I just bought a twin reverb tone master in blonde with the creambacks and I absolutely love it. It's unbelievably light and takes pedal well and it has alot of headroom. Great for cleans and overdrives. Not so much a heavy gain platform but with the creambacks it's slightly better.

I want to hear you guys talk more about amps, especially weighing the pros/cons of a vintage amp vs. modern boutique/handwired options. Would you rather own a vintage 66 deluxe or a new handwired 64 custom deluxe? Prices of course would not be the same, but I could see a strong argument for longevity and reliability with the new handwired amp vs. potential maintenance issues with an older amp.

I visited local builder. He has couple vintage late 60/early 70ties amps (plexis, the Sabbath Laneys etc). He let me shoot his creations against the OG. There was no audible difference, that will make me blow money on vintage gear.

I need to understand how the Ox and Captor X work. I assume if you can run an SLO-100 with one of them at home, it has to be through a DAW and studio monitors. That is where things can start getting expensive if you don't have a Mac, good interface, etc. If you buy an SLO-100 (or a 100 watt amp with no Master volume). Would love to do it though.

Good discussions. Speakers and cabs make a huge difference. I used to sometimes run a Pro Jr into a large 3x10 cab and it was basically a totally different amp compared to using it as the small 1x10 combo. I eventually rehoused it into a 1x15 cab and it's a blast to crank it up and let it eat.

Live, I used to play my Blues Jr through an Ibanez 4x10 cab and it immediately opened up the sound! Initially bought it cheap for the look on stage, but became essential to my live sound.
Good idea on your mod. How did you rehouse it? Ie. Did you use an existing enclosure, hit up home depot, or have a tech do it?

I have the original Two Notes Captor 8 and it does everything I need. I only use it for home recording and don't need it for live. They are like $270. Crazy good deal! I like that I can use it with any cab IR I want. I often use it with just the cab section of my Neural DSP amp sim because I like the way it sounds and the interface. Also, heads and cabs are the way to go for the reasons you said (cost, mixing and matching) but I also find they are generally much easier to load and unload.

I always prefer using amp heads over combos. I've got 3 heads going into 2x12's, and 1 head going into two 1x12's. The only combo I have is a Fender Pro Jr for a grab and go amp, but it sounds great boosted and gives a great classic rock tone!

I recently made the switch from using combos to almost exclusively using heads and cabs now and I have to say I much prefer the sound from the latter. Combos are great for easy grab and go gigs and setup/breakdown but sound more boxy to me. The tube rattle in my Fender Supersonic combo was also a deciding factor in making the switch as the tubes are just too close in proximity to the speaker to not be affected.

    • @frankenstein4106

I was thinking,a cool idea for an episode would be to prepare a list of twoorthree amps for three different price points (1000$, 2000$ and limitless) and compare the takes from Rhett and Zack. Also, I would asume that you have a cab, and rule that out of the price!

  • @sophiemilton5939
    @sophiemilton5939 2 года назад +2

The main problem with tube combo amplifiers is that they have an open back.
The back is left open so that the heat from the tubes can escape.
Obviously the sound signal from the back of the speaker is 180 degrees out of phase with the sound from the front. Bass frequencies are omni directional and what happens is that the out of phase low frequencies leak out the back, come round to the front and cancel out the low end.
I used to have a Marshall 50 combo with a pair of Greenbacks in it, I also used to have a pair of the same Greenbacks in a sealed 2x12 cab so that allowed me to run the Marshall through the internal speakers or the cab and compare since all other factors were the same, the only difference being whether or not the cab was sealed.
So what happens is you hear the lack of bottom in your tone and turn up the Bass region. However, the REAL bass frequencies are racing around to the front out of phase and cancelling out the deep bass component, so what you have achieved in turning up the Bass control is to lift the higher bass/low mid frequencies which is the region that makes guitars sound boxy. (around 3 to 400Hz will do that every time)
The entire boxiness issue comes down to whether or not the cabinet is sealed.

Fender price raise: Fender consumes many PCB boards and electronic components in their massive distribution system. Some parts are unavailable. Others are 10x what they were. Many things may have to be refactored because of adaptations that must be made to utilize the available components. This chip and component shortage will drive the relative cost of all electronics-based products. I don't know the exact impact the current situation has on the cost of goods but based on general trends I suspect the BOM is a few percent higher than they were. This trickles out to the services and systems that turn electricity into data. The internet will get slower, more paywalls will emerge, and the cost for SaaS software will need to be renegotiated. Welcome to my world!

Well, Rhett, I’m not a guitarist. I play bass.
But, I love Noa and your band’s music a lot. You’re a super band!!
And, I’ve been watching ‘That pedal show’ weekly since it started...
    I learned.
I don’t think Noa should get rid of his now rig.
I think he should get his ‘Brittish’ amp (never a bad way to go...😁), and mix it in a simplest way possible with the stuff he’s using right now.
Should be easy! Just get in touch with ‘That Pedal Show’. They’ll help you out, and it’ll make for at least three great video’s: theirs, yours and Noa’s.
Let me guess off the bet: a low wattage Vox type amp, mixed together with whatever Noa’s using now, in a simple The Gig Rig way: easy!
To get rid of the boxiness, Noa will need a 2x12 cab. That’s no big deal.
Get in touch; get on a plane with Noa. They’ll get you sorted, as they say in the UK (like: get you hooked up). (The video’s will get the bill 😀).
If not, I don’t know sh*t, can’t one of your friends help Noah out, like borrowing him an amp? Rick?

If your looping on a combo with effects built in usually the whole signal after the looper will have the effects on and you cant have a clean and an effects going at the same time like with pedals and a looper.

I do love ‘loud’ (that’s a relative notion) guitars a lot, and all the beautiful shit (😆) that comes out of their pedals and amps.
I love loud synths too. Loud (too loud...) drums? Not so much...
But, with guitarists: I always pray they don’t loose their ears, or sell them to get the newest Strymon or Line-6 whatever.
Being a bassplayer, I need a guitarist not just to know and love ‘their stuff’, but also to know and love the music.
Well, that’s becoming an issue the last few years.
Drummers are even worse, lately. The younger ones play mostly to RUclips videos and can’t stop trying to be Neall Peart in a Neil Diamond song...: well, that’s the freekin’ wrong Neill, Nealll! 🤣
But, I do love the amp sound above all! I’ll play with just a terrific bass DI for sure (haven’t found the best (non-tube) one with speaker sim (for my effects), though...), but there’s nothing better than a nice amp.
But, when will guitarists (re)learn not to use too much low end to get a fat sound? Have they become stupid? Did they not learn from the greatest guitarists? Not used a treble boost pedal with a great tube amp for ‘that’ sound in pop and rock/ roots?
So, didn’t they watch all the right video’s, than? Well they should!
For myself, as a bassist, I’ll play any amp (and I have a few (🤣)), as long as I can bring one, two or more of my little Ampeg AV 2x10’s. They are like mini SVT 8x10’s. Not too much low end on stage.
When I need to play subby synthy parts on bass or bass-synth too without a PA, I’ll just bring one ore two HK Premium Audio 2x10 PA subs (I got rid of the low pass filters in those, 😉). They’re not too big, but can handle my MeatBox, lowpass filter and octave pedals easily, especially on weddings or corporate gigs, 😂.
But, I’m as happy to bring a single Ampeg AV 2x10, a small amp, on of my simple Fenders, a tuner and a cable. 🤗
    🖖

Why would anyone pronounce it Rickenbarker? Oh and capo is short for the italian capodastro, so it’s “cappo”

To my ears most guitar/amp demos are unlistenable.....no real songs, just noodling with TONS of distortion. Not my thing. Recently ordered a used Blues Cube Hot....the guy got a beautiful clean sound from his strat and also a sound that I thought was fairly close to Robben Ford thru his Dumble. That's what sold me on the amp.

Do you really have to buy into the TwoNotes ecosystem though? Can't you just use a virtual IR loader in a DAW with it and any IRs you want?

Ouch. Yea, if I'm spending over 1500 on an amp I'm definitely not going new Fender. And if I'm willing to spend over 3k I'm going Two Rock for sure

Old school style classic design amps are cool and tempting but I'm going to pick up a 50W 5150III head for 800 this weekend. Not the best amp in the world, but a good one and high value for money.
