I've heard they do put you under in the US and Canada where I live now. In my homecountry it was not an option and I don't think it was a thing in Germany where I lived for a while.

Here they can do it with twilight sedation, not fully knocking the person out for the procedure when done orally. They always aim for sedating enough to keep the person comfortable, and if you need you can ask ahead of time to be scheduled for a full sedation instead. They always full sedate children to avoid trauma.
Calpis and booze is a great combo! Pre-pandemic, we'd go to a Korean BBQ place that always had a 1 hour+ wait, but they had a small bar/lounge upstairs. They weren't licensed to sell hard alcohol but for some reason serving Calpico mixed with sake was totally fine. They were really good, and we'd get completely hammered by the time our table was ready.

I feel your pain on the endoscopy, Chris. I went for one in the UK, I had opted for sedation, but when the nurse came to adminster it, she couldn't find my vein, and started shaking her head and tutting, which really made me feel at ease. She tried to put a needle in and botched it, pulled out again, cue more tutting, like it was my fault! So then I just decided I'd do it without, after having such a shit time with the nurse the actual procedure suddenly didn't seem so bad, although it was not pleasant, and gave me stomach ache for about 3 months after.
I miss three Dog and Mr New Vegas radio! Also the opening of Fallout 3 with the song about setting the world on fire has burned that song into my brain.

Nowadays, here in Portugal, endoscopies (and colonoscopies are generally performed under anesthesia. You go to sleep, you wake up some minutes later, the job has been done and you've felt nothing. It's very nice. But up until about 15 years ago they were done without anesthesia and I've heard some horror stories.

The tube used in the endoscopy you got was as big as it was because if you have an ulcer, it can administer clips to stop bleeding. It can also perform tests for bacteria like h pylori. Otherwise your endoscopy sounded pretty standard, you just needed sedation.

Yes, the healthcare system itself in Japan is nice, but the doctors? It's a complete coin toss. Sometimes you do get a great doctor that actually knows what they're talking about... but more often than not you get someone who is at best useless or at worst malicious. And this is my experience as someone who can speak the language, I can only imagine what a nightmare it is shopping around for doctors as a foreigner with a tenuous grasp of the language. General advice is to avoid the smaller clinics and go straight to a big hospital, but even then that's not a 100% guarantee.

I don't know, I had Graves' Disease and I felt like I was pretty well taken care of through the entire process. The radioiodine treatment worked as well as it could and I now only need a blood test once every few years to make sure my levels are ok. I'm sorry you aren't having as smooth a process.
I've had two rather strange encounters on my last trip to Japan. One in Akita where a nice japanese lady who spoke english surprisingly well and asked me if I was religious. After telling her "no, I'm very much atheist", she kept going on about the fact that she wasn't with a church per say and that she wanted to invite me to some kind of meeting... I politely refused and she didn't insist. My second encounter was a bit weirder. I met some americans who were very, very religious and who asked me questions about Jesus Christ. They were kind of nice so I didn't push them away too hard and that's when things got weird. One of them asked me if he could pray for me. I told him to go on thinking he would pray for me on his own at a later time. Boy was I wrong... He put his hand on my shoulder and started a 2mn monologue about God, Jesus, my soul, etc. Longest two mn of my life... Then he asked if I felt something, to which I answered no and thanked him anyway... (although I did feel his unnecessary touching of my shoulder for 2mn...). Fun story in hindsight...
I work in healthcare and I don’t think Google reviews should be allowed. Staff cannot even answer reviews as it would negate a patient’s privacy. A lot of times I have seen unfair reviews because the person is in a state of grief for the loss after a significant medical event that has changed their life, like a stroke, massive brain surgery or a spinal cord injury.
fully agree, when i was in a pharmacy in japan and asked for something i can get back home without prescription they told me "no, we can't". It would have been a very easy step to just leave a bad review for it, even if they personally are not at fault. Instead i got something slightly less potent/useful for quite lot of money and left a positive review as the lady was vey friendly and tired her best. Unless a doctor really messed up i don't see a point in leaving a negative review and in that case you would probably sue anyway.
The last two podcast uploads on RUclips I've watched have this weird effect around 40:41 where it seems as if that Adobe AI enhancement tool was used and it's accidentally "enhanced" the audio there with bizarre artefacts at the end. This is something which I think needs to be looked into.
Imagine going to the doctor in Japan as a woman...quite scarey. Many doctors don't listen to their patients when they are describing their ailments and will quickly diagnose/ prescribe medication that may be harmful just to dismiss the patient, hence why they'll get bad reviews. Imagine going to a OBGYN and have 4 or more ppl behind a curtain staring at your cooch.

I was looking at Hospital ratings in Kyoto a few weeks ago because I wanted to see what the crappy hospital score was compared to the premium hospital I went to. The premium hospital got a 3 star, almost every other hospital in Kyoto is 1-2 star. I never seen the worst restaurants in the US below 3 stars on google reviews.
I got a bad earache in Kyoto - I found a clinic for ENT and went in - they immediately made it obvious that they wanted nothing to do with me, but gave me a long form (in english) and told me that the initial consultation would be 20,000 yen (about $180 at the time), before any treatment. I walked out. The next day I went to Kinosaki and the owners of the ryokan I was staying in kindly took me to a local clinic. The Dr was superb, gave me a full examination with a micro camera and diagnosed a bad infection, prescribed me some pain killers and antibiotics - total cost 3,600 yen for the consultation, 3,000 yen for the drugs!
Is there any other way to do endoscopy? I've done it once back in my homecountry 6 years ago. It was a big tube down my throat and I was gagging for like 15 min. Maybe that's the old way of doing it and we have something better now.
In the US they put you under anesthesia, partly for your comfort and partly to make it easier to do the procedure (since the doctor doesn’t have to deal with a gagging patient).

@@nicktankard1244The equipment is probably very similar, if not identical - in fact, one of the two endoscope brands I’ve seen used here is Karl Storz (the other is Olympus).
Just half hearing the episode, gotta be honest.... xD But yeah, Calpis doesnt really have all that much milk. It does have a bit of powdered milk, but I think most people who are lactose intolerant can take a bit of lactose without getting super ill. It varies from person to person, but most lactose intolerant people still can break down some of it, just not if the system gets flooded with lactose. Still, its surprising how Japan still doesnt have a whole lot of lactose free milk in kombinis and markets, or products with dairy thats lactose free or reduced. This along with having a hard time finding vegan, vegetarian, halal and other types of dietary restricted foods is a bit puzzling to me. Japan that is so prone to introducing new products all the time, and that statistically has so many adults who cannot take many milk based products. I think even more importantly, the Asian genome is also prone to develop osteoporosis in old age, and milk is a pretty huge calcium source. I´m from a developing nation, and we have all of those on supermarkets. Gluten free stuff, vegan, halal, milk of all types including lactose free milk, these days I´m even finding lactose free butter, cheese, cakes, all sorts of stuff. Here´s something to note for those who don´t super understand this subject - the only difference between regular and lactose free stuff, for the absolute vast majority of products, is that they just add a synthetic version of what the bodies of lactose intolerant people don´t produce anymore - which is lactase. It´s far cheaper at industrial scale to add lactase rather than trying to extract lactose from milk. It´s the enzyme that the body should produce to break down the lactose sugar that is in milk, into regular sugars such as galactose and glucose. Children mostly can produce lactase, but the body loses the ability overtime for lactose intolerant people. And when the body can´t break down lactose, it´s kinda treated as a foreign substance, which is why you get the runs and gases. That´s also what you buy from brands like Lactaid and whatnot - the enzimes to break lactose down. Which you can buy in any drugstore here where I live from multiple brands... last time I was in Japan I couldnt find it anywhere. :P

I'm not going to lie Doctors are pretty bad in Japan. They are going to treat you like crap. Normally when they come to Japan as a foreigner for a longer stay period and using the Japanese medical system you get a chest x-ray. So about two months after my chest x-ray, I was meeting with my clinic doctor, which I had to do every single month to get my prescription drugs for that month(even though I had a yearly prescriptions in the US for the same drugs). He says to me the X-ray looks bad. I need to go to the hospital to get a CT Scan. I go and wait in this hell hole of a hospital that looks like it probably did in the seventies. Get my CT Scan and the next month go back to the doctor. Doctor says I have to much fat. Well of course, I like many Americans is obese. I'm not morbidly obese. Then I start to worry that something else is terribly wrong because I heard in Japan that Doctors never tell the patients terrible news, they tell the families or something like that. So I send the CT-Scan and X-ray to my US Doctor, they tell me both the X-ray and CT-scan look normal. Now I'm mad at the Japanese doctor, who put me through an unnecessary CT-Scan with increases my chances of getting cancer to tell me I am fat. Luckily when I flipped over from my bike my apartment manager sent me to the premium hospital, which I didn't know existed in Japan and they fixed me up really good, but I had to pay more money outside the Japan social healthcare system, but not a problem it was so much nicer.
I disagree personally on the 30's bit. Worst 10 years of my life ever. Didnt think things could go so wrong. Health gone, watched most of my family pass from cancers, job hasn't progressed nearly enough to be 40 now and support myself.
In California, they give you the Michael Jackson drug before they do an endoscopy. They say it doesn't knock you out completely, but my husband is a big guy, and just had one. He doesn't remember a thing. Next time, find someone who will do that, rather than you being alert and gagging!

Endoscopy without sedation is done for pregnant women and people with sleep apnea.

Instead i got something slightly less potent/useful for quite lot of money and left a positive review as the lady was vey friendly and tired her best. Unless a doctor really messed up i don't see a point in leaving a negative review and in that case you would probably sue anyway.

The last two podcast uploads on RUclips I've watched have this weird effect around 40:41 where it seems as if that Adobe AI enhancement tool was used and it's accidentally "enhanced" the audio there with bizarre artefacts at the end. This is something which I think needs to be looked into.

Imagine going to the doctor in Japan as a woman...quite scarey. Many doctors don't listen to their patients when they are describing their ailments and will quickly diagnose/ prescribe medication that may be harmful just to dismiss the patient, hence why they'll get bad reviews.

I was looking at Hospital ratings in Kyoto a few weeks ago because I wanted to see what the crappy hospital score was compared to the premium hospital I went to. The premium hospital got a 3 star, almost every other hospital in Kyoto is 1-2 star. I never seen the worst restaurants in the US below 3 stars on google reviews.
I got a bad earache in Kyoto - I found a clinic for ENT and went in - they immediately made it obvious that they wanted nothing to do with me, but gave me a long form (in english) and told me that the initial consultation would be 20,000 yen (about $180 at the time), before any treatment. I walked out. The next day I went to Kinosaki and the owners of the ryokan I was staying in kindly took me to a local clinic. The Dr was superb, gave me a full examination with a micro camera and diagnosed a bad infection, prescribed me some pain killers and antibiotics - total cost 3,600 yen for the consultation, 3,000 yen for the drugs!

Is there any other way to do endoscopy? I've done it once back in my homecountry 6 years ago. It was a big tube down my throat and I was gagging for like 15 min. Maybe that's the old way of doing it and we have something better now.
In the US they put you under anesthesia, partly for your comfort and partly to make it easier to do the procedure (since the doctor doesn’t have to deal with a gagging patient).

@@nicktankard1244The equipment is probably very similar, if not identical - in fact, one of the two endoscope brands I’ve seen used here is Karl Storz (the other is Olympus).

But yeah, Calpis doesnt really have all that much milk. It does have a bit of powdered milk, but I think most people who are lactose intolerant can take a bit of lactose without getting super ill. It varies from person to person, but most lactose intolerant people still can break down some of it, just not if the system gets flooded with lactose.
Still, its surprising how Japan still doesnt have a whole lot of lactose free milk in kombinis and markets, or products with dairy thats lactose free or reduced.
This along with having a hard time finding vegan, vegetarian, halal and other types of dietary restricted foods is a bit puzzling to me. Japan that is so prone to introducing new products all the time, and that statistically has so many adults who cannot take many milk based products. I think even more importantly, the Asian genome is also prone to develop osteoporosis in old age, and milk is a pretty huge calcium source.
I´m from a developing nation, and we have all of those on supermarkets. Gluten free stuff, vegan, halal, milk of all types including lactose free milk, these days I´m even finding lactose free butter, cheese, cakes, all sorts of stuff.
Here´s something to note for those who don´t super understand this subject - the only difference between regular and lactose free stuff, for the absolute vast majority of products, is that they just add a synthetic version of what the bodies of lactose intolerant people don´t produce anymore - which is lactase. It´s far cheaper at industrial scale to add lactase rather than trying to extract lactose from milk.
It´s the enzyme that the body should produce to break down the lactose sugar that is in milk, into regular sugars such as galactose and glucose. Children mostly can produce lactase, but the body loses the ability overtime for lactose intolerant people. And when the body can´t break down lactose, it´s kinda treated as a foreign substance, which is why you get the runs and gases.
That´s also what you buy from brands like Lactaid and whatnot - the enzimes to break lactose down. Which you can buy in any drugstore here where I live from multiple brands... last time I was in Japan I couldnt find it anywhere. :P

I'm not going to lie Doctors are pretty bad in Japan. They are going to treat you like crap. Normally when they come to Japan as a foreigner for a longer stay period and using the Japanese medical system you get a chest x-ray. So about two months after my chest x-ray, I was meeting with my clinic doctor, which I had to do every single month to get my prescription drugs for that month(even though I had a yearly prescriptions in the US for the same drugs). He says to me the X-ray looks bad. I need to go to the hospital to get a CT Scan. I go and wait in this hell hole of a hospital that looks like it probably did in the seventies. Get my CT Scan and the next month go back to the doctor. Doctor says I have to much fat.
Well of course, I like many Americans is obese. I'm not morbidly obese. Then I start to worry that something else is terribly wrong because I heard in Japan that Doctors never tell the patients terrible news, they tell the families or something like that. So I send the CT-Scan and X-ray to my US Doctor, they tell me both the X-ray and CT-scan look normal. Now I'm mad at the Japanese doctor, who put me through an unnecessary CT-Scan with increases my chances of getting cancer to tell me I am fat.
Luckily when I flipped over from my bike my apartment manager sent me to the premium hospital, which I didn't know existed in Japan and they fixed me up really good, but I had to pay more money outside the Japan social healthcare system, but not a problem it was so much nicer.

In California, they give you the Michael Jackson drug before they do an endoscopy. They say it doesn't knock you out completely, but my husband is a big guy, and just had one. He doesn't remember a thing. Next time, find someone who will do that, rather than you being alert and gagging!
Yeah - I live in Cyprus and they gave me that stuff - propofol - knocked me out for an endoscopy and colonoscopy done on the same morning! Didn’t feel a thing!

It's come out that Japan has been making sure women aren't being accepted in the health care field as Drs. I think they've been scoring them lower on purpose so the men will get ahead. That story made me think maybe that Dr shouldn't have been practicing at all.
