Speaking of homemade pedalboards (á la IKEA shelves), before i got a pedalboard i was a theology student with a handful of pedals on a daisy chain. I got some velcro and stuck them to my spare bible, which i held shut with electrical tape. Just looking back on the pictures now, good times!

I built my first pedal board around 89, could have been 88. The board was an old skate board that had started to delaminate, I had some generic Tube Screamer copy, a Boss OD-1 and a delay (think it was a DOD), all powered by wall warts on a power strip also attached to the board. Instead of Velcro I drilled through the board and secured the pedals with zip ties. All that was going into a Peavy Rage ( 1x8, solid state 15w), the sound was harsh. Still have the Guitar, an AO series MIJ Squier by Fender Strat with one bridge humbucker and a volume.

Go with the MOJOtone '59 PAF clones. Aged nickle silver covers. I have a set in an Epiphone Les Paul Standard, and I've never heard any PAF clones sound as close to the originals as these. I compared them to my uncle's '58 335 and they are spot on. I did get the MOJOtone prewired CTS pots with the bumblebee caps and the vintage push back gavit wiring.

Way late to this party, but I more recently discovered this podcast. For the volume pedal solution I'd use an expression pedal with the HX Stomp for the volume control. I like having mine after all of my drives but before delays and reverb so it does a different job than my guitar volume pedal.

I have three Earnie Ball Volume leads with broken strings and that design is one of my biggest pet peeve designs ever! When a string breaks you are done, working one minute, then toast. It sounds like your guy knows how to restring them, but I know of nobody in Seattle who can do it (you can find people who say they can do it). I’m a very mechanical person who builds pedals, amps, works on guitars and fixes landscaping equipment in the field and I have not been able to restring one, in spite of watching the EB video on how to do it and trying many times. The housing of the pedal is so well made, but the string design (in my experience) make the rest of the quality build pointless. I switched to the Dunlop (x) which are easily repaired if they break.
Thanks for the space to vent
I’d be intron hearing more of your experience with the EB pedal. Maybe the South is filled with people who can fix them
Now I’ll get back to eating dog food in my mom’s basement

  • @tylershaw3968
    @tylershaw3968 3 года назад

With regard to the volume pedal conversation - I’ve been using the VP JR Tuner pedal for a while now, and it’s great. The taper on those VP JR’s is really the best, and Ernie Ball seems to have addressed a lot of the issues with this latest iteration. It uses a Kevlar cord instead of a crappy string, and it’s now buffered, and can be powered by 9v or 18v power supplies, which is awesome. It’s a bit more speedy at $200, but it does also contain a really great tuner. If you’re putting both a volume pedal and tuner on your board, its a great space saving option while retaining that great feeling sweep of the vp jr.

I love 50's wiring with good 525K pots. I hate audio taper volume pots (like an on/off switch). I love linear taper volume pots. Great show guys :)

  • @MrBanjolio

I like the idea of using a volume pedal like a guitar volume control to get more/less grit from the overdrives, but it also changes the overall volume, which requires messing with the amp volume to stay at the desired (or required) volume. Would it be possible to have a single pedal with two inputs and outputs, each with a pot--one in/out/pot BEFORE the drives to control the amount of grit, and the other AFTER the drives to adjust the volume (in the opposite direction)? One pot goes up as the other goes down. Probably wouldn't work because different drives will react differently. But it would be nice. I suppose a limiter or compressor after the drives might help with this.

You guys’ first pedalboards were like pro compared to mine. I built my first one at 16 (23years ago)…my dad and I got a stair tread from Home Depot and drilled holes on either side of each pedal, and literally zip tied each pedal to the stair tread. No case. No protection. Just a stair tread, lol.

The early MIJ Squiers to have are these serials, in order. VJ, SQ, then E. VJ have USA electronics, they are the best of the bunch. I have a SQ Stratocaster and a Bullet1. Not all E series are MIJ, so do your homework before you buy one.
In the 90s Squier did a Vista series that was Japanese. Those are also amazing guitars. That is the series the original Supersonic is from. And the Courtney Love Venus. And a few other cool guitars.

Just to add to the patch cable argument for a moment. (Being a user of both Evidence and Soldered)
I started making cables with mogami 2524 (the big stuff) and standard right angle ends.
Bought some evidence audio bits. Why? Because I needed a couple inches to fit another pedal on my board. And standard right angle ends Don’t stack as well as the solderless (cause the barrels ) and they’re just bigger in general. Plus routing the cables was such a pain with the 2524
Now I’ve gone to using squareplugs for my latest. With Mogami 2319.
Now. When I started making cables. Squareplugs didn’t exist. And top jacks weren’t popular.
Now top jacks are closer to standard. And we have square plugs!
Also. Would only use evidence for a solderless system... have a couple George L’s I was given. Barrel is stupid large. Design is bad. Only use them for a tuner out. And an external foot switch
