Please don't let the trolls live rent free in your head. Maybe those of us that have benefitted from your channel haven't been vocal enough. However, as a new guitar player I can tell you your channel made navigating this immense industry more approachable. Your insights have given me things to work on and think about. Some of your videos have just been pure entertainment. However, your channel has been not just enjoyable but also educational. Mental health is a real thing and it sounds like you have a supportive network but take care of yourself.

Man, real talk here guys! Thanks for opening up to us, Rhett. Its good to hear things from the perspective of somebody in your shoes. I certainly think y'all have made youtube a better place to be. I'm a live sound engineer, so I've been largely out of work this past year, and you, and some others have really helped me stay somewhat sane out here. Keep doing what you wanna do, and you'll find success, and more importantly, happiness. Here's hoping we run into each other on a tour or something somewhere down the line 🍻

Everything Rhett talked about how RUclips makes you feel bad when your video/channel is doing worse is a big reason why I deleted my channel last year. Everything else in the world was hard for everyone last summer, but on top of everything I was working hard on my channel and it wasn't going anywhere and Google was making me feel like even more of a failure. And on top of that, RUclips is just a hobby for me so I really don't need the extra static. Thanks for talking about it, Rhett.

I teach classes at a university and your discussion of internet trolls and their impact on you reminds me of how I feel each semester when I read the anonymous feedback that students provide in the instructor/course evaluations. Most of the comments are positive, but the negative ones can be brutal and have an outsized impact. I read the comments every semester, but I don't feel like the negative ones provide any useful information, and are basically just hurtful. I'm certain that those who leave them are dealing with other stuff in their lives, and for whatever reason, did not have a good experience in my class. Some people want to blame someone else for their experience and anonymous feedback makes that possible to do without any cost to them.
Be well gentlemen. Do your best and be comfortable with not everyone liking you.

It's interesting to hear this stuff from you guys. I think for me it's about the way someone phrases something. I think what is great about you two is you are kind aspirational in the sense that you both like really nice things, but you understand that most of your audience has no need for things as "nice" or whatever. And I have a feeling if a home player asked you for advice you'd say "Dude, you don't need a vintage Super Reverb" etc. I think that comes through in the channel and I think that's why this is such a good watch/listen.

Whenever I feel sad, lonely or depressed I watch one of your touring vlogs or one of the guitar-shop videos. They take me away to these places and give so much relief and joy! So they mean a lot to me.

Peavy wasn't great but it never broke. Peavy amps would take so much abuse and keep going. But that's pretty much all you find in music stores back then. Ironically all the the old blues guys in Mississippi played 99% Peavy gear. We spend 1,000s of $ trying to get an authentic blues sound from boutique gear.
All that trying to sound like a Peavy bandit and Peavy $200 guitar

Hey Rhett! there is a pedal company in Clayton GA called Missing Link Audio (MLApedals.com). they have the Peacock Overdrive that transforms you into Duane Allman. It's the tone I've been chasing for years (decades). Check out their pick ups, too. Interesting story behind those. Call the owner - coolest Duane fan ever - he talked to me for an hour.

42:10 the crux of the matter: YT is a great platform as part of your entire social media ecosystem. It's generally going to be part of one's marketing strategy to sell another aspect of yourself. For me as a journalist, it's letting me do some fun interviews I've wanted to do and cover some topics I've been wanting to address without having to pitch them to other outlets or otherwise wait for such assignments. Attempting to earn big on YT likely means you're going whole hog into content creation and production - which isn't impossible, but it's a major slog. Perhaps treat that goal as requiring the same intensity as starting a band with the intent to "make it" and working tirelessly if you're going to shape that into your big mark on the world.

29:12 You know... Every time I hear someone talk about a guitar company's budget brand: Squier, Epiphone, LTD so on and so on they always say it with that high pitched voice like "it's great" then they start to list all the reasons why it's great. If it was a good line of instruments, then it shouldn't need all the fluff talk. It should just be spoken of as exactly what it is. It's an Epiphone. By pointing out all the reasons why it's a "respectable instrument" to me: you devalue the instrument.
But hey, (raise voice pitch) That's fine. You do you.

Regarding negativity. So far this video has 13,000 views with 148 comments. Even if they were ALL negativity, that's only 1%. Here's the key. What do YOU think the silent 99% feel about it? Negativity projects the negative person's mental state. What you project onto the silent 99% is the only thing that matters

Ryan Burke from 60 Cycle Hum gets so much crap for every single thing he does. His playing, his humor, the way he runs the pedals he demos...and dude seems like a super nice guy. But he's got the right idea about those comments. He pins a dumb comment so the big person behind that keyboard gets to feel seen. Usually does the trick
