, should Bobby or Phil or DSO or Stu or blah blah blah carry on with GD music.. well I'm in. Hopefully c c.u.all at the Warfield soon for DSO Anything else is a freaking bonus
Anyone got the entire movie on here? So many childhood memories. I was born in '97, 2 years after Jerry died. I remember (very vaguely) sitting in my house, at only 5 years old, watching Backstage pass. It was unlike anything else.
While this particular song isn't on there, you may want to give this one a listen, it's the band without the drummers, playing mostly acoustic, and they sound remarkably good, especially considering how far they would fall in the coming months. archive.org/details/paf1994-09-24.matrix.sirmick.78005.flac16/phil94-09-24d1t02.flac
So much soul, feeling, ability, inventiveness and a combined musical knowledge and history makes this spontaneous, slightly loose version a gem. For those of us old enough to have been aware of Dylan as a contemporary, this song has always been outstandingly poignant and true. This simply can't be known or felt as much by a much younger person. I feel lucky to have grown up with these guys. There is nothing else like it now.
First time I've heard this song thank goodness for RUclips and the beautiful soul who posted it. . Love you guys forever. Mojo Murillo in Sacramento, CA
I've always loved Jerry Garcia. But in a more or less vague way. Never really seen him up close, even on film. I just fell in love with this sweet person.
Good for you Alison. I fell in love with the Grateful Dead in 1983 at the US Festival. After that I saw them 96 times not including different versions of the band. I miss Jerry but I have his likeness tattooed on my back. Love you you guys forever.
Jerry fan... Of course He appreciated admiration by his fans. Dylan also refused the prophet robe Jerry knew was good All the best ones deal with it, humbly. I never saw him live but I play a lot like him, in that he understood 'fills'as undeniable emotion
She's got everything she needs, she's an artist, she don't look back. Takes the dark out of the nighttime, she paints the daytime black. You will start out standing, proud to steal her anything she sees. But you will wind up peeking through a key hole, down upon your bended knees. She never stumbles, she's got no place to fall. She's nobody's child, the law can't touch her at all. She wears an Egyptian ring, that sparkles before she speaks. She's a hypnotist collector, you are a walking antique. Bow down to her on Sunday, salute her when her birthday comes. For Halloween but her a trumpet, and for Christmas, buy her drums. She's got everything she needs, she's an artist, she don't look back. Takes the dark out of the nighttime, you know she paints the daytime black.

@@MrAM4D3U5 there’s another clip from this session where Bob says Jerry is straight here and how much fun it was because of that. ruclips.net/video/1oNIKpIS3tg/видео.html
this was recorded at Club Front in 1992, for use in Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert special. Garcia was supposed to perform at the event, but couldn't due to bad health problems.
I love this version. It has a livelier and folky feel which benefits from the vocal switch off. They always played it at a slower tempo with full band which sort of brought out a certain feel that made it even bluesier, but I love it this way too. Imagine being at some outdoor fire with them playing and it certainly couldn’t get much better than that.

I believe it was video taped at Front Street in San Rafael, but I may be wrong about this. I saw it once in color at the Grateful Dead office and thought it was great. I also believe it was directed by long time Grateful Dead live video director, Len Dell'Amico. Date would be late September or more likely early October of 1992.
Phil just casually dropping some soft, sweet, bass lines.
NOBODY could cover Bob like these boys could. Immaculate!
We'll miss you Phil! ❤

❤ Phil ❤️ thanks for filling my ears with the best bass lines for the last 40 years.

Phil Lesh is a wonderful bassist.
He was classically trained to be a composer. I can hear it in his music
That sweet sweet lead bass
Love how you can hear all three instruments crystal clear, helps me hear better what they’re doing in full electric shows.
Rest in paradise, Phil. May the four winds blow you safely home⚡️
This is the song my wife and I danced to at our wedding.
Awwww
This is a gem. How am I just seeing this for the first time?!?!
I just listen to it over and over. Such great lyrics

I think that's why I fell in love with them. While you're listening everything is gonna be okay
There should be a "Love" button. I hate to just "Like" this one. Beautiful!
Saw a couple hundred shows, this really. Was my fav song they covered.
The way they look at each other at the end like “did we get it?” They look like their afraid they knock something over if they move
Ahhh….listen to the way Phil lilts and glides right off the ground into the very air

Jerry and Willie Nelson shared an extraordinary ability to improvise around a melody. Shame those two never worked together.

Great stuff. I got the chance to see the Dead perform this song twice in Richmond and Philly in 1985 - what a treat. Jerry sang lead.
