Just paid £245 ($320) for my local BMW dealer to spend 2 days for diagnosis and replacement of Speed Sensor and front ABS Pulse transmitter! If that wasn't enough of an insult, my biege carpets are covered in muck and the front seat is marked. For that price I could have bought a diagnostic tool and the sensors, assuming they needed replacing in the first place. "It always pays to go to an Authorised Dealer.........................NOT!" Great video, thank you, I'll forward to the dealership!
Nice video on replacing the wheel speed sensors but you never talked about how to clean the tone ring.I'm quite disappointed in that. Your title says ABS wheel sensor replacement and sensor ring cleaning there is no ring cleaning here at all what happened?
@@MicPoitrasexactly what im doing and was hoping for a better solution, i have a ton of what looks like wheel bearing grease and metal shavings in mine
IMHO you should have looked down into the hole were the sensor came out of and clean all of the teeth on the gear by rotating the rotor around until all have been cleaned. Thank you for posting the video.
Thanks Nathan , I really like your step by step video. Please continue to pass your knowledge to us with your other videos. New BMW owner. Watching your videos.
I must have missed the part where you cleaned the ring ? I had an issue with my E81 where the ring was distorted by rust on the cv joint expanding the circumference that the ring sits on. You can apparently remove and replace just the ring, cleaning the cv outer shell of rust but I decided to change the whole half-shaft instead as I expected rust would return quickly in the UK climate. For a short-term fix I slid a washer under the sensor retaining bolt to position the hall effect probe slightly further from the ring. This worked for me as an expedient.
Just putting it on the contact surface which will be the mounting flange. That will ensure it is easy to remove but you aren't coating the whole sensor body which would just pick up dirt.
How do you get the sensor light to turn off afterwards? Will it automatically after the sensors are cleaned turn off or do you have to go to a workshop with a reader to reset it? Thanks!
Exactly what I needed. I had to drill out the sensor and replace it with a new one. The ABS light went off but then my brakes pulsated and the light came back on. I didn't know the sensor was magnets so I most likely left some metal shaving in the slot that caused it to go on and off intermittently.
Can i install an abs sensor on it's opposite side? For example installing a drivers side sensor on the passengers side. Will it have different connectors, or is there anything else that might prevent me from doing so
In my E39, rain water in the street disconnects the speedometer and the automatic gearbox stop working properly. I do not have the proper scanner. I need to find out which sensor is bad in order to replace it. Some of the wire connector broke. I repaired it but I hope there is no polarity involved as I do not know which way the pair of wires of the sensor should be connected. Any advise?
I own a bmw e92 320d 2011 and I have the red tyre symbol showing all the time and unable to reset it using the manual. Could it be the sensor requires cleaning to solve the issue?
I don't like any pad that is not aggressive on disc. The OEM metallic type pad is nice and aggressive and is constantly skimming the disc to keep it true. Cast iron always shifts around, the higher quality iron mix and treatments to a lesser extent. Put in a pad that takes nothing or minimal off the disc (like ceramic) and you end up with a pulsing pedal. I usually get two pads per disc and I don't bother skimming inbetween. In regards to the ABS sensors, don't be scared of the cheap chinese ABS sensors. I bought a complete set for $60 from Bapmic and they work perfect.
@4:20 The old "tighten first then loosen" bolt routine. I do that with every bolt, screw, nut on my cars, irrelevant it just makes life a lot easier. Don't see many mechanics doing that. They go straight on gorilla mode to get bolts loosened. 🤨
Front end or rear? If it's the front the you might have a tone ring (which is actually a disc configuration) and that is integral to the wheel hub. Does the speed sensor mount parallel to the axis of the wheel? If so then the tone ring is in the wheel hub.
Hi Nathan, I've got a similar problem with e92 330i. The code is showing up on right hand side rear wheel. I've swapped the sensor with a brand new one, but the error still shows up and DSC/ ABS doesnt work. What would be the next step? Changing the bearing? Kamil
Liked the information you shared. You could edit this to about 4 minutes instead of 10; I don’t need to watch you Jack up your car from across the shop. BTW, I covet your garage.
ABS and Stabilitrak light are on after somebody used my car to jump off another car. Would the best suggestion be to take it to a shop to do computer diagnostics?
This was an informative video which will motivate people to work on their own vehicles but in the world of mechanics we use torque specs. If you do not properly torque a bolt you are liable for a person's life. CYA and at least put a disclaimer such as "Follow your manufacturer's torque specs".
If it's not on the axle it might be in the wheel hub if it's the front end? My BMW E63 front ring is in the wheel hub. Not so easy to clean and you will probably need a new wheel hub assembly.
God I fucking hate microfiber. That sound just makes my skin crawl, not to mention the way it feels when you touch it. Even thinking about it is awful. Great video though.

Sometimes I’m very thankful when I’m looking for common failure items on my e39 and one of Nathan’s videos comes up
How about cleaning it with a contact spray cleaner?

Yup, no ring cleaning except ' maybe blow it out w air'.
Should you apply multi purpose grease to the abs speed sensor before inserting into the hole? Thanks.

Good lesson, though not much would have been lost by cutting the video's first three minutes.
must be for youtube algo
Good video! Canned air? WD 40? not so sure about that but nice step by step!!!
To maybe avoid having to check all the sensors would a dirty sensor be most likely to be on a front or rear wheel?

Does the ABS light on in the dashboard before cleaning it up?
can brake cleaner be used for cleaning?
Could this be the reason my abs and trac lights come on randomly

Check if it says left or right when you buy them.

Could this be the cause of a dbc malfunction as well?
yes
