As much as I like the "What can you get for next to nothin'?" thought exercise, I think it'd be cool to hear the same question, but don't worry about a guitar or amp. Pedals are cool and all but honestly, the pool is so large, it's hard to know where to jump in for us not quite beginners yet also not quite intermediate either players. If you had $1,000 (or $500, whatever number makes sense) to spend on pedals, board, and power supply, what would you get? (Normal HX Stomp/multi-effects rules apply ;) ).

The Roland Bluescube did exactly what you described with new algorithms for different tones with the interchangeable modules.
But why is solid state expected to be super versatile? When the technology finally can nail the valve/tube sound there will still be complaints that there isn’t a “this” on it or “that” on it... even if the solid state stands toe-to-toe with a valve amp. Valve amps sound great and they aren’t obliged to be every single amp available.
And that technology is very close

I’ve had 2 Timmys and a Tim. I didn’t like either Timmy. They both seemed temperamental. Some days it’d be amazing and the best overdrive on the planet, other days they’d be harsh and grainy like an old cheap DOD overdrive. The Tim was totally different. It sounded a lot better to me. More consistent, and just nicer. Fuller and more controllable. Wish I wouldn’t have sold it, but I don’t know if I’d realistically use it now that I have a King of Tone. But still, my experience with the Tim was that it is significantly better than the Timmy.

If you can mike the amp, then a Vox AC4112 ($300 used), Ibanez Artcore AS 73 semi-hollow ($350 used), Hermida Zen Drive ($200), Dunlop Germanium Fuzz Face Mini Red ($130)

You guys should have Joe Bonamassa on talking about the acoustic/tonal/sonic characteristics of vintage solid body electrics -- I think he would disagree that it's all mental. I think there's a difference you can hear, similar to the one you definitely can hear with a good vintage acoustic. I also think the effect kicks in after 20 years or so, which means a decent electric from the 90's is a good candidate, without the vintage price. Consider what a 60's Strat sounded like in the 80's.

@ Rhett - You aren't wrong about the DRRI vs ToneMaster thing. TBH I think they should have added a hand wired deluxe reverb in that shootout because hands down for what those guys on TPS do, they would have very likely said the same things about the DRRI when compared to the hand wired version, which I feel like would have led them to like the ToneMaster better...

Fender DID make a cheaper version of the Tone Master. I own one. The Mustang 3 that I have is 100 watt with a Celestion 12" speaker (Ceramic). I paid less than $500 new around 10 years ago. My only complaint is that the open back needs to be a few feet away from the wall. Even with the very good master volume, it's too loud in my 8'x8' computer room. I gave in and ordered a Spark this week.

On the topic, of how a guitar makes you play? Im a LesPaul guy most days, i have a good one, a standard, but 8.75 lbs, a ringer, goldtop, nos pafs from mojo u.k, 50s wiring.. but when i play it? idk why? i never go above a little over the edge of breakup. And i do more of a b.b./peter green thing, the most i go is beano tone..Not a rock guy, more heavyish blues at the most...I think i really favor my 335, and ill really get into heavier tones with it...A really good 335 just gets creamier, rather then harsher as you add more ooomffff, and mine just does that very well....Now, i have a K/LINE tele, that just purs in the upper breakup zone. What a guitar..So, im backwards....And yeah, ill say it again, as an aesthetic guy, i tend to go for looks first, which can really cloud ones judgment. Rhetts pink sparkle NOVO, i want to ahte so much! And that might be one of the better sounding guitars i may have ever heard....Not saying its ugly, for instance prs guitars arent ugly, but i feel like im cheating on Gibson or Fender, im sure you fellaz get it! Hence, if you never played a K/line? Id have to go on the line and say, there as good as NOVOS, Sonically, as good as some fender masterbuilts/customs, And i went to go buy a 65 or 66 tele, and was handed the K/LINE, and it blew it away, but felt as vintage, so id suggest you try one. Im about to buy a Bartlett, just bothers me spending 10 grand without playing it, maybe find a great r9? for $5500? its keeping me up at night, trying to make the decision...

There is something about a guitar that has been played...a LOT! I have a couple of Partscasters that keep getting better? Maybe it’s all the vibrations going through the wood, maybe it’s how the wood dries out over time, maybe it’s how the parts settle into each other????
    --
Shit in, shit out. If you’re starting with crappy components that aren’t quality, probably should expect them to be “transformed” by time, and playing? There are lousy Vintage “Friday” guitars. Different companies have had different levels of quality control, through different eras. Although there are a few pawnshop darlings that use cheaper components, like Danelectro, Silvertone, etc. even they have had different degrees of quality in their components.
Companies like Novo, or PRS that have incredibly high standards put out instruments that are great out of the box. I’m sure that they will play into amazing “Vintage Guitars” in the future?

Don’t listen to these ppl this show is good. I would love to do something like this with a buddy or 2 , but aimed more towards people with reasonable budgets.. Most of us can only dream of having a good vintage instrument or hardwired amp.. I’ve been a student of guitar for about the last 2 years, now (35yrs old at the time); I am just starting to think about my “tone” and high quality gear, but I won’t spend >$2,000 for a guitar or amp..
I have a old epi lp @85 or 95 (according to date finder) I just played all the Les Paul’s at music go round near me that were under @$700- 800 and it just was night and day, mine was double the price of the modern used epi lps but it ahead been played and loved and just sounded soooo much better..
I’m looking to get a tele (hopefully American) as my #1 , but I am not ready to drop $2000 , when my players strat is pretty good for @$550 I think..
I know I have picked up a really nice avri 64 tele at music go round, but it looked like the saddles were changed and it kinda made me think twice about what else was changed; and it had more space in the neck pocket then my 500 dollar mexi player strat... Also if I am gonna get a tele it “should” be 52 style...
I know especially now there are many newer players many of whom are adults, like me, and I love this podcast and TPS but man I just can’t afford the gear that y’all ACTUALLY use and like , so it’s like everything else that we can find at the local guitar shop is like “ehhh” but the $450 pedal and $1000 this $700 that ... like really guys lol
Anyways I just wanna end this novel by saying thank you for being a part of a great online community (since we can’t really hang out at the guitar shop or even REAL lessons in person with the covid )
I’ve watched them all, so far , hopefully I can find ppl like you gentlemen to help guide me in my guitar journey, but until then it’s RUclips lol
