I bought a 6C direct from Rockwell after seeing this, couldn't be happier with it. After a 20 year hiatus from wet shaving this razor made it so easy, having fun trying different settings, blades and creams. Thanks Kevy for your really helpfull vlogs.

You nailed it with the Rockwell 6s. It won't win a beauty contest but it is no question the best shaving DE I've ever used. Smooth and efficient, it delivers perfect shaves without cuts or irritation. The only thing I "don't like" about the 6s is getting a perfect shave every time can actually get boring. Other than that it is a RAD killer.

Loved this video Kevy!! I might add that your top two are my favorite two as well. For what you get in terms of quality, features, and durability make them both not only great razors but great values for the money. It's funny how when I started watching these videos everyone seemed to be starting their RUclips Channels with the Merkur 34C, then over so many new products being produced both affordable as well as premium then the push towards the Gillette Classics and so forth you don't see many showings of the 34C anymore. That's why I like how you said it has a sentimental place for you. I definitely have to get one of those as well as a DE89. Again loved the video Kevy very enjoyable.

Thanks John. I like all the razors I have in my den. The 34C does have a special place n my heart as it was the first razor I bought when I started shaving this way. And you're right, I bought it because back then it seemed to be the razor everyone was using. Cheers. Kevy 😀

Kevy, based on your review of the Rockwell 6S (that I saw for the first time a week or so ago), I went out and purchased one. I can't emphasize enough how right you are about that razor. With just one shave, lt lept to the top of my rotation. Solid and very welcome advice. Thank you.

Great reviews!!! I am new to DE wet shaving as well and despite a few cuts I am getting better each time. My first was the henson mild. Great razor but needed something more aggressive and now I go back and forth with the rockwell 6c which is phenomenal given the price point. Think the merkur 34c will be next to my collection 🤔. Again awesome review and happy shaving everyone 😀

Started using a safety razor about Sep 2023. Bought a Merker 34C the other day as it seems to be the most recommended beginner razor. It's night and day from the Viking Chieftain Odin I have been using. Also, after going through a sample pack of 15 or so different kinds of blades, I'm settling in on the Astra Superior Stainless.

Buy an adjustable razor. That way you're not stuck with something that's too aggressive or not aggressive enough. You find your perfect shave. I bought my Rockwell T2 after figuring this out after pondering which would be the best razor to buy after I bought a cheap razor on Amazon that cut me to bits.

    • @Minime163
      @Minime163 11 месяцев назад

I got a qshave adjustable razor of Amazon on Friday but haven't tried it yet as I'm currently shaving with my gilette ballend 1918 ww1 opencomb vintage razor that arived on Wednesday(ordered of ebay) and I love it it's my favourite of all my razors so far, but the one I'd recommend for beginners which started it all back in April is my dad's old ballend Gillette from the 1950's great shave (wilkionsonsword blades) as gentle a razor as you'll get perfect for when you need a quick shave in a hurry too.

Nice video Kevy! I love these types of videos. Congrats on 2 yrs of traditional wet shaving! My top 5 just about mirrors yours except I haven’t tried the Parker Variant yet, but it’s currently in the mail on its way to me. The Rockwell 6S is my number one. Followed by my EJDE89. My number 3 would be my Gillette Slim Adjustable. Number 4 would be the Merkur 34C. Number 5 is not yet known since I don’t have my 5th razor yet.

Can't believe I never tried DE wet shaving before. Lifetime of plastic disposables. Had my first DE shave with a cheapo Weshi this week and I'm hooked. Wasted so much money of disposables over a lifetime. Going to try some other DE safety razors. Merkur, Viking, Edwin Jagger, Rockwell, Parker. I consider it investing in new tools. See what designs I like. So cool. Great info thank you. Helps me narrow down which ones I want to try first.

I don’t have that many razors. The 2013 Mühle 41 might be the one that does everything I need. My Merkur Futur is extremely efficient for head shaving, but the adjustability comes at a price of tolerance. Use the highest setting without care and you will be bloodied as it skips across your skin like a stone skipping off water. The X3 ikon slant is a very forgiving slant. I like shavettes. The dovo is very easy to use. The Feather AC is also quite forgiving because the blades don’t have sharp edges. My favorite is called an Focus Slim A1. It has edge guards like the dovo. The worst is called a Zertone. I have three noticeable scars on my face from one shave with that thing.

I have never had a problem in the past until the past several years. Now with the disposable double blade "Bic" and even the Gilette Fusions pull like hell even with new blades and a new battery in the fusions. I use good soaps, Barbasol, Edge jell, and Old Spice Mug, with the same pulling out the soft beard and mustache "limber beard".

Hi Kevy, A bit late in responding but wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. I am relatively new to wet shaving mostly thanks to you. I have followed your recommendations regarding razors, blades, etc from a starters perpective, having purchased and currently using the EJ DE89 LBL and having just ordered the Rockwell 6C, ( the 6S being a little too rich for me ).
Tough decision between the it and the Parker Variant! Keep up the good work, Kevy! Looking forward to your next videos.

Thanks for the support mate and I look forward to hearing how you're progressing with your shaves. Cheers. Kevy 👍

Hi Kevy... great video. You and I have similar tastes. My top two razors to date have been #2 Parker Variant #1 Rockwell 6S. Though I just received the new RazoRock Mamba CNC machined SS razor. Have yet to give a thorough testing, but honestly I don't think the Rockwell will ever be dethroned. It gives me BBS shaves without even trying... never a weeper never any irritation. Truly an amazing razor. Cheers

I've used quite a few razors myself and like you I do hold a soft spot for my Merkur 23C (same head as a 37)
    It's what I started with...
I have found the true test of a razor is Head shaving... the hair is so dense around the lower back and sides smoothness and efficiency are a must!
The 2 at the top for me is my Merkur Slant 39C (Sledgehammer) you could go against the grain on the 1st pass with zero tugging... I have a Razorock old German 37 slant as well that is close to performance but lacks the weight of the 39 which I like.
My 2nd fav. is my Razorock SLOC (Self Lubricating Open Comb)
I bought it just for the cap which I heard would tame down my Muhle R41.... what I was surprised to find out is the SLOC is a damn fine razor in its own right! light and nimble more efficient than an R41
    Without the rough ride.

i personally like the Murker style safety razors where you can turn the dial to increase or decrease the travel of the head. You can get a knockoff for real cheap (i paid $20 about 6 years ago) and it's so versitile for even longer hair and on the #1 setting it gives the closest shave i've ever gotten from a razor. That 1 razor because it's adjustable can do the job of 6 at a fixed setting. For me it was a no brainer

Ha ha! I like all of my razors for different reasons. I've only let go 2 razors I've bought, the Merkur Futur and my Muhle R41. I just didn't enjoy using them as I felt they were too aggressive for me. Maybe if I use them in a few months time I will feel different about that as my technique improves. If I don't like a razor, it won't stay in my den. I'd rather someone else enjoyed using it. Cheers. Kevy 👍

I have started wet shaving with a DE just recently with an Edwin Jagger but I don't particularly get on with it. I suspect the problem is the super smooth head with heavy chrome plating as I think this tends to drag on the skin I note that your two favourites have a more rough and less polished surface and I suspect that this is actually deliberate and beneficial. I'm tempted to buy one of your top two. Thanks.

I have the Rockwell 6C. It's half the price of the 6S and some say that it is smoother. I use the 6C every time I shave and I also use the #4 plate. I might try the #3 again. The alignment of the blades is perfect and I don't have to twist or push the blades to get things straight like other razors. I can't remember the Gillette razor that I used in the '70s and don't know what happened to it! I think that it was a twist open and adjustable. It was inherited.

    Well done again, Kevy.
The 6S was my first. I have several others I like too.
Here's the thing I haven't heard mentioned much. The way a razor feels has much to do with the blade used.
Any one of my razors will feel very aggressive and harsh with a blade that doesn't work well in it. Yet, that same blade may feel great in a different razor.
I used a Gillette "silver blue" in an ATT Windsor and it sucked (0.58mm gap, I think).
That same blade in the 6S on a smaller plate gap was perfect.
OTOH, a Personna red (blue package) makes the ATT wonderful.
I'm still sampling blades, and I have a long way to go. But, the blade dynamics for a given razor...and a given skin type...are critical.
And we haven't even gotten to the soap and lather quality changes depending on how one builds any particular soap.
One other thing I like about the 6S, is that I can leave it on a 1 or 2 plate for daily "polishes"...probably forever!
BTW, just received and used the B&M Fougere Gothique...
    Wow!
    Might need a church afterwards...

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  6 лет назад

I agree with you 100%. The blade choice in a razor determines how good or bad the shave will be. I've used different blades i the same razor and got very different results in terms of how comfortable the shave was. I love the 6S. It just does what it's meant to do, and does it very well. That B&M Gothique looks great. cHeers. Kevy :)

This is the video I’ve been looking for! An honest review by a regular guy, not some bow tie wearing barbershop sponsor.
I have been watching video after video in my spare time for about a week, trying to do my research on double edged razors. This video is 4 years old now but it showcases some razors that are still considered the best today!
I’ve been using cartridge razors for years and I can’t believe I never took these old razor designs seriously. But it makes so much sense that DE razors are better. Of course 5 blades is 5 times the irritation with every pass, but it’s also how the shaving industry (Gillette) makes money.
All their new designs and features - it’s all gimmicks.
    Overpriced and underperforming.
I’m sick of the razor burn I always get. I’m switching to safety razors and I really want a great first razor.
I’ve been leaning on the Merkur and the Jagger as many have attested to their quality, but now that I’ve seen your video I’m hooked on the Rockwell 6C.
I’m a sucker for chrome and the 6C just looks beautiful. There are fancier looking razors out there both more and less expensive than Rockwell but the most important part is how well it functions. And the 6C is said to give fantastic shaves even compared to other top DE razors.
Man, an adjustable 6 size razor is just what I need to dive into the world of DE shaving. I can’t wait to get my hands on one and toss my old cartridge razor aside.
I do have one question though, how big of a deal is it to get one of those lather soaps I keep hearing about? Where you mix it in a bowl and use a brush to put it on. Is it really that bad to use some regular Barbasol with DE razors?
Thanks for sharing your well thought out list 👍🏼

    • @kevyshaves4109

You won't go wrong with the Rockwell 6C, its a great razor. There's no hard and fast rules when it comes to shaving this way. If you want to use Barbasol, thats fine. There are lots of online vendors selling some great shave gear. But my advice would be...take your time, find out what you like and don't like and just enjoy the journey. Keep me posted as to how you're getting on. All the best. Kevy 🙂

New to DE shaving and I find this helpful as I'm looking to purchase another razor. My favorite is the QShave DE which is just about identical to the Merkur Futur DE except my QShave cost $120 less then the Merkur. Still has the adjustable attack angle of the blade as the Merkur and the only fault is that there is no knurling on the handle for grip just like the Merkur doesn't either - I just wrap a thick elastic band around the handle in a figure of eight pattern - works great!!

Thank you, Kevy. Nice filming and comments. You mentioned my two favorite, the Merkur 34C and the Rockwell 6S. (I have the 6C, actually.) I had had a Parker Variant which was also a favorite, but it broke, in spite of having been treated very well and gently. Maybe it was defective? It was simply from opening it that it ended up popping open and unable to be reassembled. I imagine I could have sent it in to a shop, but I just decided to opt for safety razors with no moveable parts (besides heads, like the 34C and the Rockwell 6S or 6C). These two razors never produce anything but an excellent shave.

My new Rockwell 6S arrived today. I already have a 6C and the Rockwell Model T is expected to ship by the end of November. You can say I'm a fanboy. 😂

I'm looking forward to the reviews of the Model T. If it's made as well as the 6S, they'll be onto another winner. Cheers. Kevy 😀
