Got the Futur as well (in the matt finish). Love everything about that razor. The way it shaves, the weight en not in the least the look.

Agree with you about the Futur quality. It was my favourite till I got my Merkur Digress HD with brass adjuster. For me it is perfection. It does not have the design or ease of blade loading, and nothing sings like a Futur. I can get a better smoother shave however with the Digress. New sub
p.s. Its funny to see comments like "you should change your top 5, what about X or Y" This is this shavers opinion on "HIS" top 5, not yours or anyone else's. By all means give your opinion on your favourites, but they will be your own subjective choices.

Have you seen the Barbaros & Rocnel stainless steel adjustable? Seems similar to the Merkur Progress, but quite expensive.

Based on your recommendation I received the Merkur Futur razor yesterday and used it this morning. I already have the Feather and the Merkur 34c. I think the futur is a great design and a good shave but find the handle slippery and hard to hold on to. Just put some waterproof duct tape on the handle and see if that solves the problem. Never like the Feather but love the 34c for its simplicity, ease of handling especially around the nose area. Great price too. Will get back to you as I use the Futur more. Why pay extra for the gold?

I have a Muhle r41 that should be arriving any day soon, can't wait to get at it.

Your reason for making the R-41 #5 is my reason for making it #1. It is the most efficient razor I have ever used. Definitely not for beginners, but after going through many razors in my 3 1/2 years of D.E. shaving, this is the only one I now own.

You should try the Rockwell 6c or 6s on setting 6 it shaves just as efficient but less blade feel and more forgiving

The mild-mannered looking iKon Tech certainly will wake you up if you're not aware of it's capabilities. The Mühle R41 almost seems tame by comparison.

Thus far, the R41 is the only razor that gives me BBS. Only issue is, I shaved about 2 to 3 days in a row on a few occasions with it and it can really wear out your skin. I'm selling my Future...needless to say.

Perhaps you could elaborate on the problem you pose of comparing across generations. I don't see how it applies to razors.
In Baseball, the problems is that you have no variables to control for the comparison, so it can't be a fair one. Ted Williams never tried to hit off of David Price.
That isn't anything like the situation you have comparing razors, because your face and blades are consistent throughout the comparison.

Blades were thicker back then though and razors were designed around those.

my number 1 is the Progress.
i used a Futur and then i sold it.
have you ever compared this 2 razors ?

    • @borbetomagus
      @borbetomagus 7 лет назад

The Merkur Progress has a blade gap range from 0.38mm to 1.12mm (which is similar to the Parker Variant and Rockwell 6S/6C), The Merkur Futur extends this blade gap range from 1.12mm to 1.75mm. It's too bad Merkur doesn't make this clear so individuals buying an adjustable safety razors will make the right choice for their needs.

Thank you for this review and your review of your top five vintage razors. My skin is sensitive in a way that precludes me from using aggressive razors like the Muhle 41 and the Merkur Futur. But I like that you are able to handle very aggressive razors. I have the Parker Variant. Last weekend at a Flea Market I picked up 3 Gillette Slim Adjustables. Never had one before. Sterilized, cleaned and polished them. My first shave (went cautiously with a Wilkinson Sword) was comfortable and close. I was somewhat stunned and amazed. It made my $57 Variant feel like a clunker by comparison. I'm beginning to think that Gillette, even though it was primarily interested in selling blades, engineered the best razors of all time. And that, with all due respect, Muhle, Merkur, Jagger, Parker and others are imitating Gillette. Trying to equal it. Hopefully trying to surpass Gillette, though I think that's unlikely. It's troubling that Gillette threw its own razors under the bus beginning, I believe, with the Trac II. They discarded their brilliant magnum opus. So brilliant that these razors last forever! You do good reviews, my man.

Scott R. Leslie thanks for the timely reply. I previously have used a 34c merkur in gold - do you think the muhle r41 will be a worthwhile upgrade? I like DE's because it's a fresh blade each time without me having to hone or strop - figured I should get the best modern DE, I love that the r41 is a simple 3 piece that screws the blade in snuggly. What do you think?

The futur is way too fat. The head and weight and price. Shaving the nose area with the future sucks. And no grips.
