Apologies for bringing this up again folks, we recorded this episode before the recent abroad in japan video. After recording this, I realised it was worthy of discussion on the main channel.
Jonny Somali has nothing on the criminality of chris. He once told a toll booth attendant he was going to pay, then just drove away cackling. It's true. I saw a video of it
I just came back from my trip to Japan. Traveled to Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and Yokohama (returning to Tokyo at the end). It was my first time using the Shinkansen and decided to skip the JR Railpass due to the increase. We only used the bullet train for the Tokyo > Osaka and Osaka > Tokyo bit though, since the travel time with the other locations via regular trains was fast enough. The benefits of the pass, especially given we used the green cars for the shinkansen, really didn't balance itself out to needing it at all. Getting the tickets from the machine is stupid easy and there's zero need to wait in a long line for the offices to get your accommodations like so many do with the pass (though you could use the pass with the machines too). Given how weak the yen is, taxing tourists a little is totally fine. Anyone that complains about paying 200 yen more for things like accommodations are idiots akin to those who complain that gas goes up by $0.01 for the first time in years. That won't prevent anyone from traveling to Japan, unless they're incredibly stupid to a degree that is worse than the norm... like they're at serious risk of drowning in a tiny puddle during a light drizzle. The problem though is if the yen ever got stronger... like a lot closer to USD in value, like it was 10+ years ago. While the small taxes still won't mean much, inflated prices absolutely will. Like I bought some high price things while I was there purely due to the fact that it was at a discount thanks to the weaker yen. That's hundreds or even thousands of dollars I wouldn't have spent in Japan if the yen were stronger than it currently is.
I absolutely love the audiobook, Chris! Yesterday, as I was walking home from work, I was on the Cat Nation episode. And when I arrive home and tuned into my TV/Prime, the Cat Nation episode popped up!! 😆
About the encephalitis, the mosquitos themselves aren't a problem from what I gathered when researching on the internet before going to stay in Japan for half a year. It's when you are out on the countryside and close to farms that the mosquitos may contract the disease from farm pigs mainly. It appears that water fowl may be part of the natural spreading cycle as well. But inside cities you are exceedingly unlikely to contract it.
I definitely remember coming to Japan in late 2009 when the Yen wasn't so strong and it SUCKED. I am on my way back this weekend and am happy to finally be there when the Yen is in a nice spot (for us)
LOL. Pete should know that not paying the bus ticket in Belgrade is quite common. He unknowingly integrated himself with the rest. I do hope that the rest of his stay was pleasant.
If you could split the screen so we can see both of you the whole time, I think I’d like that a bit better than swapping to whoever is talking. Just an idea tho! Love having it be on yt tho!!
My husband and I visited Japan last month right before the JR Rail price hike. We went from Tokyo to Kyoto to Hiroshima on the shin. It was still a pain to use it with the JR rail pass due to train eligibility… the most convenient/fastest trains are not included with pass. We’ll definitely use the LCCs like Skymark or Jetstar or Peach next time. Even with the crap exchange rate, the JR Rail pass is listed in USD so it is now way too expensive when an LCC will get you where you need to go quicker and for half the price.
Was wondering why there wasn't an episode for a while and came to check the channel. For some reason this episode wasn't presented in my subscription feed, did this happen to anybody else?
Im totally enjoying the Abrod In Japan audiobook, also read to you by Mr Affable himself. The stories in them are quite interesting, peering into norms of the Japanese, the quirks of an awkward British man learning conversations and the funny sitiations where misunderstandings will land you
Dear curious Chris and peering Pete, I have a great idea to deal with all the nuisance RUclipsrs and streamers in Japan. Let's organize a boxing match between them and a wild bear. If the menace wins, they escape cancellation and further reprimand, just like how Logan Paul did in 2018 fighting KSI. If the bear wins, they get to eat the loser. Yours sincerely, Sayantan.
on the Encephalitis topic in the Fax Machine, well.... i've had encephalitis years back. the 3 months hospital stint wasnt fun, nor was the fact that no medication seemed to work and doctors didnt know whether i'd make it. eventually recovered though with minor brain damage, for me in particular my brain functions slower due to it, however can cause far more severe effects if not death. also i live in the Netherlands and never left the country before it, Encephalitis isnt exactly something we consider vaxxing against generally.
Thankfully I was able to get the rail pass for our trip in November before the price increase. It absolutely would not have been worth it at the current price.
Fax machine question: Chris you’ve only featured Niigata in a few videos, what do you think about the area? What is there to do there? For Pete, have you been to Niigata? After Chris’s answer would you want to go? Would either of you ever consider living there?
Re "Amazing Grace", it's a hymn about repentance, and the hope of redemption. It was written by a former slaveowner and trader who'd then become an abolitionist. Its place at Hiroshima might give it the most heavily-loaded meaning.
Frankly if the Japanese police force detains those "baka" is good. There is no excuse to be an idiot... Japan is a beautiful country. Love it. Love the culture and the people. Kind and "awkwardly" generous and curious. My two pennies on the matter.
I am.on a Shikansen going to Tokyo and sign came up saying'JR East and the Police are on Alert' but no indication why. May be hiding in train toilets will no longer work!!
Countries should just massively fine YT and other platforms if the creators don't behave. Fine them so much that it's like 10x the amount they would earn from letting that person stay on their platform.
But I mean, there was a guy in a tiny little blue truck collecting piles of garbage bags piled on the corners of the alleys... So, I mean, the core infrastructure is there and with the amount of police they have out on the street, surely they can afford some more public amenities workers for peak times in Tokyo...(?)
#FaxMachineQuestion Hey guys, love the podcast. Been watching Chris' channel for years, I found it right around Journey Across Japan 1 and binged it, you kept me sane after a bad breakup. Your British charm and sarcastic humor is unmatched. My best friend is getting stationed outside of Tokyo, about an hour by car, I cannot remember the name of the city, my other friends and I are in the very early stages of planning a trip for May of 2025, it will be my second time in Tokyo, their first. My question is could you guys recommend a cultural experience, food/restaurant and a day trip that absolutely cannot be missed. P.S. Could you also recommend a time of year? May seems like the best time for pleasant weather in Tokyo without being peak tourism season. We are all from Florida, USA and are allergic to cold.
Concerning the encephalitis vaccine. I lived in Japan for almost a year back in 2009, never heard of the vaccination and I was fine. Been back a few times since then, still fine :) I never heard of any cases from people I know there or people who visited Japan. Vaccination can definitely be a good thing but in this case personally I wouldn’t worry.
#faxmachine Dear Carnivorous Chris and Pescatarian Pete. I've been watching the channel for a while now, and I'm thinking of taking a trip to Japan when I'm better off financially. I'm thinking of taking my girlfriend of two years with me, but one potential issue that could come up while traveling is that she doesn't eat red meat. Not to mention she has an allergy for sesame, turkey, mustard, and cane sugar. The only things that worry me are her red meat free diet, and her sesame allergy. I know I could probably find options for her in the major cities, even with her various food allergies, but what about more rural places in Japan? How do they fare in terms of sesame free and red meat free dishes? Keep up the great work on the podcast P.S. Chris, I just finished the audiobook, and you did a great job. Congrats on the success of your book, Mr. Sunday Times best-selling author
YESSSSSSSSSSSS Destory the Ohio State football program! (Sorry, Penn State alumni here.) John Daub went to Ohio State. Only good thing to come from there.
Dear Perky Pete and Crazy Chris, I really enjoy the podcast and have a question for you. I was wondering why food videos are so popular in Japan? I've noticed that there's a lot of food videos that are being done by both Japanese and Foreign RUclipsrs. They order a lot of food and then eat it in front of the camera. I'm really curious about why these videos are so popular.
A big reason health care costs so much here (America) is because so many don't pay. Emergency services must respond and help, and emergency rooms will also serve you. Lots of people don't pay. No doubt there are multiple causes though, if you pay in cash it is a fraction of the cost for those with insurance. Very messed up. But you can and will get medical care even if you are indigent. Those with money will be the ones charged
An illegal worker in my town fell off a roof while working. He was drunk. The county or hospital flew his family up from Mexico for free and he received free treatment and they, god only knows what else they were given.
Hopefully the Japanese Police start making sure these people are held accountable for their shit actions in future. No country should have to deal with this sort of crap.
If he wanted to ride for free, he should be riding on top of the train instead of inside. Granted, the company and the country would be pissed either way if they had to clean up his body once he falls off and kills himself. I am surprised that he is not been arrested at the airport as he tries to leave the country.
I‘m really waiting for the day „RUclipsr“ will appear on the immigration form between „do you take drugs“ and „are you a member of a terrorist organisation“
On the discussion on encephalitis, in Australia, particularly after prolonged rain, there have been numerous people who have contracted the Japanese version of this disease, fortunately, unlike America, vaccination is cheap, this is not a disease to risk getting. As far as foreign idiots creating havoc, for once I gotta say ot is nice to see it is not Australians😳

#Faxmachine how is Japan handling their autistic population. never seen or heard anything about them. reason my interest is I am an Autistic male that holding lectures about living with Autism and life. Never heard anything from Japan.
That you shouldn't do this to Japanese people because they're small and weak, is uhm, how do say this with the proper nuance... I feel the compassion and I do understand where the thought came from but the remark itself did have me scratching my head a little.
Actually, I was watching a video of Shibuya on Saturday night during the Halloween cancellation and it occurred to me that, there are no litter bins on the street; on the over tourism thing, and to me, looking at Shibuya or more Kabukicho about maybe a few weeks ago, the litter issue in the tourism districts is, a problem. Got the audiobook a couple weeks ago..... great stuff.
Felt bad for Chris at the love hotel!
Plaid sports jacket over a black satin PJ top. That's an interesting fashion choice. The burgundy pocket kerchief is really guilding the lily.
Have to admit that I haven't used a JR Rail Pass since probably 2014. I travel by motorcycle instead (car when the weather is bad).

We had to make paper cranes in school when I was in the 2nd grade. In America. And yes, we read the book in class too.
Love your content Chris. My dad is planning on taking me to visit Japan within the next couple of years.
Suddenly I see an avalanche of Abroad In Japan. Much food for thought. Love the humour.
A year in a Japanese prison will do these delinquent youtubers some good
It probably genuinely will.
@2Cerealbox From what I've heard, Japanese prison is not a fun time. It's not as stabby as US jail, but it's like being in the army.
And if not, I'm sure Japan loves to send these folks to North Korea.
Or they'll come out even more unhinged ranting about how they "beat the Matrix" to impress their audience of 12 year olds.
No, I don't want my taxes paying for these assholes staying in Japan.
Today: Chris and Pete discuss about A Fraud in Japan
Dear curious Chris and peering Pete,

I second this, and if a bear not be found, a wild boar will do.
