Those homes are truly a treasure trove and most likely a home of a parent of a child that migrated to another country. At some point I too will likely have to sell my parents or grandparents home. The thing you called a dungeon is actually an Adega. That room was the coolest in the home and was used to store wine, olive oil, and food. The wooden chest in the Adega is actually and old refrigerator that stored food burried with salt to cure the meat and keep it from spoiling. Loving the videos and your true enjoying of all things old. Keep them coming. You guys are great.

Keep us posted on all your projects. Honestly, at my old age I wouldn’t want to jump into more renovations, cause I’ve done that for 55 years. You’re both young with fresh ideas and plenty of enthusiasm and that’s all you need. I think it’s a brilliant idea to keep for guests who visit or even as a rental during the high season. Please show us the area around it and the street is on, if that’s OK. How long a drive is it to your farm? Views? Best of luck. Didi from CA and NH

The round wooden thingy is upside down, it is the platform for the metallic round thing you put in, it is for for hot ashes, the ones that turn like charcoal after the wood has already burn for a while and is not smoky, to heat a room. It is call a brasero in Spain. It would go under a table with some big cloth close to your sofa, so you can keep your feet warm underneath the table. We use it electric now.

I'm thinking that if the older items are still functional, it would make it less expensive to keep them so that the feeling of a Portuguese house would remain. People who would want to rent a functional Portuguese experience rather than a totally updated and modern updated one.

The copper pot in the attic is called "Braseira" and is used as a portable firepit, an old times heater. You put hot coal in there and the hexagonal wood frame goes underneath the wood round table like the one in the first living room, with the crochet cover on. In the winter people usually sit around that table with the Braseira and cover their legs with a thick table cover to keep the heat inside. It's a very efficient old way to warm yourself and heat the whole room where it's on.

Hello Theo, that platform with a hole in the center,( where the copper cup fits), is called in Portuguese "Braseira" and is intended to receive burning coals, to place under a table. You put the platform upside down...the flat part is up (for people around the table to put their feet on). In the hole you place the copper cup with burning coals. The table itself is round, and is covered by fabric that reaches the floor (it is called "Camilha") and each person, when sitting, gets up the cloth to place their feet on the platform. There were also electrical "braseiras".

And a city dwelling with electricity and a flushing toilet!😄 You must update us all on both places, please! Maybe every other show you could switch between the properties.
One question about the new home, does it have the capability to have air conditioning? And individual heaters in each apt (bedroom and living room)? Is the city area prone to earthquakes? How many miles from your land is the city home? I’m sure you have a million questions so I’ll wait to see if my questions are answered among others. Congratulations on your new home!

It's a BRASEIRA. On the wooden base was installed the round table that is in one of the rooms and, in the center hole the BRASEIRA with coal embers. Braseiras were used under large dinner tables during winter at dinner time, or while the family gathered around the table for a nice “serāo” Stories were told, cards were played or the day’s events were discussed. The long table cloth would keep the warmth from dispersing. That is how I remember we used it at our home during the 1950’s. It was really nice and warm.

There's loads of houses like that in Portugal, they're usually from old relatives that pass away and the sons don't want to keep any things because its too old or out of fashion. That " cave" is normally called Adega (cellar) its normally where the wine and some foods are stored

      @alone4you 2 года назад +2

Normally these kind of houses are in more secluded smaller villages a bit further away from main cities where the majority of the people are older as the younger moved away to the bigger cities where is more work. You'll find hundreds of them in Alentejo and in the North of the country also, they are very cheap compared to houses in the bigger cities. Normally they are very dated houses that need a lot of renovation and loads of them are sold fully furnished like this one because the owners or pass away or moved into a home and the next of kin do not want any of it. Depending on the area, you can find a full furnished 2 or 3 bedroom house for as little as 30 000 euros, some need a lot of work but most of them are livable and just need modernisation.

What an AWESOME property!!!! I love all of the antique pieces and furniture that you inherited. Most ppl would think of that as garbage. I’m sure you will incorporate old and new in your renovation. As you showed us around I had two ideas. 1) use the property as an Airbnb or 2) rent out EACH apartment. From the looks of things it looked like a 3 family house (multi family). Even though you’ve had that property for a year already congratulations!!!! I can’t wait to see what you do with it but I must say I’m so happy to hear you will be staying on your farm.

    • @bertiew6771
      @bertiew6771 2 года назад +4

Renting it out to locals is also an option, especially when they are being squeezed out of the property market. The house is too small for a multi-family, the one 'bedroom' has no window, it will take some rearranging and to do properly will need a fair bit of investment. From Theo's comments it sounds like they want to slip it. The boy needs a project and can reinvest on another house, using his new found skills.
Personally, I think he should stick to chicken coops, who wouldn't want one like the palace he built. Love it! Want it!

Also keep in mind that the two of you are young and in the future living on your farmette may not be an option so you can always have the village house to fall back on for a living space..living off grid fine now but with aging...just a thought

I absolutely love how energetic and motivational Theo sounds when he talks about working on the projects! He should try Motivational Speaking! He makes me want to build something every time I watch a video! 🐝 Bee I love you so much because how much you love everything you touch! I'm so glad I get the privilege to watch you two grow together and all your successes and some bloopers to! You guys are beautiful!

Great side project. It is a true gem. I guess a little tour of the village would be nice. It sure seems nice to have another thing to share your imagination on. I know that you can get burned out if all your focus is on one thing. Love all the hidden treasures and glad you’ve got a place for friends and family. I’m sure that not everyone wants to enjoy the rural lifestyle but still want to visit you. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi! Congratulations! Exciting times!
I am Portuguese, I live in UK and just came across your video!
I hope I can help with some queries.... the barber shop (not hair dresser) had, back in the days, a chair ( not a commode! So funny! ) and the bottom of the chair would flick from costumer to costumer... and the chest of salt in cellars, again back in the day (no fridge) was used to preserve meat in salt ( it was delicious!) .... the chamber pot is called “penico” in Portuguese... the brown clay pots, usually used to store or preserve lard....
best of Luck in your new adventure xxx

At the 6:18 point, the metal round device you were looking it is used to make queijo fresco (fresh cheese). I still use some that my parents brought from portugal to the United States over 50 years ago. You heat and curdle milk and press the curds in the device and tighten it to keep squeezing the whey out through the holes. We call it an acinto. They were all hand made.

Cute little house with lots of potential. One concern I would have, considering how hot it gets in central Portugal, is the lack of air conditioning. How about ceiling fans? Those bedrooms with no windows must be stifling in summer. Good buy!!!

@@galdessa1 Stone walls have to be thick for structural strength. The top floor under the roof could be pretty bad though. Maybe some mini-split AC units are in order.

That's a beautiful antique metal dry sink complete with the porcelain sink. Originally there would have been a matching pitcher to hold water that would sit on the bottom shelf. So if you see one that would be a treasure too. Many of them over time were broken or lost and luckily replacements are still available. Bee, like you I see all the treasures and value of older and abandon items. ♥️♥️🇺🇸🌻🌻🌻

It's so great to see your enthusiasm with your treasures. The beautiful kitchen door with the window would have been the main entrance at some stage. The window would have been opened for ventilation. All the old houses in Greece had them too. The kitchen and bathroom are extensions. So yes before the bathroom the chamber pot and "Loo-chair" would have been used.

'tropeço' ...traditional name for that little cork stool. Typically found in central Portugal in cork country. My understanding was that it was just a useful little step stool that folks kept tripping over accidentally... tripping = tropeçar. 👍 Best wishes with the casinha portuguesa!!

I do watch other vanlifers and tiny home couples, but they lack the excitement that you have for embracing the past and fitting the history into your style and upcycling, it seems you are one of the rare couples with great imagination, the others I've watched seem to need everything top of the line, extreme modern, cookie cutter, no imagination.
That's one of the main reasons I love your channel, it's exciting to the changes and growth, without removing the character.
You see the value of things, you don't need a 4000k coffee machine just to wake up in the morning, electric blinds because pulling a string is so old fashioned, that kind of stuff, those homes have zero personality, it's just a place for really expensive things and screams ' look at me, look at my stuff '
I'm rambling, but you get the idea, I prefer creativity, over look at how much money I have wastefulness.

The little stool is something sheperds used to bring with them since it's very light. In town houses it was frequently used to sit by the fire since it wouldnt set on fire easily and wouldnt get too warm.

In the box of barber tools. He leather strop was to sharpen the straight razor. I'm 65 and my grandfather was a barber. His leather strop hung from his chair and he regularly used it. And his old tools were the ones you see. He retired from barbering in the late 60s. The window above the doorways would open for airflow here in America. They are called transom windows.

In your attic, the large copper dish that you place in the middle of the wooden frame (you had the frame the wrong way up by the way) was used as a table heater. In winter the whole thing would be placed on the floor under a dining table, and filled with coal embers to keep people's legs warm under the table cloth. There should be a cage like frame to go over it so that no one would accidentally put their feet in it.

‘Light wells’ are obviously not a modern invention then.
And thanks for showing us all the interesting things which came with the house.
I loved the wash stands and the chanty in the cupboard next to the bed. The wardrobe and the chest are really nice pieces. I hope you’ll show us the beautiful linen that’s inside, sometime.

Regarding the chair with the hole on back for a pole: the electric hair-dryers I remember from the 1950's were a like metal hood large enough to fit an adult head covered with roller hair curlers which were about an inch in diameter and a few inches in length. The hair dryer was on a p[ole and lifted up for the person to get out when the hair was dry.
