Saw your studio post on reddit way back when and was just hoping I could get an Iridium someday lol. After burning through gear I finally got one a few weeks ago, absolutely love it.
@@dimundYou’re very welcome. So I just got my Iridium this week. I connected it to another keyboard (MiniFreak), and a drum machine or 2. I dove into the MIDI menu via global, and still can’t get a trigger to the other synth/drum machines. You appear to know your way around the Iridium. Any suggestions?
Nice video and you echo my thoughts on this synth. I've been playing since for almost 40 years and I have had so much fun with the Iridium..... "fun" is a word we don't really hear much about with synths. I've been enjoying making my own wavetables from samples.

BTW a tip with the custom power cable is to order a backup. I film wildlife and go far out into the wilderness sometimes. I have at least one backup for everything. It can help a LOT when the cable breaks, because they often do at a point. So when I buy hardware I usually tend to get a backup cable for everything. Does not cost much but can then save a lot of pain. I will then put a text label on each cable so I do not mix them up. I once was at a penguin colony far away from everything and then my controller for my drone completely broke. Thankfully I had a backup at base camp so could just go back and get it. Yes it was a 5h walk but far better than doing a 1 week round trip! Next time I brought a smaller drone as a backup too. I think it is interesting that art and music has many combinations. Many of my lessons with music I bring to art and some things from art back to the music. Music for example taught me the importance of constant mechanical repetition which is something that helps me with cameras. I would just stand for hours and practice panning and getting focus right, just like with scales on a piano. My goal for the future is to combine film making and music more in the future.
Hey, dimund. Thanks for this vid. The Waldorf Iridium was totally off my radar because I've been feeling so overwhelmed by the sheer number of new synth companies and products available on the market that it boggles my mind. I was on a very long hiatus from playing live gigs, but 5 years ago was recruited by an old friend to play in his band. For this application, I've limited myself to playing my Korg Kronos 2 because it can handle everything needed to play in this particular cover band. But, for the music that I like composing and because there are just so many synths on the market, I got an Arturia's Keylab Mk 2 MIDI controller and Arturia's Vintage Collection of vintage synth recreations and other very cool sounding VST plug-ins (e.g., Korg Collection, Vital, Spitfire, etc.). With so many synths and virtual synths on the market, what criteria do you use to choose one over the other? It seems that most of them have their own unique strengths. Cheers and Happy New Year! ADDENDUM: Okay, you partially answered my question toward the end of this vid. Thanks.
Yeah, there are sooo many products out there, but I tend to look at x main things: sound quality, hardware/software interface, build quality, and what role it will play for me when making music. For me, I am not gigging, so the equipment I have reflects that. I also really value solidly built equipment that favors metal over plastic. I hate menu diving, so knob-per-function setups with big screens and well-designed UIs are important. Lastly, each piece of equipment has a role to play with little redundancy - e.g., Moog One for modern analog vs Waldorf Iridium for digital synthesis. I like having a small set of really well-made, powerful tools, that will last me a lifetime :)
I'd love to trade my Iridium for an Iridium Keyboard. I bought it before the Keyboard came out. Right now, I have its Midi connected to my Summit. Another great combination for stacking synths.
Hi Dimund. I Hope to hear some MKII Sounds from you soon. I Like that Synth and the Things that passionated People Like you get out of it. Greetings from a Warehouse Worker @ Waldorf. Oh... And pleased keep in doing those RUclips Videos, the lenght ist perfect because they fit in a Lunch Break....
Thanks for the video! Perfect mix between your voice and the synths, thx for that … didn’t had to adjust the volume while watching your video Great synth btw
Very true, If the equipmnt is not right in front of me, and within easy and comfortable reach, I tend not to use it. Especially my Hydrasynth and Digitone that require hours of tweeking. I just rearranged my desk after watching this video. Thanks!
okay, I was actually debating getting a moog one. But that will have to wait now that I've seen this. This is way cheaper, you can create sounds that you cannot do with the moog one. Thanks for what you do!
I think the Quantum is extremely powerful and capable of a lot more than the One. I prefer the One at the end of the day for the sound and user interface, but the Quantum is way more affordable for sure. You’d not be unhappy with either. Both are end game :)
Love the stuff, you're demonstrating. Really digging the sound :) You honestly need to do some more of these (that would be a nice christmas present for me, at least).
Speaking of "having such an experience on a VST" though there's a few I could mention, Arturia's Pigments 4 immediately comes to mind when hearing the Iridium. I'm not fueling the Hardware vs Software thing, since that's always a personal choice and there's no right or wrong with personal choices :)
For sure!! Pigments is amazing. I definitely still prefer the outboard hardware because of the tight integration with the keyboard, the knob-per-function interface, etc., but I’d never fault someone for using VSTs; hell, there are times when hardware is a pain in the ass, and I wish I could just freeze and flatten some midi lol
Hi! Love your videos, your sense of humor, the vibe, and your knowlege and the way you explain everything is really a breath of fresh air. I’m fairly new to synthesis and am in awe of some of the sounds you are able to create. I know it’s not your jam, but if I had a wishlist video, I’d like to see you walk through how to do a patch on your Iridium, then show how to do a similar thing on a VST, like pigments. Keep up the great work, you are an inspiration!
With the Latest Quantum BETA fw, you have an option of only using the 16 through Digital Filters and don't use the Analog ones. So just like the Iridium - 16 Digital voices stereo.
Yeah, I saw that! I think that’s a great option for owners of the Quantum. If they released a Quantum 2 with stereo analog filters and poly aftertouch, I’d be first in line :)
I have a Moog One and an iridium keyboard as well and bought them both based on similar reasons as you did. I don’t think there is a better combination.
That’s so cool! I got them, and then saw them set up on a stacker at Three Wave Music, which confirmed my suspicion that this is indeed a blursed combo :) Nice to hear you are enjoy them as well!!!
Thank you for the inspiring content! Very insightful for a fellow patch-creator and musician. I will definitely explore the idea of combining two instruments in one patch. My Summit is well equipped to handle incoming audio and has stellar FX as well. Should be interesting to combine with some of the other gear here.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!! Flattered that I could inspire you :) It’s one of the best ways, in my experience, to get really unique sounds that have a lot of richness and detail. Another great way to do this is to use a controller and send the same midi signal to all of them and summing the result through a compressor that has some nice character.
I think the new Osmose might tickle your fancy for an MPE machine. It's a wonderful textured synth and with your play style might be a perfect marriage.
I’ve been looking at it, and I am very excited about what it can do, but I think programming it would be a pain. Using it as a controller sounds fun, but I’m thinking of just waiting to see how that develops and if they start selling the keybed to companies like Sequential, Waldorf, Moog, etc. :)
@@dimund I think your play style may lend to some wonderful adventures, I have been watching some live streams and the thing can really come alive, I agree with you though that it might be better to wait and see what further develops.
LOLOL I know, but like, I should probably upgrade my audio interface and get some different speakers first, and maybe a patchbay and another Shelford Channel :)
Re the Waldorf external power supply: I have a feeling it won't be hard to replace. I bought two extra power supplies for my Hydrasynth from Amazon (one for home studio, one for gig bag, and one because I'm really paranoid). You have to make sure you match the voltage, current (amps), and the tip (both diameter and +/- on the inside/outside --- standard seems to be negative on the outside).
Great video and your take on VST v Digital Synths is spot on. I recently got a Roland Jupiter XM which is just fun and so immediate. On the PC I use Ableton and have the excellent TAL Software emulators for Jupiter 8, Juno106 and SH101 with Ableton's 808 style drums. You could somehow cobble together an XM like project in Ableton but then you would also need to hook up a MIDI controller and keyboard plus the time start the laptop and Ableton. Just cannot beat the experience of on turning on the XM on a whim and within 3 seconds you are building multi-part scenes with knobs and sliders and that i-arpeggiator (love it or hate it!!) and I happen to like its minikeys. Totally different experience. There's a time and a place for everything. More videos please!
Another video worth listening and watching. Never considered the Iridium. Would it be safe to say it’s a more powerful version of a Novation Peak? What are your thoughts on getting the desktop modules instead of the keyboard? I was thinking you could keep the One up front and just tap into the Iridium desktop module since the Moog’s keybed is soooo very nice. Just an idea. Cheering for the recent success with Perfect Circuit and wishing more offers will happen this year. It’s also cool that you don’t plan to conduct “reviews” but rather show us what you like about any tool by using it while you groove out. What camera are you using now to record your videos vs what are you looking to really get that will put a smile on your face and heart? Keep doing your thing and Happy New Year!
Thank you so much 🥹 It’s not just powerful than the peak but also easier to program! The peak is a great synth though. As for desktop modules; they are great, but as a keys player, I always just end up wanting a keyboard attached to it when I’m working with them!
The only thing which comes close to this is the Prophet X, which I own, but Im gonna be greedy and sell my Polybrute for this, more vids of the Iridum please, maybe some nice analog sounding pads with depth and motion, there's a lovely haunting sound on the Iridum called Icelandic Stillness.
When you play I see that you sometimes play with 2 keyboards at the same time. You played with the mini Moog and the Iridium at once. Is that something you recommend? When using keyboards in the past I remembering splitting keyboards into two sections, but maybe that is not possible with these analog beasts? I'm getting the Quantum Mk2 as my primary keyboard. I also have the Kontakt S88 Mark3 and Roli keyboard. Just debating if I should use them as a second keyboard or get something else like the Moog (expensive though). Maybe just a very small keyboard I can have below it and run software synths from it. If you have any thoughts would be welcome. It was a bit eye opening when I saw you playing on two. I just thought THAT seems like what I have been missing. For example when I play my grand piano I always miss having other backup instruments. Haha, sorry for my ramblings.
Hah, I do!! It’s my favorite synth it all time. There is still some unlocked potential in it, but we’ll see if Moog decides to do more development work on it. The sound is incredible 🥹
I love the vst vs hardware arguments... People really get into it over them... I'm firmly on the hardware side... I get that there are great sounding vst's... But when you look at the side by side comparisons of hardware synths that now have vst versions with the same sounds, the vst's fall short... And that's not even accounting the synths that the vst developers know better than to even attempt to replicate... But sound aside the biggest advantage multiple pieces of hardware provides is the work flow... It's just way better for creating imo... The most annoying thing with hardware is not having total recall between the different brands which is the best advantage vst's have... Synth companies would be wise to agree on a universal system that makes total recall possible between different brand hardware devices... Some started moving in that direction in the early 2000's but that was also when the vst push first started... So ultimately that direction didn't happen which is a shame... I like software for recording and editing audio, but not creating it... To me that's the best approach because like you said with new operating systems and updates you end up having to regularly abandon what you had to have the "latest and greatest"... At least by having your instruments separate from the daw functions you don't have to give them up after having paid a bunch of money for them when and if you decide to get a new computer and new recording software... Definitely a more economical approach in terms of not losing money by no longer being able to use the things you bought...
It took me a while to figure this out, but I’m in total agreement! I try to just record audio and midi and not worry too much about the patch recall. But yeah, I bought waves however long ago, doesn’t even run now. My old versions of izotope, komplete, etc. - same story. That access virus I sold? Still working like the day it came off the factory line I am sure. I pretty much limit my software to FabFilter, Valhalla, and Ableton. I have a couple of things like KClip that are for specific tasks, but it’s nothing that I couldn’t live without.
Enjoyed your video, stumbled on it. Just bught a quantum, I´m selling of some synths and luckily I have a very nice neighbour....have had, and also selling of some very nice top range synths, this is the most inspiring synth I ever had... Saw a video over ¨should I buy an Iridium´ a year ago, I commented back then, that many software alternatives can do the same....maybe technically correct....you should buy an Iridium (or quantum)....
fantastic work, this is the best demo I've seen of the Iridium -- you may have sold me on it! there are other options that I also like sound-wise, but the UI for this thing just looks so inviting. how do you find the knob-wrangling experience vs. say the Waldorf M or Novation Peak? thank you!
Oh, thank you so much! I’m honestly always so surprised when people say they like my sound design. I suppose I suffer from an excessive amount of imposter syndrome heh As for the synth, I haven’t used the M or Peak, but the Iridium/Quantum UI (hardware and software) is the absolute best programming experience I’ve ever used save for the Moog One. I’d like to get the Quantum MkII at some point for the extra knobs and I/O
This was a very enjoyable video. It seems this (and its sibling, the Quantum) have so much functionality (ie different types of synthesis) that it's really hard to fully capture the possibilities of this instrument in a video. One thing I've wondered is if this can get similar sounds to an older flagship sampler, the Roland V-Synth which excelled at time-stretching and formant-shifting which made for some very expressive "ethnic" sounds and vocal sounds.
My feelings as well :) I haven’t but it never really appealed to me. I really don’t like using external controllers. I just end up feeling very detached from the synth - if that makes sense. I hear people love it though.
@@dimund I can relate to that. I currently do everything ITB but miss being hands on with gear. My Arturia Keystep 37 at least has aftertouch though lmao.
Thanks for this video feedback about the Iridium! ;) I feel nearly the same like you about Iridium Key - nice long term vst in a box with great sound design opportunities. But Analog Stereo filers could give the synth some more mojo … therefore I’m not sure if I should wait for a possible Quantum mk2 ☺️🤔🙉😃
Oh it’s my pleasure!!! And yeah, Quantum 2… I would probably get it. I have a feeling it will be some time before they go that route, though. Then again, maybe they do it next year. I’d definitely consider getting it, if it matched the iridium and then some 🤔
@@dimund the mk2 is really out now ☺️ but I‘m not sure about this „hybrid“ mix of analog+digital filters - is the output stereo? 🤔 can‘t wait to see the first demos …
Om considering getting the Quantum mkt2. How do you think it compares to the Iridium? Sound wise they are very similar I understand but Quantum has more keys more Ram and more controls from what I understand. Its also more pretty :)
I ended up selling my Iridium to get the Iridium Keyboard, and I ended up selling that to get the Quantum Mk2. Having owned them all, the Mk2 Quantum is far and away the best version - premium materials, more hands-on control, more keys, more storage, and the analog filters are actually quite nice. If you can swing it, that’s the one I would get.
Thank you. That is the perfect answer and what I expected. Just like you I work in another field (I own a VFX company) but is very interested in music for fun. Im comming from a piano improvisation background bur always wanted to have synthesisers. Only now can I afford and have space to put them. VST are noce for choir, realistic strings etc but like you say I do not find them so playful. Feels a bit like work to start the DAW Kontrol etc. Not so with my grand piano. I can play 5min here and there - it is always ready. That is what I hope to get with the Quantum (and probably more friends like it in the future)
Brilliant patches! Yes, I do believe in analog warmth, but also in digital ‘coldness‘; I just like contrasts. As for the Iridium (which can sound pretty warm, btw): have you experienced voice-stealing malfunction when using 2 or 3 wavetable engines?
My rational side is telling me to get atmosphere and pigments, but my heart tells me to get the iridium but my wife might kick me out lol. Have you used the virus ti2? If so how does it compare to the iridium?
I have the desktop version. What MIDI keyboard do you suggest pairing it with? I do have a Roland Fantom. Do you think that may be a good MIDI controller for my Iridium? It does offer AT, but I believe the AT is not Polyphonic.
So now I am considering the Quantum as well as the Hydrasynth Deluxe, which is a joy to play...I want something otherworldly, that nothing close to a preset rompler, since there's 388888 synths that usually sound the same or mimic something else..How has the sampling been on the machine? I am asking because I LOVE samplers, because they do not have limits....
Great review! I see you have 2 shelford channels Im curious how you have your synths setup are you using mixer or a patchbay perhaps? Would be great to see you do a studio tour and how its all connected.
Yes, I need to do a little gear walkthrough, since a number of people have requested this. I just have everything going into my interface and I do my routing in Ableton. I really don’t like patch cables, so I’m at peace with the multiple AD/DA conversions that go on in my signal path. Rupert would probably not be thrilled that I am working at 48k, but I plan to get an RME UFX+ and an RND master buss converter in the future. So, that should facilitate higher sample rates, better clocking, and being able to push the Shelfords even more without worrying about clipping my converters since they will go straight into the MBC.
@@dimund Nice! I have a Lynx Aurora with 24 channels with everything going in to my preamps I use a summing mixer and a mastering insert switcher. Im still refining the signal path its always great to hear other ideas and how its working out. You have great taste in gear :)
This was my feeling as well. The Iridium seemed like a more fully realized version of their vision in a lot of ways. And yeah, I do actually practice on my One; I don’t have a proper keyboard these days for practicing piano, so I make do on the synth. Trying to save up for a Rhodes Mk8, but I might just go for a Nord. I’m definitely running out of space heh
LOL and thank you. I try to purchase stuff that isn’t a fad and will be useful in 10 years from now. I don’t think the Iridium has been on that many people’s radar, but it’s definitely one of those :)
I have! It has a really beautiful sound that I am definitely fond of, and the build quality looks impeccable, but the interface turned me off of it a bit.
Know what you mean but I don’t really subscribe to the view that digital synthesizers are just ‘VSTs in a box’. Optimized hardware and HMI are what make the instrument. You never get that with a VSTon a computer, great as they are. You hit the nail on the head when you said software is a PITA. It is. I still use it, but I don’t see it as an ‘instrument’. To me, it’s not. It’s a tool. And that’s the difference.

My goal for the future is to combine film making and music more in the future.
omg god ur sounddesign is top level! comes from a special place so inspiring!
What an incredibly thoughtful and kind thing to say. Thank you so much!! Really flattered ☺️☺️
I was in a similar dilemma and finally pulled the trigger on upgrading. I’d recommend it!! But the summit + iridium combo is also really dope :)
Ah!! I’m flattered. Thank you. Definitely going to do a video on the Mk2 soon! It’s so nice. Feels like a sports car :)
Thanks for the video! Perfect mix between your voice and the synths, thx for that … didn’t had to adjust the volume while watching your video
Great synth btw
That thing sounds insane! Thanks for taking the time to share, much appreciated!
Love the stuff, you're demonstrating. Really digging the sound :) You honestly need to do some more of these (that would be a nice christmas present for me, at least).
Great video, love the positive vibe and energy! Sounds sound great.
Thank you so much!!!
I got them, and then saw them set up on a stacker at Three Wave Music, which confirmed my suspicion that this is indeed a blursed combo :)
Nice to hear you are enjoy them as well!!!
@@dimund For sure. They are my “forever synths”
Flattered that I could inspire you :)
It’s one of the best ways, in my experience, to get really unique sounds that have a lot of richness and detail.
Yeah, it’s a game changer for sure. I could still end up getting it, but I don’t really need more gear lol
@@dimund that's a lie, we all need moar gear like we need moar cow bell!!!
LOLOL I know, but like, I should probably upgrade my audio interface and get some different speakers first, and maybe a patchbay and another Shelford Channel :)
this video was utterly captivating.
Ah geez!!! Thank you so much!! Humbling to hear this, and it’s rad that you took the time to let me know 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I cannot wait to see new videos from you
Thank you!!! I’ll be making more over the summer :)
Good tip!! Thank you! Now that the Quantum MkII is out, I might buy it and sell the iridium - purely because I always want more keys heh :)
Not that I'd be in the market for one any time soon, but I'm a lil more convinced about this thing since the algorithm lead me here haha. Subbed!
Aww, thank you for the support!! Yeah, it’s a great synth if you ever decide to get it. Never disappoints :)
It is. Its good to be able to...see what you are doing.
Yes, thank you! Just need to got one more camera so I can have some closeups of the screen :)
The low end is appreciated!
So glad to hear that!!! Low end is always tricky :)
Love your vibe. Just got the iridium keys last week and it’s deep…. Would love to get these patches, that Lyra 8 one is sick
Nice over the shoulder cam…. I need to get me two of those!!!😅
Yes you do :)
Awesome as usual!
Congrats on the affiliate.
Thank you, Steve!! Appreciate the support :)
Wow those are some crazy sounds. I really might have to look into this…
You’d probably really love it for scoring :)
I have a Quantum and Peak...athough some features are common , like in most Synths...they sound Nothing alike...at all.
Thank you so much 🥹
It’s not just powerful than the peak but also easier to program! The peak is a great synth though.
As for desktop modules; they are great, but as a keys player, I always just end up wanting a keyboard attached to it when I’m working with them!
@@dimund ok! Thank you!
Outstanding!! That one patch sounded sort of like Apocalypse Now! The Iridium seems to be quite complimentary to the One.
nice job - great patches!
Thank you!!! And thank you for taking the time to comment :)
Thanks for the video. I am about to order my Iridium keyboard!
I live the top camera ❤
That lyra patch is really nice.
Totally agree :)
Yowza, you have that and a Moog One? Time to find your desert island. The Iridium sounds amazing.
Hah, I do!! It’s my favorite synth it all time. There is still some unlocked potential in it, but we’ll see if Moog decides to do more development work on it. The sound is incredible 🥹
Whenever you get the chance MIDI it up to the Osmose since you love that polytouch. The Osmose is a whole other level.
Una bestia de sinte
you rule
Thanks :)
I suppose I suffer from an excessive amount of imposter syndrome heh
As for the synth, I haven’t used the M or Peak, but the Iridium/Quantum UI (hardware and software) is the absolute best programming experience I’ve ever used save for the Moog One.
Workout outfit for this and nice camera angles to boot.
Love it!!!
Thank you :)
let us buy or download the presets theyre amazing
Thank you :)
Yea, I have been considering releasing a sound set, but I’ve been bad about figuring out the logistics of releasing it all
Can’t go wrong with poly aftertouch synths. You ever use a roli keyboard?
My feelings as well :)
I haven’t but it never really appealed to me.
I’d definitely consider getting it, if it matched the iridium and then some 🤔
Well there ya go! Waldorf must've read your mind....
@@DepecheMoog 😜👌🏻
@andreasoberg2021 yes, I think you’d get along well with it then :)
the Quantum MK1 is even prettier than the MK2 in my opinion :)
@@lumpichu Blue is my favorite color so I'm happy about Quantum MK2 :)
Brilliant patches! Yes, I do believe in analog warmth, but also in digital ‘coldness‘; I just like contrasts.
As for the Iridium (which can sound pretty warm, btw): have you experienced voice-stealing malfunction when using 2 or 3 wavetable engines?
I have experienced this and it was corrected in the most recent firmware update - it might still be in beta.
@@dimund Very good news! :)
is it possible to get the "sessiest patch" ? awesome feeling
im gonna need a mop
My rational side is telling me to get atmosphere and pigments, but my heart tells me to get the iridium but my wife might kick me out lol. Have you used the virus ti2? If so how does it compare to the iridium?
I have the desktop version. What MIDI keyboard do you suggest pairing it with? I do have a Roland Fantom. Do you think that may be a good MIDI controller for my Iridium? It does offer AT, but I believe the AT is not Polyphonic.
Hi, what’s the name of the stand for your Iridium? Sorry I didn’t quite catch what you said. Thanks!
It’s a spider stand from K&M
Can you post an entire video of you playing? did you get a chance to listen to the beat I made last time using your samples?
I don’t think I ever saw a link! Send one :)
I like it a lot. Thanks ❤
I had a Quantum and returned it. The Iridium is way nicer. Great patches but are you really practicing Hanon on your Moog One?
This was my feeling as well. The Iridium seemed like a more fully realized version of their vision in a lot of ways.
And yeah, I do actually practice on my One; I don’t have a proper keyboard these days for practicing piano, so I make do on the synth. Trying to save up for a Rhodes Mk8, but I might just go for a Nord. I’m definitely running out of space heh
@@dimund Well at least you don't practice Czerny :) You have good taste in synths.
LOL and thank you. I try to purchase stuff that isn’t a fad and will be useful in 10 years from now. I don’t think the Iridium has been on that many people’s radar, but it’s definitely one of those :)
@@dimund Exactly! Speaking of German synths, have you heard the Non Linear C15? Pretty cool instrument and very unique I think
I have! It has a really beautiful sound that I am definitely fond of, and the build quality looks impeccable, but the interface turned me off of it a bit.
Sounds great! The whole analog vs digital just doesnt matter anymore!
Thank you, and absolutely! They both have their own thing and they sound so great together :)
Нет ничего более привлекательного, чем девушка, хорошо играющая на синтезаторе.
Most other synths on the market are stuck in the past, Waldorf is some other place entirely.
Can this make some hard gritty neuro basslines?
Geiles Teil
11:09 = Soundgarden, Kim Thayil, except maybe much better fidelity!
you re so cool ...
congrats!
hanon ? :-)
That’s a great way to describe it - tool vs instrument :)
Love your set up❤
Thank you!! It’s a pretty special place for me
