15 years ago as a teenager I was bawling my eyes out playing the original game myself. Today as a grown ass adult I'm bawling my eyes out watching this romhack spiritual successor. Thank you, Zwiggo, for showcasing all these games with dedicated narration.
Yeah I remember SOBBING with the Gardevoir storyline. SPOILER BELOW And then it turned out it wasn't even our gardevoir... still made me cry when our character was really gonna leave everyone behind tho. Bruh
still sobbing horrendously everytime I watch any video with the mc poke disappearing in a ball of light on either fuckin game lemme tell ya. That and Gengar's bloody redemption arc too.
The writer of this ROM clearly gets the storytelling style of PMD, and it makes me so happy to see. On top of that, your narration of the story is incredible. I never expected to cry over hearing someone narrate a pokemon game, but almost anything PMD can bring out so much emotion in me.
That story was absolutely a 10/10. Feels like it captures the PMD vibe perfectly and doesn't needlessly overcomplicate things or drift into edgy fanfic territory.
And then you realize that the big evil dark force was actually capitalism all along, and you must use all your friendship powers to destroy it! @fractalgem
that ending with the short picture of their reincarnations really gave that ending that extra oompf to make me sad but like the happy kind of sad kinda
I liked that the plot had a red herring - with the previous partner mentioning Toxtricity and Scrafty, and starting with an 'S', I initially thought the original partner was going to turn out to be Wartortle, back when she was a Squirtle. She even gave you a sendoff before the final battle!
I only guessed it was Sobble because the game kept insisting that our partner used to be meek and cried a lot. And then knowing Lord Maestrom was probably our last partner as well as a water type, it clicked. Though Squirtle did make me hesitate at some point, since the flashback talked about our partner being bulled by Scrafty and Toxtricity, which Wartotle said used to bully her before she became their leader.
It's clear as day that the person behind this rom hack is a true PMD fan. Everything about this rom hack captures the vibes of the games perfectly. If I wasn't told this was a hack, I could easily believe this was an official game because of how it hits every mark of the games. I love how they incorporate elements across all of the game, like the harmony scarves from Super, not to mention the connections of Alolan Ninetales being a descendent of the original one from Rescue Team, and Wigglytuff being the ancestor of the TDS guildmaster. Adding in Gen 8 elements like Dynamax was also amazing. I really do hope we'll get another Mystery Dungeon game one day.
@@sakuraa1770 Yeah but in the original game you can find an abandoned lab that's using a similar art style to RSE and similar assets, it's heavily implied the original game is far in the future. And then in Explorers you're a human that's from a future where humans use Pokemon, implying you're from the timeline of the main games. The two games can't really connect
The ending where Rockruff and Sobble wished for one wish to see us again once their life as pokemon ended and we see them reincarnated as our friends in Uva Academy, I teared up so much. Absolutely beautiful this Rom Hack capture what mystery dungeon is so well.
Honestly, when there was talk of flooding and another world, I half-expected Nihilego. (Which was very incorrect, but it would be very cool if any of the Ultra Beasts appeared in a PMD game.)
I thought it was Lugia because of the "maelstrom" part of his name, the final bosses of the Explorers and Rescue Team games were legendaries, and Kyogre was ruled out.
People often reflect their changed (and mostly cynical) points of view through these but it also means they lose sight of what made these "kid" games so good
"I will stop it! I will stop the tragedy of humans and Pokemon having to be split apart, over and over!" That line was so absolutely powerful - we always come back in the post-game, but it always felt like a compromise for the devs so the kids playing this game wouldn't feel so bad. Still, if you think about it, when the credits roll, these games ALWAYS end up in tragedy. You always leave, and your partner always ends up sad and alone. I feel the guy who made this romhack also felt that way, that the true ending is when the credits roll. The rest is just fanservice to give a happy ending, but the truth is the end is always like this. You save the world, but you have to leave it.
If we think about things in a more meta way, every PMD (even Super) game ends with us leaving when we decide to stop playing the game. Well, in Gates to Infinity the post-game is like "you can go between the human and Pokémon world" in that meta way, so it definitely ends like that. Hm, I guess if Spike Chunsoft ever makes a PMD game with a similar plot to The Bright Future, the backstory could be that the player went between the two worlds, but that their disappearances from the Pokémon world got longer on average, until eventually they seemed to be gone forever.
Man... Look at me. 16 years old, and i'm bawling my damn eyes out over Pokemon Mystery Dungeon... These games have touched me in ways no other game has... Other than Xenoblade 3... They taught 4 year old me how to laugh, cry, and... Well... Get me through the horrible system that was foster care. The bonds i built up with these damn pixels... Its something i wish Spike Chunsoft actually started doing again instead of pumping out Danganronpa after Danganronpa...
You're gonna be alright, kid. Whatever troubles you're facing right now will soon pass and you'll be a phenomenal adult. Always listen to what people have to say and stay true to yourself. You'll be alright
The partner taking desperate measures to get the hero back is an interesting concept. It reminds me of the Gates to Infinity post-game, but more fleshed-out.
Omggg this genuinely made me cry especially at the end, whoever made this rom hack definitely deserves their flowers and I am hoping to see them do more !! Also the way this video is made is super good, as usual

What is it about the mystery dungeon games that make me tear up.. even this one that’s not an actual Nintendo PMD game, the narrative made me tear up. Very well done video zwiggo, keep it up! Love seeing you put all this hard work and time into all these romhacks!
This was amazing! Like all mystery dungeon games, i, of course, cried at the last scene. But the pacing of the video was very well done made it to where you still gain an attachment to the partner. But the period of time between chapters wasnt too long
I just started the video and let me tell you....the story and set up is 10/10, like the small details, so good, and it really make you feel like "what if...." kind of feeling.
Honestly that is suck a heartbreaking way to use Mystery dungeon writing to make for an effective villain. Taking the hero has to leave idea and showing the effects a partner can have is terrifying. Especially the idea of being so diluted to think they could keep other humans who come to save the world and have them listen to them and join them. It's horrifying and a really good motivation yet a twisted take on the games endings.
My my this is the best pokemon story i've ever heard, Iam really excited!! My heart is filled with inspiration!! Thank you for making this video!! Now i'll pray and do my best to make the most brilliant novel in my life!!
The original Explorers of Time made me cry like a baby in elementary school. The ensing of this rom hack probably would have made me do the same. A very well done story.
Epic and absolutely amazing story, that twist with sobble at the end along with the dynamax battle was amazing. Really wish they still made mystery dungeon games like this
Definitely a wonderful story. I only listened to this in the background and was teary eyed at certain points. This has a wonderful story to it that brought me back to the mind set of actually playing the PMD games again. Love it.
Rom hacking is genuinely such a treasure for people that enjoy older games. Genuine respect to the people that make them and make them available to people, even the ones that aren’t great.
Really glad I went and played this game, it genuinely felt rather moving even if part of me wishes they had just brought Sobble with him back to the human world the first time, I think in the end it all worked out for the best.
As a child playing pmd i dont think anything has ever topped what i felt finishing the game for the first time- i cried so hard 😅😢 oh to go back and experience it again for the first time This is such a lovely successor, and the sobble reveal really tugged at my heart.
I didn't think this rom hack was gonna hit like the original, It's been so many years since a PMD has made me cry, This was so well written. It took me back to the feelings I had when I played the original.
You know...woth all the pokemon this almost feels like it could be connected to gen...8 pmd while referring to a gen 7 prequel which is still a sequel to the entire pmd...and its just beautiful
That was great. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to see this story without having to play a goddamn game style I dislike. It's a pretty amazing story, but I have to give the creator all the credot for including so many Pokémon with S to mess with us after the Tapu Koko stuff. Silvally and Squirtle, specifically, were great for trying to make the player think they were the forgotten partner.
I just played it and Its like a 3-5 hour playthrough. And since there's no EXP or Treasure Town so most of the fat is trimmed out anyway. Plus they included the move selection shortcut from GTI and Super MD. The difficulty is also not very high, like I think I only used 1 reviver seed the whole game and that was on the final boss fight. TL;DR the gameplay is very streamlined and almost as painless as it can get in this romhack.
Well I got good and bad news, the next patch is still with no ETA but the creator is still working on it. Also there's a Twitter account which the creator of that modded game version gives updates sometimes. Last time they posted was in December.

Yeah, thought I was the only one as a kid who just never beat the game, the groudon dungeon was already hard enough just getting to him, and then when I got there, I always lost, few years ago as an adult I went back to the game just tô say I managed to Finish it Lol
The story is pretty good, the gameplay though is a walk in the park. I get the fact that the creator wants the story to be the main focus, but it's too incredibly easy
i cried playing all versions from red, blue, time, and darkness! and on this romhack i also cried. PMD is so beautiful im glad it was given this futuristic twist
Maybe my comment got late here but let me tell you my man, PMD has some of the best soundtracks (in my opinion) that's a spin-off game. I really hope we get more OG PMD games in the future. I also hope to see a continuation of Pokemon Conquest or maybe a Remake. Always great content bro, keep up the good work, best wishes for you c:

I completely agree! It felt like a very natural progression for PMD. It’s kinda crazy how believable this game would be if you told me it was official

Yeah, thought I was the only one as a kid who just never beat the game, the groudon dungeon was already hard enough just getting to him, and then when I got there, I always lost, few years ago as an adult I went back to the game just tô say I managed to Finish it Lol
@@evertonferreira757 Yeah, I beat it as a teenager, and I was just thinking ‘Why is this final dungeon so long!? And where did the balancing go!?’
The story is pretty good, the gameplay though is a walk in the park. I get the fact that the creator wants the story to be the main focus, but it's too incredibly easy
no way i just watched 1 hour of pmd
Lord Maelstrom is perhaps a representation of toxic attatchment.
i cried playing all versions from red, blue, time, and darkness! and on this romhack i also cried. PMD is so beautiful im glad it was given this futuristic twist
Wow need to play right now!
I remember getting a used copy of Red Mystery Dungeon and I had no idea what it was about. The games are so fantastic.
By the looks of that final cutscene, I'd say their wish got granted.
The creator must be cooking the paldea version of this story xD
