I spent most of this podcast nodding my head and saying "yup" over and over again. These guys bring truth to the world!
I’ve gotta say, having to do really quick instrument changes in a super tight orchestra pit has made wireless systems really attractive.
On the vintage split post, I figure 8 in the split and get 2 wraps. It locks your strings but doesn't make it a pain in the ass to take them off
You need to watch Dazed and Confused right now...seriously.
I hope they were joking...lol
OMG. I have made it. I am caught up. Best thing about tone podcasts, no matter how old I get, they stay the same age.
Absolutely! boom ops have such a challenging, important, and yet thankless job. In addition to having to keep the mic itself out of frame, They’re always catching heat for being in window reflections and for casting shadows. Not to mention the fact that camera departments/productions want to save time by shooting wide shots and a tight shots Simultaneously on two or three different cameras… i’ve seen mixers and boom operators come close to actual shouting matches with directors of photography over this. (They can’t dip in low enough to pick up the better audio for the close-ups, when one of the other cameras is still wide enough to see the pole.) I’m sure your bass player has had to deal with this headache before. The folks in the sound department are truly the unsung hero’s on a film set.
The wireless guitar rig in church debate is a little more nuanced than what you delved into. We're running 3 Line 6 Relay G10's for 2 acoustics and a bass. Those things are super user friendly, never leave the church, I've never stepped on one and unplugged it, and I've never tripped an 80 year old man coming up the steps to read the gospel with one. Churches need to look clean and that's 3 cables we don't have to trip over. I can keep those G10 units hidden beside the stage box or off in a corner. It's not just about me walking around, but all of the other people moving around me. If I need to communicate and we're mostly on wedges, so a talkback mic isn't happening yet, I can run over to the kid playing acoustic and tell him to take his capo off. We also use a single guitar stand for 4 or 5 guitars, which again is to clean up the stage instead of using 5 individual guitar stands. We lean toward traditional, so clutter isn't acceptable. All that said, I use wired SM58's instead of the much more expensive Sennheiser wireless mics for our singing guitarists because those stay in the mic stand and don't need to move at all. I'm all for reducing failure points. The wired mics have been gaffed taped down in the past, but not since 6 foot social distancing became a thing. As far as interference, in 3 years, we've only had the bass start coming through my acoustic channel twice and I would chalk that up to user error. We're now starting to use these value branded (cheap) XVive in-ears that are going to further clutter the 2.4 GHz bandwidth. I'm super scared they're going to drop out but I have redundancy now with the wedges that our frontline singers use. It's a balancing act between convenience and reliability and I get you. We may start to move back to more hard wired connections where it makes sense.
Love this! I use a line 6 wireless too at my church gig, because I do not like getting tangled in the cord. I love both these guys and their show, but I wish I would have not watched this one kinda when you meet your hero thing for me!! Lol.
"dipped in peeve"
Says he hasn't seen Dazed and Confused but references the movie twice in the first minute lol
I haven’t seen that movie but yet I know those 2 lines as well
Ehhh most mixes, in all of music, have a compressor on in the final mix; it helps push through to sit well with drums, vocals. Cory Wong, Chris Buck, David Gilmour, and many more have a compressor on all the time.
true, what Im talking about is having the compressor on before the amp.
@@RhettShull I know, but I don't really agree it's a crutch. It definitely can be, but majority of people aren't able to play at super loud volumes during gigs, or at home. When I play gigs, it just gives me more of what I would get if I was able to turn up the amp, while not adding any of the amps natural overdrive. I wouldn't be able to do as much bends, and slides, in style of Chris Buck or Derek Trucks without it. Appreciate the reply and the content brotha! You and Zach are killing it 🤘
Y’all, I’m beginning to suspect they have no intention of doing an opening track. Their excuses just ain’t add’n up!
Seems you've caught on as well. Congrats
I also heard that the new gibson originals had 50’s wiring, but mine did not, just the orange drop cap. And making it 50’s wiring made a real difference when playing with the volume knob!
The ONLY cables I've ever had fail were soldered. Just sayin.
you can pry my wireless from my cold dead hands hahaha. I love the shure wireless and playing cover gigs every weekend where we run our own sound. To balance me and the other guitarist I tend to have to go out in the crowd and balance the sound.
Just started watching y’all show a couple months ago and love it and love ya’ll!! I have been watching Rhett a long time and you seem like a pretty cool guy. Both of you to be cool!! I would like to I will share a pet peeve of mine if I may. It’s when a guitar player will not learn to build his on pedal board and sends it off to some one else to build it and then puts down others for not using the kind of stuff he pays someone else to put on his board lol. But that’s just my opinion. I feel like the Evidence Audio SIS is ever bit as reliable as soldered cables and I have built literally hundreds of boards using George L’s, Lava, Soldered and SP400 plugs too. Also, one more pet peeve if you need a cable so small that so you squeeze another pedal on your board you don’t need smaller plugs you need to practice more so you don’t need another pedal on your board. I say that knowing I have had board with 15+ pedals on them, thinking they are just flavors of paint for the canvas when I should have been saying I suck and need this to cover up my bad playing, so the more I practice the less stuff I realize I need. Some stuff I don’t care how good you are, you need have to have it like a delay, that is something that you kinda need or at least one overdrive unless you can dime your amp no amount of talent or practice will make you sound overdriven lol. You guys are great and like you said we all have out pet peeves!! Keep up the good work!!!
Been binging on these via the podcasts over the past couple of days and have to say I’m enjoying the work.
On the subject of being pointlessly asked to turn down, in Britain we have certain venues where there are sound limiters that cut the power if the volume goes above a certain threshold (like 80db). We played one venue where it was set so sensitively that we were (quietly) asking people not to applaud our playing as it was triggering the power cut. I could hear the string noise from my guitar that night.
At another venue, we got told we weren’t allowed to use amplifiers. At all. Cue a mad run around for a Sansamp or something.
I have never wanted to do any music theory or guitar lesson thing but I'd love to check out Rhetts course just to get some basics down... looking forward to it
The Nashville numbers system, while within the music theory world, is just really great for calling out chords in a gig/jam/writing space. It’s not super complex, and if you know your basic scales, isn’t too hard to learn
Agree 100% about the "always on compressor". I used to have a Keeley Compressor, and when I set it to the sustain I wanted it just killed my dynamics. Getting rid of it forced me to have better right hand control with my pick attack, knob control, etc. They have their place and I've heard them used to great effect - just not for me.
Would love to see an episode comparing Tone Caps swapout on that Gibson LP... put that myth to bed once and for all 🙌
Also please clip strings perpendicular. Clipping at an angle causes a psychotic edge.
Also on vintage Fender posts, I go out of the post, go half around the peg, and then into the post again and then around. It's bulletproof!
I get older but dazed and confused stays the same age
"When you work on a circuit time loses all meaning." There's your next t-shirt!
I liked Dipped in Peeve
I learned the 2 pegs rule from the DVD that came with my Peavey starter pack back in the day
Making your own cables: buy some heat shrink tubing from harbor freight. You’ll forget to put that on first a time or two also 😅
Andy Summers is another player who knows how and when to use a compressor.
I’ve just bought a bunch of plugs and cable to solder all my patch cables.
I’m based in the UK and I’ll tell ya it was hard to find mogami stuff.
Angled plugs are coming from Germany and straight plugs and cable are coming from the US.
US postage would of been $100 if I didn’t have a friend in NY to send them over. 🤦♂️
Wireless has been a must for me at some bars i play. You play in an old ass building with electrical issues, and you sing! I have been shocked by microphones in said places due to their grounding problems and its not fun. Wireless is the only solution to that. I had a sound guy say it was my amp not grounded properly and that definitely was not the case. One time i got shocked and went to unplug my amp and the whole plug came out of the wall. Thought about turning them in for electrical code violations but i like playing there so wireless solves the issue.
Dipped in Peeves! Loved it.
cables are a pain, they lay around, they suck your tone, long cables are expensive....feeling free is priceless. I love the G10 although I'm not a pro. Even at home. It's easier to tweak your pedals without a cable, it's easier to get closer to your drummer without a cable etc...
I used to be the guy playing on a small bar stage standing still the whole show with a wireless rig. One day my wife asked why I was using my wireless at home, I quickly realized the folly in my ways.
As soon as you mentioned the dirty fingerboard I instantly thought of Mike Campbell's broadcaster. He has never and will never let someone clean it.
Man I’m late to this but boy did I get called out by that wireless rig thing 😂😅
I'm starting to think that maybe just making an excuse not to have a track should just be the track now.
I think it already is........
Issa a jamband
@@richardrigsby5286 Mate you should be getting started on your brand, Rigsby's Bigsby's. You're leaving money on the table.
@@virginiusmaximus7006 I just smooth out the bottom of that B and my name is printed right on there!
I worry about axial twisting on guitar cables. One time I yelped like a kicked dog when I saw a fellow going around from wrist-to-elbow with a cable. It bothers me. Someday I hope to ask Jane Weidlin if she was counting turns- back in the seventies when I first saw the Go-Go's, she was into bouncing on the stage like on a pogo stick, and spinning around and around. As an equipment geek, it was totally tripping me out, but then I noticed a precisely matching count going clock-wise and counter clock-wise, so she ended the set with an untwisted cord that wasn't even broken yet.
Epically impressive skill, on top of just writing and singing and all that. I'll always wonder how long it took to figure that one out.
Here I am 5 pm in the morning thinking about square plugs Hahaha
It's nine in the afternoon where I'm at
I fully expect you talk about the new Novo guitars!
I asked Dan and Dave the Solder vs. Solder-less question when TPS was on Tone-Talk. Feel like they gave a good answer (and more detailed then on TPS in the past).
@@vandal_dk around minute 54:30
@@vandal_dk it's a good episode.
I use a wireless and I don’t play arenas or do high flying spinning kicks. I use a wireless for many reasons. I find a cable dangling around my leg annoying, as well as the possibility of me or someone else stepping on and yanking it. It’s one less wire sprawling across the stage. Others may have different experiences but for me the wireless has been very reliable, more reliable than cables, speaker cabs, tube amps, and pedals. The wireless has never let me down, all those other things have, ESPECIALLY cables. If it did ever let me down, I have a cable on standby to plug right into the next unit, quick and easy. But never needed to. The point about a digital wireless unit adding or taking away from your tone….dude, cables color your tone more than a digital wireless. Heck y’all use all those digital delay, reverb, mod, modeling pedals but don’t complain about tone suck from those.
And as someone else mentioned, it also allows us to walk out and hear the sound check on those small gigs where we’re running our own sound
Flats on a P bass is heaven. Flats is like a completely different instrument.
Bore oil for clarinets first then boiled linseed oil second will darken your unfinished fretboard. ie: rosewood, ebony, etc.
OMG, I love Rhett's take on wireless!! As a 35+ year touring FOH and production mgr, I cringe when I see someone using RF when it's NOT necessary, or adds anything to the show other than more complications ! Especially with a semi pro band on a small club stage.Or worse ,WHY does a drummer or keyboard player need to have a wireless mic or IEM when the whole time you're on stage they're tethered to your instrument?????? Wired is MUCH more reliable & sounds better. If you don't believe Rhett, ask Jeff Beck, lol I'm constantly having to take time to educate semi pros or newbies that either buy a cheap RF unit or have to explain to them how to even change a frequency, let alone scanning/co-ordinating frequencies with other units on stage with other band members wireless mics or IEM packs.OR other acts. Constantly asking "why do you want another failure point and if you do decide to go wireless, do NOT go cheap and plan on spending at least a modicum of time learning how to scan, tune and co-ordinate your gear.IF that's too much trouble, ( or expensive)please stay on a good $25 cable. Your audience & crew (if you have one) will thank you!
Zak , u being someone tht solders alot ( say it any way u like i kno what u mean ) what iron would u recommend for 10 , 12 hrs a week . Thx , love the channel .
I use a Hakko FX888D. I've been using for hours a day for almost 4 years now. I do have to change tips every couple months because I use lead free solder but it's an incredible solder station.
Great , Thank u very much .
Well I'll be dipped
...in anything in particular? ;)
Ok, I know this is going to be something that ruffles some feathers, but I am honestly asking the question to find out information. When talking about wireless systems the guys mention the more you add to the signal chain, the more of a chance of failure. I have only been playing guitar for about 4 year and do not use any pedals. I have a modeling amp and plug directly into it. Why are pedals considered so important, especially if they are possible point of failure?
Because people love the way the make the guitar sound
I had the g10 wireless for the clout and I sold it because I looked down and saw that transmitter sticking out and I hated it! Wired 100%
I think there should be an 'airing of grievances' segment on each episode ;)
That's kind of our whole schtick
one question I have regarding the patch cables... Why would you even make your own? I really don't understand. Youre telling me youre buying $100-300 pedals and then using DIY cables for your board? Tell me if Im missing something haha
While on the subject of the whole cleaning your guitar thing, i think it would behove you to consider that Mike Campbell and James Jamerson are/were both on the NEVER clean your instrument side of thing and if anyone has ever been dipped in tone it would be those dudes.
Thing I learnt from my front house engineer is always have a DFA (does f*** all) knob. 😉
PCLTSD Post Christmas Light Traumatic Stress Disorder
Please watch the movie. Holidays are a great time to watch classic films. Dazed and Confused 1993
Technically speaking, wouldn't the "threading" aspect of certain solderless options be a "mechanical" connection as well? Love the show, gents, but i do thoroughly enjoy Zach's ability to delicately reign in Rhett's opinions at times. Compressors, cables.... I love it! Almost a "now calm down now, little buddy...."
@10:40 😂 those are vintage tuners and the string goes down into the shaft so there's NEVER any string sticking out on those types of tuners 🤪
I don't think this guy even strings his own favorite guitar😉
I saw Mike Campbell tell the story of his Fender No Caster and he tells his tech to never clean the fretboard because Mike doesn’t want to lose any of the mojo from his sweat and dirt. It looked so gross.
So, I ordered some of that snake oil from the myspace page you recommended. So, I guess we'll see.
IT'S GREAT!
I would argue that I could restring a guitar just as fast with standard peg tuners as locking tuners
If breaking bad has an episode with Rhetts playing Jessie pinkman, I wouldn’t have noticed
“Clean your guitar.” How are you supposed to get the funk if you actually maintain your instrument ;)
What do you think of Gorgomyte (for cleaning the fingerboard)?
At this point we should just make the intro music for you guys 🤣
Holy god, they went on about soldering. Chill dude. Life isn't this serious.
UHHH yeah it is
What do you guys like as far as looper pedals?
What about Chris Buck? He leaves his cali 76 on all the time and it's blues magic
I don’t watch his videos because something about his voice bothers me.
You might say you guys were feelin a little… Peavey
Just preordered a Kramer Baretta Special, from what I've heard the stock humbucker is pretty high output and I know it's cheap, does anyone have recommendations for a replacement humbucker that would be good for hard rock/ glam metal tones? I have a Seymour Duncan SB-4 on my Strat which I like a lot but I don't want the same bridge pickup on both my guitars.
Any of the duncan stuff is great! But for a more boutique thing check out Motor City Pickups, they make some killer hot rodded PAF style pups!
@@DippedInTone Okay will do, thanks guys!
You can just bend the string back and forth and it will break off, so no excuses on that!
I’ve had unwound strings break within hours of doing that on a few occasions but will still do it if I don’t have a string clipper.
It would sure be nice if Rhett’s new band recorded an intro for the show. Just saying... 😜
John Snyder is a good dude
I feel like we need some guitar pet peeve trigger counseling. Maybe a safe place to go to avoid these things.
I had the unclipped strings. I
Just didn’t have clippers. I am clean now. In College I used nail clippers (for shame).
You can also bend the loose bits back and forward until the strings break at the tuner 👍
Hey gentleman I've been a patreon for a couple months but cant seem to access the discord channel. I am not that savvy so not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be most appreciated. PS looking forward to getting the Nashville # system.
You have to send Rhett a message on discord and he will grant you access. Thanks!
If you really want a theme song,.... I have you covered. There is a Facebook channel entitled,”the same video of the same guys dancing to a different song “. Go there,.... song number #115, My Chemical Romance “Teenager”! Watch the video to the end. Your welcome.
Lots of Ghost Pinging with the hairy ends of strings rattlin around too
I wish more men understood the difference between "I'm not a fan of this" and "don't do this, it's wrong."
Opinion vs fact. Which can fine, so long as the former isn't being presented as the latter.
Rule of Alchemy=LESS IS MORE
Had to look up Mogami 2319 vs 2524. 2319 is a smaller diameter used in pedalboards.
sERIOUSLY, Please go watch Dazed and Confused.
If a band member hadn't learned the songs for the rehearsal, he wouldn't be playing the gig.
My pet peeve, reverb. Never use it. Been playing 40 years, first band, first practice was when I stopped using it. Nothing worse than a guitarist who sounds like he's playing in a different place to the rest of the band, especially when he sounds like that place is an aircraft hangar.
man, wireless... it's literally the dumbest thing you can do unless you spend big bucks, and have a tech who knows what the heck they're doing. all your affordable wireless systems for the most part (line 6 etc...) all run in the 2.4ghz range, which is the same range as wifi. so while it might work amazing in soundcheck, all of a sudden there's 500 interference machines walking in at showtime, and you're screwed.
Rule #2 as you can hear on the SMG RUclips Chanel 🙄🤣🤟
I agree with you on the solderless cables.
I just want Rhett to know that he converted me to soldered patch cables. My board was wired up with solderless cables and between Rhetts videos and the rig doctor videos I replaced all my cables with mogami cabling and square plug ends. Best decision ever. Never going back to solderless.
I have a wireless system and use it for getting out in the crowd and mingle with people and also we don't have a sound guy so I walk out in front to check the sound from different angles and distances > but I hear ya that most don't need it and it does affect your sound.
So one of your pet peeves is "bass players"? 😆😂
Nahhh!
Lots of People use too much Compression its another type of Oversaturation

How could you forget to mention people that leave their clip-on tuners on the headstock at a gig?
That was being talked about in the live comments but we didn't get too it. Def a peeve.

Just thought I'd use this comment as a general complaint placeholder. Cause I'm really pissed.
The main problem is .
At this point you have to NEVER do a track -- it's your thing now. You need to be on Episode 1000 still talking about oh yeah, never got to that track this week. Maybe this has been your master plan all along.
My BIGGEST pet peeve is people that take the humbucker cover off. I dont care if it sound better to you. It just looks H O R R I B L E
