Used the Wilkinson Classic plastic version for many years before I got interested in upgrading my shaving tools. I still think it's a very good and mild razor. Greetings and thanks...🎄.
Hi Kevy, thanks for this video. As an Indian I tried 3 types of Parker, but the material quality and finishing were not my choice. Edwin Jagger stands top in finishing and looks. Merkur is best for my shaving habit, quality and functionality is top notch.
An important tip for newbies: Don't immediately get rid of a product if you don't get along with it at first. You may find that you come to like it overtime. For over a year, I've been saying that Personna Lab Blues are some of the worst blades because no matter how careful I am, I always nick myself. But the other day, I put one in a Fatip Testina Gentile and got one of the best shaves of my life. Smooth, close, no irritation or cuts. I was amazed. I've tried so many times to get good shaves out of those blades, but now I'm really happy I stuck it out with those blades. Interesting video. For whatever reason, I don't have too many mild razors. I do have the Merkur 23C, but I stopped using it since I've got better made razors, imo. My facial hair is quite coarse, so I have to do at least 3-4 passes and clean-up to get my face smooth, I also don't use blades more than two times or so. Any more than that and the blade keeps leaving stubble behind, and the blade is less comfortable on the skin too.
You are so right about the blades and sticking with gear. It's sometimes takes a while to find the right combination of razor and bled that works best for you. Thanks for the excellent comment 😀
Good budget choices for sure. I have a Parker 26C (open comb) which is beautiful and performs great. Just got my Merkur 34C and haven't tried it yet. I really like my 2 Gillette black beauties of different handle length. I have a Parker 55SL-GR coming as well. For real budget, I keep a couple of unopened Concord razors around. Stepping up a lot, I have a Rex Ambassador on it's way...can't wait for it to get here. It's a reward to myself for a couple weeks of getting a couple family houses de-junked, organized and garage sales done. I need a good shave.....
@kevyshaves a great detailed educational breakdown of wet shaving razors for beginners. I always enjoy & learn something from your videos about wet shaving. This was a masterclass & tedtalks on wet shaving.
Hi, Kevy, I just see your video 6 years later. I would like to mention as my favorite razor the Razorock German 37 Slant. Thank you for all your kindness.
I keep saying I'm going to get a Merkur 34C but my old Gillette still gets the job done. Still want the Merkur though. A good shave with a mild razor, witch hazel, and old spice really makes my day.
EJDE89 was my first choice because of how much praise it got. I have had it for 6 years and still going strong. Went through two weeks of facial hair "like a hot knife through butter". Can't recommend Edwin Jagger enough, great razors and fantastic customer service.
Great list Kevy! I started with these 5 DE razors and I love each of them for different reasons. Merkur 34C, Muhle R89 Twist, Muhle R41, Rockwell 6S, Rex Ambassador. For someone starting out, I would recommend the Rockwell 6C first or either the Merkur 34C or Muhle R89. The Rockwell 6C could be the first and last DE razor a person will ever need. Start with plate one and progress to 6 if you like. It is like having 6 razors various aggressiveness. In case a person can’t be bothered with the variety of plates and changing them, then the Merkur or Muhle are good mild starters too.
I'd argue the Muhle R89 and P&G rebrands are the perfect starter shaver if you can find a deal on them. (Sub $30 USD) Rockwell 6C and Merkur 34C have a Zinc threaded head. Muhle stuff manufactured after 2017 is pure brass threading coated in chrome. WILL last longer if you take care of it. Can't beat stainless steel, but 6S is overpriced relative to some offerings like Razorock offering quality products for under half the cost. Gamechanger models are polished SS, only cost $55, and they offer two different plate options depending on what you need. .68 to start out with and buy the .84 for $30 after you get used to it. I just got an ART OF SHAVING (P&G/MUHLE REBRAND) razor (R89 head) for $16 bucks.. you cannot beat that price for starting out. Even comes with Gillette plat 5 pack.. PS: Avoid Edwin Jager DE89. Zinc threaded head.. IT will work, but not a very good long term option. Stainless steel>BRASS>BRASS threading/ZINC(muhle)>ZINC Rockwell 6S is fair if you can get it for around $80.. Current pricing is dumb. ($120 MSRP..lol)
Kevy, thanks for the info. Before I saw this I bought the Viking Blades Captain (butterfly) from Australia and the Viking Blades Badger brush on Amazon. I'm new to DE wet shaving and this is the best shave I've had. I didn't like the beginner blades that came with it. First time using it I only got two slight nicks. I switched to Astra Premium blades and Wow! What a difference. No more nicks or burns. So, this what I learned on. By the fourth shave I have it down pretty good now. I enjoy shaving now. Though it takes me thirty minutes now. I clean my shaver with alcohol after each use and dry off. I started with Taylors of Old Broad Street Sandlewood shave cream. Great stuff! Tried Proraso Red, Creamo, etc. Yes. As you mentioned. I went down that Rabbit Hole. I love all this shaving stuff now. It's become a new hobby for me now. After watching a lot of your videos and recommendations I've purchased many shavers and creams now in the last month and have not been disappointed by anything yet. Except for the Shark razor blades that came with my Parker 66R (nice shaver though) First bad razor burn in about eighteen shaves with no problems. Love my Astra blades. My second Shaver was the Merkur HD 34C. Great Shaver. Next, Edwin Jagger Kelvin knurled short handle. My favorite. Great craftsmanship. And ten others. I could go on and on about this, so I'll end here. Just wanted to thank you for all your info and time spent making these video's. Most appreciated. I guess your my Mentor so to speak since you're the one who got me interested to begin this journey. Thanks. I'm also mostly Scottish according to my ancestry. But have always lived in the USA.
What a great comment! Thans for taking the time to share that here. It's always good to hear from new DE wet shavers like yourself. It's a very enjoyable way to spend some time getting some great relaxing shaves. I don't think there's many of us that haven't fallen down that rabbit hole just yet! Lol! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch, enjoy and comment on my video. It's a fabulous community and there are some great people making and sharing videos on all the social media platforms. Yes, it certainly is a great time to be a traditional Wet shaver with so much good stuff out there from artisans. You have some great gear and that's the best thing about this hobby, trying out new things to see if they work well for you. Great to hear you have some Scottish blood running through your veins! All the best. Kevy 😀
A great featurette for the novice shaver, or cartridge shaver to view in order to make an informed choice of a proper razor. Most beginners will buy razors based on visual advertisement. They usually have no reference as to a particular razor's aggressiveness, or performance. Videos like this saves one from purchasing the wrong tool for their skill level. I've been shaving too long, but as much as my experience dictates much knowledge, I was floored by the offering from Parker. I am off now to order my own 76R. Thanks Kevy!
I have the Wilkinson. It came along with 5 blades, too. Total package cost me 4 euros which is dirt cheap and great for your first razor (if you decide to go back to your old plastic razors), been using it for a few weeks already and love shaving with it. It gives me 5 times better shave than those plastic "razors" such as Machs and others. It makes shaving more fun, too.
Yes, the Wilkinson sword classic is a great razor to have in your den if you're just starting out or are an experienced wet shaver. Great value for money too. Great to hear that you're enjoying shaving a lot more than you used too! Cheers. Kevy 😀
The wilkinson is a great beginner razor. I use mine when I travel because: if I loose it , I don’t care! It was very inexpensive. Nice vid. Keep em coming.I started with a 1932 DE from Gillette that I found in the attic of a house I lived in years ago. I now use either my 1958 Gillette super speed or my parker 87R with Derby or Shaverboy blades( look em up ). Williams mug soap and a wide array of brushes.
@@kevyshaves4109 www.englishshavingshop.com/ They have a RUclips video or two as well. That's how I heard about them but I haven't ordered anything. They're out of South Africa.
Just started shaving with a safety razor. Bought a Merkur 42c, understand it qualifies as a mild razor. Like it very much. I would at a later point like to try a more aggressive open comb one.
Kevy, was surprised by the fast replay to my comment. Thanks for taking the time. I wasn't expecting it. I'll bet you're quite busy trying to keep up with all of your subscribers and making video's and editing. Much appreciated. I'm ordering the Parker 87R Butterfly open DE safety razor and the Equinox Professional Straight Edge Razor (shavette actually) with 100 Derby Blades included tomorrow from Amazon. Just curious how this will be I suppose. I'm no surgeon but I could always gift it to one if I end up looking like my head went through a windshield. Just adding it to my collection. It's cheap enough. Changed my blade (Shark) back to my Astra Premium and had not one nick or burn today. Same shave cream and technique, so I can fairly say my problem was the Shark blade. I believe I'll buy one more Edwin Jagger and call it quits for the time being. I'm pretty sure I have my combination of products down to what I consider good for me. I'll still keep an open mind and try different creams and soaps and things. But I believe I have enough shavers to last me more years than I may have left in me. I'll enjoy them while I can. At 70 years young, someone is going to end up with some nice shavers one day. Hope they don't end up in a garage sale. I'll keep watching your video's and learning. Take care and have fun doing what you enjoy. Write to me anytime if you want. Rich. sky3353@gmail.com
Hey Rich. It is getting more difficult to respond to all the comments but I like to reply to as many as I can as you guys have taken the time to watch and leave comments. Parker make great razors and the 87R will be a fine addition to your den. Good to hear the Astra's gave you a comfortable shave. It takes a while to find out which blades work well for you. Keep trying as many different blades as you can would be my advice. It's also good to buy samples of creams and soaps to find out which ones you like. Makes it easier than having to buy a whole tub and then find out you don't like it. Keep enjoying your shaves. All the best. Kevy :)
I have both the EJ DE89 (my favourite on this list) and the Merkur 34C. Don’t like the Wilkinson and the Gillette. But I quite fancy the Parker 76. Love these videos. And kudos for the effort behind making them.
Great video Kevy,I agree with your choices Kevy, and although I have a collection 18 razors my favourite day to day razors are the Edwin Jagger DE89 and the Merkur 34c fantastic day to day shavers. All the best Mark.
Nice vid Kevy. My favorite five in no order - Gillette Super Speed Red Tip GEM Micromatic Open Comb Gillette New Long Comb Razorock Old Type Open Comb Above the Tie Single Egde (5 shaves so far and loving it) Keep up the good work on the videos. Appreciate the time you take putting them together.
Thanks Matthew. Your list has some great razors there. I've not seen many videos yet with the new ATT single edge. I've never tried a single edge razor yet...oh well, another to add to the list! Lol! 😧
Nice Kevy, My first was the One classic, I then moved on to the Parker 99R - I think the 34C will be my next one, that and the Wilkinson Sword Classic, or the 76R, or the 37C, or the 38 Hd Classic "Barber Pole", or the Futur, or the DE89 or the Fatip Grande........ So many razors not enough money. Keep it up Kevy, always a pleasure to watch, always informative,
Ha ha! You're right, there are so many choices when it comes to razors, you could end up spending a lot of money, especially if you want all the vintage ones. Great wish list you have there. 😀
Hi Kevy! ,Ich denke jeder Rasierhobel hat seine Vorteile. Ich persönlich habe den Mühle R89 und Merkur C25. Mit einer guten Rasiercreme von Taylor of Old Bond oder Goodfelas of Smile bekommt man eine perfekte Rassur.
Thanks for this video. It's too bad adjustable razors like the Merkur 'Progress' (in two handle lengths), the adjustable Parker 'Variant' and the upcoming Rockwell '6C' (available in March 2017) aren't recommended more to new wet-shavers. Those seem like a much better investment since they vary in aggression from very mild to moderately aggressive. If starting out with an adjustable, it would have helped prevent me from buying a variety of mild and medium aggressive razors that I now rarely use. The adjustable Merkur 'Futur' might be a little too aggressive (even at '1') for a beginning wet-shaver. Who knows how well the upcoming adjustable Rockwell 'Model T' will perform, but it probably will be too much of an investment for a new wet-shaver.
borbetomagus I didn't include any adjustable razors in this selection but you are correct, they are very good for new wet shavers. I would recommend the Merkur Progress as a good starter adjustable for beginners. Setting 1 is mild enough until you feel confident enough to move it on. The Futur is another great adjustable but I wouldn't say it was for beginners. I wouldn't want new shavers to be put off by using such an aggressive razor, even on setting 1. Great comment. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Great video Kevy! Well put together, my first de razor was the Merkur 23c and a Gillette super speed flairtip '55 . I agree everyone should have a 34c or a DE89 .....Then just keep collecting and never stop ; ) ....Regards Robert
Hey Kevy, I still have and shave with the '55 Flairtip The Merkur 23c , I gifted to me brother in law, too introduce him to wet shaving. He loves it , he will never go back to cartridge razors! He has his heart set on getting the DE89L , after I took mine on a trip to Toronto , for him to try out. Cheers Robert
Good one Kevy The Merkur 34c was my first foray into DE land and it's a beaut. Sourced a Gillette Tech a wee while back and we're getting on great, with a Feather in it's cap. I was lucky to pick up a 1951 Gillette Superspeed W1 and a Gillette Travel Tech. Still to try the latter, but the Superspeed is excellent; mild but smooth with the right blade. The acquisition order's out of hand now...my thoughts are inching towards an early 20th century Gillette Ever Ready... Keep up the good work Stephen
Nice video Kevy, 5 very nice choices 😌👏 For new DE shavers, there are so many things to consider Size and Weight (I like short handled razors, the weight concerns me less) Style of razor, TTO, 2 or 3 piece. (I think the 1st 2 are marginally safer to assemble) Design (an easy to use head is really important, even then clearly still a learning curve) Price (it's hard to beat the Parkers for price) Build quality (I like things that are well engineered) Aesthetics (that de89 is sooooo shiny) Fun (some people seem to enjoy fiddling with their TTOs, no names Kevy 😏) ...
You're right Dave, there are so many variables and so much to,choose from. I just tried to give anyone starting out some choices in the best razor to get them going and won't put them off by being too aggressive. I like playing with my TTO. Lol! 😂😜
+Kevy Shaves, your choices were spot on Kevy, and I like that you also chose to only show razors that were all easy to get hold of 😌👏 Ha ha, I think everyone enjoys their first TTO, I have a well twiddled flare tip 😂
Great video Kevy. The bigger model of the Merkur 34c is the 38C. I really like it except the barber pole knurling is quite slippery unless you can keep your hand dry of course. I just wrapped it in grip tape. haha I really think the Wilkinson Sword Classic is the least scariest and perhaps the best transition razor from someone coming over to the right way of shaving:) I have 5 Gillette Tech's which also really good. Great advice Kevy!.
Cheers Alan. The Wilknson sword is a brilliant starter razor. Nice and cheap and a good shaver too. I've never thought about using tape as a grip, but if it works for you, great. Techs are brilliant razors too.😀
I found your video by accident and enjoyed it. I have a three piece and did not know about the other kinds, but now remember my dad's butterfly type from seeing it in your video. I think I'll get one of those. One piece and not bits to drop while changing the blade sounds better.
Frank Ladd Thank you Frank, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Butterfly razors are just great. Like you say, open the doors, put the blade in, close the doors and off you go, no problem. Cheers. Kevy 😀
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm guessing that these are not the first 5 acquisitions on your shave journey, but the best 5 out of your lot that you recommend.
Many thanks for the most informative video review. I've only been shaving with a DE (or safety) razor for a couple of years and having had a nasty experience with a rather more aggressive razor than my usual one that I bought on a recommendation, I was looking for another mild razor for travel etc., so I will try some of the ones you suggest. Refreshingly nice and useful to have a fellow native chap from the British isles posting the video as there are myriads of Americans posing them who usually recommend razors and products I can't get over here, except at great expense.
Thanks for the kind words. There resume really good mild shaving razors out there at the moment. Any of the % I've shown here will be great for you, I'm sure. Let me know which razor you decide to buy, even if it isn't one I mentioned here. Cheers. Kevy :)
Kevy Shaves, thank you for your interest. I bought the Parker 76 R on the recommendation of your video as I like a weighty razor with a longer handle and so far it's giving me the best shave I've ever had. A marked improvement from the very expensive Jermyn St DE razor that I have been using for years, even though I used the same Wilkinson Sword razor blades. The butterfly mechanism is easier too, though this is a small consideration. Thanks Kevy, you've done me a favour. More pictures of your delightful puppy please!
Cotterill Sorry, I'm just replying to this now. Good to hear you're enjoying your shaves and getting good ones too with the Parker. A very good razor. Riley will ,ale another appearance soon, I promise. Cheers. Kevy 😊
I didn't realize the Edwin Jagers were made in the UK, and actually made of brass... brass is a lot more sturdy and heavy than zink alloy! I shoulda went with that for my razor back when I bought my first. I ended up buying a parker cuz they had one at a local shop.
Crixus The Gaul Edwin Jagger razors are made in Sheffield in England. They're great razors in my opinion. Although, Parker razors are also very good. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Crixus The Gaul Parker razors have come on a lot in the past few years and most of the quality control things that troubled them in the past are no longer an issue. I have a couple of Parker razors and I really like them. Still prefer my Edwin Jagger though! Lol! Kevy 👍
the 99r worked just fine and looked great but I didn't really like the shave. I gave it to my brother to get him into the hobby. Right now I have a few ikon heads, and 2 merkurs. I found a merkur 25c on ebay NIB(open box) whatever that meant shipped for 20 bucks. I have no idea why but this razor is amazing. Merkurs are designed so well, if only they used brass for theirs.
the Gillette tech was my first razor about 42 year ago, which i still have, gives a fantastic shave. i always recommend the Wilkinson sword as a starter razor, with Palmolive shave stick and Wilkinson sword brush and a pack o 10 Wilkinson sword blades, this shows the newcomer just how inexpensive DE shaving can be. i love the Parker range of razors
the Wilkinson sword blades are a level of sharpness up though, probably best used after a few months learning for a beginner. derby are the best starters.
*Awww man, what are you DOIN' Kevy. Everyone knows the Muhle R41, is the BEST DE razor to start off with. o______O* *Seriously though the Merkur 34c is truly a wonderful razor, it's by far my favorite. I wish Merkur would release an updated version, with a deep knurling grip.*
Kevy, thanks for a great video. I got started with DE shaving last year and went with the EJ DE89; so I'm glad it popped up on your list. Lovely razor to start my wet shaving career off :) My question is, now I really have the bug, what do I buy next - razor wise? Your suggestions are most appreciated. PS... I haven't seen someone so happy to shave a tash off (your recent vid) since I finished Movember! Keep up the great work. Mark.
Hi Mark. I think the next step would be an adjustable razor. I would recommend with the Merkur Progress or the Parker Variant. Both great razors and the good thing about them is that you can play around with the settings as you gain more experience. Cheers.Kevy :)
Great video. Just purchased the Edwin Jagger. Can't wait to start using/experimenting with DE razors. BTW, I noticed you used both hands to shave. I can't do that.
i wanted to get the 34C. because of all the fuss i keep hearing everyone seems to like that one..but i thought perhaps it's a bit to close to the 38C barberPole..so i was thinking of the Merkur 25C i think that's an openComb but being a relative newbie (first year of wet shaving) perhaps an openComb is not such a good idea..
+samdeur I've never used a Merkur 25C but I have used other open combs. I've just read some reviews and the some say the 25C isn't too aggressive for an open comb razor so it might be worth having a go with it. I've only been shaving for 8months this way and I find if you take your time with an aggressive razor and just relax and enjoy it, it'll be just fine. Maybe try a milder blade in it to start off. But the 34C is a great razor too. Have you thought about trying a slant like a Merkur 37C?
No to be honest i don't much understand slant razors ;-) and by not understand i really mean everything about slants. why and what's the difference between all three types.? will have to look in to that one ;-)
+samdeur Slant razors give me a great shave. The way the angle of the blade sits in the razor means rather than cutting the hair in a straight across way it cuts the hair at an angle. There's lots of videos on here that explain it but I really enjoy using my Merkur 37C slant. 😀
I currently have the Assured butterfly from Dollar Tree ($1) and@and, the Merkur 25c and the Merkur 39c. Yes I'm aware that the Merkurs aren't usually recommended for new shavers but some reviewers are more efficient than@than aggressive. Thoughts? T
I think its good to try out as many different razors as you can when you start this way of shaving. Some will work for you, others might not. That part of the fun. Cheers. Kevy 😀
Nothing wrong with the Dollar Tree razors with good blades in them. They just won't give the more precise shave nor last as long as better built razors...but at $1 to replace, who cares. You can do a complete wet shave with products from DT...but I'd use better blades.
As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I Did, I've used Merkur and Voskhad blades so far. The 25C proved defective, but the Sledgehammer thus far is my favorite with the Assured a remarkably close second.
I chose to grab my self the Parker from Amazon.ca. Great thing was, it came with blades I didn't even think about buying separate blades. See how programmed I am with the other "guys". Tried my first shave using the Gillette Platinum it came with. 2 passes with the grain. It was a breeze and Wow! how easy it felt with no tugging. Now I'm just wondering how to store it and dispose of the blades. I have 2 kids under 5 that like to grab shiny new things. I have come up with an idea to hide it, but it's starting to feel like a scary hazard. Thank you for the videos, it was a great help in choosing my first straight razor. Cheers from Canada!
Good to hear you're enjoying using the Parker Raj. Gillette Platinum are a blade I don't think I've tried but I've heard they are great. I use a money box to dispose of my blades. It's all sealed except for the slot. This is the one I use - ebay.to/2ulSMuz Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Cheers. Kevy :)
I use Derby extra blades and the back of the box has a slot to dispose of your used blades. You can purchase Derby blades online, inexpensive, usually $10 to $15 for 100 blades.
I would say the Edwin Jagger is the better razor. But I like the Parker for the butterfly style type of razor it is. And for those wanting to try that type of razor, it's a very good place to start. Great for a beginner as it's not too aggressive and it's very easy to load the blade too. That's why I included it in this video. Cheers. Kevy 👍
OMG. I have this Gillette from my dad and even he didn't know what model is it. Hope I can find one as a back up. And I use it without base. Blade straight to the face
I wouldn't have given Parker the time of day before. However, I respect your opinion, and I like a TTO razor. I don't need it want a mild razor, so, do they have a mid aggressive razor that you would recommend?
Whats with the parker variant....did i break it...cause on one its like shaving with a samurai sword...if i go slow enough it shaves great....any inattention and ur asking for it...
Thank you for the video, quick question for ya if you were to pick one to shave daily in the shower without a mirror which of the five would it be or is there another you would choose? also wondering what your blade choice would be for such a daily task. Thanks in advance : ) Tyler
Tyler Murphy Good question Tyler. If I were shaving in the shower every day, I would use the Edwin Jagger DE89 with a Polsilver Super Iridium blade. The DE89 is a good razor that's not too aggressive and would allow my skin to handle shaving on a daily basis. The Polsilver blade is very smooth. Hope that answers your question. What would your choice be? Cheers. Kevy 👍
***** Merkur 34C with a Wilkinson Sword blade. Don't have any of the others in your video to compare her to though but she shave the smoothest out of what I have, Merkur futur a RIMEI some other inexpensive Chinese razors. I personally prefer a more aggressive razor / shave. Reason I was asking is I'm not sure what razor to get for my Dad, he shaves in the shower on a regular basis, with a cartridge razor. I plan to give those blade you mentioned a try one of these days, are they your favorites or just the blades that you have found to be the smoothest shaving out of what you've tried?. Thank you for the reply / answers. Have a Great day : ) Tyler
Tyler Murphy Hey Tyler, that's great your getting your dad a de razor. Shaving daily with an aggressive razor would mess my skin up. The DE89 isn't too aggressive for that. The Polsilver blades are the smoothest out of most of the blades I've tried. But also try Perma Sharps, Gillette Silver Blues, Voskhod blades and Astra SP's (Astra Greens), they are all good quality blades that feel smooth for me too. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Hi Kevy. Great review of all 5 razors. Was wondering, I have the Parker 26c and it really is a very good well made razor. However there is a little more blade exposure on one side than the other. Was wondering how the blade lines up on the 76c. Thank you.
Hi Brian. The blade alignment on the 76R is spot on. No issues with that at all. I've heard in the past that some Parker razors have blade alignment issues so maybe they've took that on board and have started tightening up on the quality control. The 76R, I think, is quite a new razor in the Parker line. Thanks for the comments. Cheers...Kevy 👍
Kevy you label these razors as Beginners. Can you give me some brands that would be considered intermediate or advanced? Im just starting out with wet shavings and learning the terminology. I have a Merkur 34C, a three piece D.H. Harris, Rockwell 6c and Jet Black Supply single blade injector. Thanks.
Good question Steve. I would suggest the Parker Variant adjustable razor, the Merkur Progress, or the Parker 65r. All great razors at affordable prices. Cheers. Kevy 👍
I haven't tried it Joshua. I have Italian Barber Milionario. That's a very cheap soap too and the scent is beautiful. Need to get me some Amici. Thanks for the comment 😀
I have a Feather ASD2, an Edwin Jagger DE89lbl, a Wilkinson Sword Classic and a Merkur 34HD. I also own a Feather Artist Club folding shavette. So far my go to razor is the Merkur but I am now thinking of getting something a little more aggressive. Any thoughts?
Thanks for sharing Gary. My choice for something more aggressive with options is the Merkur Progress. Fantastic adjustable razor. Let us know what you go for. Cheers, Kevy 😀
My first and only razor is the Merkur 38c heavy duty barber pole. I got it from a small classic barber shop. I felt the weight of other razors but this one was the longest and heaviest it shaves great perhaps il try the 34c or something with an open comb. Only one problem I have with it is how fragile it is I dropped it and nicked the top plate. Can't find a good replacement without braking the bank ah well it still shaves so still ok perhaps il drop buy the store and see if they can help me out. Perhaps you could do a open vs closed razor and can a relative beginner use an open comb? Perhaps something like the Merkur 25C
Hello! I too have the Merkur 38c,and it was also my first and for a quite a while, my only DE razor ;-) Have a few others now, including the 47c(just to have the 3 piece version)and they are my favs...by far! :-)
It's great when you find a razor that feels comfortable to shave with. Like you! I like a heavy razor. I have the Merkur Progress adjustable with the long handle and that razor has a lovely weight to it. Good idea for a closed comb and an open comb comparison.
Tudor Renegade It is a cheap razor but very good. Ive never used an R89 but people say it's similar to the Merkur 34C or the Edwin Jagger DE89. The R41 is a very aggressive razor. I like to use it but only very occasionally. Cheers. Kevy 😀
Spooney J The Gillette Tech is a very mild razor and is very very light in weight. I prefer the Wilkinson Sword classic as it's still a mild shaving razor but it has a little more weight to it. The Gillette Tech is milder than the Wilkinson Sword Classic in my opinion. Cheers. Kevy 👍
flash boredom Cheers. The Parker 24C is the razor you want. Open comb and not too aggressive. Great shaver, nice weight and great knurling on the handle. Either that or the PAA double open comb. Cheers. Kevy.
flash boredom I love my Merkur 1904 very much. Very mild. The Parker 87 r is also a great one. This all depends on blade choice , skin&beard type ect....
Dave Henley Yes. Kinda like using a bowl to create a lather but with the added bonus of having warm lather, which for me, in Scotland, especially in the colder months, is lovely. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Dave Henley Any Taylor Of Old Bond Street creams will give you a great lather and they also have some brilliant scents. Also one that doesn't get much of a mention and is very good and cheap is Supermax cream in a tube. You can find it on eBay, I think it's great. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Dave Henley That's a tough one Dave! Yes, Merkur make great razors but so do many others! If I could only have 3 modern razors, I would have a Merkur 34C, an Edwin Jagger DE89, and either a Parker Variant or a Merkur Progress. All great razors and they will all give you excellent shaves for years to come. The Variant and Progress are adjustable razors which are great for letting you adjust the setting so you can have it as mild or aggressive as you want it to be. Depends on how much you want to spend too. Also, blade choice makes a big difference to how a razor feels on your face. Cheers. Kevy 👍
That's an impossible question to answer Dave! Everyone will find so,etching different in a blade. It all depends on your beard growth, skin type, what razor you put the blade in etc., etc. Some people will say that Feathers are the best blades while other people will say another brand are much better than Feathers! I think more than anything else in Wet Shaving, blades are the most subjective thing in any shave. My advice is to always try as many different blades as you can until you find one that's right for you. You'll know straight away when you find one that works for you. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Used the Wilkinson Classic plastic version for many years before I got interested in upgrading my shaving tools. I still think it's a very good and mild razor.
Greetings and thanks...🎄.
Enjoy your videos, Kevy. And you seem like a genuinely good person. Keep up the wet shaving videos
KingofWisdom thank you for this comment :) I too have very coarse beard hair
And now what razors do you use?
I also have coarse hair, too.
Thank you in advance.
Cheers Jason. I'm glad you found it helpful. Cheers. Kevy 🙂👍
34c today tomorrow and as long as I will shave, its well made balanced and highly maneuverable. In a nutshell it works for me.
That's all that matters. 👍
Muhle R41 for me.
I'd argue the Muhle R89 and P&G rebrands are the perfect starter shaver if you can find a deal on them. (Sub $30 USD)
Rockwell 6C and Merkur 34C have a Zinc threaded head.
Stainless steel>BRASS>BRASS threading/ZINC(muhle)>ZINC
Rockwell 6S is fair if you can get it for around $80..
Cheers Alex. Lots of choices out there. Take it easy on the spending buddy! Lol! 👍😀
Cheers. Kevy 😀
+Kevy Shaves i purchased wilkonson in 3 euros. Let's see the quality tomorrow:)
It is a great inexpensive razor for travel Jean. And it shaves great too. Some nice sounding razors you have. Cheers. Kevy :)
Good video Kevy, enjoyed that, very first for me was the use of my Dad's Gillette Slim Twist, then my own Wilkinson Sword Classic.
Cheers for that Paul. Slim twist I've used once and the doors opened a wee bit one pass...ouch! Good razors though. All the best for tomorrow 😀
PaulHFilms DE89 a world class razor as is the 34c.....I’ve got a Parker 94R it’s a special razor as well.
@@kevyshaves4109 have you ever heard anything about products by "the old'e english shaving shop"?
I haven't. Do,they have a website? Kevy 😀
@@kevyshaves4109
www.englishshavingshop.com/
They have a RUclips video or two as well. That's how I heard about them but I haven't ordered anything. They're out of South Africa.
Just started shaving with a safety razor.
Bought a Merkur 42c, understand it qualifies as a mild razor. Like it very much. I would at a later point like to try a more aggressive open comb one.
Great video with superb clarity, especially on the Merkur. All the best, Garry.
Cheers Garry. I like to get in close so the viewers can see what the razors
are all about! :) Kevy
For me, the best is the Merkur 34c and Edwin Jagger DE89
Can't go wrong with those two Jean. Cheers...Kevy 👍
Parker gets my vote ! Merkur is a close second !
Great video Kevy,I agree with your choices Kevy, and although I have a collection 18 razors my favourite day to day razors are the Edwin Jagger DE89 and the Merkur 34c fantastic day to day shavers. All the best Mark.
Cheers Mark. Good choices. Can't go wrong with those two razors. Always get good shaves if I use them, very comfortable..Kevy 😀
Nice vid Kevy. My favorite five in no order -
Gillette Super Speed Red Tip
GEM Micromatic Open Comb
Gillette New Long Comb
Razorock Old Type Open Comb
Above the Tie Single Egde (5 shaves so far and loving it)
Keep up the good work on the videos. Appreciate the time you take putting them together.
Thanks Matthew. Your list has some great razors there. I've not seen many videos yet with the new ATT single edge. I've never tried a single edge razor yet...oh well, another to add to the list! Lol! 😧
Grrrrrrrreat Kevy, thanx for sharing. The WC was my first DE razor. I still used with 2 shims.
Cheers Thomas. 2 shims? Lol! 😂
Great choices , the Gillete Tech looks amazing
Hi Kevy!
,Ich denke jeder Rasierhobel hat seine Vorteile.
Cheers. Kevy 👍
Video Spot on Kevy, I found Boots in Warrington selling the Wilkinson Classic for £4.60ish with 5 Wilkinson blades, excellent value for money.
Cheers John. I've never seen it for sale in any Boots shop I've been in. I got mine on eBay. 👍
10 wilkinson blade is 1euro😁😁😁
Great video Kevy! Well put together, my first de razor was the Merkur 23c and a Gillette super speed flairtip '55 . I agree everyone should have a 34c or a DE89 .....Then just keep collecting and never stop ; ) ....Regards Robert
Cheers Robert. Do you still use the ones you started out with? I agree with you, the 34C & DE89 should be in everyone's den 👍
Thanks for sharing Robert. It's great you still use the '55 Flairtip. Cheers..Kevy
Good one Kevy
The Merkur 34c was my first foray into DE land and it's a beaut.
Keep up the good work
Stephen
Some great razors you have there Stephen. Thanks for sharing...Kevy :)
Nice video Kevy, 5 very nice choices 😌👏
For new DE shavers, there are so many things to consider
Size and Weight (I like short handled razors, the weight concerns me less)
Style of razor, TTO, 2 or 3 piece. (I think the 1st 2 are marginally safer to assemble)
Design (an easy to use head is really important, even then clearly still a learning curve)
Price (it's hard to beat the Parkers for price)
Build quality (I like things that are well engineered)
Aesthetics (that de89 is sooooo shiny)
Fun (some people seem to enjoy fiddling with their TTOs, no names Kevy 😏)
...
You're right Dave, there are so many variables and so much to,choose from. I just tried to give anyone starting out some choices in the best razor to get them going and won't put them off by being too aggressive. I like playing with my TTO. Lol! 😂😜
+Kevy Shaves, your choices were spot on Kevy, and I like that you also chose to only show razors that were all easy to get hold of 😌👏
Ha ha, I think everyone enjoys their first TTO, I have a well twiddled flare tip 😂
+Dave C ha ha, that made me laugh! Nice one Dave 👏👏
Techs are brilliant razors too.😀
I'm in the market for 2 more budget safety razors and I'll check out the Parker 76R,Gillette Tec and the Wilkinson Sword Classic. Thanks!
No, they're not the first 5 I had. I just wanted to show a different selection of razos that are all at different price points etc. Cheers. Kevy 👍😀
Wilkinson in Plastic, I love it. For all purposes, like a 4Wdrive...everywhere
Cheers. Kevy 😊
I Think think the Parker 77r Is base on the old "Black Beauty" ???
Great Selection Kevy and well Presented as per Usual !!
You could be right about that Chris. They do look kinda similar. Cheers. Kevy 👍
My top 5 razors in no order:
Packer 96R
Merkur 34C
Dorco Safety Razor
Gillette Rocket Made in England
Merkur Futur
Good list Steven. I've never seen the Dorco safety razor, I'll need to check it out 😀
***** I got it of Amazon for only 5 or 6 pounds. Great razor for very little money and its better than some of my razors that cost me 30 to 50 pounds.
Hi kevyshaves good selection of razors mate good video as usual
Cheers Peter. Thanks for watching and all the comments. Kevy 😀
Cheers. Kevy 👍
Yeah but Parkers are made in India!
Crixus The Gaul Yes Merkur make some fantastic razors.
the Gillette tech was my first razor about 42 year ago, which i still have, gives a fantastic shave.
i always recommend the Wilkinson sword as a starter razor, with Palmolive shave stick and Wilkinson sword brush and a pack o 10 Wilkinson sword blades, this shows the newcomer just how inexpensive DE shaving can be.
i love the Parker range of razors
the Wilkinson sword blades are a level of sharpness up though, probably best used after a few months learning for a beginner. derby are the best starters.
where i live Wilkinson sword are easiest to obtain from the shelf
+John James I couldn't find it in any stores. Had to get it on eBay. Great razor. 👍
I like hearing stories like yours John. 42 years and you still shave with it, that is fantastic. Cheers for sharing.
*Awww man, what are you DOIN' Kevy. Everyone knows the Muhle R41, is the BEST DE razor to start off with. o______O*
*Seriously though the Merkur 34c is truly a wonderful razor, it's by far my favorite. I wish Merkur would release an updated version, with a deep knurling grip.*
Ha ha! The Muhle R41 is a good razor...maybe not for beginners though. 😀
Kevy, thanks for a great video. I got started with DE shaving last year and went with the EJ DE89; so I'm glad it popped up on your list. Lovely razor to start my wet shaving career off :)
My question is, now I really have the bug, what do I buy next - razor wise? Your suggestions are most appreciated.
PS... I haven't seen someone so happy to shave a tash off (your recent vid) since I finished Movember!
Keep up the great work. Mark.
Hi Mark. I think the next step would be an adjustable razor. I would recommend with the Merkur Progress or the Parker Variant. Both great razors and the good thing about them is that you can play around with the settings as you gain more experience. Cheers.Kevy :)
Thanks Kevy, I'll have a look. thanks for the advice.
Ok Mark. Let me know if you decide on anything. All the best. Kevy :)
Great video. Just purchased the Edwin Jagger. Can't wait to start using/experimenting with DE razors. BTW, I noticed you used both hands to shave. I can't do that.
Thanks. Edwin Kagger make great razors. I'm sure you'll enjoy using it. Yes, I'm comfortable shaving with either hand. Cheers. Kevy 👍
My first safety razor used it for a whole year and then upgraded but still keep it just in case.
i have wilkinson plastic, gilette english rocket, gilette slim adjustable gillete black beauty, yuma, q-shave adjustable, gillette english flare tip..
Merkur 15C is the best!
I was just thinking of getting a second razor hahahah the universe at work ;-)
Ha ha! Indeed, what are you thinking of getting as your second razor?
i wanted to get the 34C. because of all the fuss i keep hearing everyone seems to like that one..but i thought perhaps it's a bit to close to the 38C barberPole..so i was thinking of the Merkur 25C i think that's an openComb but being a relative newbie (first year of wet shaving) perhaps an openComb is not such a good idea..
38c
Good choice :)
I thought maybe the Rockwell 6C would make this list.
I'm not sure the 6C was available when this was made. I think the 6S had only just become available at this time
I prefer the pre-war Tech with triangular slots and fat handle...
I don't think I've seen one of those. Ok, time to do some online searching! Thanks for the comment 👍
I might look into 34 C HD Later on ! I enjoy the videos you make.
Go for it!
Nicely done! Cheers much for sharing!
Thanks for watching and for the comment 👍
Hi Kevy, how does the Parker compare to the EJ? I have 5 razors, some quite expensive but to me the EJ is still the standard.
Blade straight to the face? 😲 You should be able to find a Gillette Tech on ebay no problem. Kevy 👍
Kevy Shaves yeah like a shavette but with a different hadle 😂. Good to know about the Gillette thank you
I wouldn't have given Parker the time of day before. However, I respect your opinion, and I like a TTO razor.
I don't need it want a mild razor, so, do they have a mid aggressive razor that you would recommend?
Parker 94R is a great mid aggressive razor. Kevy :)
@@kevyshaves4109 thank you sir!
Whats with the parker variant....did i break it...cause on one its like shaving with a samurai sword...if i go slow enough it shaves great....any inattention and ur asking for it...
Have you got the line on the top cap lined up on the same side as the triangle? That can sometimes throw the alignement out. Kevy 🙂
@@kevyshaves4109 screwed that up once...hope i didnt damage it...had it the right way since...
Cheers. Kevy 👍
Why would I have razors in my den? I keep mine in a bathroom cabinet.
I'm here Slovak republic my friend
Hello. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. Kevy 👍
You're welcome
I have a razor that is kind of a knockoff of the 26c. It is also made in India, and has the same alignment issue. It still works well though.
Be nice you do a shave 🪒 with the five you show off. That would be cool.
Cheers. Kevy 👍
Hey Kevy, have you ever used Italian Barber's Amici soap at all? it's really cheap on there and I was wondering what the quality was like. Cheers.
I haven't tried it Joshua. I have Italian Barber Milionario. That's a very cheap soap too and the scent is beautiful. Need to get me some Amici. Thanks for the comment 😀
My favorite is a 1912 Gillette but I notice you don’t mention vintage at all
I'm not sure I owned many vintage razors when this video was made. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Maybe you were watching a different video but, he does mention vintage ✌🏻
good video kevy I have a bunch of vintage razors now and some newer 1,s also i,m going to get the mercury 34c HD next
Good choice John. The Merkur 34C is a fantastic razor.
+Kevy Shaves Thanks I had thought about an adjustable, I just couldn't
decide between vintage gillette or the progress.
+Gary H either of those would be good. Why not get both?! Hee hee 😜👍
Very impressive collection you have. You may consider Muhle R89 open comb. It's aggressiveness is very good.
no links to where to buy them ? really ? thats BAD....
eBay or Amazon is probably where you'll find most of these razors for sale Janah. Cheers. Kevy 👍
+D. Sparks thanks for sharing that. It's great to have choices with different razors 👍
Great idea about the open comb v close comb choice.
Howdy! Imo, I wouldn't recommend a beginner to start off with an open comb.
I choose the 38c on two counts: looks and weight :-) lol
awesome video! and idea
Cheers! 😀
The Wilkingson is like 3 pounds where I live ! Any thoughts on Muehle r41 and r89 ?
Tudor Renegade It is a cheap razor but very good. Ive never used an R89 but people say it's similar to the Merkur 34C or the Edwin Jagger DE89. The R41 is a very aggressive razor. I like to use it but only very occasionally. Cheers. Kevy 😀
should I get 2 gtx 1080's in sli or a titan x?
2 gtx 1080
how would you compare a gillette tech and a wilkinson sword classic
Spooney J The Gillette Tech is a very mild razor and is very very light in weight. I prefer the Wilkinson Sword classic as it's still a mild shaving razor but it has a little more weight to it. The Gillette Tech is milder than the Wilkinson Sword Classic in my opinion. Cheers. Kevy 👍
It seems to be just the odd Boots shops, don't know why mate. ?
Yeah, you'd think they would all carry the same stock...Cheers John..Kevy
i bought myself a parker 96r butterfly rasor kevy are thry good razors? do they give you a close shave?
Yes Dave. Put a nice sharp blade in that razor and it will give you an excellent shave. Kevy 👍
thx kevy
can you recommend a mild open comb razor? ive got the plastic Wilkinson and merkor 1904 . nice little vid.
flash boredom Cheers. The Parker 24C is the razor you want. Open comb and not too aggressive. Great shaver, nice weight and great knurling on the handle. Either that or the PAA double open comb. Cheers. Kevy.
+Kevy Shaves
thanks for the reply and advice. cheers
flash boredom You're welcome ☺
flash boredom I love my Merkur 1904 very much. Very mild. The Parker 87 r is also a great one. This all depends on blade choice , skin&beard type ect....
kevy are shaving scuttles good to use for a really good lather?
Dave Henley Yes. Kinda like using a bowl to create a lather but with the added bonus of having warm lather, which for me, in Scotland, especially in the colder months, is lovely. Cheers. Kevy 👍
thank you kevy for your help i really appreciate you helping me with my shaves
for beginners or experts it's the same thing: open comb, slant bar or nothing (this is my opinion)
Good choices Franco. Kevy :)
Grazie Kevy!! (io sono italiano e scrivo dall'Italia); Ciao!!
Can you recommend a mild open comb razor.
Parker 24C is a good razor. Even milder is the Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Double Open Comb. Both great razors in my opinion. Cheers. Kevy 😀
Thanx for the vid.
No problem Paul. Cheers. Kevy :)
Hello sir! What do you think of the Parker 91R? Is it a good quality safety razor?
Yes, absolutely
Thank you!
whats the best shaving cream kev for a good lather?
Dave Henley Any Taylor Of Old Bond Street creams will give you a great lather and they also have some brilliant scents. Also one that doesn't get much of a mention and is very good and cheap is Supermax cream in a tube. You can find it on eBay, I think it's great. Cheers. Kevy 👍
thx for that kevy much appreciated
Dave Henley No problem Dave. Happy to try and help 👍
whats the best safety rzzor kevy i have a cobra safety razor i was wondering are merkurs the best ones to have?
Dave Henley That's a tough one Dave! Yes, Merkur make great razors but so do many others! If I could only have 3 modern razors, I would have a Merkur 34C, an Edwin Jagger DE89, and either a Parker Variant or a Merkur Progress. All great razors and they will all give you excellent shaves for years to come. The Variant and Progress are adjustable razors which are great for letting you adjust the setting so you can have it as mild or aggressive as you want it to be. Depends on how much you want to spend too. Also, blade choice makes a big difference to how a razor feels on your face. Cheers. Kevy 👍
Good vedio .
kevy are feather blades better than merkur blades?
That's an impossible question to answer Dave! Everyone will find so,etching different in a blade. It all depends on your beard growth, skin type, what razor you put the blade in etc., etc. Some people will say that Feathers are the best blades while other people will say another brand are much better than Feathers! I think more than anything else in Wet Shaving, blades are the most subjective thing in any shave. My advice is to always try as many different blades as you can until you find one that's right for you. You'll know straight away when you find one that works for you. Cheers. Kevy 👍
thx for that kevy very helpful much appreciated
no problem Dave 😀
Merci pour la video👍💪💪
is that your laundry in your kitchen?
LTV249 Lol! No, it's just some towels for drying dishes. 👍
Kevy Shaves I mean that is a washer to your right?
Oh. Yes. that's how we crazy Brits live! It's less distance to travel if you spill gravy down your shirt! Lol 😅 Cheers. Kevy ☺
wow! it's that a clothes washing machine in your kitchen?!
Lol! Ys, it's how we roll in the UK!!
PARKER IS THE WINNER 🏆
Iftekhar Khan Yeah!!! 👍😂😀
which one is best for shaving head ?
I don't shave my head but the Merkur 34C is the best one for shaving your head Janah. Cheers. Kevy 👍
thx.
Lord l 122 is the copy of Gillette tech.
Сергей Белецкий Thanks for that information. I didn't know that. Cheers. Kevy 👍
