- ABS Wheel Sensor Cleaning: 30 to 90 minutes. ($3)
In this video I begin to troubleshoot an ABS fault issue. My first step is to clean all the wheel sensors. In some cars this can be done with the car on wheel ramps, some cars you will need to remove each wheel to access the sensors.
This procedure was done on a 2003 Jaguar XJ8.

Nice video :-) My XJ X350 was showing intermittent ABS failures, so checking on the ODB showed ABS failures on the right rear wheel. After removing the sensor I found some polishing on one area on the toothed ABS rotor, showing that it was rubbing against the sensor, but only in one place. Apparently this is caused by rust getting behind the rotor and forcing it to expand unevenly. I just cleaned up the old sensor, used a wire brush on the rotor to clean it up, washed everything down and then reinstalled the sensor, but shimmed it out with a simple washer to increase the gap between the sensor and the rotor, but only by about 1mm. My ABS issues are now a thing of the past 🙂
Wow! Nice work, thanks for sharing.
Very good, very detailed. Never had anyone explain how the speed sensor works. This guy is a GEM for us shade-tree mechanics. Good job, Robert!
+Bob Caldwell cool, thanks for watching.
Hi Robert, great video my friend.
The ABS, traction & stability lights came up on my beloved '98 XJR. Local dealer went into doom & gloom mode quoting big bucks. Followed your instruction and boom, lights went out immediately & haven't come back!
I can't tell you how happy I am!!!
For reference to others, I cleaned up all 4 sensors inside one hour. Wheels off one by one. Front right was wedged in tight, but some WD40 & a lot of wiggling about got it out. Quite a simple job really.
Many thanks from the UK & good luck with your new POTUS!
Thanks for sharing. Seems like we'll have a wild ride.
Nice Vid Robert - this problem is the infamous broken solder joint on the ABS module - it produces exactly the syptoms you described at the start of the video. Remove cover (not an easy job) and you will almost certainly see the main connector to the circuit board broken - little bit of solder and job done. Info was very useful for those looking to clean/fix wheel sensors. Keep em comin!
Yes I did end up removing the module and solder the two power leads. I did not open the box, just drilled 2 small holes in it where the connector goes in (top side) and soldered through the holes. It was easier drilling the small holes than trying to tear open the top.
I linked a video to it in the comment section. Thanks for the information.

I just picked up a Jaguar XJ8 yesterday and your videos are very helpful keep them going my guy
cool, thanks for watching.
Truly excellent. Thorough, good pace, fine distinctions, and so on. Way, way above average for RUclips (or anything free, for that matter). Go Robert!
+Thomas Johnson thanks for watching.
Mr Robert, I am binge watching your videos. Thanks for the time, talent ,and treasure.
+Terry L Britt thank you for watching
Great video Robert. This could save someone heaps of cash instead of putting a jag through a main dealer. Here in the UK a "abs" light on is a instant MOT fail. One little thing Jaguar is actually spoken as "Jag U R". They are great cars esp in supercharged form. Enjoying your new videos. Thanks buddy.
Thank you for watching.
Good information for me. I just bought a 98 xj8 jag with abs light on . thanks for the video
You are welcome.
I have learned more from you than everybody else put together.
Thanks for the kind words.
Great Vid. Very well explained, I will check mine for these issues, Thank You Robert.
+HJ Yeager thank you for watching.
Thanks Robert , had my XJR coded to front left hand sensor, after watching this it's looks a relatively straight forward job.
Thanks for watching
Hi, Broke the bloody thing, have a four day wait for a replacement and the car was built 6 miles away !
Can I ask ,, Any experience changing a (bank 2 oxygen sensor ?)
Thanks Elliot
I should point out if your battery is low the ABS light will come on in the same way you described. If you trickle charge the battery or take it for a long drive you can cure the problem. I often go away for several weeks and frequently have the problem. Trickle charge solves it. It’s a jaguar problem
Thanks for sharing.
Hi RobertI found you when I was working on my Volvo, I love your Videos , they are so well done , and you explain the work so well . Now I am working on a Jaguar XJ8 and saw this video, again you did a superb job, thanks for helping me AGAIN .!!!!!!!!!!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
Great common sense, down to earth, easy to understand vid's. Great job Robert! I found a 2002 Jaguar XJ8 with 52000 actual miles. Fantastic car with quality like nothing I've ever seen or owned. Your vid's are a great help to cover things that I need to replace or know about the "basics" of this vehicle. Thank you!! Bill Whitsell, Whitesville, KY
Hey Bill, good to read that you found a nice one. I like the Volvo 960 which is a comparable vehicle. I found one of them 11 years old with 53,000 miles on it. Man that thing was nice. I'm about to do a front brake job in the next day or two. I have a brake job video already up that will work on these cars. ATE calipers.
Excellent job as usual, you're great at working on cars and explaining as well.
Thanks.
you are welcome. thanks for watching.
Love your videos, The fact that you stay focused on the job at hand. Good job👍🏿

I was about to drop a ton of money to get this done, thanks so much!

Excellent! Very Helpful. Well presented, clear, thorough, and easy to understand.
+Robert Glendenning Thanks for watching.
enjoy the details and the shortcuts thanks. oh yea and safety first😊
Glad you liked it!
This guy knows his shit. I usually clean the sensors once a year, but I spray some alloy cleaner on a rag and rub the sensors clean. I'm not to keen on putting vaseline on the connectors, though. If you put a little to much on it and get it in the connector, you'll foul up the contacts.
FirmCat Thanks for sharing and watching.
It's dielectric grease . It's formulated to stop condensation/ corrosion, build up for any electrical connection
Thanks! Excellent Vid! I will use this info to attack my sensors on my 1997 XK8 this weekend.
Good deal. Thanks for watching.
Robert I have a Jaguar X300 1995 have done the soldering joints on the ABS unit. Thanks for the info! on this Jaguar I am working on the ABS sensor is one piece with the cable and shielded cable over the top. You cannot remove the sensors to check without removing the wiring?
Sadly, I don't know.
well that was simple enough car has same issue & been in storage for winter so this is tomorrows project. the other issue is left cam sensor is leaking oil through the crimp on sensor itself ! I may only clean all oil residue & work a gas & oil tank repair paste around the seam in hope to cure the issue. Don't want to remove the whole valve cover assembly to replace the sensor as it's fine otherwise.
OK
@@RobertDIY Just wanted to say thanks for video explanation ! I have done as you explained & happy to say the problem is solved. Only I drilled a 5/8 hole & used a tight rubber plug to fill the hole afterwards. thanks again ! gotta keep these ol girls in top shape!
Excellent video and very helpful! Thanks for posting it!
You are welcome
You Sir just saved my a lot of money. Excellent video. Thank you.
+dennis sweeney you are welcome.
Thanks, i have to do this job and this made it much easier for me!
You're welcome!
Your videos are very helpful also i have a 1998 XJR with Fault codes PO1637 ,P1720, P1797, P1748, And my transmission is stuck in first gear please help
How can I help you with that?
I have no answer to your codes and transmission, but a thing to try first is to loosen the minus cable on the battery. Then wait for a couple of hours and reconnect. Next thing to try is to loosen both the plus and minus cables and put the cables together for some seconds, then reconnect them to the battery. And as always, check the battery and change to a new one if needed.
Hey, I watch both of your videos on how to fix the tail and headlight bulbs and found it very helpful. I have a Jaguar x-type 2003 and would like to know what type of bulbs to buy for the brake lights and low beams.
Thanks
Tyrone Robinson jr Check the owners manual. I suggest you get the bulbs from the dealer if you can, sometimes after market bulbs cause issues.
So did cleaning the sensors fix your problem or did you have to get into the abs control module?
Hi. I have a 2006 Stype Jaguar 3.0 V6. My cooling g fan is running on high speed. My radiator hose pop. Got it fix, but for whatever reason, my cooling fan does not want to run normal again... HELP HELP . Once I start the car it runs high. Turn it off it stops.

Hello Robert. Thanks for the video. Very good info. I did not find your response to my colleagues question below. Did the lights go off and the problem get fixed or did you have to move on to the next troubleshooting level? Thanks.
Answer should be in the comments. I had to pull the module and solder the pins.

Hey Robert do you know where to find the ABS Relay in 2001 Jaguar XJR??? My ABS pump won't shut off when the ignition is off so I pulled the switch out of the Module to turn off so doesn't kill battery. I cannot find where the Relay is. I want to see if it is faulty and that's why power continues to be sent to the ABS pump/Module . Let me know what you think?? Thanks...
No I don't. Check on the Jaguar forum.
tip: give those bolts a few gentle taps before you shear them off :-)

Hi Robert, I'm having an ABS trac light on with my 1996 Volvo 850 t5. At first, the ABS light would come on when the module was hot. As per your recommendation I sent my module to Midwest ABS and Matt fixed the problem that was causing the light to come on when the unit would get hot. Since then, Volvo replaced the drivers side CV axle and spliced the wheel sensor wire using a Butt connection. Matt said that I have to solder the connection which I did. But the light is still coming on. Any suggestions. Thank you, Paul. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Back to winter to sit down with a cup of tea and watch your videos to learn every nut and bolt in my Volvo.
Hey Paul, I would request that Volvo replace the ABS wire harness if they damaged it. :(
Hey Robert i have an 06 xj8 with dsc not available. Would that be the same problem?
I have no idea. Check on a Jaguar forum.
excellent thanks for explaining it
Thanks for watching.
Gonna replace abs Modular, The simplest way I know is to match #s and pick up Two from Junk yard.lol 12-40 $.
ok
Very informative video thanks!

Hi Robert awesome video. I am getting the stability control fail message but not the abs light. It mainly comes on in raining day and when I wash my car. Do you think cleaning the sensors will help my problem?
I don't even know what kind of car you have.
@@RobertDIY oh... I have a 1999 Jaguar xk8.
I'd check them first.
Ok thanks.
I cleaned the wheel sensors last weekend still get the error message. Do you have any next steps?

+Gavin Palmer nope.
+Robert DIY ok thanks good video
I have 2001 Jaguar xjr with ABS/ trac lights on for about the last 2 years. The ABS helps traction when roads are slippery so I leave my Jaguar in the garage on those days
