9:40 -Sauce face (so-su gao) means you have strong facial features unlike the traditional Japanese person. (ie Abe Hiroshi, Tomoya Nagase, Hirai Ken)
    There are others too
-Salt face (shio gao) means you have fair skin with a thin and light face. (ie Takahashi Issei, Hoshino Gen)
-Soy sauce face (shoyu gao) means you have light features or a traditionally Japanese-looking face. (ie Ninomiya Kazunari, Mukai Osamu)
-Miso face (miso gao) is a traditionally Japanese-looking face but with a few stronger features. (ie Watanabe Ken, Matsudaira Ken)
-Ketchup face (kechappu gao) is a type of face in-between sauce face and shoyu face. (ie Kaname Jun, Takenouchi Yutaka)
-Sugar face (satou gao) means you have a baby-face. (Kamiki Ryunosuke, Chiba Yudai)
-Vinegar face (su gao) is a face with lighter features than salt face. (ie Fujiwara Motoo, Moriyama Mirai)
-Mayonnaise face (mayoneezu gao) means you have a youthful but mature-looking face. (ie Okada Masaki, Inagaki Goro)

What is "moon face"? That's what a friend calls his wife. I hope it's complimentary because she is beautiful. Thanks for the details and the examples of well-known Japanese people with such faces.. Do you know more about the origins of such expressions? I'm always curious about origins of words and phrases. Sometimes the backstory is as interesting as the espression.

@@lynda.grace.14 I don’t think I’ve heard of moon face before. Maybe it means her face is round or glowing?
From what I could find, Sauce face and Shoyu (soy sauce) face were buzzwords among young women in 1988. They used it to describe 2 types of men that were seen as attractive at the time. Some liked the more foreign-looking men and some liked the more traditional-looking men. The other types of faces came a bit later when some faces didn’t exactly fit in either category.

There are SO many wonderful students whom I’ve taught, and I often think about them. I hope they’re doing well, and think back on their unique talents and personality. It’s a weird job, teaching. It’s a bit like Groundhog Day, as the years blend into each other. But it’s also always different.

As someone who struggles remembering names of people, I could not understand how one particular teacher could remember our names in first semester at university. She even remembered and greeted me with name several years later when we randomly met on street or corridor.
We deffinitely had some caring teachers at highschool, teaching us manners and life advices, not just facts of subjects they were teaching. In fact, thhey even said that is more important for us than subject knowledge.
And we return our caring to them at times, surprising them at their birthday or attending funeral when teacher's husband passed away.

As a Dutchy who previously owned a fiat 500, which was 10 years old and had 170.000 kilometers on the meter (lol, i was broke and it still drove well), the battery can die in cold and wet conditions, like winter or autumn. 2 months on a boat could definately kill a car battery.

In Asia, face attractiveness are generally divided into two: plain and not plain. The "not plain" part has a lot of descriptors all over Asia, among Japanese female when describing men, it is "sauced face" to let their peers know what kind of attractiveness you should be expecting.
"Plain face" is that default Japanese beauty standards shown in their paintings, which is pretty much derived from Tang Dynasty that they obssessed over. Now, smear "sauce" all over that plain-ness and you get their descriptor.
A Korean colleague who studied in Japan for example, called my housemate "shio kao" - looks like a traditional Japanese handsomeness template refined with instagram filter (salt, the default seasoning). While I got the "shoyu kao" descriptor - probably a Japanese contrast effect like well defined nose bridge.

“The next type of face would be the “sauce face.” Sauce in this case refers to the Worcestershire sauce or the sauce used for tonkatsu in Japanese cuisine. Someone with a “sauce-face” does not have a “typical Japanese” face but instead resembles more like a Westerner or a Middle-Easterner due to his clear-cut facial features (hori no fukai kao 彫りの深い顔).” - Angeline Tan

    • @danalawton2986

Yes and "hori fukai" or "hori no fukai kao", is basically a person with deep set features, mainly the eyes with a prominent bridge on one's nose. "Hori" means something like a "hole" and "fukai" is deep... i.e., deep set features. In Japan, because most people do not have deep set features, when one has them it is a sign of beauty or handsomeness.

I do think the channel needs to put someone in charge of communication. I think the series (and past series) downfall is that one plan gets announced, and then it gets changed, but the announcements of those changes are hidden in various platforms (a video, a podcast episode, a response to a Reddit thread). It would have been clearer cut, and a whole less confusing, to post a schedule for uploads on the YT page and then post any amendments to it there.

I ran into my old math teacher from school in a burger king. I was terrible with maths, and was about to fail my last chance. I made a special request to be placed in her class, as I heard she was a good teacher. Many students requested to be in her class, but thankfully she accepted me, and she was the reason I was able to pass maths and get into a good university and into the pre med program.
I hesitated, but eventually went up to her and said hello. I thanked her for what she did for me, and I wished her the best for the future. It was awkward, and I immediately regretted talking to her. She clearly didn't want to be bothered, and I felt embarrassed afterwards.

To clarify the "small face" comment for you Chris, I have lived in Japan for about 5 years now and I get this one a lot. After a lot of confusion the first few times hearing it I asked about it. It is indeed a compliment. In Japanese pop culture having a "small face" is associated with being attractive and considered a high beauty standard. It's good for both genders (I'm a guy). Having a big face is generally associated with less attractiveness.

    Flat Batteries In Cars
My husband is a mechanic of 50 years, 25 years as a Royal Household mechanic.
Okay, if your car battery is fully discharged (fully flat) for any reason, it is ruined, no good. You can put a little bit of charge back into it, but it will quickly go flat again.
If put a battery load tester on it and it drops below 9 volts when it's under load, it is completely useless.
    Get a new one.
Unfortunately most professional mechanics don't know this and they are merely taking your money if you keep going to the garage to sort the problem with the same battery
Even those devices that supposedly renew flat batteries don't work as they promise (tried one. Don't waste your money).
    Get a new battery.
Hope this helps anyone with car issues out there.

This is an East Asian standard, it is why we love hair styles with bangs, it frames our face to make it smaller, the "helmet" hair at the same time makes our head silhouette look cuter.

AKAI electronics (Akai means "red" in Japanese;) brand is essentially all the Matshushita products which are discounted / left over from the previous year. Excellent value. I had cheap speakers from AKAI but when I looked at the back plate they were high end Panasonic.

Pete, I just got a new Samsung S23 Ultra (That's what I just got Black Friday sale), I thought it was just me. My fingerprints don't work very well. It works fine on my Samsung Galaxy A71, but not my S23. My fingers are very dry too. It's quite annoying. 😅

When will you release the next JAJ episode? i read somewhere that its on hold because you're trying to outsmart the RUclips algorithm, which is fine, but the long break is kind of ironic since the series is titled "Non-stop North"

My understanding of small face is a european looking face far removed from a far eastern one. They tend to have flat faces which look bigger to them I guess. A weird self hating beauty standard if I'm right.

"I think 2024 is going to be a good year"..... NOOOOO Chris, if you say it then it won't happen. People have been saying this the past decade and it just leads to one disastrous year after another. ISIS, Trump, Brexit, Covid, Mass celebrity death, Ukraine, Israel-Palestine war, Cyberpunk 2077 launch, the brewery in my hometown closing down, my sister getting all the luck and me being left with not as much luck... all these things are caused by people saying 'it's going to be a good year'!!!

Sauce face is someone who is not Japanese but has very pronounced features such as large eyes, etc. So I doubt it was meant as an insult. 😊

Sauce face. How bizarre. One of my Japanese friends always calls his wife a moon face. What does that mean? Round? Pale? Blotchy? I'll have to delve deeper into the question. Ah, should have read the comments thread first. Thanks @Yoshinator54

It seems "sauce-face" means 'typically Western looking'. As opposed to "soy-sauce-face", which is stereotypically Japanese.
At least no has called you "vinegar-face". Poor Ken Watanabe.

Many people have literally a small face. Their face is physically smaller sized than what is typical.
