Hey Jrose. Anyway you could mention the level up group as you talk about the Pokémon stats during the beginning of the video every time? It would help us trying to guess how good the Pokémon will do.thanks.
@@harrisontownsend910creates an interesting idea. While Kakuna only gets Poison Sting from evolving from Weedle, should it be given the move? If not, how far can it go?
If I had a nickel for every time psywave did zero damage to a marine mammal Pokémon in a JRose11 solo run, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't much, but it's weird it happened twice.
Can y’all just let Dewgong have this W? Everyone knows it’s outclassed, but that actually has no bearing in a run like this because there’s no opportunity cost. The point is that because it’s outclassed and generally forgotten, people might not expect it to do so well.
RE The Psywave glitch: the opponent’s Psywave mistakenly does not discard 0 when it rolls 0, whereas the player’s Psywave properly rerolls. This can even happen in link battles, desyncing the RNG between the two games. The specific odds of Sabrina’s Alakazam doing 0 damage is about 1/65
So glad to see Dewgong doing well. 7 year old me searched the world for it cause I instantly loved it but didn’t know about Seafoam Island right away. Definitely in my Top 5 of Gen1 Favorites
Contrary to belief, the ice type was NOT designed to be a glass-cannon--it was actually more of a special version of the rock typing: Bulky and built for drawn-out battles. While they have weaknesses & few resists, the trade off is that if you take too long to defeat them, you're screwed because freeze is the most powerful debuff in the game, and essentially an instant KO in gen 1. They just sit there and take non-super effective hits while fishing for freezes. Rock & fighting were also not very prominent attacking types in gen 1 (rock had only two attacks and fighting's best move was the Hitmonlee-exclusive base 85 High-Jump-Kick). However due to freeze clause + more powerful & abundant rock & fighting coverage in the newer games, Ice sadly isn't very good competitively; design-wise, it's a great late-game typing though!
I guess by "few" resists you meana single fucking one... To Ice itself!!! If what you say about the intended design is true, the missed the mark by about a fucking hemisphere of distance
I don’t think this is the case. Ice was supposed to be a complimentary type like rock. They exist because they wanted Pokemon that represented mountain (ground + rock) and ?? (water + ice) - this was why they were slapped onto other types. Balance was not too much of a thought in these games. They were supposed to be stand-alone at the time.
you guys are also missing something important. while ice for a pokemon is lackluster, ice moves were AMAZING. being the primary choice against dragon, and its utility against grass, basically cemented fire as complete trash back in gen 1.
Dewgong is seriously a jack of all trades. Good typing, can learn good moves, none of it's stats are great, but they're all good enough, it's not deficient in any stat, and it can get past Brock, Misty and Rival 2, the main early game walls. Definitely just a good all around Mon. It's one thing is that it doesn't have crazy coverage, it can't learn Thunderbolt like Starmie for example, but it does have some physical atk that makes it viable against opponents with high special, so it's flexible in that way.
I love how you get Aurora Beam at level 1, and you have to wait 34 more levels to get another attacking move and it's... Aurora Beam. It's clear these pokemon weren't designed to be used this early 😅
Yep! Was definitely designed that way so trainers would just have the level 1 moveset on evovled pokemon whenever you ran into them. For example, rival Gyarados having Dragon Rage at low levels
That psywave dealing 0 damage is a potentially game breaking bug. In pvp battles instead of (0 to level x 1.5) it is (1 to level x 1.5) depending on the observer. This can cause a desync causing incredibly weird glitches needing a reset. The move used to be banned in Pokemon Showdown until another desync bug was found for counter, after which both moves were patched in Showdown to be made legal again.

Dewgong hitting the A-Tier as a sleeper hit...AWESOME! I like how this came out by the way. Also I think this is one of your SHORTER videos that isn't MEANT to be a quickie. Funny how that plays to the length-to-difficulty curve.
That 0 damage psywave has happened to you before. I remember it was because of you, that i found out it could actually do 0 damage in rby only. Dewgong and Seel are my favorites of gen 1, and the latter is my favorite~ Great to see more vids from you!
I’ve been waiting for this one because Dewgong is the Pokémon I used when I tried out doing one of these runs myself. It ended up being very good but not as good as Cloyster. I think I picked squirtle as the rival’s starter but Bulbasaur actually is the correct choice. It’s not about “which starter is hardest” it’s “which one has a type advantage over you”. Squirtle gets ice moves too, but you still pick Bulbasaur as the opponent.
Ice being one of my favorite types, and seel being one of my aunt's favorite pokemon (Squirtle is her favorite) this run was so enjoyable to watch dewgong absolutely shred through the game!! Well done jrose, Shawn, and Sean? Couldn't see how they were spelled but well done team 😂❤ keep up the great work y'all and welcome to new Sean!
The reason nobody likes dewgong is because it just got nerfed in gen 2. that 95 special went all the way down to 70 special attack. In gen 1 it's just a faster lapras. Also, it really suffers from the same problem as Tentacruel being a surf only mon. Why would you use them instead of the pokemon you used to surf. Considering they're so late game its never gonna be worth it to train them up because of all of the missed stat experience. Jrose never has to consider stat experience, but if you're doing a playthrough, then it makes a big difference.
everytime Jrose says the word Trolly, my mind instantly goes to Trolli Sour Bright Crawler Gummies... maybe I am biased though because they're one of my favorite candies.
It's true. I recently used a Starmie in my Blue playthrough and it one shotted many opponents in team rocket and it did a lot of work for me. Starmie is easily the best water type especially because of its typing and movepool.
I am not appreciating the scrolling list at the end of the videos. I understand why it is done as the list is so big, but I definitely liked it more when there was a bit of the list and you could see where the new entrant ranked due to the insertion animation. Keep going Jrose!

Thank you for another great video. I always liked Dewgong. I wonder how fast you could beat Pokemon red or blue when you battle each gym leader and elite four member with a Pokemon of their own type(s) (so Brock with a rock-type, Misty with a water-type and so on). I think you can get at least one Pokemon that fits before every gym but for Brock.

@@calebjohnson9740 true in gen 1 ice is quite OP. There are no good fighting moves, no steel type, brock has no rock moves, and ice is the only solution to dragon.
This time of year for my job it's very slow. Time to go back and binge watch a bunch of Jrose videos. It's becoming a yearly thing for me to do this lol
After JRose finishes all the 151 pokemon, it'd be fun if he took the 6 best/fastest solo pokemon as a party, makes a team out of it, and then finds out how fast that team can beat the game. And then do the same with the 6 worst/slowest pokemon too.
Hey Jrose. I hate to say it, but I told you that Dewgong would do very good 😉 It's a reason why it is my second highest ranked Pokémon, just after Mewtwo, with a game-time of 2:42 I mean, even with the mishaps in this video, it got a decent time.
After years of experience doing this, I think Jrose11 has learned more and could probably come up with better strats for the previous Pokémon, possibly cutting the runs shorter.
So for psybeam it's a random number between 0 and 1.5x the pokemons level. So in your case Alakazam was level 43, so the highest damage is 65 (depending on rounding) so your options were 0 to 65 so you had 66 options and only 1 chance at 0 damage, or a 1/66 chance. Though you still have the 1/256 chance for the attack to miss.
The Psywave thing reminds me of another glitch. I’m not sure if this can happen against AI trainers, but if you use Psywave in a link battle, it has a chance to do 1 damage in the user’s game and 0 in the target’s. That causes the RNG in each player’s game to desync but that’s neither here nor there. My best guess is that the same thing can happen to Sabrina.
I really like Dewgong, it's biggest problem though is that it's just... a worse Lapras. Same defenses and a little faster, but 40 less HP, lower offensive stats and a worse movepool. Most of the time when both are available in a generation, Lapras is also available either as a gift or can be caught shortly after Seel/Dewgong is available. It does stand out in Gold/Silver, as it's one of the few pokemon that can learn Ice Beam by level, and it's great in Pokemon XD since it comes with Surf and Lapras isn't caught until the end-game dungeon.
It would be interesting to see you tackle full evolution lines. So starting with Seel and then evolving it into Dewgong through the course of the game. This feels like it would be especially good for pokémon like Starmie/Staryu who evolve through stones and, as such, learn no moves by level up after evolving.
11:35 in gen1 damage for psywave = 1 to x1,5 level user Example lv43 Alakazam can deal 1 to 64 damage. But, because of the code, only the player have a minimum of 1 damage for the attack, when it's the opponent the range goes from 0 to x1,5 level user. It also work this way in player vs player.
Hey Jrose!👋 Thank you for the amazing content as always, have you ever gave a thought about bringing a solo run to GDQ? Honestly, I'd love to see you on that stage, it would be an amazing change of pace if compared to the other runs that they've submitted up until now! Keep up the good content! :) P.S: welcome Shaun!
He might have said it wrong, but he meant that squirtle would have no effective moves against dewgong. At least against bulbasaur, the rival would have super effective moves against dewgong so it would be dangerous.
Squirtle just doesn't get anything that's actually problematic. Skull bash is the only unresisted attack that it learns. Normal type surf is not really the ticket.
I’d love to see a run where you have a Starmie from the beginning with the following moves: Psychic Surf Thunderbolt Ice Beam/Blizzard I’d love to see just how much faster you can complete the game with a full move set from the start
In Red and Blue, if you have a water typing with access to decent ice moves, you were doing all right. The dual ice typing turns grass into neutral damage and the water type does the same for fire, so your only real vulnerability is electric types which just don't really come up this Gen. All said, can't wait to see how this goes because Dewgong certainly isn't on any short lists for meta
Finally, I’ve been asking for a Dewgong run in the comments of every single video for a years AND ITS FINALLY HERE!! Thank you!! Missed opportunity to put “seal the deal” in the title tho

The problem is not that dewgong is Bad, the problem actually is that he doesn't do anything that other water types can't do better that it

Please let episode 100 be Kadabra! Let JRose be at his most hype and happiest.
Also Brock is getting a swift defeat by Level 1 Confusion!
For their starters, Agatha probably pick Bulbasuar, Lorelii picked squirtle, and lance picked charmander. Bruno was late and was given a machop
"Bubblebeam, Bubblebeam, living the Bubble Dream."
It has access to Double Team which is a badge boosting tech.
Jrose11 posting the afternoon before my exam? It is more likely than you might think!!!
Finally I have been binging the gen1 challenges and am glad to see dewgong get her day in the sun.
I need to go and catch some sleep. But no you had to release a new Video. Guess i will be tired at work tmr.
Lore-legit great, amirite?
Hey Jrose!👋 Thank you for the amazing content as always, have you ever gave a thought about bringing a solo run to GDQ? Honestly, I'd love to see you on that stage, it would be an amazing change of pace if compared to the other runs that they've submitted up until now! Keep up the good content! :)
P.S: welcome Shaun!
I like the phonetic playstation. Hopefully Shaun does an excellent job.
"Squirtle is weak to us, too"
--A man who has spent the past 3 years playing Gen 1 Pokemon virtually nonstop
He might have said it wrong, but he meant that squirtle would have no effective moves against dewgong. At least against bulbasaur, the rival would have super effective moves against dewgong so it would be dangerous.
Squirtle just doesn't get anything that's actually problematic. Skull bash is the only unresisted attack that it learns. Normal type surf is not really the ticket.
"Unfortunately, we don't have a badge boosting move."
Skull Bash: ☝️🤓
Skull Bash in Gen I doesn't modify its users stats. It's merely a 2-turn attack.
i feel vindicated having rocked a dewgong on my steam since 98
I’d love to see a run where you have a Starmie from the beginning with the following moves:
Psychic
Surf
Thunderbolt
Ice Beam/Blizzard
I’d love to see just how much faster you can complete the game with a full move set from the start
Ice does not resist Grass unfortunately
Let’s go! Finally my favourite Pokémon getting some love
Dewgong was very underrated in RBY. Useful if you wanted some Ice STAB, but it's hard to justify over a *free Lapras* lol
Dewgong was actually in my first ever pokemon red elite four team
Dewgong is one of if not my favorite Pokémon, love whenever Dewgong gets a win 🤩
Dewgong is also good in the Pokémon go meta it seems, it feels so random
Finally, I’ve been asking for a Dewgong run in the comments of every single video for a years AND ITS FINALLY HERE!! Thank you!! Missed opportunity to put “seal the deal” in the title tho
And some people didn't have faith in Dewgong because of irs base stats and movepool 😂. Dewgong is amazinf!
Dewgong, my absolute favorite pokemon over all. I looooove dewgong❤
